anyone else having playstation2 problems? It all started after my 42nd game in ncaa football 2005. the thing started to make weird noises. Then i pgot madden 2005 and the same thing happened. After a minute of letting the noises go on, the games start to freeze and you have to hit it to make it run again. Then today i was watching aqua teen hunger force dvd and it made the same noise after a episode. I'm very angry and frustrated.Does anyone have any similar problems? Help me out!

Similar problems: It started a few months ago. First it was stalling when I would try to load Madden 2003. Then at times when I got it to load, sometimes the narration would be behind, (it would say, "Touchdown" as I was kicking my extra point.) My other games would load OK, it was just my Madden game. But I played Madden all the time. Over the months it kept on getting worse and worse as I would force it to try to make my Madden game work. I even tried to get the new ESPN 2005 and it froze when I tried to save some new settings. Sadly, my PS2 now no longer reads disk. I tried a cleaner disk, but it didn't do anygood. It still turns on and gives its entro, it just doesn't recognize the disk. And ALL the other PS2's are sold out.

A friend of my Brother said that most PS2 problems can be solved by opening it up, and clicking some white disk 2 clicks to the left.

Of course, I wouldn't want to try that without someone skilled at that sort of thing there.

I have the same noise problem. It jusyt started and has yet to affect my game playing. My gues is the fan is bad as there cannot be too many other problems that would let you play the game. Does anyone know if sony makes replacement parts? Or does it boil down to buying a new one if it tanks?

well, i think that i am going to try and see what my moms co-workers think. she works with a bunch of people that are well, nerds. so they pretty much know anything tech. Then i'll see if any computer repair places in town can fix it. ####py thing is, I threw away my warranty thinking i wouldn't need it!

Always keep the warranty on a PS2. We've gone through 3 now, and everytime we just bring it it and Future Shop replaces the whole thing, no questions. When you do get it replaced, buy another extended warranty if the store offers it. Cheaper than repair costs, or worse, a new system.

This happened to me a few months ago...I did a search for PS2 troubleshooting on google or whatever and I found that you have to take the cover off, and either clean the lens on it with some rubbing alcohol or clicking the white disc (as JKLantern refered to), it looks like a gear. Any way, I did it and it worked like new afterwards. Let me see if I can find that PS2 troubleshooting site again...

A couple of tips for PS2 people from a guy who has sold over a 1000 of them.

1. Never push the tray closed. Always hit the eject button to close the tray. If you push them shut it will eventually wear down and bust the gears.

2. Keep it cool and clean. Don't put it in an entertainment center where it is closed in. PS2s will get hot fast and burn up before you know it if not kept in a well ventilated spot. Use caned air to blow the dust out of the fan and inspect every CD that goes in it for being clean
3. NEVER use your PS2 to play DVDs or CDs. It is hard on the machines by making them run hotter. If you need a DVD of CD player both will cost you less than $70 a much better investment then buying a new PS2. That's all I got hope it helps.

I think PS2's are porrly built and unreliable machines -

i know about half a dozen people that complained about their PS2's.

my Gamecubes never gone wrong

yeah, i got a game cube too. Oh well, maybe i should have gotten the games for gc. cept, i hate the joystick thingy. I seriosly hope you guys are right about the clicking thingy. Um if it backfires and i do something wrong like click it the wrong way, what happens? Can you even open the thing up. I didn't see any screws anywhere.

you know something, the south park episode where people said "old people need their driver's license's taken away" is right. just drove on the highway with my grandma, and she needs it taken away. but that's a whole other story.

Sigh speaking as a professional video game reviewer. Do not open your PS2 up.

There was a defect with first gen PS2 systems. Call the company and they'll fix it. They usually waive the fee too. They did it for me. Heck call the company anyway. They can usually be talked into fixing it for free. Do NOT void your warrenty no matter what any other moron tells you. It's not worth it.

you do know this is playstation2 and not 1? the site you gave me is 1. Does it work anyway?

Sorry, I didn't realize that was for the PS1, let me put the good one up. But opening it up is no problem at all really. You pop off little covers on the bottom to get to the screws, they pop off pretty easily. Plus you'll need one of those tiny screwdrivers like you'd use on eyeglass screws.

the screws are under the little little squares, pry them off with a knife.
two of the screws are longer than the others, so either mark the holes, or just remember which holes you took them out of.

i had one of the old first edition ps2s, the dre's got so bad i had to clean mine like once a week. then it stopped playing dvds, thenblue disc games, then all games.
just bought a new one for my birthday.
been playing mvc2 happily ever since :)

Fine, don't listen to me. It's not like I'm paid to dispense this sort of advice, oh wait... I AM!!! But I'm sure you know what you're doing by opening it up and nudging around a "white thing"... oh wait, YOU DON'T!!!

Also the Gamecube has gone wrong on me too. I sent it away to be fixed (nintendo did it for free, they were awesome.) It's something that happens with Game systems. Trust me, do NOT open your system it WILL backfire and you will HAVE to buy a new system. The company will not fix it because opening the machine voids the warrenty.

To Matt, it's to big of a pain to even think about playing a DVD in the PS2. I don't see why people can't go to Wal-Mart and spend 42 dollars on a DVD player. You know?

goldluster
08/17/2004, 18:11
yes, i know. I haven't done anything. If you'll look at the time i posted... it was the exact same minute, and i sent maybe 1 second after you did. So no worries. Now, umm i was kinda stupid in jr. high and i threw away pretty much everything. I think i may have thrown away the warranty papers too. (i'm sure that'll get a lot of laughs) So, do you have to have the warranty to send it in? I haven't opened the void warranty sticker. Am i screwed if this happens or can i get it fixed at best buy or something, if i don't have the warranty papers and playstation requires them. Thanks

Also Sony, the sompany that makes the system advocates taking a household vacuum cleaner hose and sucking the air out. Blowing the air with canned air makes all the dust just move around and resettle on different parts of your system. It lets out very little dust. Sony advocates that you #### the air out, as does Nintendo and X-box. I know everyone else who has given advice is going against me. But I am pretty sure I'm the only one who is right. I definately am the only one who isn't going to result in buying a new system and what harm can a phone call to Sony's toll free line do? Just do it!

I probably should of mentioned you stick the hose up to the ventilation fan. This is also good for the fan because it keeps the fan moving the correct way.

Mine is having a similar problem... it won't play blue disc games. It definitely doesn't have the warranty because I bought it off ebay a couple of years ago, so do I have any alternatives to get it fixed (and/or fix it myself?)

freakazoid_x
08/17/2004, 18:38
Yeah catt, as long as it's a first gen system Sony won't regard the warrenty. Just call their 800 number and tell them you have a first gen system and they'll take care of you. They might try to charge you a fee to fix it but if you put up enough of a stink they'll waive it. But usually they just waive it.

Yeah - don't void your warranty. They put that little sticker on there so people don't do something like, oh, say, swap out the guts of a new machine and put 'em into your old case and return to Best Buy the new case containing the board your girlfriend fried by knocking a can of soda into it. Speaking hypothetically, of course. Seriously, don't go mucking around in there if you don't know what you're doing. If you're not comfortable building a computer from scratch, you shouldn't be trying to do maintenance on a closed box gaming system.

Quickest and dirtiest solution I've seen to tracking problems with Sony systems is to simply turn the thing upside down once you've inserted the game disc. Gives the motorized tracking arm a little assist in its duties.

I respect Hail_eris, even though I seldom speak to him I do have a respect for him. However what he has just said has got to be the most crazy thing I have ever heard. It's like video game system repair at an insane asylum. Don't do any of this stuff yourself. I repeat, CALL THE 800 NUMBER ON SONY'S WEB SITE!!!

I opened my PS2 up and fixed easily, and it's been working perfectly ever since. And that was about a year ago.

Well, I did qualify it by saying not to do it and posing it as a hypothetical. Flipping the system over does actually work for a while, though. It was the low-tech solution of choice for aging PS1 systems and, as far as I know, for PS2 systems that are getting up there in the years. If you've got a machine that's still under warranty, though, that should be your obvious first choice.

I just got a very nice private message from Catt, thanking me for my help. Apparently he called Sony and they're going to fix his PS2 free of charge. Thank you Catt, your PM made my day. I am glad to help anyone out with any of the knowledge I have. Although I'm not an encyclopedia... as a matter of fact my brain is the "Go dog Go" equivalent of video game maintenence. Still I am glad to assist.

Also to Hail, I was just poking fun at you a bit. I know that was THE way to fix the old PS1's but the old PS1's were so full of flaws. PS2 is much better (not as good as Cube, but still a lot better than Box.) However, sorry if I stepped on your tails a bit.

Also if you take proper care of your PS2 you'll be able to do all the stuff with it that people tell you not to do. Like play DVD's. I play DVD's on mine just to show off that I can. Also switching it over is a bit of a pain. I have to turn the knob on the router over to the DVD hookup and try to not confuse it with the hook-ups for cube or box.

Point being, take care of your systems and they'll take care of you. I've had to call in on both my PS2 and Cube and they were both fixed for free. Nintendo covered the shipping costs even.

Nintendo customer service, excellent
SOny Customer Service, excellent
X-box custimer service ???, haven't had any problems, yet. It's still brand new.
