My Team's Better Than Your Team, Round 3 - Game 1

[Gargantua]

In an effort to unofficially determine the best Heroclix team Gargantua and FlyingIcarus took 22 of Marvel and DC best's teams and had them face off. When the dust settled there were 11 winners added with the best performing loser for 12 teams total. Round 2 winnowed the 12 down to 6. Some surprises in which teams made it this far (Legion! Injustice League!) and others that didn't (JLA, X-Men!)

The winners of the next 3 games proceed to the semi-finals, with a wildcard slot for the losing team that KOs the highest point total of the opposition before going down.

Four superheroes materialize out of nothingness.

Beast clumsily backs into Hellcat who yowls like a cat and reacts instictively with her claws. Beast reacts equally instinctively from the claw hit and backs into Iceman creating an ice slide that crumbles into pieces when Beast knocks into him.

"Strange", Silver Surfer moans, "I did not sign on to babysit children."

"Sheesh!" whispers Hellcat to Beast, "Mans' got no sense of humor at all. Course if I were stuck in a silly silver spacesuit all the time.."

Beast chorts, "Yeah and imagine when you really hafta go...do ya think they have alien 'Depends'?"

Iceman squints his nose, "Ewwww Beast, figures you'd think of that."

Dr. Strange projects an astral image, the man responisble for teleporting them there initially.

"Defenders, I am sorry that all I can do is offer my astral image and advise but we have some major threats to face."

"Whoo hoo," says Beast, "Here we go again..."

"The Defenders this time," Calypso said.

"No matter," Doctor Octopus decided. "We've defeated the X-Men and those so-called Mystics. These Defenders will fall too."

"Beast, Iceman and Hellcat we can handle easily, but Octavius, the Silver Surfer," the Vulture asked, concerned, "he's supposedly one of the most powerful beings in the universe."

"PR," Kraven said, checking his weapons, "I've got some things here that should bring down even him."

"And Mysterio always has a few tricks as well."

"The way you people insist on taking about yourself in the third person drives me crazy," the Hobgoblin complained.

"You were crazy already," Bullseye observed.

"HAH!" Hobgoblin's laugh was more of a bark. "You're right about that, Bullseye. Well what are we waiting for? Let's get them."

"Agreed!" Doctor Octopus said. "With all of us united, nothing can stop...The Sinister Syndicate!"

"See what I mean," the Hobgoblin mumbled to Bullseye.

"Charge!" yells Iceman and Hellcat jumps on his ice slide and yells "Yee Haw! Let's get those varmin and bring 'em to justice cowboy Iceman. Say, you shouldn't go hunting baddies without a sweater. You might catch a cold. Get it, you're Iceman. Catch a cold?".

Iceman rolls his eyes.

Silver Surfer snorts in embarrassment for himself.

Beast doesn't have Super Strength. No objects for you, Dr. McCoy.

Kraven moves to the cover of the HO in K9. From there, he Outwit's Beast's Perplex.

Mysterio moves to the cover of the bush in F17.

Kraven dashed ahead and took cover behind a motorcycle whose rider wisely abandoned it when he realized the chaos that was about to erupt.

Mysterio disappeared in a puff of smoke, and Bullseye hopped onto the back of Hobgoblin's glider.

"Come on," Bullseye exclaimed, "Let's see what this baby can do!"

"Easy!" Hobgoblin scolded him, "this thing's designed to carry one. You'll throw of the gyros with your extra weight. I for one don't want to crash into the pavement."

"Sissy. Live a little, why don't you?"

Not giving me much choice.

Surfer moves to P12 and attacks Bullseye. Needs 7. Rolls 12. Wow. Too early for my12. So 5 to Bullseye.

"Wow, 7 to 4 hardly seems fair," Beast observes.

On cue the Silver Surfer moves in and attacks the first Sinister Syndicate member he sees: Bullseye. The hit is far than the villain is used to, not quite taking him out completely.

"Hmmmm, I will endeavor to do better next time," Surfer says with irony.

[Gargantua]

AAAAH! I have got to start checking stats before I do my actions, and not just rely on memory. I thought Surfer started with a 12 move, so I positioned my figures in what should have been out of range. Stupid blunder on my part. That'll make this game even faster. THough the damage to Bllseye should only be 4 - the Surfer's 3 +1 for the crit. Surfer doesn't get 4 damage until later. That does knock Bullseye right back to where he started from though.

Leadership is a 1.

No point in playing a defensive game here. You outrange me, so I'm just going to have to swarm you.

Vulture watched Bullsesy get blown back by the Surfer's blast.

"I don't think I want to play this game anymore," he said.

"Quiet, you cringeing coward!" Octopus snapped, "And fly me into position."

Vulture did as he was ordered, Calypso followed and even Bullseye managed to stagger back to where the Hobgoblin hovered on his glider.

"Defenders to my side!" the Silver Surfer commands.

"Ummm...Iceman and I are already here," notes Hellcat flippantly, "Couldn't be any closer if we were on your silvery-cosmic thighs. And I'd do that but Ice-boy here just doesn't swing that way, fella."

Before Norrid Radd can let out a predictable groan the Beast is at his side.

"The Defenders are a team, my friends, and I am the greatest asset. I mean this only to emphasis we must use my strength well and your skills to support it. Agreed?"

"All well and good," Iceman says "But while we're talking they're gangin' up on us. Lemme do this first." Iceman creates a ice barrier giving the Defenders a modicum of protection while they strategize.

Darn Iceman and his annoying barriers.

Mysterio appeared briefly, to comment "A wall of ice. Impressive. I may have to use that in the future." And then with another puff of smoke he was gone.

"What do we do now, Octavius?" Calypso asked.

"Fools! We go around it. Now Move!"

Octopus led the way, striding along on his metal tentacles to Iceman. "You," he threatened. "When I'm through with you, you'll be able to rent yourself out to keep drinks cold!"

"Hey guy," Iceman called, "Doc Ock made a funny! Okay, it really wasn't very funny, but he tried!"

Vulture swooped over the ice wall, carrying Calypso, and on the other flank, Hobgoblin rocketed forward with Bullseye.

Well let's see Beast will perplex Hellcat's attack to 9.

Hellcat will attack Calypso with psychic blast. Needs 5, rolls 7. Reroll is 5. Cool, 2 to Calypso.

Surfer uses runnnig shot and carries Beast to Q20, Silver is Q19, attacks Doc Oc. Needs 5, rolls 6. 3 to Doc Oc.

Good turn for me. I'll await the destruction that surely awaits me...

"Yow!" says Hellcat, "Can you say 'surrounded'?"

"Blast!" Iceman adds, "I can't construct a new ice shield..not yet..."

Hellcat reacts instinctively and hits the surprised Calypso with a weak but worthy mind blast.

"Moondragon, you bald egomaniac, you're a good teacher!" Hellcat yells.

"Fool!" Calypso says breathless, "I am far from done."

Hellcat sticks out her tongue, "Oh yeah? Well nah nah nah nah nah nah ta you, too."

Silver Surfer grabs the Beast and they head to the right, "Hellcat started to loosen this barricade, let me contribute!". And so he does hitting Doctor Octopus hard with his cosmic powers.

"Curse you, Surfer," Octopus yells, "Sindicate, we must get an edge if we are to defeat these insidious Defenders!"

Calypso will attack Hellcat, AV7 against DV14, needs a 7. She gets 11. Hellcat's Super Senses roll is 6. That's a miss

Bullseye attacks Hellcat, too. Also AV7. HE gets an 11, too! This time her SS roll is a 2. One whole click to Hellcat.

Kraven moves to O12, still in stealth. He'll Outwit Iceman's RCE.

Kraven cursed as the battle shifted away from him. Spotting a "Men At Work" screen not far from the action, he sprinted over to it.

Calypso took out one of her straw dolls and eyed Hellcat. "Consider this payback, woman."

"Funny thing," Hellcat said, "A lot of the power of shamanistic magic derives from the faith the target has in the caster. Too bad for you, my willpower's strong enough to overcome your power of suggesti-OW!"

"Her magic may not work on you," Bullseye explained, drawing the next card from the top of the deck he was holding, "but she sure does make for a good distraction."

Hellcat touched her arm where a deep cut was bleeding heavily. On the ground a few feet away lay a blood-stained three of diamonds.

Beast runs up to a dazed Doctor Octopus and hits him with a rapid fire set of punches. "Set right up and see the world's first Octopus man fall to the charms of that handsome devil, the Beast. Ladies, step right up."

Meanwhile Vulture rapidly flaps his wings around Iceman serving to distract. "You trying to annoy me, bird brain?" Iceman asks and with his right hand lets out shards of ice that impale Vulture through his costume.

"Brute!!!" the man in the bird suit yells, "Flaunting your power and manly strength against your betters."

"Hey," Iceman said, "The bird guy called me manly."

"Imagine that..." says Hellcat quizically.

"First time for everything," Beast adds.

[Gargantua]

Vulture, being my cheapest figure has access to the TA. He will borrow Calypso's 7 AV (woohoo!) and attack Iceman, DV16. Needs a 9, which means that 6 that I rolled won't do it.

Hobgoblin is going to attack Hellcat. AV9 on DV13, he needs a 4. Gets a 7. Her super senses roll is a 5, dagnabit.

Mysterio moves to L16, still in Stealth.

With Octopus down, the Syndicate lost any sense of coordination it had. Each individual member simply did what they felt like, and general chaos ensued.

"Whipper-snapper!" The Vulture said, throwing a punch at Iceman. "When I was your age we respected our elders."

"Tell you what," Iceman replied, as the villain's blow landed harmlessly on his icy armor, "when you stop wearing a skin-tight bird costume with a fuzzy ruff around your neck, THEN I'll start treating you with some respect. Fair?"

The Hobgoblin threw a pumpkin at Hellcat. The Defender flipped over it, and it exploded mid-air.

"Nice try, ghoulish," she quipped, "but next time try to remember, it's hard to scare a girl with a halloween costume when she's married to the Son of Satan."

Surfer uses running shot carrying Beast to Q12, he's P12. Attacks Kraven needs 6, rolls 6. 3 to Kraven.

Beast will perplex Hellcat's damage to 3, she attacks Calypso. Needs 4, rolls 11. 3 to her and she's done.

"So..." Silver Surfer says as he bursts in on the villain, "Your name is appropriate, Kraven, coward. Hiding from your foes. Time to meet them face to face," he then blasts Kraven with his cosmic abilities.

"I detest enemies who hide in the shadows. Show courage and face your enemy".

"Remind me never to play hide and seek with you," Beast chimes in.

[Gargantua]

Actually, this is kind of like the Outwit situation in the other game. Surfer can't make a ranged attack against Kraven, because the first part of a ranged attack is drawing LoF. And Stealth means that any LoF is blocked. You can make a close combatt attak on him next turn, now that you've moved up, but anything that requires you to attack with range, like Running Shot, you can't do.

Ok well this wouldn't have been the move I'd have made but to keep it simple we'll leave it. THIS rule makes sense at least. You're up!

Bullseye attacks the Surfer, AV6 on DV18, needs that big 12. Gets a 7. Wasn't really expecting a miracle there.

Kraven attacks the Surfer, AV10 needs an 8, and Kraven takes a critical miss. Like you need the help this game!

"I hoped I would get a chance to face you," Kraven said to the Silver Surfer. "A herald of Galactus. Just about the biggest prey of all. I paid big money for this vibranium knife," he continued, pulling a foot-long blade from its scabbard, "but I'm suspecting it will go through even your silver shell."

Just as the hunter poised to strike, the sun emerged from behind a cloud. It reflected off the Surfer's body, and Kraven was momentarily blinded. Reflexively he took a step back, put his foot into the open manhole, stumbled and fell to the pavement, cursing loudly in Russian.

Looks like the Defenders have this one in the bag, but a good show from the Sindicate.

Thanks Ando. Sadly the Syndicate's crumbling for me this round after two brilliant performances in their previous games. I fully expected the Defenders to win, don't get me wrong, but it's looking increasingly like I may not even score a single KO on them the way this game's going.

"Take this you blue-furred buffoon!" the Hobgoblin cackled, throwing a pumpkin bomb at the Beast. It struck the Defender and exploded.

"Yowtch!" McCoy yelped, patting out small fires in his fur, "watch it Gobby. Who writes your dialogue anyway? You really need some fresh stuff. I mean, really, 'blue-furred buffoon' had already been done to death years ago."

I expected to win here and got some good rolls besides. Anyway onward we go:

Hellcat attacks Vulture. Needs 3, rolls 8. He's done.

Surfer attacks Kraven. Needs 2, rolls 8 (again...I thought 8 was your lucky #). Kraven is gone.

The Vulture continues his incessant wing flapping to annoy the Defenders.

Hellcat looks at him, "You are an annoying son of a gun, aren'tcha?" she says. She then pounces on him and uses her claws tearing his feathers up leaving only a wingless costume. "Maybe not so annoying now, huh, baldy?"

Meanwhile the Surfer finishes off Kraven. "Excellent Defenders, we are well on our way to victory."

"Nice kitty," Bullseye whispered, drawing the next card from his deck. With a lethal flick, the card sailed across the street.

Hellcat noticed the movement out of the corner of her eye, yowled and jumped back. The card still sliced across her mid-section, but did far less damage than it could have if not for her quick reflexes.

Let's get Bullseye out of the way, shall we? Even so weakened he's a bit of a beast.

Beast charges to M9 to attack Bullseye. Needs 4, rolls 4. 2 to Bullseye and he's done.

Bullseye laughs proudly at the way he hurt Hellcat. There is pleasure in hurting these dumb ### do-gooders. Heck, he acknowledges, there's pleasure in hurting...period.

He is keenly aware of Beast's coming for him and equally aware that he is probably too weak to handle it. He grabs a pair of numb chucks, ready in his hand.

The Beast's agility easily avoids the best Bullseye can offer and delivers his own Bullseye to the villain, completely taking him down.

Mysterio will try to break away from Iceman. He rolls a 6. Phew. That's one lucky roll for me anyway. He moves back to I17. From there he'll Outwit Beast's Toughness.

Hobgoblin attacks Beast. AV9 against DV16, needs a 7. Rolls a 9. 2 more click to Beast. Now I'm starting to roll well, probably too little too late.

Beast stood over Bullseye's inert form. Suddenly something exploded right in front of him. Hobgoblin cackled maniacally.

"Okay, I've had just about enough unbridled sadism for one day," the Beast complained. "You guys have definitely got to be reined in and locked away someplace."

Iceman made to encase Mysterio in an ice-trap, but there was a puff of smoke and when it cleared, all that remained was a slab of ice. The villain had disappeared.

"I hate it when he does that," Iceman grumbled.

Not that it actually matters but after Hobgoblin's attack on Beast there is only 1 click to him.

OK no surprise here, Surfer will attack Hobgoblin. Needs 5, rolls 6. 3 to Hobgoblin.

"That Mysterio guy vanished faster than a Krispy Kreme at a Jenny Craig meeting but I think he went thatta way," she points.

Iceman constructs an ice sled and carries them off in this direction. Hellcat begins a jaunty refrain of "We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz, we here he is a wiz of a Wiz, if ever a Wiz there was...."

Cool. My #1 is the Legion. I didn't want a rerun of the X-Men vs. Ultimate X-Men. FYI--I will be suing the same Legion as before Supergirl, Brainiac 5, Saturn Girl and Live Wire. That's a no brainer.

Mysterio flipped a small ball at Iceman. It exploded with a brilliant flash and a lot of smoke.

"That one's more for effect than damage," Mysterio admitted, "but for an Iceman, the heat generated by the flash powder should do a fair amount of damage, I expect."

Why can't Iceman make a ranged attack on Mysterio? Iceman is a 'flier' I thought they could. My move depends on that answer so I'll await your reply.

He could - if Mysterio weren't stealthed. Because the first clause of making a ranged attack is that he must be able to draw a line of fire. He can make a close-combat attack, but as soon as he tries to make a ranged attack Mysterio's stealth blocks his LoF.

Well I don't understand it, I mean if any character is next to a stealthed character they can see them so their powers should not be effected. Oh well I know you didn't make the rules...

I know, it's really counter-intuitive. But in a game as complex as this, the wording of the rules is overall. Why you can see me to make a close combat attack, but I suddenly become invisible if you want to make a ranged attack or Outwit me or something doesn't make sense, but the rules say it's so. Go figure.

Anyway, I can't afford to push, so I'll just pass and take my lumps. Don't even have anything worth outwitting.
