Hi all!
I'm looking for a strong 300 points open team that I can use in a big and very competive tournament.
Here's some teams I made up:
U Thor 186
V Johnny Alpha 64
LE Jane Foster 16
E Black Cat 32
=298
V Cyclops (Ult.) 69
E Hawkeye (Ult.) 60
U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic
=299
U Despero 144
E Hawkeye 60
R Saturn Girl 44
R Destiny 20
LE Elektra (Ninja) 19
V Paramedic 12
= 299

Its my experience that if you are going to use Thor (U) on a small team (~300pts) that u need to protect him with barrier. This stratagy won me the Pushkin LE over the weekend. And even with barrier x2, two of the matches were very close. Once hes off that running shot hes not so difficult to tie up. Hes a "pusher" and needs to be protected.

I know it's difficult to field Thor, but I hardly ever have the chance to play and I want to field him.
But you're right, a big tourney is not the place for that.
Another team I tought about was based on Incapacitate and built around V Green Arrow and V Nebula, but I don't know what to add.

E Hawkeye (Ult.) 60
U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic

I like it as well, but it lacks some punch.

I ran this Thor team and won pretty handily:
U Thor 186
E Braniac 5 52
V Robin 22
LE Elektra 19
R Con Artist 11
E Paramedic 10
300 points even
Push Braniac into Mastermind, carrying Con Artist. Use Legion team ability to copy Ultimates on offense (Outwit through stealth!) and Batman Ally TA on defense. If someone smacks Braniac, Mastermind it to the Con Artist and keep Outwitting as Thor plows through your opponents figs (ALWAYS use his 2 targets, there's almost never a reason not to). Robin and Elektra lay down cover fire and can tie up potential threats to Thor until he is ready to deal with them.

I agree with darius_dax1 to use the second team.
You have three range attackers.
Each have different functions in your team
-> anti-stealth RCE attacker
-> running shot/four damage/RCE attacker
-> ten range/mind control/TK attacker.
V Shi has Blades/Fangs and Stealth to protect R Brainiac 5.
Three decent attackers have a slight advantage over one mighty figure, Ultimates Thor.
It still depends on the lucky dice rolls though.

V Cyclops (Ult.) 69
E Hawkeye (Ult.) 60
U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic
=299
I like this best, too.
One thing I think about is taking out Shi for Magdalena. The free move might me better, because Brainiac would make better use of it.

I'd really appreciate some more opinions.
I also need an easy to play team for a friend who has next to no experience, but wants to do me tha favour and come along. Is a Despero-team fool-proof enough?

Team 2, no doubt. You've got ranged fighters that can hit hard and still have some teeth up close.
Switching out Shi for Magdalena is a judgement call. I'm a huge Magdalena fan, and I can see your point on the use of Braniac. Shi's TA is good, but would be pretty useless to brainy. The other bit that goes back and forth b/t Maggy and Shi is while Shi has a 1/3 chance to complete avoid damage, Maggy reduces it by one for 100% of the time.

Let him play the Thor team it's pretty much a rinse & repeat team. Who knows might get him hooked playing with all that raw power.
I like this also
V Cyclops (Ult.) 69
E Hawkeye (Ult.) 60
U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic

Okay, I'll go with team 2.
I'm not sure anymore if my friend will come along, because he has a soccer game on the same day. But I'd let him play a Thor team. The team I made would have to be changed, though, because I only have one Hawkeye.

Another option for Shi or Magdalena would be Kabuki.
I can't decide.

I'm partial to the team with Cyclops :cheeky:
But of course I'm biased.

E Hawkeye (Ult.) 60
U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic

Coming back to this, I thought about switching out V Shi for a version of Robin and some cheap B/C/F piece, though I don't know who yet.
Whatcha all think?

As my rules question about outwitting through stealth is answered, I think about V Robin and LE Elektra (Ninja) instead of V Shi.
That would even allow me to up the medic to Jane Foster.

Or, possibly you could go with R/E Robin/R Huntress and maybe R/E Ian Nottingham (Top Cow) - this would get you Stealth TA, and that Free Move TA for Brainiac 5, not to mention the cheap B/C/F...
EmperorNorton
08/12/2004, 17:35
Yeah, could work.
Only problem is, I don't have Nottingham. Of the US exclusives I only have V Shi.
But that's exactly the thing I wanted. Is there any other fig that could play the role?

R Hellcat would be an option, but I don't like her dial.
Another option would be E Magdalena / Alfred pog / medic upgrade.
Did I mention that first price is a full set of Clobberin' Time? So please help me!
If you have other teams to suggest, please do so.
"Cheese" is a perfectly valid option!

Or what about taking out V Shi for V Kabuki, downgrading the medic to E and adding Jarvis pog?
I'm going to bed now. When I check this tomorrow morning, I want to see suggestions!!!!!!!111one

If you put in Kabuki, you don't need the Jarvis pog. Kabuki's TA is stealth! (Not to mention, she just rocks!) ^_^

If you've got the Keiko LE, play her. 22 pts. for Kabuki TA and B/C/F. You can use the extra points to upgrade your medic...and add in R Destiny...cheap PC >.>

Well since it's for a good cause. ;)
With the V Shi idea, she's a great offencive fig, but I'd sugest that you consider E Psylock(w Alfred). Cyclops is a beast as is(....it still feels wronge saying that...... )but having him RS up to Psylock for an enhanced double EE is just awsome. It can put a dent in almost any team. Also with the X-men TA you could share clicks of health with Brainiac to give you the outwit or perplex you need.
Not that Shi is bad!!!! Can't argue with an 11 attack.
Just a thought..............

Yes, and Jarvis provides the free move TA.
I probably like this best. Shi is better than Kabuki in the range department, but the team has three ranged attackers, so I won't need it.
I have neither LE Keiko nor E Psylocke, so these are not an option for me.
Thanks for your help!

You might want to consider and cheap barrier piece such as Vet Avalanche. Your opponent will probably go after Cyclops or Hawkeye first because of their "glass jaw". They both can deal a lot of damage but their defenses are relatively low and a good roll on a lower point Charge/BCF piece can take them out in one round. Avalanche can at least protect one or them with Barrier while you setup with Moondragon.

I think is focused a little too much on 1 figure
V Cyclops (Ult.) 69

U Moondragon 71
V Shi 47
R Brainiac 5 40
V Paramedic
=299
You would need a heavy hitter
U Despero 144
E Hawkeye 60
R Saturn Girl 44
R Destiny 20
LE Elektra (Ninja) 19
V Paramedic 12
= 299
I think is the best all around team
