(First off, welcome to the new TV and Movie Forum!)
Sin City comes out this Friday, and is getting tons of hype.
Roll with the punches and hype away...it's the Sin City thread...
What I want to know is how in the world they got so many gorgeous young actresses to be in a comic book movie?
Brittany Murphy (looks even better with her hair brown now)
Jessica Alba
Rosario Dawson
Jamie King
Carla Gugino

Here Here, i saw her on Dave last night and i could not believe it was the same girl.
blond Brittany = not on my radar
Brunette Brittany = How you Doin' :-)
Yeah, she looked VERY hot on Letterman last night.
The fact that she probably can't add but would have a good time trying helps, too.

Hey, I added a poll to this thread.
If you've seen the movie, give it your rating. :)

You know I've never read a single issue of Sin City, so I know not what I'm getting into, I know that there will be hot chicks, and Bruce Willis, plus I did Rodriguez and Taritino as Directors and Frank Miller has yet to let me down.
I'm debating about taking my kids to see it [11 &14]

My wife actually requested I take the afternoon off to catch the first showing tomorrow!
Guess that's the benefit of having a wife who owns a comic shop. :cheeky:

I have a tendency to be a little over protective but I would say definitely not. I think some of the violence and nudity is toned down from the comics (no frontal male nudity and Alba decided not to get naked) but from what I understand, it's still pretty intense. It looks like a lot of the Kevin/Marv stuff (which I'll leave vague for those who haven't read the books) is in there and it's rather violent.
If anything, I would suggest seeing it yourself first and then deciding.
There are also a few creepy characters that may be a little scary for the very young.

That's what I am gonna do, I'll go seeit first an if it's not sooooo bad I'll let them see it.... Truth be told I can't see it being much worse than Kill Bill one [there were a couple of scenes in that I wish they had not seen] :disappoin

Some of the gossip I have heard places it close to Kill Bill Vol. 1. But some of the Sin City violence could be a little less over the top yet possibly more "intense" in some way. Less blood gushing when limbs get cut off but the way they get cut off might not be so clean.
Superherohype does list nudity in it. I think Clive Owen might show off his bum or something. And maybe a woman or two might be topless. Still a lot less than the comic where many of the characters (men and women) let it all hang out. ;)
just went to see it today and i must say...WOW!!! i don't go to the movies too much, i missed elektra, but i just saw a commercial today that it is coming out on dvd on tuesday so no worry. to put it in a better perspective, the last movie i seen in the theatre was the passion of the christ, the first time around. as for sin city, i knew i couldn't miss that. it is very violent so i would not reccomend bringing small children to see it, but like what canada maestro said it is up to you as the adult to make that decision. all in all go see it if you have some free time it is well worth it. i'm not writing any spoilers but i will say mickey rourkes performance as marv is amazing. and jessica alba...c'mon!!!
cheers

Intro - Excellent setup
That Yellow Bastard - The cadence of Bruce Willis & Michael Madsen is too jarring.
The Hard Goodbye - The true meat of the movie, reinforces the noir feel.
The Big Fat Kill - More about old town and the entire city.
That Yellow Bastard - Worst part of the movie, the way it enfolds does not match the first 2/3rds of the movie. Bruce Willis is trying too hard.
End scene - Wraps up the film & still leaves it open.
IMHO, without That Yellow Bastard, Sin City is a 5 star film. With it, it's 4 star.

I never read the Sin City comics but I enjoyed Frank Miller's other work.
I would NOT recommend taking middle school or younger children to see this film. There is too much violence and sexual content. I would also not recommend taking a date to this movie as the overt sex and number of topless women could be offensive.
The movie itself was great. I agree that Bruce Willis and Michael Madsen seemed a bit wooden. I loved Mickey Rourke as Marv and Elijah Wood as Kevin.
The cinematography was breathtaking. The selected use of color and the staging of the shots looked like something straight out of a comic book. In #### Tracy that was a bad thing. In this case, it was a good thing.
The girls *scratch that* WOMEN in the movie are super hot. They are sexy delicious and their outfits are out of this world hot. I don't think there was a woman in the film who did not wear a thong.
The violence was on a Tarantino level. There are some VERY bad guys in this movie.
For males 18 and older (with a high tolerance for violence) I would strongly recommend this. Two thumbs up! :)

After finally seeing it, I would have to say that I would not bring a 14 year old to see it. Far too much violence not to mention the nudity and sexual content.
Personally, I really really enjoyed it. There were a few scenes I felt were forced by the actors but the visuals and exciting energy behind it make up for it. The stand outs for me would be Mickey Rourke as Marv and Benecio del Toro as Jack.
I had my doubts about Elijah but he worked for me as well.
But in the end, I know this kind of movie isn't for everyone so take my opinion as just that, my opinion. :)
This movie proves that the best comic book movies are not the big sci-fi superhero ones, but the ones that are self contained, original, and doesn't have spandex. With this, you can even use the original comics as storyboards for the movie. Just imagine a 100 Bullets movie, or a Y-The Last Man movie! And I will second that Marv, Kevin, hell, everyone put on tremendous performances. Think there'll be a sequal?
BTW, which scene did Tarantino direct? Was it the one with Clive talking to the dead Jack in the car?

Yes, it was that scene.
PaladinKWA, do you mean his mental condition? I just assumed it was a combination of being mildly developmentally challenged and taking a few too many shots to the head during his life. I'm thinking it's the second option that keeps making things worse for him.

Having read the books, I wonder why they went with The Big Fat Kill instead of A Dame To Kill For, because Dame and The Hard Goodbye cross over. And Mickey Rourke coud have hit more people. Apart from that, I've already seen it twice. Great flick.

Went and saw the movie last night. I thought it was very well done and very true to the original stories.
I also agree that the yellow man story seemed to slow down the show a bit.
I wish I could find a town where the women dressed the same way as in the show.
A great show for adults and older teenagers but my kids are 10 and 14 and they are not going to see it. At least until it comes out on video and they sleep over at a freinds house.

Good luck with that, cause real street walkers don't look like that. I'm a warrant clerk, and I've worked the jail a few times. Real street hookers are about as skanky looking as they come. I've never seen one come through there that was even remotely attractive.
Just saw the movie. It was great! Lots of graphic violence in it though. Definetly not for young kids.

Yeah, it's a horrible date movie.
I'd never read Sin City (and was only familar with Miller's Dark Knight Returns) so I didn't know what to really expect. I knew it would be dark, but I didn't realize it would be this nasty and brutal. I think they honestly got away with a lot because of the black-and-white look. I think this was a lot more brutal than Kill Bill. I've watched both volumns of Kill Bill with my girlfriend too and it wasn't a big deal for either of us. This was. Simply put, this was the most brutal film I've ever seen, start to finish... and I've watched and loved horror/action/zombie/slasher/Tarantino/whatever films for years.
Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a great film, a cinematic achievement... but it's NOT for the faint of heart. I wouldn't take any "young kids" to see it without screening it first.

The best film i've seen since Kill Bill, and may I say that Alexis looked AMAZING in her tight, black leather!!!!!! IMHO, I felt that every ounce of violence and nudity was justified. It either added to the development of the character, or established the setting and the mood of the scene. After seeing the movie I'm going to try and order as much of the series as I can. Long live the Heat Packin' #####s!

Mickey Rourke did an excellent job bringing Marv to life (a feat I thought might be difficult). He seemed to have a Wolverine like healing factor though, which seemed a bit out of place for a non-superhero movie.
The violence seemed more blurry because of the lack of realism. Marv getting hit by the car a few times and getting back up reminded me that I wasn't watching a Pulp film like Pulp Fiction, but more like a superhero flick without superheroes.
Lot's of Cop killing and nudity though.

In my few years of living, I have seen the pur violence of the Kill Bill movies, I have seen the nudity of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle and I have seen a side of human cruelty in the book "Night" by Eli Wielsel. And yet, none of it prepared me for Sin City. I loved the movie but my god was it dark.
As for the bringing a kid thing, I can't believe it wasn't X-rated. I may be in high school, but someone else probably wouldn't be able to take it.

In the words of #### Vitale, "It was toatlly awesome, baby!" This is the first time in years that Mickey Rourke didn't stink up a movie simply by being in it. In fact, he rocked the shack! I think everyone's previous comments apply as far as this being a strictly adult movie; the only thing that kept it from being NC-17 was the black-and-white. Comics, yes; superheroes, no...

I thought this was pretty mediocre all around. In the end, it was probably a case of the hype being too much for it to live up to.
The Marv/Dwight stories were great, but the Hartigan stuff dragged.
Four stars, but I went in expecting Five and a half. :ermm:
I'm just hoping that if this does well, and Batman does well, they will make the Dark Knight Returns. That would be really cool. But I do agree that it was a little too intense, even for the other high schoolers I went to see it with.

I wanted to leave halfway through the movie.
The action was boring, the dialogue was terrible, two of the three leads were uninspired, and the black and white didn't look as awesome as it did in the trailers.
The opening scene was pretty cool. It was fairly short, but was a good opener.
Then it went downhill.
The rest of the movie is filled with extranious exposition that served little to no point. Never have I wanted anyone to shut up so badly. Not to mention three different lead characters.
Marv was alright. Easily the best lead, but if I had to hear him say Goldie one more time I'd feel like crying. Instead of splashing some blood on his face, I would have liked to have seen him beat down people.
Clive Owen's character was boring. He didn't express an emotion in the entire time he was on screen. The scene with Miho could have been better, the alleyway gunfight could have been shown.
Willis phoned in his performance, Alba can't act anyway, so who cares. He talked to himself alot, great, hadn't seen that for the past hour and a half.
To be fair I liked Kevin. I thought Elijah Woods was really, really creepy and he did his part well. Rory Gilmore was good as well, but she was just Rory Gilmore in tight leather.
I understand that I'm probably the only person around who downright was bored with the movie. But, I just ask that other people be as understanding of my opinion.
And yes, I did give it one star.
Went to go see it with my wife on saturday, we both loved it, but aftwards my wife said:
"I'll never be albe to watch lord of the rings the same way again." Even without saying a word, Elijah Wood's character was just #### creepy.
Of the three main stories, we both liked Marv's the best.. are there additional stories with him in the books?
***** for me. I thought the movie was kick butt. Jessica Alba is so fine its not fair.
Marv was my favorite storyline in the movie.

I've only read the first 5 TPBs so far but Marv is in the second one ("A Dame to Kill For"). It's mostly about Dwight and actually explains a few things from the movie (the history between Dwight and Manute, Manute's eye, Shellie's comment about Dwight's "new face", etc) but Marv does play a role in at least the first part of it.
Other than that, I'm not sure if any other stories of Marv have appeared.

AWESOME FILM!
Best Neo-Noir film in years.
Best translation of a comic to film ever.
This is the first movie I have ever gone twice to the theater to see.
My only complaint is that it was only two hours long. Looking forward to the sequel.
It is one of the most violent movie I have ever seen. Should be NC-17. Any parent who thinks he should let their kids see it is a completely irresponsible MORON!
And Marv's parole officer was the HOTTEST woman in the picture. And to think that Carla Gugino was starting to take "Mom" roles in other films. What a waste.

Absolutely!!! This is the best translation of comics to film ever or really comics to any medium whatsoever. I love all the Sin City works, having read and re-read them many times, and I went into this movie with high hopes practically greater than my anticipation for Epsiode 3 and I wasn't dissapointed. I will say that I had a feeling Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba would be the weak links in the film and they were, but it was only a little bit and it didn't tarnish the overall experience. The rest of the cast was incredible and they became their comic counterparts like we have never seen before.(not to diminish the great performances of Christopher Reeve or Hugh Jackman)
I have seen this 3 times since the weekend, with my wife, my mom, my buddies. The wife liked it but was a little confused(she thought that some of the characters looked too similar). My mom loved it. (I had her read the TPB's before I took her) My buddies all thought it was amazing and practically flawless. I actually took some of the TPB's with me when I went with my pals just to flip pages along with the movie's progression. It's like having the screenplay and storyboard right in your hand. It was so perfect. This was the first movie that I wish had (nod to Spaceballs) instant DVDs on sale out in the lobby.
I hope that this movie makes a lot of money to justify its production and to validate the talented work of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez.
Go see this movie. And then go see it again.

Oh, and Carla Gugino was smokin hot! Alba could keep her clothes on for all I cared.

It was a great translation of a comic into another medium, but I would only give it the #2 spot. The #1 translation of a comic into another medium would have to be Sam Keith's The Maxx. It's a very close second though. Since the movie version of The Maxx was animated, it was better able to mimic the look and feel of the comic. Heck, some of the images from the comic were put straight into the animated version without alteration. The only parts that were changed from the comic book were the issues where guest appearances by Savage Dragon and Pitt occured. Even then, little was changed.

I havn't read the comic, but from what I've browsed in the shops it seems like an incredibly faithful adaptiation.
Anyway, the film was bad. Violent, but bad. I'd only recommend going to see it if you like over the top violence and sex. The movie was plot driven (the violence making it a bit tedious at times). There was no discernable theme and the characters were flat (many repeating the same lines of dialogue). The acting wasn't spectacular and the hints of color, while breaking up the monotony of the black and white, served little to no thematic purpose.
The cinematography mimicked a comic book respectably, which was the only point of interest I could find in this predictable and inane film
One star.

I agree w/ Munster4Life, a bit too much for violence for my tastes, but besides that and a few scenes, i'd give it 4 stars. I havent read the sin city TPB, but from what I saw, it looked very accurate, I do like the begining and end scenes, seemed very appropriate :).

To follow up, I just picked up the Booze, Broads and Bullets TPB (Second Edition just came out). It's a collection of short stories and a few of them do feature Marv. Some aren't bad but I wouldn't put them up there with the original story.
