Wow, if ever there was a time when choosing a best set within any given year..it is now. 2004 gave us another fantastic set in Unleashed, and the best Marvel set to date in Ultimates.
However, what makes Unleashed slightly better for me, was that Ultimates, gave us too many characters that we had before. Granted it was the theme of the set..but still.
Mutant Mayhem was a blah set comparatively. It's plus, is that it was a set geared to the comic fans. It still has some great pieces, but just doesn't have the combination of playable figures and likable/known characters like Unleashed and Ultimates.
Universe was ....well, it gave me 6 figs, new rules, and a mini map. Not really worth the mention, though I can see how newer players could benefit from it.

For 2004, the best set has to be Ultimates. They finally released most of the characters from The Ultimates. Now if we can get a new Nick Fury, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Wasp then I'm set.

I said Mutant Mayhem. I'm not a big mutant fan, but this set had more playable figures than all the rest. There's a place for just about everyone. It didn't follow the standard that most other sets have fallen into:
Rookie - not good enough
Experienced - good play piece
Veteran - too costy for what he does
Most pieces in Mutant Mayhem were very playable across their versions, and we got more choice with that set than any. If you don't have enough points for the Vet, you don't have to change figures because the other versions ####, just downgrade. Unleashed set the standard for top tier figs, and Ultimates had a few winning keys, but Mutant Mayhem was the set that provided the best value for me.

Ultimates!
Both the regular pieces and the uniques were great. Granted the uniques in Unleashed are better overall than Ultimates. But the Ultimates regular pieces had too many useful pieces and excellent reduxes to be ignored.
Unleashed by far. DC has the best sets so far and Legacy looks rule Marvel again.
Mutant Mayhem because is quite playable and halted the power creep

I went with Unleashed as well. You just can't beat the power and the awesome sculpts of the Kingdom Come figures, right down to the Bat Sentry. Unleashed set a high standard for DC sets, and it looks like Legacy will maintain it! Can't wait for an Ultraman versus KC Supes battle!
I quit right after Ultimates came out, but MM got me back in, so it gets my vote!

Mutant Mayhem. I was getting really tired of Heroclix before Unleashed - Unleashed made it worse with the power creep, Ultimates stopped me from quitting but I was annoyed by some of the power pieces in the set.. it was Mutant Mayhem which "brought balance to the force". Now my tournament style teams are generally 50% Mutant Mayhem, 30% Universe-compatible, and 20% Ultimates. I like running spoiler teams that outdo pre-planned TK/Power Piece teams with Psychic Blast, Barrier, PC, Outwit, and Phasing.
1. Mutant Mayhem
2. Ultimates
3. Unleashed
4. Universe (darn set retirements!)

Mutant Mayhem was the choice for me. Although I disliked Alpha Flight not getting a TA, the set included 2 Avengers I have been waiting for in Firestar and Wonderman. Besides that you had what I believe was a lot of good to excellent rev characters that where well-rounded and playable.
As a side note I predict Unleashed to win, since DC fans only have one set to vote on that is their set of choice. While the majority of Marvel fans that will vote for Marvel have to split their choices amongst 2 sets. Just my 2 cent on the matter.

You know, I'm not surprised no one has voted for Universe, especially since the claim of "the best" of IC and XP is debatable. However I am surprised that Ultimates is so close with Mutant Mayhem, because I consider MM worse than XP.

Gotta go with Unleashed, mainly because I'm a Hal Jordan freak, but also because the set had lots of fun characters, new powers, and really opened the flood gates of what you could do with really powerful characters.

I voted for Unleashed because of the Kingdom Come Uniques, mostly, and the Bat-related stuff. Playwise and characterwise it is my favourite.
Second characterwise is Mutant Mayhem, playwise it's Ultimates.
Universe stinks.

Good call by Supergene.
I much prefer playing DC figures, but Ultimates did set a new standard for playability. Indeed, the Ultimate LEs were just so utterly playable that I'm constantly seeing them being used in regular events.
BUT, for figures that I WANT to play, and for building scenarios, I have to go with Unleashed - and Legacy should set a new standard as well! Of course, I'm pretty impressed with WizKids that they can keep topping themselves set after set.

I'm a huge fan of Mutant Mayhem...it's a BLAST to play sealed (even with some scary looking U's), and has the unfair advantage of bringing all of the new elements to the game.
I'm really curious to see how MM stacks up against Legacy...that should be a good Marvel vs. DC test! :)

I voted for Ultimates because it has some of the best uniques and REV in the game to date. Lot of DC fans in the Realms because playability wise Ultimates and Mayhem both smoke Unleashed (can we say Fanboys ;) )
Mayhem was decent for REVs and about half the uniques but the LEs drag it down into the mud with Ultimates and Unleashed trying to hold it under til it drowns. I pray to all that is holy that Jon L or whoever gets their act together with the Legacy LEs.
Universe was a bit of a cop out. I would have been impressed if they had charged less. Seeing as how it was all reissued stuff they could have charged 4 dollars for a 4 pack instead of a 2 pack. The starter pieces are well worth buying but I don't buy the wieney 2 packs.

... and that is why, to my own surprise, I voted for MM as well.
I'm much more of a DC fan, but MM by far provided the more fascinating pieces, especially in that 40-60 point range, where it's really easy to plug 'em into your old teams. E Cloak, V Sable, V Puck, E Northstar, Skullbuster and Vanisher are extremely playable. And you gotta love Loki as well.
I was very excited about Unleashed, but in the long run, it didn't really give me much. I gave me Legionnaires that I wanted but complain about all the time, more unplayable Bat-villains like Scarecrow, more overpriced Superman enemies, and KC figures that I could never pull from the boosters. Had to use uniques from Ultimates as trade bait to get 'em. I like V Fate, the Suicide Squad and the Gotham cops, but the set is weighed down by a lot of negatives.
I voted Ultimates - easily my favourite to date.
I was surprised to see it noticably behind Unleashed - but then it dawned on me - the classic politician's ploy :)
The 'Marvel vote' is split among three sets (well...two really!!) I think there will be a good portion of people who will vote Marvel or DC, regardless of the clix - they just like the comics. (I'm semi-ashamed to say that I'm one of those voters)
Had there been a second DC set this year, I think the results would be noticably different
(...but what am I griping for??? a second DC set would have come at the expense of a Marvel set :) )
Anyway, with the exception of Ultimates (for me), I daresay, even as a Marvel fan, DC has a lower percentage of 'garbage figs' - could this just be a result of there being fewer DC figs overall??
My final comment is this: even as a Marvel fan, I still get excited/interested over the release of a DC or Indy set - just the mark of a good game, I guess......keep 'em coming, WK
3 new sets and a rehash......
I voted Unleashed, which rocked.
Mutant Mayhem was second.
Ultimates only ranks because it was a new set (though many rehashes, here, too.)
Universe- would have been better if it dumped Con Artist and some other losers and kept named figures (and gave Vision Exploit Weakness...)
i had to go with unleashed and so far legacy will have my vote for next year
I have to say MM because i found a lot a pieces that are very useful. Northstar,Deadpool,Cable, bishop Fantomex, Hulk(yeah a hulk with charge), and not to mention the feat cards really great

I doubt this will affect their future plans...I don't think anyone is surprised that existing players actually like new stuff as opposed to a set of largely reprints. I have a feeling most of the people that Unvierse was aimed at don't frequent the realms just yet.

I agree. For the most part. As someone who wasn't gonna get DC and now has to go back and get old DC stuff I am looking forward to the DC Universe. It isn't the fact it was a rehash so much as the fact the rereleased some of the figs they did. I hope they choose more popular figs for the DC Universe and not base it on which molds can be reused to make things cheaper.

I can certainly agree with that.
Mutant Mayhem in particular seems to be moving far away from one dimiensional/generic support figs, and Legacy looks to continue that trend...hopefully DCU will do the same...

I went with Ultimates because Thor and Hulk rock that set!!! Unleashed I think has a better set of Uniques but the Ultimates set is more balanced. Both the Unique and REV pieces are very playable and the ULtimates Team Ability is just too SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! Thanks.

01/25/2005, 18:22
The Cosmic's Opinion:
1) Ultimates- Gotta love THE BIG SIX-Carnage,Thor,Phoenix,Magneto,Ironman,and Hulk.
VERY PLAYABLE SET!!!
2) Unleashed-Not a huge DC fan but very impressed in the set and my favorite part was the introduction of the KC characters
3) MM-Many New types of gameplay and figures, but not near as interesting as the Ultimate Universe and DC's Powerhouse set.
4) Universe- Because paying $4 for a 2-figure booster of figures you already have is ridiculous and though I love my classic figures this set just didn't spark
SPLITSECOND
01/25/2005, 18:44
Have to go with Ultimates. Unleashed had more powerful figures...but their point cost makes them hard to support properly in 300pt games.
Ultimates had powerhouses you could field in a 300pt game and have a good chance of success with. Plus, the Ultimates team abiltiy gave us the relatively cheap way to deal with Stealth Team hogwash.
Oh...and my favorite super-hero Captain America was finally done right :)

That's kind of faulty logic. A little over 50% is DC, and if you believe anyone on these boards, Marvel's twice as popular as DC. If you're working under the assumption that DC fans would only vote for a DC set, then why would Marvel fans be voting for the DC set too?
"Marvel: Universe featuring the best of IC and XP 0 votes 0%"
Perhaps Wizkids shold take a hint from this voting. NO ONE likes retirement and reissuing of figures that are already available. I wish they would just continue with the power creep and let us use our old figures(let us implies tourny's)

Yeah, so Unleashed is going to win this poll. Why? DC junkies are going to concentrate all of their votes into that, while Marvel Zombies split their votes between Ultimates and Mutant Mayhem.

No. It just means there are 3 more DC fans who voted than Marvel. If it was 178 to 50 than you'd have a point.
Jastazdevl1
01/26/2005, 10:23
And 3 out of 354 is less than 1% of the possible votes. Not exactly what you'd call a landslide.
No, it disproves the point made by Jastazdevl1, who said the split was DC biased because of the split Marvel votes. No one mentioned landslide, though the differences in opinion between the Marvel sets shows definite preferences between Ultimates and Mutant Mayhem, not Marvel vs. DC.

I voted for Ultimates. Finally a Captain America I want to play. Thanks to the non-retirement of great uniques like Juggernaut, Universe almost got my vote, but then I realized this is not only the worst set of 2004, it's the worst set period.
For all of you who are implying that Legacy is the best set of 2005, isn't that a lot like a movie in January claiming to be the best movie of the year. I admit Legacy looks awesome, but I for one can not wait to see the sets for the rest of this year. We'll probably see a new Fantastic Four, possible new stats and sculpts for DC staples in DC Universe and maybe fianlly Namor.

And now Marvel combined is in the lead. It doesn't matter really. We can debate this for a month, and all that really matters is that Unleashed is going to get voted the best set. Is it? I didn't vote for it, because although I appreciate the Hal Green Lantern fig, and respect KC Supe's power, I prefer the new game mechanics in MM and recognize and use more figures from Ultimates. It was a toss-up really, and all three sets were great, but Ultimates earned more of my money, so I voted for it.
Agreed, even though it is tied, now. I bought less Ultimates than either Mutant Mayhem(1 case+) or Unleashed (2+ cases). Opinions will vary. My point was that it wasn't a Marvel/DC vote exclusively.

One was a set of nothing but reprints which introduced the idea of retirement.
One was full of what a lot of people thought were "repeat" characters, even though they were from a 'parallel universe'.
One was way too full of obscure mutants, and tried to tell long time fans that Alpha flight was part of the Avengers.
One gave us KC Supes, Hal Jordan, Cyborg and Raven of the Teen Titans, DCs premire mage Dr. Fate, the Suicide Squad TA and Shazam!
