I tend to go after the best player mostly, but I will also do the others as well.

Next, I'll tell you about our 'system' that we've developed for Smash campaigns.

Smash stick is for beginners. The direction+A is just so much more precise and being able to charge is absolutely necessary.

Most of the time I jsut use the x/y buttons, but I do use up when it feels right.

I tend to go for the biggest threat/best player followed by the person with the most lives left (only play survival for the most part).

I almost always use the C-stick for smash moves. I only use the tap+A charge smash when I need to time it precisely. It all depends on the character. I use the stick for the sworded characters, and Fox/Falco, I alternate with Capt. Falcon and the Mario characters, and I use tap+A for Ness. It makes his baseball bat hit a LOT harder. Also if you use PK Fire on an opponent and then charge his bat-smash, it usually puts them in harms way just as it releases. heh.

X and Y. ALWAYS X and Y.

I usually AM the biggest threat. But not so much because of my quickness with attack, but because I'm just hard to kill. It usually happens like this...

either two or three guys will decide that I need to die. They try to corner me. I'll let them get close enough to attack then dodge and let them hit each other. After baiting them a few times, they get pissed at each other for getting hit or killed by their "ally" and begin to attack each other. I simply skip away and play "Item Sniper" from afar. Once they've killed each other, they are all down to either one life, or there's only one player left. I'll still have five or six lives left, so I just waltz in and play clean up.

Usually the vendettas between everyone else is so absolute, I'm not even allowed to fight until revenge has been served.

On the occasion I'm actually allowed to play, I leap around taking random shots on people. The first person to actually kill me, becomes my "target". I then play the bounty hunter game and isolate that one person for death.

Next, I'll tell you about our 'system' that we've developed for Smash campaigns.

1. I rarely, if ever, use the Smash Stick. I find it distracting to have to switch between too many thumb positions. I've found that the fewer buttons you use, the more simplistic and personal the game feels.

2. I use up for jump. Once again, I opt for a conservative controller style. While this does result in the occasional goof, such as attacking sideways in midair instead of downward, I believe that it suits my playstyle well.

3. At the beginning of a game I like to stay neutral, attacking here and there evenly. But if someone starts singling me out, I'll go right for them and never stop. I'm also a bit of an opportunist, so if I see someone with high damage I'll divert briefly to them and KO them.

I'm always going for the win, that's not to say I don't play rough and tumble, but if I'm the winner, then I am happy. I play with someone that always pulls the flip flop. If he wins then thats all that matters, if he's losing then he pretends that KOs is all that matters; I hate that.

I consider myself at my best in 1 on 1 matches, so the win is a nod to that fact.

I always prefer Stock matches over timed, although we usually play a 5 minute match as a finisher after a big session. Pretty silly that the timed option is the default eh? We tend to prefer 2 or 3 stock for nice quick games.

Another question...when you have less than 4 human players, do you turn on Computer controlled players? If so, what level do you set them to?

I find that I want them strong enough to be a threat, but not so strong that they kick everyone's butts, so we usually have them around 5 or 6.

I'm starting to think KOs are more an indication of how good a player is than the actual win, although both are good. I probably rank them equally. Ideally you should get both. ;)

What the?! I just played through the 1P Classic mode with Bowser (set at Medium level, 5 stock) and was up to the Master Hand with 4 lives left. I was doing really well and had him down to about 140pts and still had my 4 lives....when a second Master Hand came and joined in! It was awful. It had a bunch of extra moves as well that I wasn't expecting (like dropping Bob-ombs on my head), and managed to soundly whup me, forcing my to use a continue (and it didn't show up the second time). The second hand also looked a bit deformed and had energy crackling around it. Wierd. :ermm:

Is this some kind of thing that enters when you are doing particularly well? Anyone know what the story is?

That there's Crazy Hand. He shows up if you can get Master Hand down to half health within a certain amount of time IIRC. And yeah, I freaked out the first time I saw him too. That spastic movement and those weird techniques are just kinda unsettling all put together. Maybe that's one of Jack-O's gloves? :confused:

i usually play 5 to 7 stock matches. and 0 computer players. they're just too predictable, even on level 9. and when a computer actually is doing well, everybody will just team up on them and take them out cuz nobody wants the computer to win. so no computer players.

does anybody ever play the slo-mo matches? those are super fun every once in a while. you have to be so much more precise with your moves.

If you used a small character to begin with, (ie: Pichu, Kirby, Ness ect), and you gat a poison muchroom, you are so small, that you can hardly be seen. I'd also recommend increasing the stock, because people die a lot easier.

AND do it on the Hyrule Temple stage. You become little more than a few pixels if the camera zooms out far enough. I've tried it, great fun. :grin:

Another fun match is to team up with a friend against a level 9 Bowser- Defeat the dragon. It's nice. Add in a level 9 DK or Gannondorf as well if that's to easy

Forgot to mention, in the Bowser game we usually set it so the human players are on the same team. Although you don't have to...then you get ot fight it out when (or if) you beat him.

I think it's time to reveal my campaign system. It's good for about 3-5 players, and usually takes a couple of hours (maybe more) to finish. Here's what we do:

First off, everyone chooses their favourite character. So lets say Captain Falcon for example. We set the Stock to 2, the Levels to Ordered and the Handicap to Automatic (especially if there is a range of skill levels present- which their usually is). Then everyone starts with the character to the right of their favourite. So you'd start with Gannondorf.

If you either win the match, or have the most KOs for the match, you get to progress to the next character to the right. If you reach the end of a line, move to the left end of the next one. So lets say you win that battle...next battle you play as Falco. If multiple players get equal top KOs, then all of them get to advance (makes progression a little faster). If you win AND you get the most KOs, you get to move up two slots at once (skipping a character).

The objective, of course, is to finally get to your favourite character and then win. When you are on that final character you MUST win the battle by survival and not KOs (everyone will usually target you by then, making it tough, but you'll also be on your favourite).

The Auto Handicap keeps the lesser skilled players from getting stuck on one guy for too long, and makes it more challenging for the skilled players.

If we have 5 players, then the loser sits out next match (which slows down progress a lot). By changing the player names it keeps track of the Handicap, which is really clever.

I think next time we play it, we might all start on Dr. Mario and work through to Roy. Would be interesting to have a clear picture of how far ahead or behind other people are.

Hey guys, I finally unlocked Mr. Game and Watch, and he is awesome!!!! Love the old school. I used to play those games when I was a kid! One of my new favourite characters, just for sentimental value!

I didn't get Flat Zone at the same time though. I assume it's because I unlocked him just by completing the Target Tests instead of beating Classic mode with everyone (I actually thought I had to do both, so I was pleasantly surprised when I got him).

I also got Battlefield, Dream Land and Poke Floats this week. Not much left to unlock. I really want Final Destination, but it's going to be crazy tough....lots of Events still to go, and they're getting really hard now.

The trick is just to watch the racers in the background coming up on you. Then after you play it a bit, you get the feel for when they are going to stop. I usually jump off the ledge, right before they stop, and land as the last car passes. Then I just tap run, and make it as fast as I can. Sometimes you have to find a place to stay and wait a bit, just so you can avoid being hit by the racers. It takes a while to get it down pat, but after you have it, Its smooth sailing from there.

I love SSB as much as the next guy, but not enough to dish out $300+ just to play it (and if Revolution's like Gamecube, it'll end up paling in comparison to the PS3 and XBox2 in the long run).

The fact that Gamecube is less popular should have absolutely no bearing on how popular the Revolution will be, just as the crazy popularity of the N64 had no or at least very little effect on the popularity of the Cube.

I think making the disks normal size on the revolution will be a huge draw for all those pirates who like to steal games rather than pay full price for them. That is, IMO, a large part of why the PS2 and the Xbox hugely outdid the Cube. Rather pathetic really.

The real character to master in this game is Pichu. Anyone with that bad a handicap is hard to use properly.

DK and Bowser take a lot of good timing to use well. Since I like 'em, I tend to use them a lot. Bowser is definitely better, mostly due to the ranged attack option, but DK has some great smashes as well- although they've nerfed his up Smash a fair bit on the Cube.

If I'm thrashing a begginer player, I always opt to use DK as my 'handicap of choice'. The Irony is that he's great to use in a lot of the 1P modes.

Alright. Who doesn't absolutely love this game? Super Smash Bros. Melee is without a doubt the best party game (video game party game). It seems so childish at first, because I mean, c'mon, you couldn't PAY me to care about Pikachu outside of this thing. But then when you sat down for the first time and started playing, you realized that it was incredible...

Kids like it because it has characters they like and you fight each other. Parents like it because there is no blood, and the goal isn't to *kill* your opponent, but rather to knock them off the platform. (Which doesn't sound as non-violent the more you think about it.) And those of us in between like it because of the strategy, b/c up to four people can play, and although this is kind of vague, the fun factor just rocks.

It's enjoyed so much here @ the school I attend that we have the Oklahoma Christian University Smash Club. It's available every Friday night, so that since so many of us are so busy, if we can't make it to one Smash Night, we can make it to one of the next. It takes place in one of our student centers from 7m to whenever, so that you can come and go, and we play it on a projection screen, so it literally takes up an entire wall. (THAT's a LOT of fun.)

Anywho, in the spirit of the Smash, the guy who put all this together - a cool fella by the name of Charles Nordstrom - gave us the Seven Rules of Smash. It's a little list that he and his high school buds came up with, and it's so perfect for this game. I present the 7RoS:

The Seven Rules of Smash:
Rule # 1: Do not attack invincible opponents.
Rule # 2: Acid is bad.
Rule # 3: If you can do it you should.
Rule # 4: Keep the smash in the Smash.
Rule # 5: Link has only 1 boomerang.
Rule # 6: If you don’t have an item to throw at an enemy, use another enemy.
Rule # 7: If everyone gangs up on you, gang up on them.


The original #4 was something like "If you go in the Pokedoor, Pokemon WILL come out (and hurt you)." But in the GCN version (why is it not called NGC?), there IS no Pokedoor, so it got changed. The new #4 came about because during one game last year, one of the guys said something indecent, so I smacked him upside the back of his head - out of sarcasm rather than actually wanting to start a physical fight - and Charles said, "Whoa, David. Let's keep the smash in the Smash." I begged him to add it and change it to the Eight Rules of Smash, but he explained that the list was set at seven since that's what it had been for years. He eventually collaborated with me (collaborated, not compromised) and replaced the defunked #4.

As it turns out, Rule #1 seems so obvious, but MAN, do people overlook this more than anything...

Anywho, discuss. Anyone got anything to add? At the very LEAST, if you are a fan, chime in and say so.

You guys done with the spamming yet? I have a couple of major q's I'm hoping someone can help me with.

First, how in the heck am I supposed to beat both Master Hand and Crazy Hand with just one life (Event 50). It's making me nuts. Any tactical advice would be appreciated.

Secondly....what's the best way to hit the Sandbag far enough to get that level it unlocks? Best I've managed was using Roy to smash it straight up into the air a few times, and then charge up his B move (and not use the Bat at all). Got it an amazing distance doing that, but still seems to be just a little short of what's required.

The anwrwer to both questions in Yoshi.

For the hands, deal with Crazy hand first. Jump up with Yoshi and use his down A attack. (He should look like he is running in the air) Repeat untill hand is dead, then do the same to Master hand.

For the Sanbag, it's all about timing. As soon as it starts, turn around and grab the bat. Then use the same attack. (In air down A). Everytime you attack the bag it should do about 25%. Do this untill you don't have time to do it again, then smash the bag with the bat. This might take a few tries to get right.

Actually, you've just got to learn the hands moves. You will be able to see what he's going to do before he does it. He gives you some slight warning. Just play him enough times.


As for the sandbag, I also used Roy. I just knocked him up 3 times, which he flies up extremely high the third time. Then charge, and hit the bag before it touches the ground. If you can do it about the same lvl as your sword, then you will get extremely far, and unlock the lvl. It just takes a bit of practice, just like the hand.

I tried Pikachu, and the problem is that while you're doing the lightning, you're just sitting on the ground waiting to get hit. I find the ones with good air moves are best.

I'll give Young Link a go, but I've never been a big Link fan. I mean, he's awesome, but using him always feels a bit like using Firelord or a Paramedic in clix. I don't care for the character, so obviously I'm just using him for the cheese-factor.

As for Yoshi, I still can't do his Down A run-in-the-air move consistently. I get it about half the time (not enough to damage the bag enough). I'll try him, but I don't like him much.

Crazy hand is less predictable. Once he's gone, Master hand is a piece of cake because it's easier to tell what he will do.

Just letting everyone know that this is STILL the best game ever!

It has indeed been far too long since this thread saw some action.

My friends and I have just invented a new Smash tournament system:

3 Stock, with the levels on Ordered.

You get to choose your character and must stay with that character. However if yoi don't get at least 2 KOs in any given match then you lose access to that character, and have to use someone else.

The winner is the person who wins the most matches by the time you get through all the levels. It helps to have a pad and paper to keep track of this though.

Heaps of fun, especially when you are stuck choosing from a bunch of second rate characters.

I've recently come to see just how good Ganondorf is myself. A friend of mine who's always been a dedicated Captain Falcon specialist has started to use him fairly often latell, and he can certainly bring the pain, especially with that nasty elbow smash. His Up-B is very annoying as well. I tend to have trouble with him myself though.

I tend to prefer characters who are very good at getting back onto the level when knocked away. Every single one of mine are great at it, but otherwise they are quite diverse. If I want power, I use DK or Roy, if I want speed I use Fox or Peach, and if I just want to be annoying I use Picka. Jigglypuff makes the list because she's just fun, and can be devastatingly good on the right level.

Sheik is very good, but I wouldn't consider her cheese.

The closest to cheese I know of is Pickachu, and even he depends on which level you're playing on.

Link can definitely be used in a cheesy way though.

I agree with Link...but the biggest cheese is Yoshi. Very annoying to pin down if the user is skilled.

Is anyone here constantly plagued by Zelda's DISGUSTINGLY devastating drop kick?

It can be launched from anywhere at anytime, and its hard as hell to block.

Marth is my best defense so far, but its still a crapshoot.

I got this game a couple of months ago, although I need to take a break from it because I spent a few weekends trying to rack up as many VS matches as possible and I'm kinda burnt out. I think I have maybe 500 now.

I've never seen anyone using Zelda's kick either. Most people I know that use almost always switch her to Shiek immediately. I prefer Zelda myself, so I'll definitely be checking that one out. Thanks bro!

Hey, my guys and I have come up with a new Tournament style which is pretty fun. We call it the "Top 5" tournament. Basically you start by picking your top 5 best characters. Then you play (we use 3 stock) and each person chooses one of their 5 to use. If you win either by Survival or KOs, then you keep that character, but otherwise you lose that one and you're down to 4 characters only. Once you've lost all 5 characters, you are eliminated from the tourney. Keep going until only one survives!

It's lots of fun. We are also keeping score of our tounrey wins in a clever way. All of us started on 9 handicap, and each time you win a tourney you go down one in handicap. I'm currently the only one on 5, there's a couple of guys on 6 and 7, and a bunch still on 8 and 9. I tell ya, it's really forced me to upgrade my skills. Plus I'm relying on items a lot more thesedays as well.

So who would your top 5 be? My current 5 is:

1. DK
2. Fox
3. Peach
4. Roy
5. Interchangeable....at the moment it's Capt. Falcon (I need his power on the lower handicap), but sometimes I use Pkiachu or JigglyPuff instead.

Basically all i use, the fastest in the game. If i use Fox, and i am like serious, i am unbeatable. This is the one game i go undefeated in with fox. But there are those games where your like "ok time to have fun with friends...........SUICIDE TIME!" So when you nail the person with a super kick off the edge of a board, they think there safe until you see fox flying down with a 'bomb bomb' in his hand and throwing it at you! That is the best move in the game! Dont' you guys agree?

I usually go with number 5 though to have a little more fun. For some reason I tend to do really well with Mario though. Marth is just a beast though, I usually only use him when I don't want to fool around and just smack the heck out of someone.
