In an effort to unofficially determine the best Heroclix team Gargantua and FlyingIcarus took 22 of Marvel and DC best's teams and had them face off. When the dust settled there were 11 winners added with the best performing loser for 12 teams total: Avengers, Batman Allies, Defenders, Fantastic Four, Injustice League, JSA, Legion, Masters of Evil, Sinister Syndicate, Titans, Ultimates and X-Men.

Volume 2 will reduce the group to 6.

Gargantua will take Defenders, Injustice League, JSA, Legion, Masters of Evil and Sinister Syndicate.

FlyingIcarus has Avengers, Batman Allies, the FF, Titans, Ultimates and X-Men.

"Yeah," Black Canary agreed. "The JLA met up with them recently. Oracle's got files on them all. Thor's the biggest threat. Supposedly he's the actual Norse god. Really strong, really tough, controls lightning."

"We have fought gods before," Dr. Fate reminded them.

"And won," Black Adam agreed.

"Right," Black Canary went on, ignoring the interruption. "This Sersi is one of a race called Eternals. I guess they're supposed to be immortal."

"I remember hearing about them in ancient times, so it may be true," Black Adam broke in again, "but immortal doesn't mean unbeatable."

"Yeah, you just remeber that, Adam," Canary resumed, beginning to sound annoyed.

"Quicksilver's a speedster. No ties to the speed force, so he's not as fast as the Flash, but still superhuman levels. Hawkeye's an archer of Green Arrow's caliber, uses lots of trick arrows too..."

"Hard to believe there's room for so many trick bowmen in the super-hero world," Hawkgirl commented.

"Do you guys MIND?! Do you want to go into this fight ignorant or what? Anyway, this last guy, Black Panther is king of Wakanda. He's a good fighter, and very smart, but that's pretty much his bag."

"How smart?" Dr. Fate asked.

"Maybe not Reed Richards smart," Canary said, "but certainly Batman smart."

"Then he is not to be underestimated," Fate stated.

"And we have to defeat them to send them back to their own world and...what was it again?" Hawkgirl asked.

"Restore dimensional integrity," Fate said. "While they're here, the dimensional rift cannot close and the longer it is open, the more risk of permanent damage .to the barriers that separate dimensions."

"Yeah, that was right on the tip of my tongue."

"Justice Society, oh really?" ponders Quicksilver, "Do you suppose they can join by a KMart blue light special purchase or must they go through the ordeal of a Costco membership first?"

"Good one, Quicksy," laughs Hawkeye who rarely agrees with the speedster, "Still the stats on this Black Adam are impressive. His speed sure outshines yours and he's got She-Hulk level strength to boot."

"Aye," Thor adds, "But She-Hulk level is not Thor level."

"Handsome and vaguely threatening," Sersi chimes in, "That is our Thor. This Dr. Fate bothers me. He's a magic user beyond Wanda's level and probably beyond Stephen Strange's."

"Definitely," says Black Panther, "And Hawkgirl is a reincarnated Egyptian warrior with centuries of experience. Black Canary is a martial artist on par with Black Widow. I'd say we have our work cut out for us."

"Justice Society hmmmpf," says the indignant Quicksilver, "What a stupifying name."

Black Adam humphed at Dr. Fate's caution, but obeyed. The Society moved out to the outer reception area, stopping just before they reached the double doors leading outside.

"Now what?" Hawkgirl asked.

"We have a couple of options," Fate said. "We should wait and see what they do."

"And how are we going to do that in hiding over here?" Black Canary asked.

With a gesture, Fate created a glowing sphere in the air. Within the sphere was an image of the Avengers. They too were preparing to move out.

"Oh."

"So help me archer if a big bad pops around the corner because you had to whine as loud as nine year old girl I'll be so angry," quips Pietro.

"Oooo," Hawkeye shakes his hands, "Wouldn't want that."

Black Panther pops between the two as if out of thin air. "Now boys," he says, "Be as alert as possible. We don't want to help the JSA by bickering amongst ourselves. We're the Avengers, we need to set an example to any other team."

"Right," Hawkgirl agreed.

"I'm tired of sittin' here cooling my heels. C'mon Panther let's do a quick reconnaissance," Hawkeye says.

Panther would argue that is more Quicksilver's job description but recognizes the archer's need to have something to do.

"Nothin'," Hawkeye says as they reach the spacious center of the complex.

"Not quite," says Panther. His animal senses heightened, "Dr. Fate and Hawkgirl are on the outer periphery of the bushes straight ahead."

Hawkeye readies his bow, "Where? I don't see..."

"Let me be the eyes," Panther answers, "Count of 3 be ready with a missile arrow."

Hawkeye nods.

"One, two, three.."

The wingspan of Hawkgirl's is difficult to hide so even without Panther's enhanced senses it's not a terrible challenge, with it it's incredible ease.

"Left side, near the rock formation, let it go."

And Hawkeye does.

The missile arrow, while not horribly damaging, does not release a target once it's found. It follows Hawkgirl through her deft movement and finally connects.

And Panther and Hawkeye hear is a loud, angry "Owwwwwwwww!". All they see are a few flying feathers.

"Good team, T'Challa."

"Indeed, Clint, indeed."

One problem - you've placed heavy object in R16. Wouldn't this stop Panther and Hawkeye from getting through the doorway, being hindering terrain and all?

Hmmmm....I could have Thor move first , pick up the ho and sit at R13. Then Black Panther and Hawkeye would have thier moves. Cool?

Peachy. Don't you hate it when your own object placement ends up working agianst you?

Tempting as it is to come after you all guns blazing, I'm going to be a little patient and give myself a turn to clear. No need yet to start taking push damage.

"Kendra wait!" Fate called after her. "We go as a team. Charging off half-cocked will just get us beaten."

"Fine," she fumed. Obviously it wasn't 'fine' at all, but she knew better than to argue with Fate.

"Now we move," Fate stated.

Hawkgirl didn't need to be told twice. Grabbing Canary, she was off before Fate had finished speaking.

"Thor's a little out of my league," Black Canary admitted, "but if you can get me close to that Panther guy, I should be able to take him."

"Right," Kendra said, landing her right in front of him.

"Hey," Canary taunted him, "What's with you dark silent types needing to have ears on your masks?"

T'challa didn't respond to the taunt, he simply took a combat stance.

Fate and Adam followed after Hawkgirl, Adam charging directly at Thor, bringing a desk down on top of him. At least that was the plan. Thor brought Mjolnir up and splintered it before it could do any harm.

Adam and Thor just stood for a moment, staring into each other's eyes, sizing each other up.

OK I had to think about the progression here:

Move #1: Panther rolls to break away. Kind of a necessary attempt here. Rolls 6. Panther moves to P9 (stealthed). Outwits Adam's impervious.

Move #2: Hawkeye will attack Dr. Fate. Needs 9. Rolls 10. Reroll is 6. Fate is ok.

Move #3: Thor will, no surprise here, attack Black Adam. Needs 5, rolls 10. Black Adam takes 5 clicks (3 from Thor plus 2 from ho).

Thor notes the arrogant eye of Black Adam. It fuels the fire inside.

"The God of Thunder offers thee a choice, base villian: surrender or utter defeat," says Thor, Mjolnir proudly pounding into his fist.

"How about I offer you this," Black Adam answers, "A number to a good stylist and speech pathologist. I mean come on, my lineage goes back to ancient Egypt but my vocal stylings are much more modern than yours, you antique."

"Oh aye, thou art baiting me," Thor says and slams Adam with Mjolnir from the right hand, "Good job!". He then follows up the hard hit with throwing an SUV right into his chest. Such an attack could not help but stagger Black Adam.

"Maybe I should sit down..." mumbles Black Adam.

Thor laughs loudly, "There be more awaiting thee, Black Adam, there be more."

Nice hit, and I loved the story post. The banter between Thor and Adam was great. I was really hoping Panther wouldn't make his breakaway.

Hawkgirl will move to P10, tying up the Panther end blocking his LoF to anyone else. Willpower to prevent push damage.

Black Canary will attack Hawkeye. AV8 against DV16. She'll need an 8. Gets a 6. Fate will invoke the forces of Order. Gets a 6 again (same roll, too!)

"Canary, I'll go after the Panther!" Hawkgirl said and swooped off after the Avenger.

"Right," Black Canary acknowledged. "Which means I get the Purple Arrow as my playmate." She attempted a karate kick against Hawkeye, but the archer was able to dodge the attack.

"Nice moves, babe," he said, "and nice legs. Love the fishnets. And no offense, but when you train with Captain America, you train with the best. Full points for trying though."

"Oh Pietro," Sersi says in a lyrical tone, "Time for a ride."

She sends Quicksilver over to where Hawkgirl is attacking Panther. He hits her with a pair of surprise punches that leave her reeling. However she grabs Pietro by the shoulder before he could do any more damage.

"Not so fast, fast guy," she says weakly.

"Oh no! Whatever will you do, Hawkgirl. Perhaps make me clean your cage?"

While held Pietro moves his arms at super speed until he gets enough vibration to try a new tactic. Taking his right hand he flicks the index finger from the thumb right into Hawkgirl's chin. The result is like being hit with a multitude of small punches. The JSAer falls.

Quicksilver stands up proud of himself with a superior look he nods to the Black Panther. Panther chuckles.

"You've feathers dangling from your hair," he says dryly.

[Gargantua]

Note to self - stop playing the Kendra LE. You always hash her way too quickly.

You're certainly making up for the poundings I gave you last couple of games. You're coming up with some good story posts to with them too. Let's see if I can finally put a dent in you.

BTW, your luck with Ultimates pulls still seems to be rubbing off. After going three for three last week, I got 3 more boosters tonight (from the same store yet) and got a U Magneto. That makes my record 4 for 8 for Ultimates so far.

Dr. Fate will attack Thor, using his Psychic Blast. AV9 against DV16, needs a 7. Squeaks in a hit with a 7. 3 to Thor, bypassing his Invulnerability.

Adam will attack Thor as well. AV8 on DV14. I need a 6. Gets an 11. Where were you last time I attacked Thor? Oh well, 1 more to Thor after subtracting his Toughness.

"You may be a god," Dr. Fate said to Thor, weaving a web of magic, "but even you are vulnerable to the might of the Lords of Order." Fate let loose the spell he was casting. The magical blast struck Thor and even his powerful Asgardian physique was no defense against the attack. Thor stood, momentarily staggered. Black Adam saw his opportunity and landed a blow on Thor's jaw.

"Varlet!" Thor cursed. "Art thou so without honor as to strike an opponent when he is weakest?"

"If that is what it takes," Adam conceded. "In the end, so long as justice is upheld, that is the important thing."

"Then I have little respect for thy 'justice' Black Adam," Thor replied.

Wow, you've had good luck with uniques too. So far I've gotten Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Mr. Sinister, Carnage and Scarlet Scarab. Too bad I don't care too much about the last three. Magneto is cool, hope to get Phoenix and Xorn.

Hawkeye looks directly at Dr. Fate.

"You don't look so tough, helmet face," he says.

"Try me, Avenger," says Dr. Fate.

"Don't mind if I do," he says and releases a barrage of arrows. Fate lifts two fingers and each arrow falls as a different colored flower.

As Thor lifts his hammer to hit Black Adam Fate creates a force field protecting his teammate. In that moment Hawkeye hits him with an electro-shock arrow. It connects and knocks the sorcerer back.

Canary will try to hit Hawkeye again. AV8 against DV16. Need an 8. She rolls a 9. 2 clicks to Hawkeye.

The Avengers greatest asset is their teamwork and in it they excel.

Sersi carries a weakened Thor away to give him a chance to catch his breath.

Then Black Panther and Quicksilver distract Dr. Fate as Hawkeye sends a few fireball arrows his way.

The end result in general confusion and a good hit on Fate.

Hey, I just realized a couple of things about Hawkeye's attacks. First he's based by Black Canary, so he shouldn't be able to attack anyone else.

Secondly, those attacks should have missed. Hawkeye's AV is 9, Fate's got ESD which makes his DV 19 against range. so he would have needed a 10 both times. I'm sorry I didn't catch this sooner. I'll give you the first hit, since I didn't catch it at the time, and you could redirect Hawkeye's last attack for 1 to Black Canary this turn, or give him a different action if you want. How's that for fair?

Wow, you're right. If you're ok with the damage Hawkeye did last time cool. I'd rather not push him to do one click of damage to Canary so I'd rather he do a pass. Rest of the move stays the same.

With Thor out of the way, Dr. Fate had a clear shot at Sersi.

"Ah, the Eternal," he said. "Let us see if your years equal experience."

Bands of blue energies went out from Fate's hands. Sersi narrowed her eyes, and beams of energy shot forth and dispersed Fate's magics.

"I'd call that a yes," Sersi smiled.

"You want a fair fight?" Adam asked. "Very well. It is you and I. Let us see who will prevail."

Thor swung Mjolnir at Black Adam. Adam's arm shot up to block the blow, and remarkably, did not shatter.

"You may be a god, but I have the power of six of the gods of Egypt coursing through my body. Now let us see how you fare against the strength of Amon!" He riposted with a right cross which landed firmly on Thor's jaw. Amazingly the thunder god's shoulders began to sag.

Argh! meant to move Thor out of Adam's way with Sersi's tk. What a lame misstep on my part. Well, not that big a thing really.

Quicksilver will push to attack Canary using flurry. Needs 6, rolls 7 (that's 2). Second roll needs 4, rolls 4. 4 clicks to Canary.

"Thor is weakened! We need a distraction to secure him," comlinks Panther.

"I have an idea," says Sersi. She sizes up Dr. Fate as the biggest threat and uses her transmutation powers to warp his face helmet. 'Let's see how handsome you are under that mask, sweetheart," she laughs.

Black Canary turns to a moaning Dr. Fate and gets clobbered by a dashing Quicksilver.

She gets up from his pummeling, "So do you Avengers enjoy hitting girls?"

Quicksilver turns his head, "Tsk tsk tsk. I know better, Ms. Black Canary, a feminist on the battle field and yet a sudden damsel in distress once the tables turn."

[Gargantua]

Things aren't looking great for me here. Let's see if I can at least take a few of you down with me. Canary on Hawkeye. AV5 on DV12. Needs a 7. Gets 5. Drat.

Pushing Adam to see if I can't finish Thor. AV8 on DV12. Need a 4. He gets a 12. Overkill at this point, but I'll take it. 3 damage to Thor and he's done. Adam takes a click.

Black Canary was shaken by Quicksilver's rapid-fire blows. She tried to focus enough to hit the archer again, but she just couldn't figure out which Hawkeye to hit. She knew there was only one of them a moment ago, but now there were two. She tried one and missed.

"Don't like the strength of Amon, Thor? How about some of the power of Aton?" Adam's fist connected with Thor's jaw again. Thor's eyes rolled back and the Asgardian fell. Black Adam turned to check on his allies. They hadn't been doing too well while he was finishing off the thunderer. Adam took a breath. Even with the stamina of Shu, he had to admit that finishing Thor had taken a lot out of him. But his teammates needed him. He braced himself and tried to decide which of these Avengers should feel his wrath next.

Hmmmm...Rookie Thor is a real hit and miss thing. Good stats at first but then he drops too fast. And he should never do less than 2 damage in my never-asked opinion.

I was feeling bad about Hawkeye's damage to Dr. Fate when Canary based him when I thought of something. He can do damage to two targets within his range (Fate and Canary both were). As long as he hits Fates stats couldn't he attack both and do all the damage to Fate? Moot point considering we've gone past it, just need your humble opinion.

Hawkeye raises his bow to attack Black Canary and Dr. Fate. Quicksilver decides to edge him on.

"Oh great. Another useless shot by the master bowman," he yawns.

"Listen, Quickie," he groans, "Now ain't the time for your nonsense. Then again whenever is?"

"Let's see who will you miss now: the limping stocking advertisement or the fellow with the hideous golden mask to hide a more hideous visage, no doubt. Tell you what, I'll take him out and you can wear the mask to hide your face in shame."

Hawkeye turns around to address Pietro and his arrow misfires.

"Dammit!" both the men yell.

Pietro groans, his attempt to spur on his partner embarrassingly backfired. Hawkeye gives him a disdained look far greater than any he could give the Justice Society.

Thing with Hawkeye is, to use the two arrows, he'd need to be making a ranged attack. As a grounded figure, based by another grounded figure, he doesn't have that option. He should only be able to make close combat attacks against the figure that's basing him. If Canary were a flier, then it would work, or if Hawkeye were a flier. But because neither of them fly, that takes away that option.

Normally Dr. fate's magics are more than a match for Sersi's transmutation powers. However he is so hurt by the arrow hit that he cannot form a coherent spell.

Sersi howls with laughter and the earth crawls up Fate's body and creates a layer around him that sucks out his last breath.

"Fate! No!" yells Black Canary who runs to his rescue.

Quicksilver creates a small tornado that swoops up Canary and smashes her into Dr. Fate in the rock shell. The shell breaks. Both Justice Society members lay unconscious after the dust settles.

"Well Sersi. We make a good team. However inadvertantly," Quicksilver states.

"Oh Pietro," Sersi ads, "That's what all the men say. And when they do, there's nothing inadvertant about it."

You may get your chance to start the Batman/Surfer game sooner than I thought.

Adam flies to T14, grabs the light object from S15.

Before Black Adam could catch his breath and come to his teammate's aid, they were down. He felt rage building within him. He struggled to control it, channel it. He had spent most of his years since his reincarnation as a villain, and now had a chance to redeem himself. But losing his temper would make yielding to the evil urges that wanted him back far too easy. With a burst of speed he flashed past the Avengers and grabbed a drinking fountain off of the wall. He turned to face his foes.

"You shall not defeat me easily, Avengers. I shall fight to the last," he declared.

Panther to T9 stealthed, outwits toughness.

Sersi attacks Adam. Needs 7, rolls 7. 3 clix to Adam and he's down.

"You Avengers are little worms to one such as I," taunts Black Adam as he closes in on Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Sersi.

"Big man walk tall and carries a big fist," Sersi says, "We all know what that means", as she lifts her pinky and flicks it to and fro.

"Woman, I never...!"

The Panther pounces behind him at that moment and delivers martial artistry skill upon the titan. Adam's effort is valiant but the Black Panther sticks like glue.

Hawkeye readies his bow.

Quicksilver's feet twitch , ready to move.

Sersi's eternal powers stand at the ready.

But the Panther needs no aid and he finishes Black Adam off with a final blow.

"Whew, we did it," he says without being winded, "Even with the loss of Thor. Good work Avengers!'

"Did you hear that, Hawkeye?" asks Pietro, "He EVEN meant you."

See told you that'd be fast.

If only Adam had gotten that first hit on Thor, this could have gone very differently. Having to take full damage from Thor hurt. And darned if that Black Panther isn't really, really annoying.

Okay, next game...

Never played City of Heroes myself. Thought about it, but realistically don't think I'd have the time to devote to it.

I was considering trading out Strange for Iceman & Patsy Walker LE, but I don't think I will.
