Welcome aboard....always nice to have more people in the group, especially a controller.

I have the prerequisites for the atlas medallion and I could swear I have hit every plaque, but no badge. Do I need to get the plaques in order?

The Exploration plaques can be hit in any order. Check Paragonwiki or any of the badgehunter sites to make sure of your badges. IIRC the Atlas Medallian Accolade also requires some "defeat" badges and some mission-specific badges.

What are the specifics on the Virtue group(s): names, who to contact, etc? I play pretty much exclusively on Virtue (and have since the beginning). I'm not dead-set against playing on another server, but everyone else that I play with regularly plays on Virtue, so I'd rather stick there. Plus, I have about 6 or 7 characters on Virtue already of various levels. I'd love to run around with some fellow Realmsers! :) I'm betting I could bring one or two people along with me, too.

Once again thank you for your help It seems that the Pupil and Intellect badge are very close together in Kings Row. I now have the Atlas :d-normal:

No problem. I HATE the KR exploration badges...they seem to be in the weirdest places relative to the map. The only other place that gives me such grief is IIRC the "Burning the Midnight Oil" exploration badge in Crey's Folly.

I played this game for awhile unitl I learned of the HORRIBLE "pay-it-back" experience system. Man, I went on mission once, some guys quit, we lost, and I got a ton of negative experience to pay back. That made me quit right there. I'm not going to pay a monthly fee for something that absurd. I liked everything else about the game, even the sidekick team-up. That was cool. But the negative experience system ruined it for me. Completely.

I consider that one of the good things. Half your exp goes to debt half goes to gaining exp.

I consider that one of the good things. Half your exp goes to debt half goes to gaining exp.

Not to mention that you don't loose your "belongings", and your debt burden is seriously diminished if you are defeated within a door mission. Get defeated in PvP and you get zero debt!

You also cannot accrue debt until your character reaches level 10, there is a trivial recovery system (go to the hospital! or your SG base!), and if you EX to a lower level, 100% of your XP goes to debt reduction.

All-in-all, CoX has one of the least painful MMORPG "death" systems.

11/04/2007, 16:03
No way, at the time, I didn't have enough patience to or time to play the game with that. I was full time Military in 05', and didn't have much time to play video games. Let alone one that makes you work twice as hard to level. It was too annoying to me and frustrating.

And Tidge, you're wrong. You want a painless death xp scenario? Try Guild Wars... also a product of NC Soft..

Anyhoo, I'm thinking about starting from square one with my MA scrapper once I get upgraded. I was gonna go Regen as a secondary, but the upcoming Willpower is also tempting (and more thematic since he's essentially a film noir detective)

Decisions, decisions.

Obviously I don't know anything about the Willpower set, but Regen is truly frightening. Integration (a toggle that IIRC you can get aound 10th level or so) makes you immune to status effects such as holds, sleeps, immbolize, etc. It's crazy, but regen scrappers can (still) tank for teams better than almost all tanks.

Yeah, I'm definitely curious about the new sets. Probably take a look at them soon.

Willpower's the one I really want to try out. That and custom weapons. Can't wait for Eva to customize her bow.

Is the former a direct cause of the latter? :surprised

tidge

I've definitely considered dropping CoX from time to time because of server disconnects/etc. I'm playing on a low-end (subterranian!) system, but I still think that the game requires too much server/client handshaking, and drops connection far too easily.

I've also been a long-time critic of the in game graphics drawing far too many surfaces...this is an unecessary taxation on all systems. It would be nice if the dev team would go through the maps (especially the city maps on the villain side) and "caulk" away all those below-ground surfaces.

Manchine

No I have just done everything. Now if they added level 50+ content then I would reconsider it. They have already stated they weren't gonna raise the level cap.

The main thing is I have done pretty much everything in CoH/V. Adding a new powerset is really nice but there is no new gameplay. I was almost feeling this way before the Invasion but that was actually done well and kept me entertained enough to keep playing.

I think of the Fitness tree (Run/Jump/End FTW!) more as a recommended nutrition.

I think I only have a handful of characters that didn't *need* it:

1) An Illusion/Kinetics Controller (pets, mind control and kinetics reduced my need to burn END)

2) Regen Scrappers (for what should be obvious reasons)

3) Kheldians (if I stay in non-human form, and slot those forms for recovery)

I tried many builds without it, but anything that runs toggles really needs that extra recovery.

Ah that's right! I've kept that set off of my "Traps" MasterMind, although I typically keep that guy close to the action, so I can occasionally get into trouble with him when that precious blue line is too low to respawn a minion (or three).

Anybody savy on building bases because I'm having a pretty rough time of it. I thought I read somewhere that you could build a "starter" base around 600k prestige. Any help would be appreciated.

I was the primary architect for our SG base in CoV...but my SG dried up (our leader dropped the game without promoting anyone!) so some of my info may be out of date.

First piece of advice: Stay with the default size for the base; you don't want to run into the base upkeep fees with larger ones.

Second piece of advice: look on the list to see control/energy costs, and buy the appropriate amount of each for what you plan to get.

My personal opinion on what is important:

1) Ressurection bay. A quick death is sometimes the fastest way to get back to the base, especially from PvP zones (just get killed by a player or a drone)

2) I prefer to have inspiration collectors, especially if you have high-level players that can dump extras in it. You can of course also work toward the auto-medic badge to be able to buy them.

3) Teleporters: the more the better. Until you can afford to have all of them, discuss with your SG which ones are best. Now that the train lines go more places, I prefer Perez Park and Peregrine Island...plus one of the transit zones like Skyway or Steel Canyon to start.

Ironically the Hollows is a place that has a lot of missions in many arcs, so despite the arcs their being self-contained, it is also a useful choice.

You may be able to get buy with the crafting stations as needed, until you are up and running.

Manchine

Teleporters

Kings Row Ports you very close to the green line. Steel Canyon ports you very close to Yellow Line.

We have two teleport pads with 4 destinations and a basic med bay (25% heals on rez). We need to have defenders out there healing in order to improve the Med bay. The base also has a salvage rack and a tech and mystic worktable, if anyone wants to make some items to add to the base!

Also any ideas for improving the base are welcome!

On the fitness question, allow me to add another build that works just fine without it:

Electrical brutes! I've specced myself to make great use of Elec/Elec's endurance draining capacity, and not only do I not have stamina (I started this at level 41ish, so it may not work earlier on) I never, ever run out of endurance as long as I'm paying attention. I'm even Malta Sapper proof. I suspect electrical blasters could pull the same trick if they were interested in doing so.

On the fitness question, allow me to add another build that works just fine without it:

It has been a long time since I played a low-level defender, but I restarted my "Bird Boy" (Bubble/Sonic) who was sitting at level 11...and playing on several 8-player teams in the Hollows I never had ANY end problems (courtesy of the the Defender auto-power).

I was actually quite surprised!

I was also having some fun with my slightly respeced lvl 50 Inv/NRG tank doing the time travel missions (at level 24)...He was actually able to solo some Elite Bosses (on the easy level), but that was something I hadn't been able to do with this toon since Issue 1 or 2...the Prestige attacks (coupled with Endurance) really made this build work (like it used to back in the pre-ED days).

I remember "soloing" the first (Positron) TF way back when...but I think they've actually made the TFs impossible to solo now. It's too bad IMO...with Veteran Rewards and things like Shivan Pets it should be possible for an Exemplared hero to actually solo a few of the TFs.

We had about 8 guys on that Ancient Rome TF. You have to be level 35 (either hero or villain) to get into the zone.

Positron needs only three(?) to start, and since you can join before level 14 (when most toons get travel powers) and you end up travelling between many zones many players drop. The last time I did it I remember Skyway, Steel Canyon (to report back), Atlas Park and Perez Park...that is a lot of travel for an under 14!

I actually soloed it back in very beginning with my Inv/Eng tank: Our group was tired of play (after about 8 hours of sprinting around) and called it a night. I logged back in an finished it myself as there was no Arch Villain at the end.

In the meantime I've soloed it with both a PB and WS (who get travel powers much earlier!) by just getting some help to "activate" the TF.

I think there is something in the code now that requires you to have a minimum number of players to complete a TF?

Manchine
06/04/2008, 07:48
I have soloed it also. With my Scrapper SuperReflexes/Martial Arts. Everyone just kept dropping until I was the only one left. The first 2 mishs are the hardest after that it becomes very easy. :)

Yep, you'd still count as Premium Player alright. The Archetypes you are missing are the Epic Archetypes (these can be purchased seperately) for both heroes and villains: The Peacebringer, The Warshade, Soldier of Arachnos and Widow.

As for the learning curve, it's not that steep really, considering that you don't *need* any of IO's to play the game, though you might find the end-game Incarnate stuff somewhat challenging.

And of course, there'll always be plenty of people more than willing to help, yours truly included (at least if you're on the Virtue server) ;)

I went back to playing just before this. Because I was paying customer I got 1600 paragon points to do what I want with. (You get 400 a month if you pay to play).

One big thing you have to remember. On my chart look at character slots only 2 of your characters will be active unless you put get unlocks for it.

Also you will Mastermind Archtype is not unlocked and Controller is not unlocked. I beleive if you have made the characters they will be available for you to play but you can't make any more.

Two slots would be plenty for me. Back before the wife and kid, I only had two toons that I played with any regularity, and I've got *way* less time these days. My primary CoV character was a Merc MM, though, so it'd be nice to think that I could get him back.

Also it looks like it hasn't gone free to play yet, sorry. I just tried getting my wife on and they have only let us paying customers get a headstart. So I am expecting, if everything turns out right, friday for the free to play. They won't give us an exact date since they are still working out some of the bugs.
The "Head Start" seems to last two weeks, based on the duration of the Paragon Market sales. So I'd wager full access around 27 September.

I'm already paid up through February, so I'll enjoy the VIP stuff while I can and make a decision next year. Funny enough, what I'm looking forward to most are the "Signature Story Arcs."

I also love all the changes they made to the Character Creation system, making the process very friendly to new players while remaining simple for veterans. That and the staged download system indicate they put a lot of thought into drawing new players in.

I have only done the level 1 through 9 and I love it. I also got to do the sewar trial which was a blast. We didn't have any melee guys and still only had 3 deaths total.

Two weeks ok didn't expect that.

I had a blast with CoX for years...but I finally gave up my account about 3 years ago. I didn't pick up any MMORPG habits in the meantime, but even so it would be hard for me to go back, mostly because I can't see playing without tells and I'd be reluctant to pay again.

I do recommend new folks give it a try, as it was a friendly game

One of the things I am trying to do is get people on Xfire so you can talk easier to people.

Why did they lock the Masterminds and Controllers?

Well, the obvious answer would be "to tempt people into paying for a VIP account" ;)

Another answer could be that they're arguable the most "complex" non-epic archetypes so if you want to limit the selection it makes sense to cut them.

Well, they're uglier and *louder* than the other minions. Also, some of their pets have buff powers of their own, which is pretty nifty and they do a lot of different elemental damage.

The flaming lash you get as your own weapon looks pretty cool too :)

My hard drive died in December. I lost CoV, Champions, DCU...and World of Warcraft. I got the one I paid for up and running first about three weeks ago when I got the new Hard Drive. Yeah, yeah, backup data...I know. Still, I've switched from Windows to Ubuntu so these things take time.

Wow. This game is still cool.

I'm impressed by the differences I've seen thus far...

- Down Below lowbie Task force. Much funner than the old sewer runs.
- Galaxy City is gone!!
- Longbow has taken over Mercy Island!!
- Circle of Thorns guys have new costumes.
- New costume packs available to buy, including Circle of Thorns, Carnival of Light, steampunk pack, and an animal pack.
- All power sets are available for heroes and villains instead of the strict division that existed before.
- I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's what immediately stood out to me.

So I reactivated my account last night (downgrading from paid to free, after something like four years away), and what's my first mission? Circle, of course, on one of those maps where you're hunting for the last mob. Golly, I missed those. I later did some missions with my cousin, who's been on this whole time, and he saw me teleporting, a skill that he described as "cute." It seems that certain travel powers are no longer in vogue.

It turns all your other powers off when you use it so I really don't see people using it too much. Probably everyone's still going to be sticking with Ninja Run or Beast Run for early levels.

It's crazy fast, but it turns off *all* your toggles. So hope you don't mind waiting for every power you've got to recharge.

Wolf travel power? How does it compare to the actual Super Speed travel power?

hail_eris
01/30/2012, 13:55
Based on what I've seen on the boards, it's slower - primarily because you can't slot it to improve it. And Super Speed allows you to keep your toggles up.

Okay, longtime players, I need a quick and dirty rundown - my two primary characters are a Mercs/Traps MM and a BS/Regen Scrapper. What, if any, significant nerfs to these power sets have been implemented over the past couple years? I'd like to have some idea of what I'm in for when I respec.

If you were taking advantage of Poison Trap with a number of damage procs to shred everything, be warned that the way procs work has been changed* in a way that limits the power's damage output. It's still good but no longer godly.

As for BS/Regen, I don't think any anything has happened to either of those powersets one way or another recently. Regen isn't anywhere near as ridiculously powerful as it used to be but those changes happened more than just a couple years ago so you should be at about the same level of power.

You may be pleased to learn that your Medic will no longer be constantly rushing into combat to ineffectually melee enemies and will actually heal your troops now.

*I don't actually know the details, sorry.

hail_eris
01/30/2012, 18:00
Yeah, I saw something about the poison trap nerf (guess I never knew what an awesome power it was). And the massive Regen nerf came at the same time as the cap on the number of identical enhancements that could be slotted in a given power, so I got to take all of my lumps at once on that one. Good to hear about the buff to the medic, though. Mercs have always been the lowest on the MM power totem pole (I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that 'bots have surrendered the top spot), so any tweaks that make them more effective are certainly welcome. Now if they could only get the spec ops guys to be worth a darn.

Sigdr
01/30/2012, 18:21
Unfortunately Mercs are still tied for worst. I have a mercs/dark mm in the mid thirties and I do enjoy playing her from time to time, but she gets outperformed by bots, thugs and demons with ease.

By the way, if you like scrappers, you may want to check out Street Justice or Titan Weapons. They both involve a combo mechanic that, while rudimentary, I find significantly more engaging than other scrapper sets.

Melkhor
01/30/2012, 18:38
And Street Justice has the added bonus of having some wonderfully visceral animations :)

It also fulfils a beautiful and much needed niche between Super-strength and Martial Arts for physically based characters who aren't necessarily Bruce Lee or the Hulk

Melkhor
01/30/2012, 18:43
Wolf travel power? How does it compare to the actual Super Speed travel power?

Technically, it's "Coyote Travel" not wolf. And it's basically Ninja Run with a *very* different animation and the added disadvantage of having all your powers turned off.

It's a cute option for a shape-shifting character if you want to emphasise that point of your powers though and of course it offers a ton of new Roleplaying possibilities too. I haven't picked it up myself though, mainly because I don't actually have a *single* shape-shifting character among my ton of alts :)

Oh, and regarding Teleportation being "cute" the new "Long Range Teleport" power is actually very handy, but I strictly base all my power choices for my characters on what makes sense within the confines of the concept so I'm not really one to ask about efficiency :)

I do that, too! People always used to give me grief because several of my toons didn't have travel powers. I couldn't bring myself to give flight or super-leap to characters who, in my mind, would have no business doing either of those things.

This is one of those areas where Champions Online is the clear winner. In addition to the movement powers that CoH has, it also has hover-discs, acrobatics, swinging, tunnelling, and jet boots, each with their own distinctive movement schticks.

That, of course, hasn't stopped me from coming back to City of Heroes, though. This is still a cool game.

Well, you can have Jet-boots in CoX as well ;)

Just take the flight power as usual, make (or buy) a set of Rocket Boots (or Winged Boots or Pneumatic Boots depending on what concept you're going for), head to the tailor/arbiter/trainer/Pocket D and put them on and voila, you now have justifiable flight on a non-powered character ;)

So I started playing a few months ago, and to my surprise City of Heroes runs on my 4+-year-old laptop (on the second lowest quality setting). Anyway, I got pretty well hooked to the point where I'm on my third month of VIP status with no end in sight, and in my craziness have, of course, started modding my own characters into HeroClix.

So I guess my question is, any Realmers have an active account on Victory server? That's where all the characters I play are. I also have a few that I basically don't play on Liberty.

I ventured into Virtue for that reason, but I've never really been satisfied with the kind of RP I found there. Now I get my CoH RP fix with the rpg.net group and they run RP SGs on Freedom and Liberty. My poor Virtue characters are so neglected.

Considering how I really don't play all that much, though, it would probably be more accurate to say 95% of my characters are neglected.
