i need help understanding the hulk

Realize that Bruce Banner's dad in the Hulk movie is bat-shiite insane from the get-go, and things get easier and much more fun.

Those rambling monologues are chilling, but also amusing when you realize how goldurn nuts he is.

He sends the dogs after Betty because he's trying to provoke the Hulk to come out, since the Hulk is the result of his experiments on Bruce as a young'un. And because he's FARGIN' NUTZEN!

Not sure if the comics are relevant.

In the comics, the Hulk is the embodiment of Bruce Banner's rage. The source of that rage is his unresolved anger towards his old man, who was a vicious, abusive $%@#.

In the movie, we have this, as well as the fact that Bruce's dad tampered with his DNA when he was growing up, apparently. When Bruce is irradiated, the DNA tampering manifests itself as the first appearance of the Hulk.

Now, Bruce's dad ain't wrapped too tight, as others have so rightly pointed out by now. Bruce's dad, when he finds out about what has happened, wigs out and is determined to get the Hulk back out where he can make further tests; he's apparently big into "improving the breed," and he thinks that his DNA diddling, plus some gamma radiation, may well be the thing to raise us up out of the primordial muck, yadda yadda yadda, right?

Particularly after his experiments in that direction result in the Hulk Dogs, which the Hulk dispatches in order to save Betty.

Bruce's dad doesn't care much one way or the other about Betty, but knows that threatening her is the way to manipulate Bruce.

Finally, after finishing his DNA dinking, he irradiates himself, and discovers that he has gained the ability to absorb the qualities of anything he touches -- a la the Absorbing Man. Precisely how and why this happened is unclear.

After this, the military captures Banner, and Bruce's Dad and Bruce get into this weird argument in a place that looks like the Actor's Studio, and Bruce's Dad angers Bruce enough to make him Hulk Out again. Precisely why he does this, I don't remember, and I don't think I understood it too well the first time; the plot was a little muddy, and there were these two &%$#@ women, one on either side of the theatre, who brought their toddlers to see the freakin' movie about the Giant Green Monster Man, and the kids were shrieking like someone had jammed their feet into a coffee can full of tarantulas, and it was VERY hard to enjoy the movie under such circumstances...

Well let me clarify. Why Bruce dad wanted to do that was so that he could get the hulk out and if possible,absorb the hulks 'powers'. However that proved too much for him, as we see at the end of the show, as his dad could not take all of the hulks 'powers'.
