SPOILERS
The character Josh played is known as the "Salesman". He's a hired killer. The first scene (which was filmed well before the movie by Rodriguez and made to show Frank Miller so Rodriguez could persuade Frank to let him make the movie) was a short story titled "The Customer is Always Right" and pretty much plays out in the book as in the film. He shows up, says some pretty words to the woman, kisses her and shoots her. As it turns out, it seems the woman "The Customer" paid him to kill her (at least that's what I see it as). This is indicated by the lines where he mention not knowing what she is running from and cashing her cheque in the morning.
As for the final scene (which I haven't seen in any of the books I've read) since we know that he's a contract killer and knows Becky's name, the reason he's there seems pretty obvious. And from Becky's reaction to him and her last words to her mother indicate she knows too. Becky's about to get what she deserves for her betrayal. But as to who is footing the bill this time (the girls of Old Town or maybe someone else), that might be another story.
Yeah, I got that impression from the story too...he was hired to kill her and will cash HER check...so she was so scared of running that she hired someone to end the chase for her...I also imagine the END scene was written for the movie.

The story at he begining is in "Bullets, Booze and Broads."
In the book "Big Fat Kill," Becky is gunned down in the alleyway along with the other Mafia thugs. I think the ending was written for the movie in order to bring the story full circle.
I have read a couple of the TPB's, but I hadn't read that one, and I didn't make it out when he said "I'll cash her cheque in the morning".
On the 60 minute interview they said that Millar was on board with the movie from day one (after he was told his books would be used as the script), that scene was shot and used to convince Bruce Willis to come on board, not Millar.

not according to the 11 min featureette that Rodriguez posted March 19, 2005: seen here (http://www.efavata.com/CBM/SinCity.htm) Rodriguez shot the scene then went to miller ....
drgnoftyr: I'm going by what Rodriguez and Millar said on 60 minutes. Millar was on board when Rodriguez told him no script (something Millar didn't want to write) and that video was shown to Willis, who paused it halfway through and said "I'm in".

Yep, everything I've read and heard (including a few interview clips on yahoo movies showing Miller and Rodriguez talking about it) indicated that Miller was reluctant for anyone to shoot the movie. It was only after Rodriguez filmed that scene and sent it to Miller that he got on board. They then decided to include it in the movie.
But I haven't seen the 60 minutes thing...

thats exactly what the 11 min trailer said things went down ... the actors however for the most part from what i've seen wanted to play any part given them ....
This is what Rodriguez, Millar and Willis said on 60 minutes.
Rodriguez talked to Millar, and Millar didnt' want to write and re-write a script until a studio said yes. Rodriguez said "no studio, and no script, we are going to use your books as teh scripts". Thats what got Millar to do it.
Both wanted to cast Willis as Hartigan (first lead they cast). They got the Hartnet scene and showed it to him, he paused it half way through and said he was in.
Thats how all 3 guys said it happened.
OK then Sluggo why would he then go lie to us and the good people of Yahoo.com in a later clip?
I just watched their version and it plays out very much as drgnoftyr and the others say.
I believe your just confused or misread something, because Frank Miller himself is contradicting your opinion of how it went down.

If that's what they said on 60 minutes then it seems their story has changed. Because if you watch the 11 minute clip on yahoo movies Miller, Rodriguez and Hartnett all say that Rodriguez was trying to convince Miller to give up the rights for the movie but Miller kept refusing. He was eventually convinced to go to Texas to watch Rodriguez film a test scene (which he asked Hartnett to help him out with) and after seeing that and probably being promised a co-director's position and script approval he agreed to let it go ahead.
I can see that clip being used after that to convince other actors and money pushers.
But I guess we're getting conflicting stories from Miller and Rodriguez so we may never know for sure the sequence.

Why are we debating this??? What else would we be doing? Work?
And Josh Hartnett was the Salesman, not the Employee.
I read through an article on CBS' website. The article does say that the test clip was made for Bruce Willis and does leave the exact sequence to how Miller was eventually convinced a little vague but they don't provide quotes from Miller or Rodriguez that confirm these details.
"Why are we debating this?"

I wouldn't put the blame on sluggo. I have a tendency to argue about useless stuff quite a lot more than I should.
