At least they won't be butchering Alan Scott.

"zany comedy version a la THE MASK"

As a Green Lantern fan, this is horrible. I mean I'm a huge JB fan but Green Lantern should not be a comedy! Oh man this gets me mad. This will make GL look really lame. If he wants to do a superhero movie, he should do...i dunno.....plastic man, anything other than GL.

Like I said, I didn't even know where to start...the horror, the horror.

But what you said is essentially what I couldn't get past teh bile in my throat.

Jack Black? A comedic genius. Green Lantern? A character with limitless potential (as long as they do: Alan Scott (not good for a solo movie), Jordan, or Rayner) and an icon worthy of a classic, respectful treatment.

Jack Black + GL (unless JB was Lobo--that I'd pay to watch) = PAIN.

Catwoman a classic by comparison? I spit up my coffee when I read that. Thanks for making my day.

If any studio but WB was handling the DC properties, then I'd have reason to hope this lead was false....but WB has a proven track record of releasing turkey, after bomb, after flop. They don't have a dedicated 'super hero' guy at the producer level, a la Avi Arad, and it hurts them everytime they try to make a film using one of these great properties.

The viewer appetite for superhero movies is high. As long as they are quality films. Spiderman and X-Men prove that. And with Superman and Batman (among others) in their pocket, just begging for good films to be made of them, the best they can do is Halle Berry as Catwoman and JB as GL?

A total, utter joke. But then again, this was the studio that put McG...merely the director of the single *WORST* film of 2003 in charge of Superman.

Of course, Superman keeps going through directors, and casting rumours...I'll be surprised if that film is made by 2010. And if they are just going to make a piece of garbage, I'd just as soon they wait forever.

Batman Begins seems to be on the right track. A very good director (although I still would have preferred Aranovsky, Nolan is one of my current favourites), a very strong cast, and the suggestion that the emphasis will be placed on Batman himself, not the bad guys he fights. I hope it to be the exception in WB's terrible record of making, or attempting to make, superhero films in the last 10 years.

Now, JB as Snapper Carr in a JLA film? I could live with that.

But a joke-GL is just wrong. "Oh, my great willpower will let me act more like an idiot. Great Guardians!"

That is the reason I don't like the movie already. I'm not a huge DC fan, but I like the Catwoman character and her history (convoluded as it is).

And I am NOT a Halle Berry fan!

That said, CW seams like it might be a decent action flick....maybe.....just maybe....

I just wish they had used a different name for it....

This can't be true...

It just can't...

I'm not that big of Lantern Fan, but even I cry for all you guys if this happens. I have no idea what WB could be thinking on this one. Wait... Yes I do.

The #### Green Lanterns showed up on Duck Dodgers. That's where it came from. It had to be.

There is no way this film will reach the light of day after the Catwoman film hits and splats. I don't care how good Halle Berry looks.

And these two are going to make Mystery Men look like classics.

The Kid and I are gonna go see Catwoman. Matinee showing, of course. Bargain price. We enjoy a good train wreck, now and then.

But... Jack Black as Green Lantern. Zany comedy, like "The Mask."

I didn't much like The Mask, frankly. The original comic was a meditation on violence. And that's ALL it was.

"What if you had a magic mask that made you act like an anarchic cartoon character, and gave you cartoon powers -- like the power to pull shotguns out of your pocket, and the power to survive explosions, fires, and gunshots, with nothing more than blackening and bloodless holes in your body?"

The thing that made The Mask great was its steady wobble between comedy and horror, frankly. That, and the idea that it could be possible to become addicted to the power one could wield if one could just go totally berserk once in a while, be totally unstoppable... at the price of not being totally in control of your actions.

Man, this was GREAT stuff! It was both thoughtful and loony! It worked on a variety of levels!

...and under Jim Carrey, it became an homage to Tex Avery cartoons. It wasn't a bad movie. It just wasn't much like its source material.

...and now, we have Green Lantern. With Jack Black.

*sigh* This is gonna hurt, guys.

In 1967 the Batman was delt a bad hand that took years to recover from. Aside from Tim Burton's Batman, the late 80's and early 90's led comic book movie adaptions to be four letter words. Catwoman is the newest insult to the genre. Now the powers that be have decided to give another painfull kick to our collective balls by ruining Green Lantern for the masses.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of JB, but not as an Icon like Hal, Alan, or Kyle. If Jack must be a comic book persona, Plastic man would be an interesting take. Does Warner Bros. enjoy pissing on the already existing fan bases of their property? What, do they like the challenge of have to apologize and re: earn oue loyalty? WTF!

I'd say this must be a joke, because I seriously want to believe it's a joke. Jack Black is cool, but I just don't see GL being "zany"...at all. Has to be something Ain't It Cool put up to stip the pot. :)

Four bad Batman movies, Shaq as Steel, WB's Birds of Prey, Smallville 90210, Clark and BLOis and now Jerk Black as GL.

Well, at least we have Batman Begins next summer...maybe they won't screw that up.

Someone mentioned Keannu Reeves being in Constantine earlier, and something hit me... doesn't Keannu bear an at least moderate resemblance to Kyle Rayner? Not at all saying that he should take the role, just found it odd.

Jack Black as GL? It's gotta be fake. At least the CONCEPT of Halle Berry as Catwoman was decent to fair if not the execution. They'd be seriously shooting themselves in the foot if they tried this.

ohcysp
07/16/2004, 12:45
From what I've seen of Constantine and Batman Begins, is the only reason I still read DC comics. I'm a confirmed DC fan and have been for years. But I just can't support a company that taked beloved charactors and says "You know I think we need to take a great property, with a huge devoted fan base. And then we'll rape the hell out of why they love this charactor right in front of everybody. What a ya think?"

It's to the point where we need to take action into our hands. Who's with me?

Aww jeez... don't WB realise that if you made Green Lantern as a space opera, with half of it set on earth too, you'd have potentially a great superhero meets star wars type movie on your hands? Oigh. Large space type battles, mixed in with Lantern vs. Sinestro, and even some of those wacky 'guy goofs around with new found power' scenes.

tb - don't make the WHOLE MOVIE a goof-off!

Now I can honestly say that I wouldn't have a problem with Jack Black as a zany Mask-like Green Lantern (G'nort anyone?) IF he wasn't the lead. If we had a serious GL and he was the G'nort/Guy-type character I'd be loving it.

And people think the fans had an uproar about the way Hal ended up...just imagine if Jack Black is Hal Jordan!!!

As bad as this is, it's not the worst thing they could do to the Green Lantern mythos. They could have the Guarians abandon the Corps, have them come back, have Hal go insane and kill everybody, then try to undo that in a halfhearted manner over a decade or so. That would REALLY stink. ;)

If we're not heard, we'll be felt. I promiss you all, that. I am dedicated to making our conserns known to these corporate people. Our Heros should not be made for the big screen by those who don't even know who they are or know their importance in the lives of the fans. GL was an insperation in my youth, an Icon in teen years and hero to me. I am a fan. I am why there are books about his adventures and I will stand for him to be respected. I've never felt so serious as I do right now. This is me standing for our right to see our heros respected. For some this is a joke, for others maybe it's going a bit to far, but for me this has become a quest. Green Lantern, the Flash, Catwoman, Steel and countless others have been at my side for years entertaining me, inspireing me, and are a part of me. To let some suit in an office who this thinks comics are for kids, decide how I will see him on screen, and how many will see him for the first time, doing fart jokes. My friends he is gravely mistaken. Our heros have fought long and hard, not just on paper, but in the real world, against real enemy that would burn their exploits never to be seen. Now they are fighting against a new enemy that would ruin the good reputaions of those we stand up for. So stand with me. Stand and be heard for all of us together our voice will be echo accross boardrooms allover hollywood, and they bow to the fans.

I am a big GL fan, but I really want to hear more about this before I dismiss it outright. If the GL concept is treated seriously, but the ring is given to a goofball and it's funny, that may actually make a decent premise. It all depends on tone.

On the other hand, I don't have my hopes up.

From what I've heard, Jack Black's going to be Kyle Rayner. Which fits, you know, because Rayner's always been the cut-up, wackiest Lantern in the Corps and all that...Oh, what the hell am I talking about. This is going to be awful. I hope they're serious about Kevin Smith as Green Arrow. I want to see Warner Bros. find enough Spandex to cover those two meat pods. Does the government maintain a strategic lycra reserve?

I bet they try and do something like Men in Black. The GL's are supposed to be like space cops. Maybe he is not the star, just a Corp member or a big part of Hal's (if it is him) flight testing program.

Heh... if you search for "Green Lantern" on imdb.com, it automatically directs you to an unknown actor named... "John Stewart". Not much on the net yet about this, so I'd still put this in the rumour column. Then again, considering the long and winding road to release, there's no point in worrying until shooting actually begins.

I loves me some Jack Black, but when I first heard this, I thought 'oh, good gravy, no!' But the more I think about it, the more I go 'you know, this could work. GLs are so varied and crazy, and really, do you want to see a movie about a guy who has a ring that lets him DO EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE HE CAN IMAGINE and playing that completely straight? Maybe it's just because I don't read Green Lantern comics, but really, how many people do you need that can do EVERYTHING? Superman's hard enough.

Jack Black as an intergalactic space-cop, though... sign me up. :)

oh my god, the idea can work, will be a big success, BUT IS A COMEDY MOVIE! is not a Super Hero Movie. Why Warner can do a movie like Spider-Man or X-Men with the characteres.

Superman was the best (in his time) now if you see the movies of course are soo in the past (dont look Superman 3 please), but was a hero movie, All the poeple know Cristopher Reeve is Superman, why we can't have a new golden age of DC movies like Marvel with Spider-Man and the X-mens.
