Movies I saw that were good:

Napoleon Dynamite
Spiderman 2
The Bourne Supremacy
Hero
Troy
Kill Bill
The Terminal

I cant really think of others. Im sure someone will post them though...

I didnt think that Collateral was all that good. I just watched it today and was like "whatever." That happened a lot in that movie, and I just wasnt pleased.

Whereas, You have the genius script of Napoleon Dynamite.

One Scene, We see Napoleon test a Time Travelling machine.

I cried from laughing.

Saw...

Saw has to be on the list... it's one of the few movies that has left me the way it did after the movie was over...

I was really looking forward to Napoleon Dynamite and it was a BIG letdown. They had some great characters but the director never did anything with them.

My top 10:

Incredibles
Ocean's 12
Troy
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Finding Neverland
13 Going on 30
House of Flying Daggers
Fahrenheit 9/11
Shaolin Soccer
Shrek 2

Gacy's Clown

Looks like Mago beat me to it....

SAW has to be on the list or you may as well just toss the credibility of this list out the window.

Man, I can't believe Kill Bill has only been out less than a year. That movie rocked and definitely deserves to be on the list too.

The Incredibles, while a good movie, wasn't anything breakthrough or amazing. I mean, all of them were just a family version of many of our favorite comic characters already.

I'd even put Super Size Me on there as well, just for the amount of useful information that can be obtained from it...and all at the director's expense.

7. Bubba Ho-Tep
8. Eternal sleep of the Spotless mind
9. Spongebob Square Pants, The movie :p
10. Taking Lives

These are ones that I could think of off the top of my head.

I saw Meet the Fockers today, and it will go down as one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen.

I didn't really see many movies this year. Most were lame-looking, and I didn't have the funds to see them. So bear in mind that I didn't see much.
Of what I saw:
1. Spiderman 2
2. Passion
3. Punisher
4. Van Helsing
5. Bourne Supremacy

I didn't get to see (but want to see):
Shrek 2
Incredibles
AvP

Hey, I love any franchise with Danny Glover as much as the rest of you, but Alien v. Predator was a pile of dung (and I have plenty of HCRealms back-up here, as I saw it with Gacy, Retardog, Dolemite199, Billy Batson, SonofVader, and DS). That's like me listing Chronicles of Riddick as one of the best movies of the year. Yeah, I liked it, but let's face it, it was no cinematic masterpiece...

This movie has been out for a couple years now, IIRC.

It's the one where a comics collector dies and rumor is spread that he had a vast and expensive collection, right? And the owners of two different comic stores try and con the mother out of it and then try to steal it and things go to heck?

IF this is the one I am thinking of it is really worth renting and buying when it goes on sale. I don't know if I would pay full price for this on DVD. But it was really good.

Sadly, I have only seen a few movies this year:

AvP
Spider-Man 2
The Grudge

I think that is it.

I would only qualify Spidey 2 on the Top 10 Great Movies for 2004.

I have seen the Kill Bill duology and own them on DVD, though. They both qualify to make the List.

Spider-Man 2
Kill Bill 2
Anchorman
Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind
Bubba Ho-tep
The Incredibles
Hellboy
Farenheit 9/11
Spongebob Squarepants
Napoleon Dynamite

To those of you putting down Kill Bill 1, the first volume came out last year. The second volume came out this spring.

Super Size was a pointless move. Let me get this straight, if I drink 2 quarts of Coke a day I'll get addicted to caffeine??

And if I eat super-sized portions of food I'll feel like carp?

Super Size Me could have been about any restaurant out there (almost). I was actually disappointed at how simplistic and obvious it turned out to be.

No particular order

Kill Bill Volume 2 (BRILLIANT! Better than the first!)
Hero (Wow. Just...wow. All praise Zhang Yimou)
Saw (Second scariest film I've seen)
Team America: World Police (AMERICA...F### YEAH! And the speech at the end had me in tears!)
Hellboy (Second best comic adaptation, behind Burton's Batman)
Napoleon Dynamite (What the hell...I'm still scratching my head!)
Spiderman 2 (OH yeah...nothing original, just great fun)
The Incredibles (Pixar raise the bar. Again.)
Shaun Of The Dead (SEE IT!)
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (Pure, unadulterated genius.)

And some of the worst:

Passion of the Christ (It was a frickin' Snuff movie!)
AVP (Did neither franchise justice)
Meet The Fockers (a real let-down!)
The Village (Good, but that ending was just STUPID!)
The Girl Next Door (nice sexploitation! Cretins.)

I'm not sure if you know, but "Snuff" movies are real, live execution-style videos; no actors, no special effects, no scripts. Snuff movies are illegal, underground video captures of murders, executions, etc.

The Passion was the re-telling of a story, that, yes, was violent and had graphic imagery, but really, was it any different to the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan? Or any scene in Black Hawk Down? Fundamentally, there was no real difference.

Maniac_nmt
12/28/2004, 00:19
no one enjoyed Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow? It did exactly what it was supposed to, and was a great tribute to the old serials. Right down to the Flash Gordon Ray Gun.

Passion of the Christ was, well, I wouldn't rate it. It was an excellent film, and extremely well done. The story it told though is above something as petty as say the Oscars, or a ranking system.

Sky Captain was an hour and a half setup for one joke. It was a funny joke, but not a good movie.

10: Incredibles

Good twist on superheroes. Can you say Heroclix exploitation?

9: Shrek 2

Good fairy tale comedy sequel that while involving cliches seems to still entertain.

8: Kill Bill vol 2

Very good action movie, Would have been 3rd best if Cowboy Bebop came out this year instead of last.

7: Meet the Fockers

Hilarious sequel, too bad that Ben Stiller just stars in way too many movies.

6: The Village

MKS is trying so hard to be Alfred Hitchcock. His stories teach a moral and have a twist. Over time we have predicted this twist. The village-while somewhat disappointing, still has a strong moral that it teaches.

5: Saw

Psycho movie with a twist in a sense. Pretty good.

4: Dawn of the Dead

Pales in comparison to Night of the Living Dead, but Kenyan Zombies running amok with lots of gore, violence, nudity, and lesbians scream greatness.

3: Napoleon Dynamite

Good comedy with the underdog nerd actually being the nerd rather than the victim who wins in the end.

2: Spider-man 2

'Nuff Said

1: Spider-man 2

Movies that sucked/weren't good enough for 2004:

Hellboy-I don't understand it, the one liners were okay, but not funny enough, the action sequences were good, but the movie just seemed extremely rushed.

Passion of the Christ-If you considered Jesus to really exist, then this movie can easily be considered a snuff film. Yeah, the cinemetography was good, the acting was good, but all it did was just reinstigate religous propaganda and put Mel Gibson in the lime light again. After the Mad Max series, there's nothing left Mel!

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow-Entertaining flick, but suffers from Attack of the Clones syndrome.

Blade 3: Trinity-Dracula is the only saving grace in it-that and a superfluous amount of one-liners.

Aliens vs. Predator-I'm a big fan of these two icons, the movie is way too fast paced however, and the make up is all wrong for the predators. Now if they took the movie and made it 2 hours like a normal Alien/Predator movie and then actually did some exploration of character, it would have been better.

And I'm done, let the flaming commence.

I'd be willing to submit my top ten list... but seeing as the year isn't over yet (and I put the cap for seeing 2004 movies on Oscar DAY, to give me time to catch up), I haven't completed it yet. And we're in the middle of the best part of the year for film, so I think there will be quite a bit of shake up in the top ten. BUT I will list my top 5, as I am fairly certain they will be in the top 10 at the end of the year.

5. Finding Neverland
4. Napoleon Dynamite
3. Closer
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
1. Garden State

And no... I'm not a girl.

WakandaMan

Gotta agree with you Maniac, The Passion is far above any rating system. It's an experience not a movie.

Oh and Prof, since Jim Caviezel is not in fact Jesus Christ, you are unequivocably wrong about it. And also, what about Braveheart? The Lethal Weapon series? Mel is, and always will be, an absolute legend in my book?

Here's my stab at a list:

1. Spider-man 2
2. Troy
3. The Incredibles
4. The Village
5. I, robot
6. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy
7. Shrek II
8. Hellboy
9. Punisher
10. Without a Paddle

Wow, I just kind of realized how many movies that I missed this year. I don't think I even saw ten. I still haven't seen Spider-man 2 yet (though a friend loaned it to me, it's still just sitting there), maybe I'll get to it this weekend.

So, here are mine from the ones I saw,

1. Garden State (freaking unbelievable, go see it!!!!)

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (what can I say that hasn't already been said)

3. Farenheit 9/11 (love him or hate him, Moore made a movie that had everybody talking, and it's nice to see some documentaries get some attention this year)

4. The Incredibles (great superhero story with great messages in it)

5. Bubba-Hotep (what's not love about Bruce Campbell as Elvis?)

6. Shaun of the Dead (great fun)

7. Saved (I went to a Christian university, and man, did I know a lot of these people, it was hilarious without being offensive)

8. Harold and Kumar (for a stoner movie I was so surprised by how smart this movie was. If you have a sense of humor, see it)

9. Mean Girls (surprisingly funny and poignant, though a little too tweeny)

Movies I still haven't seen but plan on seeing:

Spider-man 2
Team America
Saw
Napoleon Dynamite
and probablly a lot more.

This was a strange year for films...my favorite action films was probably Kill Bill 2...Spiderman 2 was also very good but we saw a bit of a spike in quality indy films too. All five films Khatt indicates were excellent. Kinsey was another favorite of mine. I'm expecting alot from The Aviator and the one about Rwanda as well but I haven't seen them yet. Anyway, I say it's a strange year because in perspective this year contained two extremely significant films...The Passion of the Christ and Farenheit 9/11...both are controversial and wildly popular the demographic they preach too. I think in the long run these films will be remembered the most. I can't quite form a top ten yet but so far my number one is Closer.

That's because you were expecting something other then the movie. It billed itself as a tribute to the old serials and radio dramas, and that's exactly what it was.

The fuzzy lighting to simulate old film, corny dialouge, and a mad scientist.

Then again I enjoy alot of those (even had a few of the old Lone Ranger radio serials on tape as a kid).

Kill Bill Volume 2--> Tarantino made a huge jump forward with this film considering his last (excluding Kill Bill V. 1) wasn't that great (Jackie Brown).

Bubba Ho-Tep--> Everyone loves Bruce, but what about Ossie Davis?!?!?! He was frickin' brilliant. I almost like him more than I do Bruce. Considering he's in his 80's, Davis gave a very heartfelt performance as the ex-president.

Shaun of the Dead--> Excellent Brit comedy. The tagline sold me. "A Romantic Comedy. With Zombies."

Farenhiet 9/11--> I understand Moore is biased, but so is the news media. If you don't like the subject material, you still have to appreciate the man for his craftsmanship. He's an amazing filmmaker. Bush sucks.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind--> Winslet and Carrey were phenomenal and Kaufman pumped out another brilliant script.

Hellboy--> Without knowing anything about Hellboy, the film prompted me to do my homework and get to know the loveable demon. Ron Perlman was the only one who could have pulled that off. Hellboy kicks ###!

Spiderman 2--> Raimi's done it again, but I wasn't entirely pleased with the Doc Ock backgroud story. I prefer him evil to the core, but that's just nit-picking. The film was great!

I am eagerly waiting to watch Closer, The Aquatic Life, Sideways, and the Avaitor. I'm sure these would all make my favorites of this year too.

I'm pretty sure Big Fish, Return of the King, Kill Bill vol. 1 and Bubba Ho-Tep are considered 2003. I'm not positive though...Big Fish was a really great movie.

My least favorite films are in here as some people's favorites...Chronicles of Riddick and Saw were horrible...as was of course Catwoman. This of course just my own opinion.

Like Inbetweener's list quite a bit, but I've got to add a few:

* The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - even if you hate the movie, go see it for the soundtrack. Bowie in Portuguese is something not to be missed.

* any of the documentaries that Robert Greenwald is churning out. If Michael Moore is preaching to the converted, Greenwald is doing it better, on a smaller budget, and with closer adherence to the rules of actual journalism.

* Sideways - look! A literate buddy movie! I can't even think of a precedent for that.

* Motorcycle Diaries - another buddy pic, but this one has the added twist of being a biopic of Che Guevara.

* Metallica: Some Kind of Monster - judge not, this is some of the best documentary film-making in recent years. Director Joe Berlinger is the guy who did "Paradise Lost" a couple years ago and his technique has only improved over time.

* A Very Long Engagement - pay very close attention - this is *the* date movie of the year. You'll look cool and brainy for having picked a foreign film, the story is, well, engaging, and you get to stare at Audrey Tautou for two hours. If you liked "Amelie", this is the same director - but this has war in it, too. Win-win for everyone.

Honorable mentions:

* Spartan - as usual, Mamet's dialogue sparkles.

* Before Sunset - runner-up for best date movie.

* A Dirty Shame - it's a new John Waters movie, so it makes my list by default.

* Mayor of Sunset Strip - there were two record-breaking documentaries in 2004. This was the other one. Until we get a decent biopic of John Peel, this will be *the* portrait of the star-making DJ...

I've been wanting to see Motorcycle Diaries and A Very Long Engagement...that limited release business hurts me every year. Long Engagement is kind of like "Amelie at War" with Tatou and Jeunet but I want to see that one even more.

10.) Y Tu Bamf Tambien : The heartbreaking story of a young girl who, in order to feed her impoverished South American family, sells her Nightcrawler on E-Bay.
9.) The Quest For Iscandar : I can't wait for the twelve DVD releases, each with 7 hours of additional footage of Frodo eating breakfast.
8.) National Audit : The latest Nick Cage/Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster in which Cage plays a heroic IRS auditor who must...oh who cares? Things explode.
7.) Brother Power the Geek The Movie : I was as skeptical as anyone of the casting of Scott Baio as BP, but darned if he didn't make me tear up a little.
6.) Too Stupid To Move : The years most terrifying story of yet another person seeing ghosts.
5.) Lord of the Rings IX: Electric Boogaloo
4.) Freaks : Thank God that Disney had Ron Howard do a big-budget feel-good version of the Tod Browning film. My twins, Muffy and Maddy, love playing with the McDonald's Happy Meal toy of the Pinheads.
3.) Joel Schumacher's Cats : Hmmn. Who would have guessed he was such a fan of musical theater?
2.) Lord of the Rings XXIV: Outtakes, Blooper Reel, Producer's Home Movies : The epic finally winds down to a momentary pause in sucking money from our wallets.
1.) Flimsy Comedy But With Gratuitous Nudity : I'll be buying the DVD.

Sorry, remake of a snuff; maybe something like Last House on the Left or something.

Braveheart wasn't great, the dialogue and message is good and it's basis is fine, but the fighting scenes were pretty bad and if I want a movie like Braveheart I'll watch Lord of the Rings.

Lethal Weapon is okay, but there are so many parodies of it these days. I guess I'm mostly mad at Mel for the fact of how sucky and predictable Signs was . . .

The first Braveheart was okay, but then they started making all those sequels. Sean Connery comes back to life, then there was the awful one with Mario Van Peebles in it, and then they had to bring in the Braveheart's brother from the Braveheart TV series to do the last one. That Queen song from the soundtrack still rules, though.

There's an Aqua Teen episode where Shake sort of blends the two together. They're both movies about Scots with swords, so I've never seen any real problem treating them as the same film. Besides, Robert the Bruce charging the English lines at Bannockburn would have been much improved with him shouting "There can be only one!" and a rocking Queen soundtrack.

Since y'all use the same name as my icon, I hadda comment!

These movies really made a difference in my life

But you neglected to include "Vampire Sword Fight: The Motion Picture"

Actually, there were a couple movies this year I really enjoyed (real ones!)

Team America
Fahrenhype 9/11 (busting the fat one's lies)
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle
The Incredibles (despite the hype a solid super hero movie)
Garden State

Excellent posts by both Hail and CapSpalding (the Mencken quote certainly helped a bit as well).

Even Return of the King had a Braveheart-like entry...the leader strolling about on his horse yacking about pride-this and love of country-that and that all this is worth dying for junk. It's hard to call Return of the King cliche were it not for the painfully derivative Shakespeare in every other page of the book and therefore five minutes of the film. Still a great movie and if the Extended version counts as 2004 it must apear here on my top ten...the more Witch King and Orc footage the better, as my only real problem with Lord of the Rings is that generally speaking...well, the good guys won.

hmm...must have missed that one...but I have all 3 seasons on DVD...and have seen every episode...multiple times....but I think you are thinking of Dumber Dolls, where Meatwad wants a Jiggle Billy doll, but ends up getting Happy Time Harry with his "Action Bills". Harry ends up turning out to be a masochistic white trash maniac, wanting nothing more than to die. Shake decides he will give him the opposite, and throw him off the cliff to make him a highlander...big discussion happens, and Shake jumps off too...and becomes THE HIGHLANDER! I saw Dawn of the Dead as I'm a huge horror fan. Besides The Others, 28 Days Later and Frailty I really don't think we've seen an original horror film in years. Dawn of the Dead was a pleasant surprise though. The first five minutes were great but overall the film fell short...then again it's hard to remake a film that is more noted for being innovative than good. Zombie films are a tired genre and 28 Days Later was just a different and high quality take on it. Saw was horrendous. What's next for horror? I think we should see a spike in some films that learn to apply CGI techniques with realism (like Gaspar Noe did in the opening scene of Irreversible)...from what I understand remakes of older ghost films are working hard at doing this right now (Amityville Horror and the Changling)...it would be nice to see new convincing ghost movies. I also think that realistic and shocking gore combined with a compelling story has to be the way to go. What good is horror if it doesn't seem real? It becomes comedy essentially. For the record...the original Amityville was terrible minus the "Get Out!" scene, so it's could use a remake...The Changling though? Leave it alone you unholy bastards!

Resident Evil though? I saw the first one and found myself waiting patiently to see Milla Jovavich get naked...after .3 seconds of that little cheap thrill, I got bored real fast.

Anyone looking forward to any specific films for 2005? (excluding the obvious Episode III and Batman Begins). Quite Surprisingly, I find myself anticipating Johnning Depp in Burton's Willy Wonka.

hail_eris
12/29/2004, 12:42
Oh, yeah. I've become thoroughly convinced that Johnny Depp can play *any* part (he's come a long way from Jump Street). The preview looks especially Burtonesque, although I didn't notice any Oompa Loomps (I know they'll be in there, I just expect them to be especially weird). I'm also looking forward to Burton's animated project, "The Corpse Bride", which is set to debut in September.

And, not wanting to steal any thunder from Batman, the big comic movie I'm looking forward to is Sin City. Batman might be a fun movie, but Sin City has a shot at being a great film. Be intersesting to see if it lives up to its potential.

Man, until I got to this thread, I didn't realize how many bad or just lackluster ones that I have seen this year.
In no particvular order:
1) Anchorman
2) Saw (definitely not a teen slasher movie, altho' I fear a sequel will kill it)
3)Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
4) National Treasure
5) The Incredibles
6) Was Spiderman 2 this year?
7) Saw part of Shawn of the Dead, greatly enjoyed it, especially when it was hard to tell who was a zombie and who was just going to work.

I forgot:
Sky Captain
Definitely a good movie that hit almost all of the Pulp Fiction cliches. (Where else do you get the impression that a major city has a contingency plan involving giant robots?)

Yeah, I think that-along with Clancy Brown instead of Mel Gibson- would have made Braveheart rule.

And then you add on Sean Connery!

And don't forget Chris ####ing Lee as Dracula.

And for those who did not like AVP, suppossedly the film was cut by the studio to appeal to a wider audience (PG-13). The director said he anticipated an R rating and was over ridden by the studio. I have not seen it yet but, I will wait for the Director's Cut.

The Passion was sort of a compilation of the major gospels...so like it or not it was right on.

Not enough is known about William Wallace to make a perfectly accurate depiction and so further liberties were taken in some respects too...I still think it is hands down one of the best films of that decade.

Typical.

I wanted to update everyone that I finally saw Hotel Rwanda and a little film called Sideways...without getting into it too much the latter blew me away and would be amidst my top ten but the former was a big disappointment but look for Cheadle to pick up an Oscar anyway (he was truly great in a mediocre film).

Everything about Boogie Nights was great. My introduction to Paul Thomas Anderson... AND Heather Grahame.

On a side note, I saw the Aviator on New years day... and I feel that it will be in my top ten when the final list is compiled late February. A late cap gives me time to include things like Sideways, Hotel Rwanda, and A Very Long Engagement.

Boogie Nights is one of my all time favorites. Any time a screenplay can create distinguishable characters and make you sympathize with like 30 of them is remarkable. P.T. Anderson is something special...I hope we hear from him again soon.

Super Size Me could have been about any restaurant out there (almost). I was actually disappointed at how simplistic and obvious it turned out to be.

Although the ending was obvious, there are millions and millions of people out there that don't realize the effects of what they eat. Yes, it would have been the same for Burger King, Wendy's, or any other fast food chain, but in order to keep with the experiment, he just kept with McD's. Just like the ending was going to be obvious to people with a brain, it's pretty obvious the effects would be the same at other resturaunts as well.
As for caffeine, not everyone gets hooked on things so easily, but I used to have to drink it all the time. It was a ##### to get off of and I'm glad I did. Think of people who have to have coffee every morning just to get going. It's not just limited to colas.

The only movie I saw in 04 was SpiderMan2 because ....well i don't have to explain it to you....Raimi, Spidey, Kirsten Dunst as MJ :) nuff said.

My 1 y.o. son keeps me out of the theatres and I have to wait for DVDs.

Although I'm looking forward to Incredibles. That's going to be a blast. And for you Mamet fans out there, my wife is working on his new one. A very disturbing script to be sure.

And with a bit of luck, I will be working as well!!!!! ;)

Kirsten Dunst was the worst part about the Spiderman movies. She looks nothing like the model that MJ should be.

Hard pressed to make a ranked list of ten, but I'll try

1. incredibles
1. Napoleon Dynamite (tie)
3. Spidey 2
4. hero
5. national treasure
6. harry potter 3

maybe some others

Blade 3 was a disappointment, Shrek 2 didn't really do much for me either. Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou was only Wes Anderson's 3rd best (it beat Tennenbaums for me).

I saw (and liked) a bunch of other movies, but not enough to make the top 10ish list.
