City of Heroes is one of the hottest MMORPG's of all time...and it has already crossed over with 'Clix. Here's a thread for HCRealms members to chat about the game, discuss servers, characters, strategy, all of the fun stuff.

So, I just started playing last night...I have the Onyx Obelisk defending Paragon City on the Freedom server...and boy do I have some questions.

First off, how do I hook Enhancements to my Powers?

St-Dumas
03/30/2005, 16:41
Once you have an enhancement, open the enhancements menu. Click and hold the enhancement, and the powers that it can be used on will light up. Drag the enhancement over and put it on the enhancement slot you want to use it on.

Hello, I have characters on multiple servers, most notably Protector and Liberty.

St-Dumas, what's your character's name on Liberty? I think I've played with you a few times before.

Magnus Star - Level 50 Inv/SS Tanker

Currently without a supergroup on Liberty.

St-Dumas
04/01/2005, 16:42
Yes i'm on Liberty. The (Courageous) Holy Soldier; lvl 20 Nat. Tanker (Invul + SS + Leaping). If you want to join an SG, i'm sure the GDF has some open slots.

It's currently on the test server, very buggy though, I'll doubt we'll see it on the live server before the end of this month.

Wow when did this start up.

Well as the first person who had started talking about CoH on the boards here at HCRealms. Probable one of the first people that was on CoH boards.

Most HCRealmers are on Liberty server. Which is the server my namesake is on. These are my Main Characters

Manchine Level 35 FF/Energy Offender
Animal Teen 27 Martial Arts/Super Reflexs Scrapper
Fhoton 27 Energy/Devices Blaster
Earth Lord Stone 22 Armour/Super Strength Tank

I dont Power Level even though I have played since Beta. I still havent reached 50. One of the biggest things is my characters I made are how I envision them and not what is the best to be played. Which makes it really hard for some of my characters and really easy for others.

I have one of the few Super Groups that have stayed around. Our numbers have dwindled down to 15/20 characters (6 people playing) but its active at least. ANyone interested Kliq on my homepage or just take a look at my webcomic.

Captian At'em lvl 32 blaster (I accepted before I spell checked) looking to possibly join a new super group as most of my current one seems to have dissapered (WOW)

Does anyone have any basic strategies for using Enhancements? I'm really starting to see how important they are to building your character, but I'm finding it hard to see a pattern in how they should work best.

Basic Strategy for Enhancements. My first 3 (for attack powers) are always 1 End Reducer, Acc Enhancement, and Damage Enhancement.

Check out

Stepper79, check out my super group. We have a nice group that enjoy playing togethor. Our Mains are right in the Low to mid 30's. I will put you on my friends list so I can get in contact with you if you want.

there are two sites other than the COH main site that I would point towards. 1st on the COH site message boards review the character Guides they give suggestions as to how best outfit or equip different character types. also look at Cityofheroes.warcry and the city of heroes resource center, there are links off the COH meesage boards.

Some basic enh rules:
Keep them in the green if possible (ie 1-3 levels higher than you are)
You can have multiples of the same enh on a power.
BUT there is diminishing returns. (ie you'll se less benifit from the 2nd dam enh than you will from the 1st, and will see less from the 3rd, ect)
At lower level and limited # of slots on each power make sure you look at the power before you add an enh. If a power does good damage and is accurate, maybe recharge time reduction or or reduced end cost are your 1st priorities.
You can do other things to get the effect of enh. If you use a lot of acc Inspirations, maybe you don't need acc enh. Maybe you have the Build up power and won't need Dam enh so much.
Dual orgins (and later single origin) enhancements can be expensive for a character that can 1st buy them (and you usually will have to buy them because you rarely get the right enh at the right level randomly).
Start buying DO at level 12 as you can afford them. They'll be level 15 and will work great. Try not to have to buy more enh until level 18 when you can buy level 20 enh and combine them with you're old ones to make level 21 enh.
Always sell and enh at the right store. Stores that sell science enh pay more for science/anything else dual orgins they they will for non science dual origin.
There is also generic stores that pay the most for generic enh. these are only important at the lower levels (under15 or so) when you really need all the influence you can get.

I am about to lose my account (shared it with a friend, he doesn't want to keep paying and it's his credit card) but my character on Justice, Ultrakid, is a lvl 15 tanker inv/ss. I'll be getting my own account as soon as I get a better computer. It arrives this weekend.

After that, I'm moving to Champion. If folks need a solid tanker, wait one week or so and I should be about where I was again. No power leveling, either.

Oh... funny thing that happened yesterday. I walked onto a mission on request and met up with the group just after a combat.

Me: Hey, guys! What're we doing?
Team Leader: Taking lots of damage.
Team Member: Trying to hit the debt cap.

It worked out well. Anybody mind if I look them up if I join in on the Infinity Action, too?

webhead817
04/06/2005, 16:08
Thanks for the resources guys.

Stepper, my play style tends towards the tanker build, but I've got a pretty full cast of characters that I designed back in the day that I'm translating in, so I intend to have one of about everything built at some point. ;) My main guy two guys (both approaching level 10 - low level) are Onyx Obelisk, a magic tanker that gets his powers from the black energy from a huge mystical stone, and Fly By, a technology blaster that will eventually be centered around his flight abilities, with energy blasts as his primary offense.

Tanker is a great beginner build, mostly because you don't die as easy or as often. ;)

Like others, I've been playing City of Heroes since Beta, and before that, eagerly anticipating the release of the game from when I first heard about it in late 2001/early 2002.

And how's this for a bit of trivia?

City of Heroes was first mentioned (as discovered by a text search for 'City of Heroes') on HCRealms by spidey2099 on May 15, 2002, when he was asking if anyone else had heard about the game.

And webhead817, check out http://coh.warcry.com/ for a few resources, including a City of Heroes Hero Planner complete with damage resitances/defense rates calculator, etc.

I'll rephrase it then; First thread started about City of Heroes on HCRealms was spidey2099 on May 15, 2002. And Manchine joined HCRealms in August 2002, you do the math. ;)

And Manchine, if you read this (above), I'm not dissin' you or attempting to tear strips off you in any way, I just read your first post and thought it would be interesting to see when City of Heroes was first mentioned on HCRealms.

No offense, malice intended.

This will be taking the place of the regular CoH Comic. The First 12 issues was with Apex and War Witch. They hired the guy who wrote Part or all of Kingdom Come to Write CoH. Its gonna be produced by Top Cow. So it should be Good.

Awesome game. I've spent entirely too much time playing it. :) I started about a month after release and other than taking a break here and there, I've played practically every day.

Liberty is my home server, but I have alts on a few others as well. Here's a quick run-down of who I play most often from my roster:

Dwarf Gray (Liberty)
Level 50: Tanker: Invulnerability/Super Strength
He started out as a fun-to-play side character for a supergroup, but eventually became my main. He just hit 50 not long ago and still has *alot* of missions ahead of him.

X-Mod (Liberty)
Level 30: Defender: ForceField/Electrical Blast
I made her during the WinterLord season because I didn't want to power-lvl any of my main characters. I managed to get her from lvl 1 to 29 in about 25 hours of gameplay doing nothing but WL hunting! :p

Dwarf Crimson (Liberty)
Level 21: Scrapper: Claws/Super Reflexes
My 2nd Dwarf for the SG. I've learned that SR is a great secondary powerset. Now that he has his powers slotted a bit, he doesn't get hit very often at all!

Graycier (Liberty)
Level 12: Blaster: Ice Blast/Ice Manipulation
After he hit 50, Dwarf Gray decided to make some modifications to his systems. :) Now he's a very COOL blaster. ;)

Violet Heart (Liberty)
Level 18: Controller: Gravity Control/Empathy
Until recently, she was the only controller I've ever played. They just seem to take SO long to lvl... and can't solo anything until they have pets.

Dwarf Obsidian (Liberty)
Level 7: Scrapper: Martial Arts/Super Reflexes
My latest addition to the D.W.A.R.F. supergroup. I wanted to make a ninja dwarf... so here he is!

Speed.Demon (Justice)
Level 22: Scrapper: Dark Melee/Regeneration

Ravena Darkstar (Justice)
Level 22: Defender: Dark Miasma/Dark Blast

Ravena Darkstar (Liberty)
Level 12: Warshade
Once the epic archetypes were unlocked, I thought it'd totally fit my dark/dark defender, Ravena's, character to join with a kheldian to become a WS.

Black-Thorn (Infinity)
Level 12: Scrapper: Spines/Dark Armor

Tec-tonic (Freedom)
Level 8: Controller: Earth Control/Kinetics
I just made this guy the other day. He's only my 2nd controller and I'm still not used to the "away from battle" playstyle. Guess I'm just a tank at heart. :)

I think that covers most of my "main" alts. If I think of more, I'll be sure to post 'em here. Oh, and I can be found on Global Chat as HeroMC

My global chat is @Onyx Obelisk

My main character (Freedom Server) is Fly By, just hit level 10 as a techno blaster...I've got the energy blasts suite and the gadgets going, this is a character I dreamed up as a kid, it's pretty cool to bring him to life in the game.

Any points on running Super Groups?

Stepper79
04/14/2005, 12:22
global Chat Stepper79 (I like consistancy)

with super groups you are probably better off joining one rather than starting your own for now. I had my own for a while and it basically became two of us which was bad went things got Crazy, I am a member of one now that used to have a ton of people on but lately it has been lonely, I am guessing that many will return with the arena's or I might just ask machine for an auxilary memebership to his

04/14/2005, 12:33

04/14/2005, 13:00
I've been on since Beta as well, and thoroughly love the game. My main character is Spring'eel Jack, a level 38 dark/claws scrapper, who's a super-jumping fool. Nothing I like better than jumping from rooftop to rooftop of skyscrapers, it's addicting. I have characters on a few servers, but the only ones I really play anymore are on Virtue, which I guess is the "role-playing" server. Here are a couple of my other characters on Virtue, in case you see 'em running around:

X O Skeleton, level 12-ish spines/regen scrapper
Nitro Furgeson, level 17 or so stone/axe tanker

The core characters for our supergroup are: Voltronic, Dark Prismatic, Tremblor, TronBeta, and Indigo Moon. Say hey if you see any of us online. We tend not to powerlevel, because we're role-players and into the storylines. But we're all more than happy team up with other people.

As far as enhancements go, I try to keep them maxed out thus: Buy the best enhancements you can, but only when you can combine them with your current ones. For example, if my character is sitting at level 17, the best that I most likely have are 15++, unless I got lucky and found some other ones that aren't on the 5s or 10s. Now, at level 17, I can buy 20s, but I typically wouldn't. I would wait until level 18, and buy 20s then, to combine with my existing 15++s.

Also, remember that you can combine enhancements that are already slotted. What I mean by that is, if you have a level 20 single-origin (SO) and a level 17 SO slotted, you can combine them into a 20+. This comes in handy sometimes, if you have say a level 18+, level 19+, and level 18 slotted, and you find a level 20. You probably wouldn't want to combine it with the 18+ or 19+, because you're still stuck with that 18. And you might not want to combine it with the 18, because there's a higher chance for failure, and you lose the ability to combine it twice with enhancements that you find. So you can combine the 18+ with the 18, and then slot your new 20 in the space left by the 18, and end up with an 18++, 19+, and 20. This way, the 18++ and 19+ can be combined with 20s that you buy later, and the 20 can be combined with any others you find. Whew, I hope this wasn't all confusing...

Anyhow, hope to see some of y'all online!

I've seen this strategy posted many times and I still don't see the reasoning behind it. Here's how this strategy looks to me:

At lvl 17 you're using 15++, which basically means you're using 17s. So you're only getting the base bonus from your enhancements because they're the same lvl as you. At lvl 18, you buy 20s to combine with your current 17s to make 21s. But what if the combining fails? Those two enhancements are 3 lvls apart. Doesn't that put the combining percentage at 85% success? If it fails, then you're sitting at lvl 18 using 20s instead of 21s, giving you only +2% bonus instead of +3%.

At lvl 17, I buy 20s... giving me the base bonus + 3% more. It's much less risky and, in my experience, well worth the investment. I always start buying new enhancements at the X2 and X7 lvls. And once I get high enough and have the influence to spare, I'll actually buy even more on the X3, X4, X8, and X9 lvls and combine them so I have the highest enhancements I can at every lvl.

My global handle is @AmericAgent.

It's great to see realmers playing the game. If anyone is interested in starting new heroes, I recruit lower levels for my two themed supergroups.

On Liberty, it's heroes whose costumes are based on a country's flag. We already have America, Canada, and Australia, and I'm looking for more.

On Virtue, we have quirky characters kind of like the Tick. Zeke the Ninja, the Chinch, and Spare Parts are examples.

My dark/dark defender is about to hit 12 and will get to choose a new power. Has anyone ever used Fearsome Stare and how effective is it?

webhead817

How is CoV going to work in terms of investment and maintenance? If I already have CoH up and running with an account, do I just buy CoV, install it, then log into my existing account, or do I have to open a second one? Or, to be more to the point, will my current monthly fee cover CoV as well, or would I have to pay for both each month?

Stepper79
04/15/2005, 11:50
my understanding is that if you already have an account then COV is just an upgrade, they have stated is several places that you do not have to buy it, but if you don't then you will not be able to take advantage of the new features Supergroup bases, and playing a bad guy. I would be upset if they made me have a new account for and Expansion as they call it.

I'm so glad there is an official Heroclix COH thread now. I've tried using the COH fourms and it's not working for me. I don't usderstand how to navigate (probalby spoiled with this system at the realms and don't want to learn). Thanks WebHead for the thread. I have a lot of heroes on multiple sites. Where do ya'll play and what days, times, do ya'll play? I'll be sure to find a way to hook up with ya'll and play. I've been trying to get GG into the game as well. He just got a new comp. so maybe i'll take it over there and show him. As far as your enhancements go they have PRO's on the Forums at COH that know all about the effects, %'s that give at what levels, these guys must have no life or work for COH to know all this. Anyway, I learned from a guy while playing about some enhancements. I't funny b/c it started off where I helped him b/c he was being over run by enimies (little did I know he had everything under control) So, I helped him and he says to me, "thanks for the xp steal" I was like, "dude I thought you needed help, I hate it when ppl run by me and I'm getting mobbed and get killed and know one helps me." He then explained how to kill mass groups easy w/his char. and taught me to do it with mine. I have a:

Scrapper: Claws/Regen and I 6 Slotted Spin w/ DO Damage Enhance and then Got follow up and Slotted it. Now I do like 90 to 100 per group I hit w/ my spin, it's crazy. Can kill like a whole group w/just 2 spin attacks, usually.

The assumption that I didn't mention is that at some point you've found "in-between" enhancements that you've managed to combine with your 15++, so that they're better than the "base" ones that you can buy, but still not as good as the next level that you'll be able to buy. Mostly because lwer-level enhancements would max out at ++ earlier than the next level that you could buy, because, well, they're lower level.

There's so much randomness in enhancements that you find that it's probably just as useful to find a method that you fully understand, even if it doesn't make the absolute most efficient use of enhancements. After a while it becomes irrelevant because you always have some much influence to burn anyhow. My main character has 6 million sitting around doing nothing. There should be some kind of influence investment program. :)

What? 6 Million? My level 11 guy hovers around 5000 - 7000, and I forsee myself being "broke" soon when I want to upgrade to level 15 enh.'s at level 12...how is it that you end up with that much? Do you ever gift it to people? I'd love to hit someone up for even a small percentage of that...

It's all about the difficulty. I upped mine to invincible on Noble Dark (35 Dark/Dark Scrapper on liberty) and I have about 1 mil on him. It usually gathers up, takes a small hit for an upgrade, and then continues. I just got though a small enhancement crisis, where all of mine ran out and I was broke. I got a friend to help there. Right now I'm fully stocked on SO's.

Though at the earlier levels it could be easier to participate in costume contests. I just held one recently where the winner received 100 thousand, and anyone who joined in got 20000. I'm generous like that.

Hmm, see I've always found Costume Contest annoying...the few times I've sat through one, the "judge" ended up doing something stupid like announcing "The winner is...ME! Ha ha ha" and then they run away. That's annoying.

Once you hit Level 30 you can start saving up Influence. At least that was the way it was with me. On Liberty server I have seen people do 3 catogories for Costume Contests.

Overall Winner - Best Costume - Big prize Money about 500k
Funniest Costume - 100k
Best Origin - 100k (This is something that is new but I have seen it the last 2 times and I did it the one time.)

He's level 38, so it's really not that much. I haven't bumped up the difficulty for him at all. I pretty regularly do costume and background contests, so I give a good chunk of it away periodically. 5000-7000 sounds about right for level 11, maybe a little low. I have a level 11 scrapper right now, and he's got maybe 12,000 or so.

Yeah, generally being in a costume contest is kind of lame, if the judge is a tool. They can be fun if you have a good group of players, though. The last one I ran, all the players really got into it. The last one I was in, the judge had us all doing stupid people tricks (jumping jacks, etc), then gave the prize to two of the sorriest costumes I'd ever seen.

Am I missing something then? I haven't really gone hog wild buying enhancements, but I do try to keep stocked up on Inspirations, but those are typically only 50 a spot. I've recently realized that selling extra enhancements you pick up back is a decent way to pull in more points, but I don't see any other way to acrue them.

Do you play on teams or solo typically? Team missions tend to have a little higher difficulty, and so give out a bit more xp and influence.

I'm a big spender on costume alterations and Single Origins, but at the moment I've got 20 million Influence saved up, I know I'm going to need it and probably a bit more when Issue #4 goes live (body sliders, tournament entrance fees, etc.) and when City of Villains hits; SUPERGROUP BASES! Yes, they're going to cost a pretty penny.

And for those who are into PvP on the test server right now, check this out (latest patch notes from the test server):

o Significantly altered the manner in which PvP Detoggle powers work. Instead of knocking down all toggle powers, each has a chance of knocking off one or more Toggles. The powers effected are:

At the start I did a lot of Soloing. Thats why I am a Energy/Force Field. I dont even have the 2 little bubbles that everyone says they are great. (It doesnt help me soloing so I am not going to get them.)

My friends that play have a Baby and have to get off or go AFK for a few every now and then. So I am use to it. I usually only play for 2 hours then take a break (so I dont have seizures). Then come back and play again.

what is starting to annoy me is this, i tend to solo a lot at level 35 Energy Blaster i get by doing that and usually do not do teams, but now that i seem to be getting only missons with Arch villiams i will be forced to start building teams to take them out, cause you cant do it by yourself......

Even I have to call for help against Arch Villians. Either that or wait a level or 2 before I can FIght them. I use to have my Difficulty slider up to the Mid Mark but I usually have 2 or 3 Level 31's with me. Power Leveling some GDF Members. I cant handle all that.

At level 35 I havent run into any Arch Villians yet. I really am expecting them to show up.

weezer_10
04/19/2005, 21:11
Manchine, the first archvillain you will most likely face at that level will be the Envoy of Shadows (Circle of Thorns arc), and you will have to defeat him on three separate occasions.

But it's around level 40 the real fun starts; Psychic Babbage, Psychic Clockwork, Praetorians (like Tyrant, the evil version of Statesman), Carnies AVs; lots of uber enemies to keep your entertained right through to level 50.

The toughest AV I've come across so far (not counting Psychics) would have to be Marauder, if you don't have much smash/lethal protection, you'd better stay well back away from him. Marauder has the tendancy to immune himself from Smash/Lethal damage also, very nasty.

And yeah, happy to be an opponent to you Manchine; villainy is the biggest form of flattery in my opinion. I look forward to meeting your villain. ;)

A respec is a reward for doing a task force at three points in the game. In a respec, you repick all of you powers from level 1 up to your current level. The levels you get to do a respec are 24, 34, and 44.

And I wouldn't reccomend leadership. It doesn't effect your stats enough to make a noticeable difference. At least, that's how it was for Noble. Instead, get hasten. If you can 6-slot it and put in 6 single origin recharges on it, you can have auto hasten. I find it extremely useful.

The number one piece of advice I can give you is get fitness. A 6-slotted Stamina will help you TREMENDOUSLY. As a tank, endurance could be a serious problem without it. :classic:

I think what Venarnage is referring to are the "ancillary" or "epic" power pools that become available once your character hits lvl 41 (yeah, it's 41, not 40).

Check the forums for your specific archetype (Defender, Blaster, etc...) on the official CoH site and look in the Character Guides threads. They often have a full list of the epic pools powers that you get to select from... they're different for each archetype. AND it's very important to understand that you can only select ONE set of epic powers. You cannot select powers from multiple sets (as you can with regular pool powers).

Regarding pets: They're almost totally exclusive to Controller primary powersets. I think every primary Controller set has at least 1 pet-summoning power and Illusion Control has (I think) 3 different pet-powers. The non-Controller powersets that include pet powers are Electrical Blast, Dark Miasma, and Storm Summoning. There may be a few others, but they are very rare outside of the Controller sets.

Alright, looks like I was partially wrong. here's what I found on the CoH forums...
Defender
Dark Mastery
POWER NAME Oppressive Gloom
DESCRIPTION: The Netherworld has many mutable properties, such as the Oppressive Gloom. This power allows you to use your own life force (Hit Points) to fuel an attack that can keep enemies near you Disoriented and unable to use any powers. Endurance cost for this is minimal, but the power can be dangerous to use.
Toggle: PBAoE, Foe Disorient, Self -HP

POWER NAME Dark Consumption
DESCRIPTION: The dark power of the Netherworld allows you to tap the soul-essence of foes immediately around you and transfer it to yourself. This will drain the Hit Points of the enemies, and add to your Endurance.
PBAoE Moderate DMG(Negative), Self +End

POWER NAME Dark Embrace
DESCRIPTION: You tap into the energy of the Netherworld to protect yourself from damage. This Dark Embrace shrouds you and grants resistance to Lethal, Smashing, Toxic, and Negative Energy damage. You must have Oppressive Gloom or Dark Consumption before selecting this power.
Toggle: Self +Rees (Smash, Lethal, Negative, Toxic)

POWER NAME Soul Drain
DESCRIPTION: Using this power, you can drain the essence of all nearby foes' souls, thus increasing your own strength. Each affected foe will lose some Hit Points and add to your Damage and Accuracy. You must have two other Dark Mastery Powers before selecting this power.
PBAoE Moderate DMG (Negative), Self +DMG, +ACC

Power Mastery
POWER NAME Conserve Power
DESCRIPTION: The Hero can focus for a moment to conserve his Endurance. After activating this power, the Hero uses less Endurance for all his other powers for a while. Conserving such Energy is very difficult, and this power takes a very long time to recharge.
Self +Special

POWER NAME Power Buildup
DESCRIPTION: Your mastery of power and energy allows you to greatly increase the damage you deal for a few seconds, as well as slightly increasing your Accuracy Additionally, Power Build Up greatly boosts the secondary effects of your powers. Your powers effects like Heals, Defense Buffs, Endurance Drains, Disorients, Holds, Immobilizes, and Knock Back are all improved.
Self +DMG, +ACC, +Special

POWER NAME Temp Invulnerability
DESCRIPTION: When you toggle on this power, you become highly resistant to Smashing and Lethal damage. You must have Conserve Power or Power Build Up before selecting this power.
Toggle: Self +Res (Smash, Lethal)

POWER NAME Total Focus
DESCRIPTION: Total Focus is complete mastery over Energy Melee. This is a very slow, but incredibly devastating attack that can knock out most opponents, leaving them Disoriented. Due to the exhausting nature of Total Focus, recharge time is very long. You must have two other Power Mastery Powers before selecting this power.
Melee, Extreme DMG (Energy/Smash), Foe Disorient

Psychic Mastery
POWER NAME Dominate
DESCRIPTION: Painfully tear at the mind of a single target foe. Dominate deals Psionic damage and renders a foe helpless, lost in his own mind and unable to defend himself.
Ranged, Moderate DMG(Psionic), Foe Hold

POWER NAME Mass Hypnosis
DESCRIPTION: Hypnotizes a group of foes at a distance and puts them to Sleep. The targets will remain asleep for some time, but will awaken if attacked. This power deals no damage, but if done discretely, the targets won’t even be aware of your presence.
Ranged (Targeted AoE), Foe Sleep

POWER NAME Mind over Body
DESCRIPTION: When you toggle on this power, you empower your Mind over Body to become highly resistant to Smashing, Lethal and Psionic damage. You must have Mental Blast or Indomitable Will before selecting this power.
Toggle: Self +Res(Smash, Lethal, Psionics)

POWER NAME Telekinesis
DESCRIPTION: Lifts a foe, and any nearby foes, off the ground and repels them. The targets are helpless, unable to take action, and will continue to hover away, picking up any passing targets, as long as you keep this power active. Keeping up this level of concentration costs a lot of Endurance. You must have two other Psychic Mastery Powers before selecting this power.
Toggle Ranged (Targeted AoE), Foe Hold, Repel

Electric Mastery
POWER NAME Electric Fence
DESCRIPTION: Surrounds and immobilizes a single target an Electric Fence. Deals some damage over time and slowly drains some Endurance.
Ranged, Moderate DoT(Energy), Foe Immobilize, -End

POWER NAME Thunder Strike
DESCRIPTION: A massive attack. You smash your foes with all the power of a lightning bolt. The pummeled victim may be Disoriented, and all nearby foes may be knocked down and take additional damage.
Melee (AoE), High DMG(Smash), Foe Disorient, Knock back

POWER NAME Charged Armor
DESCRIPTION: When you toggle on this power, you are surrounded in a charged field that makes you highly resistant to Smashing, Lethal and Energy damage.
Toggle: Self +Res(Smash, Lethal, Energy)

POWER NAME Power Sink
DESCRIPTION: Power Sink leeches energy directly from the bodies of all nearby foes, draining their Endurance. Each foe you draw energy from increases your Endurance. If there are no foes within range, you will not gain any Endurance. You must have two other Electricity Mastery Powers before selecting this power.
PBAoE, Self +End, Foe -End

OK, so I've got this new tanker (Diesel Lord on Freedom), what are people's opinions on loading up Enhancement slots on one power to max it out? I'm building this character mechanics wise from the perspective that he'll be a straight tanker for me, i.e., I'm going to focus on his defense powers and eschew the fancy stuff for now (because I only plan to play him in groups where he won't need to be able to get around on his own fast for example.)

Hey, I noticed someone mentioning costume and origin contests a while back, and thought I'd put in a bit of a mention...

My primary character is Gale, lvl 50 Claws and Reflexes scrapper (who actually thinks of Super Speed as his main power). Never pled, did every mission on my way up...so needless to say, it took a LONG time. But anyway; a few months ago (I'm currently not subscribed, but they never cancel your characters) I held my own contest. It was a footrace throughout various zones of the city. We had a judge with flight who would hover over the track (I set up various areas within the zones we were supposed to run between) and call the winner for each section, in addition to watching the team menu for banned powers such as flight, teleportation, or super leaping. As I said, it was a FOOT race. For prizes, I offered 30 million influence for the winner and 10 million for the runner up (yeah, at 50 you have loads of money you don't know what to do with).

I did compete, but it's not as unfair as you might think. Super Speed caps at a relatively low level, so someone level 20 or so who wanted to be as fast as me would be with just a few enhancements. The race went pretty well for the few people who showed up (amazing considering the prizes...), and I didn't even win. I came in second overall.

So yeah, there are other contests going on than just the ones you've noted. I wanted to hold the race every month, but was then required to not subscribe to the game for a time. I'll likely be starting it up again once I make my return for CoV. This race was held on Guardian. But I had heard that they planned to allow heroes to change servers in a future update..does anyone have news on this? It would solve a lot of the problems the previous posters seem to have getting together.

Also, if anyone has made custom clix of their CoH characters, posting their dials and sculpts here might be interesting. I tried to set up a thread for that before, but was unable to due to a lack of a digital camera on my part.

Though I've never won a contest, I did have a level 50 hero (Ra on Freedom) grant me 99,999 influence just because he liked my bio...that was pretty cool. At low levels, that enough to jump start a couple of mine and a buddies characters. :)

Pretty cool. A group on Virtue hosted the superhero Olympics a few months ago. Things like super speed races, super leap races, etc. My main character, Spring'eel Jack, super leaps like crazy, so I wanted to get into it. Unfortunately our supergroup was in the middle of a task force and I couldn't leave. Since then I've wished that someone would host another leaping contest so I could get into it. Maybe I'll have to do it meself. :)

Is it true that with the new update coming out, we (as COH players) will be able to choose from more costumes?

Also, when are they going to introduce more powers or diffrent powers? I was wanting a Psychic scrapper, you know kind of like Psylocke, Cyblade. . . that would be SWEEEEET!!!!

another question: whats up with debt? i know you build up some debt everytime you die and pay some back with every kill, but what does it do? does it make you not build up as much xp per kill until you pay it off?

If you have debt it means that you only earn half of the XP you would normally get. The other half of the XP goes towards paying off your debt. So while you have debt, it takes twice as long for you to lvl.

Regarding supergroups: In the Arenas in issue 4, I believe supergroup leaders can create a kind of "SG-only" match and challenge the leader of another supergroup. I think these matches can be up to 75 vs 75 people... SG vs SG.

you seem to have a handle on the areana issue, couple of questions....

Whats it going to cost to do battle?

And i have heard you can buy temp. powers, is that true ?

And what advantage would someone have against someone using stealth, how say would a blaster be able to find them, or had would a scrapper be able to get through a tankers inv. defense?

And i have heard you can buy temp. powers, is that true ? Yes there are certain temp powers you get. One is a Jet pack. Which gives you flgiht for 5 minutes.

And what advantage would someone have against someone using stealth, how say would a blaster be able to find them, or had would a scrapper be able to get through a tankers inv. defense?

Once you attack you are able to be seen. There is a certain time frame that you can be seen if you go full stealth. Brawl has a chance to knock out Toggled powers (There is other powers that do this also Force Bolt is my Favorite) Yes Scrapper's can get through Tankers Invuln defense. My Scrapper Martial Artist went one on one vs a Higher level tanker. I lost but he was a Flame Tanker. I was doing damage to him but he had the higher level and beat me down. When I faced people of Equal level. I took down a few. Damage has been knocked down in arena Combat. There is not sniping to kill someone instantly.

I am currently Supergroup-less; the last one I was in disbanded due to several of the leaders moving on to World of Warcraft (which I play as well, but it's no where near as good as CoH).

So if anyone knows of any supergroups looking for a good level 50 Tanker, let me know. ;)

It spoke to me, as I hope it speaks to anyone who plays this game. We've all been in that situation. We all desire to find the place we belong in Paragon City. Never give up. Fight the good fight. when you reach a certian level you can take part in the terra volta trials (three different version) once you are done you get a Respec (re Specification) of your powers so you can re allocate everything and change some of the power sets that you selected. since yesterday was the 1st year anniverary of COH going live they are giving everyone a free respec so if you are a loner like me you can change things up a bit without having to take the trial (lot of time)

It took me the longest time to figure out the official CoH Forums. You need to use your *account* name (the one you use to log-in to the game) and your *forum* password (not the same as your game log-in account password).

I don't create many binds, myself. On the rare occasions when I think of some bind that I'd like to try, I usually just search the CoH forums or other CoH sites for bind examples of what I'm looking for. Here's what I found for the two you listed:

/bind r "emote roar"

/bind p "powexec_name brawl"

There are plenty of sites with bind tips. Here's just two of the many I found when searching on Google:

ok had my first experience in the arena last night just a couple fights pretty cool, although I notice that most of my oppponets seem to have the same thinking that will get them killed in the arena at least for now. What I mean is most of us are used to fighting villians who will lose interest and not pursue you if you move away fast and far enough or that only have one maybe two attacks before they need to recharge or that to some degree you can sneak up on from range.... meanwhile as an actual person controling my toon I can continue to hammer away at my opponent and beat him down where normally he would have a break from the attacks. just my 2 cents, I think the arenas will bring a lot of fun to the game.

CoV Beta

The program will give priority to those who have been subscribed to City of Heroes the longest. A percentage of slots will be reserved for City of Heroes’ veterans, players who have subscribed to City of Heroes for at least 12 months. Those players will automatically earn a slot as a Villains beta tester. Players with at least six months of time in City of Heroes will receive the next level of priority consideration for the beta testing program. Higher character level is not necessarily an advantage in the selection process.

“We are announcing the plans today due to the overwhelming amount of requests we’ve received from our subscribers,” said Jack Emmert, lead designer for City of Heroes. “It makes sense for us to offer this incentive to our most dedicated players. Who else would be more capable of assisting us in the beta test than the folks most familiar with the way City of Heroes works?”

Emmert added, “We’ll be announcing more details at a later date, but the bottom line is that the longer you’ve subscribed to the game, the better your chances will be of getting a first-look at City of Villains.”

City of Villains will provide players with a chance to play the “bad guy” in the comic-book inspired world created by Cryptic Studios. Take on the role of super-powered villains and create your own character using thousands of power and costume options. Then battle heroes and become a true menace to society while plotting your way to world domination.

City of Heroes is currently available at major North American computer game retail outlets at an expected retail price of US$39.99, which includes the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.95. Sixty-day game time cards are available at many North American retailers for an expected retail price of US$29.99. The game is rated Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

Some interesting Tid bits from E3 about City of Villians.

Brute: At its most basic description, this is the CoV version of the Tanker. The first thing I noticed, however, is that they have their primaries and secondaries switched. So while this AT clearly performed as a Tank in the Base Raids, their powers were setup with their attacks as their primary and their defenses as their secondary. It was obvious that the Brute would have access to some of the same sets as a tanker, but also some new sets all together. For example the Base Raid Brute was using Dark Armor as his defense set, and fire melee as his primary. There was also, I noticed a Dark Fire defense set, which I suspect will work similar to the current Fire Aura defense set. Overall I would classify the Brute as a Tanker with a higher emphasis on damage.

Stalker: Again, the simplest way to describe this AT is as the Villian version of a Scrapper. Again, like the Brute, the Stalker worked most clearly like a scrapper only with his primary and secondary power sets swapped. The Stalker they had available was a Regen / Ninja Sword stalker. That's right, ninja sword, not katana. While the ninja-sword set did have mostly the same attacks as the Katana, it did have some features that I would describe as Stalker specific. By now you've probably asked yourself why would you want to play a stalker if the Brute already appears to have the best of both worlds, higher damage and near tank-like defenses. Stalker abilities would be the answer. While the stalker might not have quite the damage potential of the scrapper, they will do pleanty of damage. Stalker behave more like thieves in that they only do the really high damage, potentially higher then anyone else, but only in specific cercumstances, such as the backstab. Looking through the Stalker powerset I noticed a few powers that were clearly being set apart. For example, in the stalker Regen set, you had all the typical powers, except you also had an additional hide abilitiy. This Hide is basically a stealth, but it did not fit with the rest of the defense set. Likewise the ninja-sword set had a couple of bright red attacks which claimed to do moderate damage "+Special". So I looked at the power descriptions and it mentioned that these attacks were considered "Hide abilities". Attacks that have some additional effect, but only while you're hidden. The only one available to the Stalker I was playing was the Assasin Blade attack. A basic attack that does a much greater amount of damage if you're using Hide at the time. That's right, Stalkers get true backstabs.

Destroyer: This set was actually harder to classify, but inthe end I would have to describe it as the Villian equivilant of a Defender. Again, however, their primaries and secondaries were swaped. Meaning that while they had massive buffs and debuffs, their primary consisted of blast sets. This also made Destroyers the closest thing to Blasters available among villians. I suspect now you'll get to use psychic and dark blast as your primaries, in addition to new sets. I suspect Destroyers will get to do just below Blaster and above Defender level of damage, with near defender strength buffs and debuffs in their secondaries. It should be interesting to see how people play Destroyers, since most people will probably want to play them as either defenders or blasters. But like the Devs said, none of these archetypes fit exactly with current CoH archetypes, eventually people will have to play them as their own unique thing.

Dominators: As you could not get to play this AT at the show, there was no way to be sure how this AT would play out other then watching the demo movies carefully. From what I've seen, and going off the name as well, I suspect Dominatiors will be the CoV version of Controllers. Following the trend of the other ATs, I would not be surprised if Dominators had their primaries and secondaries swapped. This would make them interesting to play, since they would be alot like Defenders given that that would be their primary. However from what I've seen, Dominators will be the only AT with access to the Control power sets, even if it's just as a secondary. This is all guesswork, however. Like all the new villian ATs you will have to play it as its own thing.

Masterminds: This AT was a total enigma, for the most part. There really wasn't any way to know for sure what they actually do, but I think I have a pretty good idea after watching the demo movie carefully for 3 days. In this movie they showed a Mastermind, telling minions to attack some heroes, then he took out a bow and shot a special arrow. From what I saw, the mastermind was clearly using the trick arrow set, which is, in fact, a new Defender primary set. So we can saftely assume that a Masterminds secondary will be Defender primaries. Now what about their Primary? I suspect that a Mastermind's primary revolves around gaining and controlling minnions. In other words, the ultimate Pet class, you will get all sorts of minions that you can command with your powers. I do believe the Devs have said before that you will get to command minions in CoV, and that Masterminds will get to do something completely new. Even Geko mentioned recently that he was working on "CoV Player Powers" and "Critter Powers". Adds up to a minions/critters powerset I think.

Well, I will say this, it definately looks like a lot of fun. Cryptic's setup was in the far little corner of NCSoft's massive booth. They had two rows of 8 computers on each side of their display, with larger screen all over their setup running previews of CoV and the latest CoV E3 trailer. On the back side of their display the computers where showing the new CoV costume creation screen, where you could check out all the new Villian costume options, as well as the new base editor, where you could build your own custome base. The other side of their display on the front side had what was really the main draw for alot of people, PvP base raid matches.

First on the Villian costumes, they looked seriously wicked. There was a clear intent on making Villian costume options more evil looking, but some of their stuff was just too cool. I particulatly loved the metalic bones and skull options with the shiny environmental mapping on them. Villians also had Beastial options. So you could really make your villian look like traditional villanous monsters, such as werewolves (including wolf-like heads and feet), vampires (yes, as in fangs and everything), and other monstrous creatures. Also you have the body modification sliders, but with villians you will actually be able to scale your body features to more extremes, such as having much larger/longer faces and what not. The reason for this is this allows you to create more extreme villian appearences, make them, for lack of a better word, uglier and more villianous looking. Unlike the heroes which even in extreme are still designed to look somewhat heroic.

As for the Base Editor, it was just as detailed as the costume editor. I'm not kidding, there were litterally a million some odd choices for every room. You could decorate every room in your base with just about anything you can imagine, in any style you could come up with. I suspect you could recreate pretty much any basic indoor mission setting you could want. You're only limited in the amount of space you have to build your base with. The more space you have the more expensive your base will be to rent. That's right, rent, bases will cost a ton of influence to build an upkeep, they are clearly designed as an influence sink for all those people with more influence then they know what to do with. So in order to have a base, you will have to pay rent on the amount of space you will have. Also adding anything in the base will be expensive. The Devs are still working out the amounts, but it will be pretty costly to decorate a room. Then again, if your SG has enough 50s in their midst with more influence then they know what to do with then you can easily have a customized room for EVERY SINGLE member of that group, in addition to common areas and utility rooms. What do I mean by utility rooms, basically rooms with some added funciton. Like a vault, a hospital, ect. These are rooms you will have so your base will have more funcitonality. You'll be able to get teleporter rooms, forexample, that will allow you to travel to any zone without having to run to the tram all the time. Vaults, of course, will be used as a central storage of influence, enhancements, and other objects that your SG members will be able to use. Hospitals will be most useful in base raids, since they will allow you to spawn in your own base and get back into the action quicker, as was shown in the Base Raid demo they were running. In addition to that a number of the items you can place inside rooms will be useful for base raids as well, just as healing rings, attack turrents, traps, ect., ect. Indeed, many items will have many different uses, but for now the focus was on Base Raids.

The Base Raids Demo was setup as 4 on 4 matches, with Villians raiding the Heroes' base. The base was made using the base editor, no you couldn't edit that base, they had it locked down. But otherwise it was a pretty generic base setup. It did have a hospital inside of it, this way people that were defeated in the match could be rezzed right away inside the base. The match had two objectives, two trophies protected by force fields. The raiders' goal was to capture those trophies from the heroes while the defenders' goal was to prevent the villians from taking both trophies. In order to capture the trophies, you had to take out the force fields by doing enough damage to them, then you had to interact with the trophies themselves, like you would with glowies, in order to capture them. This gave the advantage to the defenders, since they could interupt the raiders by attacking them every time they tried to capture the trophies. It was still very easy to win the with Villian group, but you had to know what to do and hope the heroes didn't. Most people just played it like a basic death match, trying to kill the guys on the other team as much as possible. I did find it telling that every single character there, villian and hero, was given 6 slotted stamina. Probably because it would allow people to stick with the typical "go kill everything alot" style of easy play, probably. It was interesting, you could always tell who actually played CoH, they were the ones that were actually discussing strategy, shaking their heads at everyone else that had no idea what to do. Like any PvP battle, the teams that were working together on the objective won every time, no matter what. CoH veterans were also quick to pick up how to use the villian characters, even though they were playing villian archetypes.

Has anyone else checked out Issue 5 on the test server? I'm hearing all kinds of things about tankers getting completely nerfed, with fire tankers taking the biggest hit. There's a 3-pet cap for controllers, and holds have had their duration cut in half. I also heard that defense values are taking hits across the board. My primary is a scrapper, but I've got a 17 bubbler that I'm guessing will be *really* popular in
