View Full Version : At long last, WakandaMan's customs are on the net!

Well I've been meaning to do it for years now, and I finally borrowed my brother's digital camera so that I could show the world my custom heroclix.
Most of them are just costume changes, including a lot of movie versions. My most exciting ones are probably Man-Ape (on a R Abomination base) and Forge (on a R Psylocke base).
There are a few others, most notably a nifty classic Black Panther costume, but the camera went flat on me before I could do them all, so I'll have to add them at another time. Also I tried to take a photo of my shiny metallic coated Meteorite with the Thunderbolts logo but it didn't turn out right, so I'll have to do that one again as well.
By the way if anyone would like me to, I can e-mail you the .JPG file I created with the Alpha Flight and Thunderbolt logos. Just send me a PM if you're interested.
Here it is:

Feedback is appreciated!

Thanks man. The Dr. Strange was begging me to fix him when I first got him. Unfortunately I had the Rookie first so he's the only one that's fixed. One day I'll get around to fixing the E and the V as well. :ermm:
Bullseye was definitely the hardest of the Movie ones, since he needed a totally different sculpt. Although looking through my pics it's really hard to see a lot of the detail on Blade. He's got some really cool body armour that took ages to make.
And i just noticed that my Vet She-Hulk still has freakin blue hands!! How could I have not noticed that before!! I'll have to paint them gamma green ASAP.

haha, very sick mods Wak, the Forge had me very envious and eager to create my own as soon as I get finished with my Authority Customs.
Bravo on the Brotherhood Rogue as well, I'm glad someone finally did one!

Man-Ape....Nice....I like the figures people never think of making!
When I mod, I try to come up with ones that Wizkids is unlikely to make....Man-Ape has to be on that list. Very cool!

Dude those are great man. Some of the best I have ever seen (on the internet). I think my favorite goes to Docter Strange.

cool mods, and in answer rogue did not fly at first. her only mutant abilities are her touchy-stealy powers :p
in her first appearance (avengers annual #10) she drained the powers of Carol Danvers permanently (well as permanent as things can be in the MU) and then had the flight, strength resilience etc.....

Say whaaaaaaaaaaat. The Forge is sick! And I love the Alpha Flight TA! How did you DO that?!

Very Nice work! I like your paint jobs a lot. Always nice to see someone shading a fig. (Though I'm not one to talk as I only relatively recently decided to paint to something other than "Play level" myself). The selection of some of the more obscure figs was awesome. I have one small suggestion for Sitwell, if you don't mind. You could get some jeweler's wire from an art supply store to make him in scale glasses. Then again, I'm just nit-picking because they rock. :)

Hey Wak,
Nice customs. I make only costume variations and progression mods myself too and it was nice to see some I haven't tried yet.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I agree, although given some of the obscure characters that WK makes at times it difficult to say whether they ever will or not. Man-Ape is a personal favourite of mine, since I like all thinkgs Wakandan and tend to enjoy super-strength characters a lot.
Did you know that in his second appearance (Avengers #78)he actually defeated both Captain America and the Black Panther and was starting to put the beat down on Goliath (Hawkeye in his Giant-Man days) until the rest of the Avengers showed up, making him retreat.
When I realized that not only would R Abomination's dial work brilliantly for him, but also that the sculpt would be a good starting point, I had to make him.

Thanks Manchine. That is high praise indeed.
The Doc does look a LOT better than his usual paint job. And it was fun too! Not especially difficult, but fairly time consuming.

I made a JPG image of a reverse Maple Leaf logo (and a Thunderbolts logo at the same time) on a black background. Then I printed it out on an inkjet label, and cut it out using a hole punch. That gave it some white fraying around the edge though, so after I stuck it over the old TA I coloured in the edges of the sticker with a black permanent overhead projection marker. If you look really closely you might be able to see the edges of the sticker, but probably not on the photo. You have to look fairly close in real life.
The hardest part is getting the backing off of the tiny label after I punch it out.
Brazil has a similar method, but he uses expensive decal paper which no doubt be indistinguishable from a real TA.
I did try to take a close up of the logo, but it was out of focus. Next time I add some more pictures I'll try it again.
And if anyone wants it, I'm happy to send the file.

Who did you use as a base figure for Man-Ape? I may want to try that one out!
Thanks for the history lesson also. :)

Thanks (and thanks to all the other postive comments as well).
What costume variants and progression mods have you made?
Not that I really need ideas, since I always seem to have a dozen or so in mind. I just rarely get time to sit down and make them. Most of the mods here were made over the course of the last 2 years (although the Puck I painted just yesterday).

I used Abomination. I cut off his arms first and repositioned them, although that isn't really necessary...I just did that so that he'd look different. Abomination really is perfect, because if you look at recent pictures of Man-Ape (like Thunderbolts #75) his shoes have two toes in them. I also cut out his lower jaw and used the top part of his head for the ape. I used air-drying clay over his body and scraped it with a toothpick to make it look hairy.
Finding a head that was in proportion was a pain. I tried using a SHIELD Agents head but it looked tiny on that big body, so I ended up using a dreadnaughts head and re-shaping it a little.

I have a taste for obscure characters too, so I really like this Man-Ape...By the way, are there many Wakandan heroes/Villains?
I'm no X-Men fan, but I can understand how other people can miss a character like Forge. The one you did is really nice looking...I can see parts of a shield agent, shield trooper, and maybe a colossus' leg...But where does the others parts come from?
It's also nice to have those rookie and vet Quicksilver...I found it strange when Wizkids didn't do it...
Good job too with the Alpha Flight logo...This kind of thing should be Tournament Legal! We'll have to do the same with T-Bolts!
Add more pictures when there are news!

Not a lot. Classic Black Panther villians from Wakanda are Man-Ape, Killmonger and more recently Achebe (the Joker to his Batman). Killmonger also used to have a whole bunch of underlings which were pretty lame like Baron Macabre.
For heroes, the main one aside from T'challa is Vibraxas, a kid who got vibrationary powers in a vibranium experiment. Then there's all of Panther's usual supporting cast like the Dora Milaje, Zuri, W'kabi, Taku, Queen Divine Justice, etc...

I'm not a huge X-fan either, but I do very much like Forge, and I felt very strongly that Enhancement suits him far better than it does Psylocke. You'll notice he's on a R Psylocke base.
He's mostly a SHIELD Agent as you picked. The leg is the SHIELD Agent leg, I just painted it and drew the lines on there. His left hand is actually from a R Black Cat I had spare, holding the stick upright so that it looks like a gadget. The pony tail is from the streamers off of a CT Elektra's spear (she's good for something after all). The pieces of his belt were all offcuts from various things, and I can't for the life of me remember what I used for the end of his gun. It was a long time ago that I made it.
It's also nice to have those rookie and vet Quicksilver...I found it strange when Wizkids didn't do it...

Well hopefully WK will have learnt from the uproar created by Alpha Flight and will actually give the T-bolts their own TA as they deserve. I also created T-bolts logos, but the photo of my Meteorite didn't work very well.

Will do. I'll take some more pictures as soon as I can, mostly so I can show off my Black Panther mod. :)

They're coming, they're coming. I'm actually in the middle of a Citizen V mod right now, and I have big plans to make MACH-I and Songbird. If I score a second Giant-Man I'll probably have a crack at Atlas as well.

Really?! Are those official news?
Where could we read this great announcement?
WakandaMan
01/09/2005, 20:33
No it's not official, it's just me speculating. Wizkids does at least have a history of learning from their mistakes. I don't have my hopes up, but you just never know...

I wonder if they really learnt something...There already was the problem when we had the vet Meteorite, and when we had Ultimates Vindicator, and we still had an Avengers Alpha Flight...
But I really hope you'll be right!
Very groovy. Glad you finally got the pictures up. Very nice facework on the figures. I've spent quite a bit of time touching up faces on figs I've gotten. Wizkids has gotten a lot better on the last couple sets. I remember getting Thor that looked like Bill the cat.

Heheh. Yeah thanks Brazil.
The first thing I do when I get new figures is check their eyeballs to make sure they're on the right place! ;) Fine black permanent overhead projection markers are excellent!
