View Full Version : A question about the Ultimates.....
Ok, I just finished the Ultimates trades I got for my birthday and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. I had heard they were good but man, it's been a while since I enjoyed a comic so much. I do have one question though....
What was the deal with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? They were in like two panels of the entire thirteen issues! What was the point of even having them join? Made no sense whatsoever.
For that matter, I felt like I missed some things... for instance, the whole series jumped off with banner having evidently already turned into the Hulk.. did I miss something? And Black Widow and Hawkeye just kind of showed up, it never really explained how they were connected to Fury (it seemed like they had a previous connection... again, it felt like I had missed something.)
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
The Hulk had already appeared in other Ultimate lines.
Fury and SHIELD are dealing with Powers all the time.
The implications were that the Ultimates were the public face
of the super powered team, and that there are/were others
also working for SHIELD that they keep out of the public eye
for more covert operations.
Which makes the way that they've been using Cap at the
start of series 2 rather odd.

Ultimate Hulk had appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man before.
Hawkeye and Black Widow were the original "Black ops" ultimates.
The Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch thign is weird. Are they really bro and Sis? They have implied a "romantic" infatuation between the two, but never said anything outright.
The original 13 issue run on Ultimates is the best run on any book. Ever. That's right, I said it. It's the best comic flowing storyline of all time.

Hulk and Black Widow both appeared in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up previous to being in Ultimates. (Other than the F4 story, this was a pretty good book.) Hawkeye was mentioned a few times in the first trade. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have a more prominent role in the "Ultimate War" storyline. I believe it's an Ultimate X-Men trade. They're kind of a joke as of Ultimates Vol. 2.
Yeah, they're actually pretty big in UXM - they led the Brotherhood in Magneto's absence. It just seemed like there wasn't really any reason to include them in Ultimates at all, except maybe because they're core Avengers in 616.
So the Hulk already manifested in Spider-Man? I may have to track that down....
It was in Team-Up rather than USM I think.
I reckon that QS and SW were taken into 'protective' custody,
after they sold out Magneto in Ultimate War, and ended up
working with the Ultimates that way.
Well, as Quicksilver mentions a few times, he moves SO fast that you never see him, except on film if you slow it down. I also imagine they aren't exactly in the public face either, so perhaps the Witch chills in the back and does her thing.

in the ultimate war storyline and in other ultimate xmen tpb's, magneto refers to them as "the twins", so i assume they really are bro and sis, batbuddy. also, they did shack up with the ultimates after betraying magneto and learning that he returned, for protection, i guess.
i havent read the ultimates yet, but i have been getting the tpb's of ultimate xmen lately and am very impressed. the story line is awesome and definitely worth taking a look at (just my two cents) :)
