Fighting Game TOC Nomination Thread [Archive]

Taking DTM's suggestion, I am holding a fighting videogame TOC as a sort of test run for the future video game TOC. Now, I want you guys to help me figure out the players.
This will be a mini TOC, so only 16 characters per weight class. I will also be looking for tournament environments.

The restrictions for nominations are (1) They must be fighting game original characters (so no Marvel Superheroes, Smash Bros., etc.) and (2) There can only be 2 characters per game series per weight class[However, Street Fighter 2, 3 and Alpha are considered different series] .

Also, while I am open to all possibilities, I'd prefer nominated characters be from these game series (because they would work the best):

Well, we've got a DS junkie, so I'll show my colours.

LW: Chipp Zanuff
MW: Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear X2 style), naturally using Thunderseal
HW: Dizzy & Testament (both Guilty Gear XX style)
SHW: Justice (Guilty Gear series)

I thought we were keeping super moves, used appropriately and getting rid of "plot device" abilities (like Destroyers, Dizzy's Wings of Light, Ky can't "open" Thunderseal etc).

Important question too, for the HW especially. Are the competitors aware of the results of other matches, it's really relevant considering my nominees for the HW.

Hmm...didn't know we could nominate two per category. If so, I'd like to make a second batch of noms...(I'm passing on a SHW nomination as, frankly I can't think of one...and yes, all of my noms are Darkstalkers again...I admit I'm jonesing for the new PS2 release coming out next month :) )

the whole reason i ranked her as a mw is the fact that in a toc full of 2d characters she's a 3d sidestep machine.

i guess we're not going by actual game mechanics.

Ok my turn and I hope this works:

LW- Lubu (Dynasty Warriors Vs. Mode)

Its a great thing Sephiroth was in a fighting game so i could nominate him.

But i have a question: Just how do you divide them by weight category if they all stand a fair chance of beating the other in a fighting game? I mean Spider-Man (MW) would be able to knock out Hulk (SHW) so there should be no such thing as weight classed right? Everyone has a fair chance depending on the player...

I think the weightclasses and abilities are determined by the characters backgrounds mostly. For example lets look at the Guilty Gear characters real quick:Chipp is primarily a background character, he isn't a scrub but isn't a main story hero, he's kind of like somebody like Blanca, or E.Honda. Ky is one of the main story characters he is functionally equivalent to Ryu. Testament was a mid-boss and Dizzy was one of the bosses, but generally assumed to be less dangerous than Justice, so characters like Sagat and M.Bison. Justice was a boss and in the story a world class threat, so someone like Shin Akuma. At least that's my take on it.

Along that vein why is Morrigan just a middle weight and Dimitri a heavy, they came of as essentially equally powerful. For that matter why is L.Raptor middle and Felicia and Jon light, I thought they wre about equal as well (in fact the only one with actual polished training is Jon). Maybe my take on it is wrong. Anyway here are some nominees:

Well, obviously I can't say how others are deciding their choices but the reasons I went with mine are based not just on their formal training but their "powers". Felicia and Jon, for example, are rather nasty fighters - and I admit as a werewolf, Jon could probably go into MW - but they're close range combatants. Compare that to someone like Ryu - MW - who's shooting out fireballs and I just didn't feel the "close-range fighters" (esp. compared to the characters in their own series) were quite in the same category unless they were immensely powerful (a'la Victor with his electrified golem body - I'd say he's HW). Morrigan isn't quite on the same level as Demetri - she's powerful but he's a ruler of Hell while she's just in line to inherit someday and thus - despite her "age" - I consider her fairly still in training and comparative to someone like Ryu (he's not still in training, really, but his experience vs. her raw power seemed like a fair match). Anakaris I figured would be a HW not just for his relative imperviousness but his sorcerous abilities. *shrugs* I'm definitely open for debate on these.

I'd personally put Morrigan at HW, Jon at MW (he's such a powerful close-in fighter he gets to MW).

I dont know many Fighting Game characters.... :(

If you eventually except non original fighting game characters (but are in official and some very cool fighting video games), my list would be:

LW - Captain America (MSH)

MW - Spider-Man (MSH)

HW - Juggernaut (MSH)

SHW - Thanos (MSH)

I cant help it, Marvel Super Heroes for the PS1 was the first game I ever bought and I LOVED IT. Anyone has one theyd like to sell, please contact me as I gave it away before I moved here to NZ and now I want it back. :)

Well, seeing as though this is based more on a traditional martial arts tournament, I'd say they do.

Yep, I anticipated this. Unfortunately, while he was in a fighting game, he did not originate in a fighting game, and thus, doesn't count. Don't worry, if plans unfold nicely, you'll definetly be seeing this guy in my next tournament.

Actually, it's more of a action game/beat-'em-up. Sorry, doesn't work. Besides, would it really be all that fun haveing Batman clean up his entire weight class?

Again, not a fighting game. But, still, keep that one in mind for the next one...

what about primal rage characters?
While I am open, there are lines I will not cross. This is one of them. The other lines are War Gods, Eternal Champions, Tao Feng, and Kakuto Chojin.

Sorta, but he unbinds his arm for supermoves anyway and does seem to be roughly Akuma class, and we're not exactly drowning in SHW dudes.

Plus, the time he fought Ryu was SF3 Ryu when Ryu was a HW (said to be at the level of the Dark Hadou, without the Dark Hadou) and won decisively.

Well my nomination for Reapermon must be valid, because he was an original video game character, created for the sole purpose of being the main boss in Digimon Rumble Arena 1. He never made any appearance anywhere else other than the game, so by that logic he would be a valid SHW. :)

Yea, pretty much. Most of them are MWs, just like most fighters of the Street Fighter series are LWs (with only the ones with Chi abilities or exceptional skills being MWs or better). The really skilled/dangerous/exceptional ones are HWs, but Voldo's a middle of the road fighter, I had the impression of. He's no Cervantes, who's a ghost, or Nightmare who has a magic blade, or Weapons Master who knows every weapons style there is.

Hmm... do you suppose Inferno would qualify as a SHW?

Copy plus a few super-moves, and the general Soul Caliber uberness (Nightmare can slaughter armies, after all, and Inferno is that plus the skills and weapons of the others and a bit more on top).

Slayer: A definite SHW. The guy cannot be killed by any of the characters in the game currently, except possibly Dizzy, in the unlikely event of her going all-out (which is a potential world ender). He can teleport at will, fly, is impossibly strong and very very smart. It has been hinted that he may in fact be more powerful than Justice was.

Zappa: Middleweight. I would've said lightweight, then I remembered that he does have Raou. He has no control over his inhabitants, but they are powerful.

Faust: Middleweight. He's effectively just a skilled lunatic with some weird abilities that no-one can really classify.

Oh, and throw Iori Yagami in with the MW please.

I would like to nominate Mutaro (spelling?) from Mortal Kombat 3. If I remember, (it's been a while since I played), he was resistant to magic, so I'd guess SHW, but I guess he could be a high end HW.

Motaro, I'd put him as a high-end HW, which is a full category. He'd get owned so fast in the SHW it's silly. Justice would blast him to smithereens with her nitro bombs, or rend him limb from limb with her claws. Shao Kahn would rip out his hammer, Slayer would #### him dry, Igniz would just pummel him, and Orochi's a lesser deity, so I doubt the Centauran Belt would protect him from that.

And I ask again, are competitors aware of the results of other matches? I ask this because it could be quite important to the HW especially.

Come on people, 2 more LW and MW, and 3 more SHW and we can get this show on the road!

Made some last minute changes. Switched Haohmaru with Genjuro (because Haohmaru is a little too similar to Mitsurugi), and Sub-Zero with Jin Kazama(because, well, after thinking about, the arguments Subby would've caused would be long and painful). Here's the first 2 terrains!

TERRAIN 1: Southtown (Fatal Fury, Garou: MOTW, The King of Fighters)
An entertainment strip, industrial area and of course, the docks abutting the industrial area. A train line runs through this section of the city, a large station near the strip and in the industrial region. Warehouses, shipping depots and the like are the order of the day in the industrial area, while the docks feature cranes and large access areas for trucks to unload from. The entertainment strip features live music venues and video arcades, its not exactly a classy area.

TERRAIN 2: The Sanctuary (Guilty Gear)
Its amazing what magic can do! This extradimensional area of static seasons and vast forests is a beautiful place. The four quarters of it enjoy an enternal season each, always idealized. Among the towering trees hang homes, walkways, temples and magical gates linking the different areas. Spirits and ghosts walk among the inhabitants, passing from one gate to another in silence.

Oh, one thing I just noticed- Despite having a non-sharp weapon, Maxi might be a MW. He killed Astaroth, the giant with the axe, and is fairly high-up amoung the non-supernatural Soul Caliber peeps. Possible replacement: Zack from Dead or Alive

Just to get this started soon, I'll contribute a terrain. Here's the one I could think of:

Terrain 3: Brazilian Rainforest(Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom Fighting Evolution)
The thick canopy darkens the whole area. Counless trees go on for miles in all directions. In the center of it all is a large river. The sounds of wildlife are in a constant loop, and some of them have even come out to view the upcoming clash.

I made the a few more terrains:

Terrain 4: Dojo(Street Fighter, Samurai Showdown, etc.)
A small house located in the middle of a cherry blossom forest. The colorful leafs fall, blowing in the gently wind and touching the ground in a beautiful fashion. This has the training grounds of fighters for many years, with the brick road lined on either side with lanterns leading to the home that they lived in.

Terrain 5: Pirate's Alcove(Soul Calibur 2)
A large cave near the shore of an island somewhere in the Pacific. A dock has been built inside, a majestic ship parked right beside it. Deep waters brimming with sea life are on all sides of the dock.

Terrain 6: Metro City Slums(Final Fight)
This area of abandoned buildings on he outskirts of town is the home of many a street gang, as you can tell by the various graffiti on the walls. The only purpose these streets serve is a connection to the subway. Littering the area are garbage cans and other junk.

Terrain 7: Military Installation(Street Fighter series, etc.)
An airstrip located somewhere in the Southwest surrounded by a chain-link fence. Huge stationary jets and hangers dot the entire complex. Normally bustling with activity, the area is now completely abandoned, a perfect place for a brawl.

Sorry, I spent most of the weekend at work, and wasn't able to post the others.

This one was on my list though!

Haunted Cheateau (Darkstalkers, with a touch of MK):
This creaky, labyrinthine mansion sits in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a wildly overgrown vineyard. Beneath the mansion rests a ratmaze of cold stone cellars/dungeon, with the occaisonal secret passageway.

Oh, and rather than the Slums (covered somewhat by the Southtown location), hows about...

Shopping Centre (Tekken 4)
This massive, multilayered building is a monument to modern consumerism, every kind of store is available here amidst walkways and escalators connecting each floor in myraid places. A sprawling food court sits at the middle of the ground floor, complete with fountain and concourse. A multilevel carpark sits adjacent to this complex.

Out of curiosity, are these battlefields populated? Figure it's something you might want to decide before the fights start as there are some characters that can get empowered via innocent bystanders - e.g.: M. Bison and his dark chi drains - while others like, say, Ryu are limited by having to avoid injuring anyone. Not saying that's bad - makes for more interesting fights - but it's probably better to figure now than when the issue comes up. :)
