View Full Version : The Comic Book Talk-Show-Host TOC!!!

Kalel21

It’s the one debate that comic book fans have been arguing vehemently since Action Comics #1 hit the newstands: Which comic book character would make the best talk-show host? Now, finally, this debate can be put to rest, as we have the COMIC BOOK TALK SHOW HOST TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS!!

Here’s how it works. Each host (and his designated comedic side kick) films a pilot. Through the use of clones and robots, he uses the exact same guests as his rival in that round. He is also given the same subject for a skit that must be performed during the show.

The viewers (that’s you) then decide who had the better show. Hosts of failed pilots are eliminated until there is only one host remaining to seize control of a lifetime network contract.

So here’s the potential hosts and their comedic sidekicks, paired with their 1st round competitors:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olson) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

So—Round 1, Match 1:

Reed Richards vs. Doctor Doom.

Filmed before a live audience. Guests are Bernie Mac, the mystically reanimated corpse of Humphrey Bogart, musical guest Kelly Clarkson and Cameron Diaz.
SKIT: “Breaking a date to go save (or conquer) the world.”

So who would have the best show?

I have a day off tomorrow, so I will check the results on Thursday. In the extremely unlikely event this thread has generated any interest, I will then post the winner and continue on to Match 2.

While Doom loses the skit he scores points with being funnier then richards, who isnt funny at all. My vote is Doom
but if this was human torch and ben it would be different

Dr. Doom has one key thing that Reed doesn't bring to this table: he's got catch phrases. BUT, Doombots aren't comedy gold, and Ben Grimm IS. I think Ben could play off of Bernie Mac better than Victor could, would have greater familiarity with Bogart's movies, and would be more endearing once Kelly Clarkson sat down. Reed would play a better straight man than Doom and a Doombot, who would be two-straight men.

The skit would be funnier with Dr. Doom, though. Reed would just fumble and be awkward. But Doom sitting at a table across from a Doombot in drag... then fumbling twice... "Doom must go. Doom has a... meeting." "Oh, Lord Doom, you're so silly!" "Doom does not jest! This... MEETING is of UTMOST import!" "Hahaha! Oh, stop, Lord Do-" ZAM! Then annihilating the Doombot maitre'd on the way out the door.

Still, since the skit is a small enough part and guests and interplay make most of the show, I'm giving it to Reed and Ben. Victor and Doombot just aren't pop culture enough to work with the guests they'd meet.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Gee whiz, a few people are actually responding to what must be the silliest thread I've ever started. ;)

If someone else posts to break the tie, I'll continue this for at least one more round.

Well since i would like to see this continue I will cast my vote for Reed And Ben. Reed is as stiff as Gore But Ben is funnier than all three of the others combined

Rofflecopter! Kalel21 you just made my year.

Wow--actually got three votes. AND got someone to use the word "Rofflecopter."

The Winner of Round 1, Match 1: Reed Richards!!!! Doom's talk show is regulated to the realm of bootleg DVDs bought at conventions.

ROUND 1 Contestents:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olson) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 2:

Captain America vs. the Red Skull

Guests: Ben Stiller, Pat Sajek, Ulysses S. Grant reincarnated as a 12-year-old girl and musical guests The Vienna Boys Choir.
SKIT: "The dangers of grocery shopping while in costume."

Who would win the ratings war this time?

OOOPS!!! I honestly didn't think of that.

:o

Does that mean you give the round to Cap?

Clix776
04/04/2005, 18:41
This round (again) goes to the hero, and Adam Sandler has eloquently outlined why in his classic "Hannukah Song": "So many Jews are in Show-Biz..." In this day and age, even witha charismatic rotting corpse as a sidekick, Reddy just isn't going to cut it with today's audiences.

Besides, picturing Captain America walking down a grocery aisle with that shield on his back, blissfully unaware that he's knocking off one V-8 Splash container after another leaving a trail of fruit-flavored destruction in his wake is priceless. The Vienna Boys Choir could sing something appropriately dramatic and disastrous to accent it, just as the icing on the cake.

Wow. Three votes again--so the world's most senseless TOC thread limps on.

Red Skull is the winner this time. Poor Cap goes to that big TV land in the sky.

Round 1 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 3:

Superman vs. Braniac.

GUESTS: Former Vice-President Al Gore, Jimmy Fallon, Mr. T and musical guest Britney Spears.
SKIT: Dealing with an unflattering picture on the front page of the "Daily Planet."

Who wins the ratings war?

Clix776
04/05/2005, 17:25
The Red Baron: See, the difference between your Red Skullton Show and mine is that you're picturing a zombie and I'm picturing a rotting corpse. Though I must admit, the thought of a zombie buying groceries is pretty dang funny.

Kalel21: Key question - is this the villainous Brainiac or the Legion of Superheroes Brainiac. Every other match up is hero/villain, but you've got the heroic Brainiac's monkey sidekick as the comedic sidekick. I'm AGONIZING over my decision here!

Thank You,

Brainiac takes it. You have perfectly calculated humor paired with a monkey.

Superman bravely fights back, but Jimmy's not that funny (he could do a friends-style sitcom ok, but not as a talk show dude), and falls in battle.

3 days later, the planet is blown up as a result.

Clix776
04/06/2005, 10:16
Have we finally found the arena where Brainiac will finally best the Man of Steel? That guest lineup has me thinking that could quite possibly be the case. First, Brainiac could sit and trade tales of inventing things with Al Gore, then he could mindwipe Jimmy Fallon, and his comedic sidekick would have no problems with sitting next to Britney Spears.

Meanwhile, Superman's apolitical stance would mean that his discourse with Al Gore would be severely hampered, he's very unlikely to remove Fallon permanently from the public scene, and Jimmy will be a stammering mess sitting next to someone as attractive as Britney. He'll probably make a fool of himself.

I think they'd be pretty even on Mr. T. And the skit? Well, Brainiac never gets good coverage in the Daily Planet, and high-level intellects are never known for their wit (more often they are not to quick on the gag uptake). Superman, on the other hand, would take the skit and run with it with multiple silly-stupid solutions figured out during the Silver Age. I can see the covers in my mind - Superman bursting through the door into the newsroom yelling "The Daily Planet has to be shut down!"; or Superman swooping in blasting a street corner newsstand with heat vision while some innocent Metropolis resident recoils, dropping his flaming paper, with Superman thinking "I can't let anyone read the Daily Planet - EVER AGAIN!"

Still, I'm thinking that Brainiac and KoKo will win with this setup.

Thanks for replying, Kalel21! Now I can finally stop refreshing the page and go get some sleep!

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark disagree on that one.

'Sides, Brainiac can always pull out the old 'I will replace you all with superior robots!' jokes, which never fail.

Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark disagree on that one. They may, but nonetheless in comics, extremely smart often maps to humor-impaired. Reed Richards, Brainiac 5, Hank Pym... there are exceptions, like the ultra-cool Steel ("I built this armor in my basement.") and the Beast, but brainy and geeky like to flock together.

Side question - what books did Asimov and Clark write that had gag-minded brainpower guys? Who were the guys, and what kinds of gags are we talking here?

Two votes for Brianiac, so it looks like the villain may win the ratings war again. (Shades of Jerry Springer!). Anyone else want to vote before we go to the next match?

04/06/2005, 10:59
This is a great concept. I'm in. Superman is probably impaired in the guest segments, with that whole awe-inspiring by his very presence thing. Fallon in particular would be a stammering mess, I think. Supes is amiable, but not the guy for a comedy show.

Braniac, on the other hand, can probably be just condescending and abusive with guests to be funny and even a little endearing.

You're probably right about Superman taking the skit, but it's not enough to balance. Especially against the monkey.

Kalel21
04/06/2005, 11:03
Okay, Braniac definitely takes it. Superman's show goes the way of the planet Krypton.

Round 1 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey) (WINNER: BRANIAC)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 4:

Batman vs. Poison Ivy. The first lady host in the contest gets her chance.

Guests: Andy Dcik (sp. error to bypass filter), Martin Scorsese, A "Growing Pains" cast reunion, musical guest Beyonce.
SKIT: A call to duty (or to crime) while your costume is at the cleaners.

Who takes the ratings war this time?

SyxxPac
04/06/2005, 11:41
Ivy and Quinn would win this hands down. Batman can't be that funny, well I guess it would be funny to the fact the people would take his seriousness as comical but in the end Quinn as the sidekick takes the cake:

and blows it up at "Growing Pains" reunion. Blowing up cakes is always funny

Clix776
04/06/2005, 15:56
Man. I'm gonna have to vote for Ivy and Harley, here. Their girl-power angle could pull big ratings. I also agree with SyxxPac that there's one too many straight men on the Bat Allies team. Alfred can pull off the dry cut downs, but Batman won't be bringing the funny at all. Though him just staring at the guests with "The Look" until they broke and started talking would be awesome.

I think Batman would have the better sketch for this, too. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn both show their faces in costume, but Batman would either be prancing around in the cowl and cape and a set of boxers looking for his costume or going around in a paper bag, boxers and utility belt looking for his outfit. I think Alfred could deliver good lines here.

Still, at the end of the day, I think the girls will get the better repartee - especially with the endlessly effeminate Andy Dikc and the voluptuous Beyonce. There would also be the dent against the Bat that "Growing Pains" was a show about a happy, whole suburban family. I can see his eye twitching with barely restrained jealous rage from here.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Call me crazy, but I'm going to vote for Batman. He wouldn't be laugh-a-minute funny with the guests, but I can see him making the ocasional comment that doesn't seem funny at first and about ten seconds later you realize that it's utterly hysterical. I really like Alfred, too. Good counter if Bats gets too intense with the guests.

Q99
04/07/2005, 00:47
Side question - what books did Asimov and Clark write that had gag-minded brainpower guys? Who were the guys, and what kinds of gags are we talking here?

Hmm? I was actually talking about the guys themselves. Asimov had two jokebook and a bunch of essays which were quite good, and he and Clark often traded barbs. In addition to them both being science trained.

Oh yea, in brain power cool people in comics, don't forget Tony Stark, and Luthor, and Batman (well, all the Bats. Probably Barbara Gordon most of all), Titan's Cyborg, and so on. All have good wit in addition to being really smart.

michiganj24

Have to go with my girls Ivy and Harley
and now how the show will go down
First guest out Andy D typical interview segment but Andy is a great guest for anyone who can roll along with him. Harley will really shine in this area much like a feamle Andy Richter(much better sidekick that Ed Mcmahon) When Harley tries to steal the show Ivy's pet George (a giant walking ficus) drops a anvil on Harley, bidries surrond her head chirping away.

Skit Time
Aftermath of one of H&I's famous slumber parties(last seen in HQ the series)
PI "That is the last time I lt you talk me into inviting Cheetah"
HQ"How was i supposed to know she would be such a sourpuss. Dump one bucket of water over her and she goes crazy.'
PI" And she ruined our last good uniforms. I sent them to Gambi's to be taken care of but till then we got nothing.
Later that night. PI and HQ are woken by a noise
They go to investogate and see it is Gotham's newest crime fighting duo Foxy C and her sidekick TuT Tut (Andy)
PI summons a fern to cover herself and Harley grabs a pizza boys outfit (sadly all that was left of the delivery boy) for coevrage. A big brawl with old school Adam West style sound effectsUltimately ending when The heroes are led away by the cops for breakings and entterting and disturbing the peace.

Finally "Growing Pains" cast is brought out. Ivy gets miffed as Harley told her that it was a gardeing show
Ultimately ends in a madcap chase scene like from Benny Hill

I will have to go with the girls on this, late night needs the 2 of them on TV.

Although Batman will do his best even desperate enough to sing with Beyonce in a rendition of "Soul Sister" All hell will break loose as Nightwing storms in crying that Batman is always stealing his thunder, at the same time Huntress will storm in as well asking to be truly accepted in the bat family.

Kalel21
04/07/2005, 10:26
Well, the girls win this one big time and the DVD of Batman's show ends up as an obscure trophy in the Batcave, hidden behind the giant penny.

Round 1 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey) (WINNER: BRANIAC)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 5:

Spider Man vs. Doc Ock

Guests: Stephen Hawkins, Lindsey Lohan, Vince Vaughn, and musical guest Jimmy Buffett
SKIT: At a meeting of superheroes (or villians)--trying to decide what kind of pizza to order.

Who wins this match?

04/07/2005, 11:54
you can never beat J. Jonah contest over. spider wins

Clix776
04/07/2005, 14:04
This is a one-sided match - Spider-Man and JJJ have so much going for them, I don't even know if it matters WHAT Doctor Octopus and the Sandman come up with. Spider-Man's going to be excellent with Stephen Hawking; Vince Vaughn was excellent as a nice guy who's not too successful in DodgeBall, so Spidey can tee off from there; and he knows how to talk with a good-looking redhead. Top it off with Jimmy Buffett and a skit about ordering pizza (which anyone who's spent as much time in college as Peter has is ready to do), and Spider-Man's natural comedic wit becomes an afterthought. This lineup was MADE for Peter Parker. JJJ will just be icing on the cake, grumbling continuously as Spidey's straight-man.

Doctor Octopus, on the other hand, will have a pissing contest with Stephen Hawking right out of the gate and I just can't see him or the hard-boiled con Sandman enjoying Jimmy Buffett's easy-going tunes. Sandman might be able to discuss "Made" with Vince Vaughn, but that would be the limit of it. I think Lindsay would be a flat guest in this lineup (push-up bra notwithstanding). The only saving grace this team has is the skit - supervillains ordering pizza sounds like comedy gold from the get go.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

SyxxPac
04/07/2005, 15:02
Agreed with the two above. Spiderman has a sense of humor and doesn't Jameson hate Spiderman if so it makes them funnier and more entertaining. Doc Oct and Sandman equals not funny no matter who their guests are or skits.

Cannot wait for later rounds when guests and skits will really matter on who wins.

Kalel21
04/07/2005, 15:09

Spidey wins Match #5. Doc Ock and Sandman are sent back to solitary without access to cable TV.

Round 1 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey) (WINNER: BRANIAC)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman) (WINNER: SPIDER MAN)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 6:

Cyclops vs. Mystique:
Guests: Keven Spacey, Roger Ebert, Jennifer Love Hewitt and musical guests: A time-displaced Benny Goodman and his Orchestra
SKIT: Interviewing applicants to be the new maid for your secret headquarters.

Who wins this time?

The Red Baron
04/08/2005, 11:38
I would kill myself before watching either. But I will vote for msytique just because cyclops is never ever funny. not once. And Destiny as a maid funny

SyxxPac
04/08/2005, 12:09
Agreed, Blind Maid = Funny. Cyclops = not funny. But.... with wolverine there it might be funny due to the bickering. I still have to give my vote to the girls though.

Clix776
04/08/2005, 13:36
Boy, this is a weak match-up. Neither of these teams are speaking to me saying "Watch us... watch us..." Mystique could pull people (read: men) in with sex appeal, and I think that's going to put her over the top on this one. Cyclops looks good physically, but that visor hides too much of his face to draw the ladies.

Blind Maid = Comedy Gold. Neil Simon knew that in "Murder By Death".

2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey) (WINNER: BRANIAC)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman) (WINNER: SPIDER MAN)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny) (WINNER: MYSTIQUE)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Round 1, Match 7:

Mister Miracle vs. Darkseid
Guests: Bruce Willis, Neve Campbell, Former presidential candidate Bob Dole and musical guest Amy Grant
SKIT: A parody of "The Godfather."

SyxxPac
04/08/2005, 14:10
Wow, this is a tough one. Mister Miracle could be a solid host opening the show every time if another escape routine plus personality wise is funnier then Darkseid but..... I think Darkseid could ask better questions to the guests and would play a perfect Godfather for the skit. Also, it would never stop being funny when Darkseid gets funny at Desaad disinagrates him only to bring him back and force him to beg for mercy.

Plus if you don't vote for Darkseid he would kill you.

Having advertised for Viagra, Bob Dole is BEGGING for a "Mr. Miracle" gag. While Darkseid will make a better Godfather, Mr. Miracle can do the "Every time I think I'm out, they pull me back in!" line with conviction. That puts him one up before we get to fuzzy, endearing personality wars (which Scott will win handily, though the thought of the massive Darkseid tapping index cards on a desk is hilarious) and of course sex appeal (Big Barda > Desaad).

Mr. Miracle all the way.

1. Reed Richards (comedic sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Doctor Doom (comedic sidekick: a Doombot) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Captain America (comedic sidekick: Rick Jones) vs. the Red Skull (comedic sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: RED SKULL)
3. Superman (comedic sidekick: Jimmy Olsen) vs. Braniac (comedic sidekick: Koko the space monkey) (WINNER: BRANIAC)
4. Batman (comedic sidekick: Alfred) vs. Poison Ivy (comedic sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
5. Spider Man (comedic sidekick: J. Jonah Jameson) vs. Doctor Octopus (comedic sidekick: Sandman) (WINNER: SPIDER MAN)
6. Cyclops (comedic sidekick: Wolverine) vs. Mystique (comedic sidekick: Destiny) (WINNER: MYSTIQUE)
7. Mister Miracle (comedic sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Darkseid (comedic sidekick: Desaad) (WINNER: MISTER MIRACLE)
8. Blue Beetle (comedic sidekick: Booster Gold) vs. Conan the Barbarian (comedic sidekick: a camel)

Well, the LAST match-up of Round 1:

Blue Beetle vs. Conan the Barbarian:

Guests: Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscema, Dan Rather and musical guest Janet Jackson.
SKIT: Dealing with a slow line and a stupid clerk at the local convenience store.

Who would win?

SyxxPac
04/11/2005, 10:56
I'm saddened by the loss of Darkseid but I will strive through that defeat.

As for this match up, I don't think there is one and I'll go with Blue Beetle. Conan won't be able to read the cue cards and the live audience gets upset when the camel keeps spitting on them.

Q99
04/11/2005, 10:59
Blue Beetle and Booster Gold vs. the far less funny Conan with a crud sidekick?

Against light competition, Conan may be able to pull it out with "By the will of Crom! Who gave me a camel for a sidekick?", but Ted is a great conversationalist for the interviews and he has Booster for backup.

Team blue and gold rock the show and leave Conan in the dust. Heck, even with Crom as a comedic sidekick, Conan would lose.

Clix776
04/11/2005, 11:47
It's Blue and Gold. I'm fairly certain Conan was dumped here with sacrificial purpose - all the other matches are actual enemies. Why not Big Sur with Major Disaster as his comedic sidekick? Because this match was going to Blue and Gold all the way.

Besides, waiting in a long line and dealing with a doltish clerk - wasn't that an actual ISSUE of JLE?

Blue Beetle and Booster (comedic) Gold.

Have a Great Day,

Actually, when I made the original list, I never considered the possibility that the thread would be successful enough to make it to Match #8.

Besides, the Cimmerian was a man of "gigantic meloncholies and gigantic mirths," so I didn't think of him as an automatic loss. If I'd matched him against Cyclops, he might have stood a chance.

Okay, our regulars have voted and it's obvious that Blue & Gold will take this one. Conan returns to the City of Thieves to resume an occupation more suited to his skills. I have no idea what will happen to the poor camel.

ROUND 2 BEGINS:

1. Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. the Red Skull (sidekick: a rotting corpse)
2. Braniac (the evil one) (sidekick: Koko the Space Monkey vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn
3. Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Mystique (sidekick: Destiny)
4. Mister Miracle (sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 2, Match 1:

Reed Richards vs. Red Skull
Guests: Jason Alexander, Craig T. Nelson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and musical guest Paul McCartney.
SKIT: Figuring out what scientific equipment--destroyed during the last year in various battles--is tax deductable.

The Red Baron
04/11/2005, 13:32
I have to vote for red skull again, mostly its the skit which would be funny because it is a #### doing taxes. and having a rotting corpse hit on jennifer love hewit would be funny

I'm going to have to sleep on this one.

Q99
04/11/2005, 13:53
Hmm... I think Reed takes this, solely on the wit of Ben Grimm. Reed's brilliant mind should figure out Thing in a interview with Jason Alexander will get a lot of raitings, and Ben can 'accidentally' break the rotting corpse too.

Red Skull leaves in a huff.

SyxxPac
04/12/2005, 07:44
Based on skit on guests I'm going to vote for Red Skull.

Mar-vell
04/12/2005, 08:53
I think people are giving Red Skull and the corpse WAAAY to much credit.

Whatever humor could be derived from having a rotting corpse propped up at a keyboard during an interview (not much to begin with), will be lost as time wears on. You know, decomposition and all.

Plus, Red Skull = not funny. He isn't Dieter from Sprockets; he's a N-a-z-i tyrant.

Reed and Ben take this. Against Dieter and a rotting corpse, maybe not. But here, definitely. ;)

Kalel21
04/12/2005, 10:01
Okay, it's a 2-2 tie so far. Clix776, we need you to cast the deciding vote.

Clix776
04/12/2005, 10:52
I'm all in for Reed and Ben. I think they've got the better combo, the better experience for the skit, and the better interaction with the guests. Particularly when Craig T. Nelson first sits down and they make vague overtones about "The Incredibles" and "The Fantastic Four" and imply impending violence and then laugh it off, loosening things up.

Red Skull and the rotting corpse, on the other hand... I'm with Mar-vell. He's a n-azi tyrant. And isn't the opening guest another Jewish person? Or is that going to be a running gag on the Red Skullton Show - the first guest consistently is killed?

Great skit potential for both, though... I have a vision of Reed and Ben walking around a lab, Reed pointing out the destroyed things and naming them, Ben horribly mispronouncing the names and picking them up, crushing the entire massive mess into a tiny, multi-ton ball that he hands to Reed at the end of the sketch. Reed's arms promptly stretch to the ground with a bang, and he chases after Ben with his arms staying behind in frame, pinned under the garbage.

Red Skull, on the other hand, could have a similar sketch, but he would walk around handing the things to the rotting corpse, which would slowly vanish under a mounting pile of hi-tech whatnot.

This tournament is great.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Kalel21
04/12/2005, 11:29
Well, Reed inches out a victory. The Red Skull's show is sent off to Nuremberg.

Round 2 match-ups:

1. Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. the Red Skull (sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Braniac (the evil one) (sidekick: Koko the Space Monkey vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn
3. Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Mystique (sidekick: Destiny)
4. Mister Miracle (sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 2, Match 2:

Braniac vs. Poison Ivy

Guests: Jay Leno, Carrot Top, Drew Barrymore and musical guests Huey Lewis and the News
SKIT: A musical comedy version of a typical comic book fight scene.

Who wins this time?

The Red Baron
04/12/2005, 11:36
Brainac for four reasons
1. He has a monkey
2. He would Kill Jay Leno and Conan would finally get top bidding on late night
3. He would kill Carrot Top
4. Muscial Comedy with Brainac and Koko GOLD!

Clix776
04/12/2005, 11:52
I think that Harley and Ivy will take this one - the musical comedy sketch put them over the top.

Though a highlight of the Brainiac show could be KoKo defecating on Carrot Top's head, much like that San Diego Zoo - what was it? a marmot? - did to Johnny Carson, lo those many years ago.

I'd prefer Brainiac win, simply for a Battle of the Late Night Brains between him and Reed. But I think that Harley and Ivy will come out on top.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Q99
04/12/2005, 12:41
I think Brainiac was good enough last time to win from Smarts + monkey, but here he's facing a pair who really know what they're doing. Ivy is quite smart herself, and can do both serious and humerous in partnership with Harley. That versatility is enough to carry the day, combined with the fact that Ivy and Harley look like Ivy and Harley. They take it.

DeonBeast
04/12/2005, 13:18
Ivy and Harley have a great chemistry. Brainiac has a monkey.

And I could see a prop war between Harley and Carrot Top.

I vote Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.

Kalel21
04/12/2005, 14:52
3 to 1 for the girls so far. Will their lead stand up? I'll post the winner tomorrow.

By the way, if anyone has any skit ideas for future matches, please PM me with them. I can keep coming up with guests with little effort, but I never planned on the thread being successful enough to go to the end. Now, it looks like it will and I'm running a bit dry for good skits.

Try to keep any skit ideas fairly generic, rather than something that would specifically fit one of the remaining contestants. I want to keep the contests as fair as possible.

I'll properly credit who I got the skit idea from when I use them.

SyxxPac
04/12/2005, 15:12
Well I really want to vot fore Brainiac but I can't. Granted he would put on a good show DeonBeast made me imagine the prop war between Carrot Top and Harley and I laughed so I'll chose the girls

michiganj24
04/12/2005, 23:13
Oh this is the girls for sure. For all the reasns mentioned before and besides i already made it clear how i think they will do in a comedic fight scene.
Although i would like to see that from the other team just for the sheer badness of it. Imagine a robot with a monotone voice and an animal who cant even speak trying to sing. Im just picturing Al Gore and George Bush singing together

Prof. Aragorn
04/13/2005, 09:19
I can definately see Brainiac and Koko take this one.

Imagine Brainiac in a badly done Superman Costume trying to make musical tones as he fights Koko the Ninja Space monkey.

Everyone knows monkey rules, but Ninja Monkeys?

Vote: Brainiac and Koko

(By the by, which Brainiac is it? 13?)

Kalel21
04/13/2005, 10:02
The girls take this one 5 to 2. The DVD of Braniac's show becomes the lining for Koko's cage.

Round 2 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. the Red Skull (sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Braniac (the evil one) (sidekick: Koko the Space Monkey vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
3. Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Mystique (sidekick: Destiny)
4. Mister Miracle (sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 2, Match 3:
Spidey vs. Mystique

Guests: Joe Pesci, Lisa Lui, the inventor of Underoos, and muscial guest Willy Nelson.
Skit: Training a new super pet / attack beast (thanks to Clix776 for this skit idea)

Who would win? (I've a feeling most of you will consider this one a no-brainer.)

Prof. Aragorn
04/13/2005, 11:19
Spidey is going to take this. I can see Joe Pesci and Spidey doing a Goodfellas reenactment and Spidey plus two irate, hotheaded, psychopaths is comic gold.

Though I do see Mystique and Destiny doing a good Seeing Eye Monster training sketch.

With that skit alone, it will be close, but Spidey's one liners are too funny. I still love his Webs Away line from Spider-man Unlimited run.

Vote: Spider-man and J. Jonah Jameson.

Clix776
04/13/2005, 16:44
Why do I think that Willie Nelson and JJJ are going to hit it off, and Spider-Man's going to be sitting on the edge of things at the desk trying to get a word in edgewise? The inventor of underoos will go over great with Spider-Man, too, though I'm certain that Jonah will sit on the couch demanding he be flogged for encouraging children to emulate lawless vigilantes.

Mystique would do well with someone political and she hasn't pulled anybody like that yet, but... Joe Pesci has a lot of famous scenes, and she could play off of that well, transforming into one character Joe played against after another and trading lines.

I think Spider-Man will have the better sketch for this one - the thought of repeated attempts to train a dog to webswing is pretty funny.

Spider-Man and JJJ for the win. Looking forward to the next competition, Mr. Miracle and Big Barda vs. Blue and Gold in what promises to be a Giffen-DeMatteis Justice League comedic BRAWL.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Round 2 matchups:

1. Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. the Red Skull (sidekick: a rotting corpse) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
2. Braniac (the evil one) (sidekick: Koko the Space Monkey vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: POISON IVY)
3. Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Mystique (sidekick: Destiny) (WINNER: SPIDER MAN)
4. Mister Miracle (sidekick: Big Barda) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 2, Match 4:

Mister Miracle vs. Blue Beetle
Guests: Tom Hanks, Vin Diesel, Penelope Cruz and muscial guest Christina Aguilera
SKIT: There's squirrel in the attic of the secret headquarters.
(thanks to hair_erlis for this skit idea)

Who wins the last Round 2 match?

The Red Baron
04/14/2005, 11:49
Blue Beetle will win he is going to be unstoppable with the skit.

Prof. Aragorn
04/14/2005, 11:53
Lessee, Booster Gold hits on Penelope Cruz and Christina Aguilera while Blue Beetle chases a giant squirrel in the JLA headquarters.

Yeah, I'm going to go with Blue and Gold. They're just funnier. This is pretty close go.

Prof. Aragorn
04/14/2005, 12:29
Err, not go, though.

Clix776
04/14/2005, 16:28
I do not think that this is a guest list that will give Mr. Miracle a victory. I think that such a guest list exists, though I'm not sure what it is.

Barda will be great with Vin Diesel, I think. Gold will have a field day with Penelope Cruz and then Christina Aguilera. I think that Vin and Hanks both have strong enough personalities that they could sit convincingly with Blue and Gold and not get overpowered.

The sketch will be funnier with Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, but the squirrel will have a better origin story on Mr. Miracle's show.

Blue and Gold for the win. BWAHAHAHAHA!

Next round is going to be double tough: Blue Beetle and Booster Gold vs. Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson. Who's the winner? The viewers!

Blue and Gold win again. Mr. Miracle's show is regulated to a local New Genesis cable outlet.

On to Round 3:

Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn)
Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 3, Match 1:

Reed vs. Ivy
Guests: Lawrence Fishburne, Bruce Campbell, Rebecca Romija-Stamos and musical guest Bonnie Riatt.
Skit: A "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" skit where the host's "daughter" (a guest in drag) introduces the host's archenemy as her new fiancee. (thanks to hair_eris for the skit idea)

Who wins this time? I know most of you will blow out your brains next match trying to decide between Spidey and Beetle, so choose wisely now while your sanity is intact.

Clix776
04/15/2005, 11:12
I think this guest line-up really lends itself to a Reed/Ben victory. I think it's one of the few that would, but they got a lot of the good pulls, here. Lawrence Fishburne, Bruce Campbell and Rebecca Romjin (I think the "-Stamos" is -history) all will play nicely with their brand of cross-banter. I can see Harley and Ivy doing very well with Bruce Campbell, but less so with the other two. And I know very little about Bonnie Raitt besides "She's a country singer."

And, while I think Bruce Campbell would play to being in drag better, I REALLY hope both pairs pick Lawrence Fishburne to play the "daughter".

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Round 3 matchups:

Reed Richards (sidekick: Ben Grimm) vs. Poison Ivy (sidekick: Harley Quinn) (WINNER: REED RICHARDS)
Spider Man (sidekick: J. Jonah Jamison) vs. Blue Beetle (sidekick: Booster Gold)

Round 3, Match 2--the match that will drive you all insane trying to decide upon:

Spider Man vs Blue Beetle
Guests: John Rhys Davies, Patrick Stewart, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and musical guest Paul McCartney.
SKIT: Switching service providers on your signal device. (thanks to Clix776 for the skit idea.)

Clix776
04/18/2005, 13:25
Okay... piece by piece... From the feel that I've gotten from him over the course of approximately 12 billion hours of Lord of the Rings Special Edition Appendices, I think that Spider-Man will have an edge in his banter with John Rhys Davies. Peter's brand of wit will work just a bit better than Blue Beetle and Booster's. I think similar things about the classical acting of Patrick Stewart. The player inside of John Michael Carter will do very well sitting next to Catherine Zeta-Jones and hit that guest into Blue and Gold's court. Musical guest Paul McCartney... this one was tough, and then the image of "The Beefeater" popped into my head, and that clinched it. Once Ted tells that story, they'll have a great time with Paul, edging out Spider-Man (who, at one point, was a teenager when the Beatles were popular).

So, the sketch... this sort of thing is a frustration that Peter is VERY familiar with, fighting beauracracy and dealing with inane life hassles after a long day of heroing. Beetle and Booster, though, could do a great sketch AS the service providers for Superhero Signal Devices, as it sounds like their sort of get rich quick scheme. In my head, that sketch looks better.

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold to advance.

Have a Great Day,
Gary E. Poisson

Spidey's Sub
04/18/2005, 15:14
I imagaine the skit w/ Spidey hanging upside down, wind in the ear, trying to get reception. Or he could get mad taliking to someone about his service, webbing the phone to the side of the building to fight a perp, and returning an hour later to find his phone smashed on the ground below.

Remember, Catherine likes older men so JJJ has the advantage over the player in BG.

I think my vote will have to be for Spidey.

LeaLu
04/18/2005, 15:40
I just caught this thread for the first time- can't believe I've missed it for so long!
Anyway, I think that John Rhys-Davies is a talented enough comedic actor to play the straight man to Booster and Beetle's wackiness, ditto with Patrick Stewart (All Things Scottish, anyone?). Booster's thinly veiled hitting on Catherine Zeta-Jones is sure to be good, since I'm betting she can give as well as she gets. The skit is a wildcard, but I think things are too strong in favor of the Blue & Gold to not give them this one.

Q99
04/18/2005, 19:54
Hmm... I think Beetle's smart enough to provide some good conversation, and Booster's been a bit of a celeb himself, so I think they can do well with JRD, and even PS.

Spidey can start out pretty good with CZJ, but having a wife holds him back, and Beetle reigning Booster in should be entertaining.

I vote Booster and Beetle too, although it's a good fight.

Well, there are some rather dry guests, so Mr. Fantastic can probably do better than one would think.

Booster pretends to hit on Reed's wife during the whole thing (hey, she's being invisible!) and Beetle makes great interviews. Plus it's a duo skit, Reed and Ben can't beat team blue & gold.

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold to win it all.

Though if they try swapping gags with Mr. Rickles, they may get more than they bargained for. That guy went head to head with Waldorf and Stadler - at the same time!

The super car, though... everybody thinks Blue and Gold for this one, but the Thing around some new Reed device has been played for humor for years. I do think that Reed and Ben will have the better sketch on this one than Blue Beetle and Booster the Boy Wonder.

As an aside, what name did Blue Beetle assign Booster as his sidekick when they were going around on that Justice League membership drive and getting nowhere?

So, tune in this fall for the new talk-show sensation THE BLUE AND GOLD HOUR---weekday nights at 11:30 on SBN (The Super Broadcast Network)
