View Full Version : The Comics I'm Dropping Thread

This is a thread dedicated to the dropping of comic books that no longer interest a person, for what ever reason. Why start this thread? To give people a reasonable view of why people become disenchanted with certain comics. We focus too much on why we like titles, but never why we dislike titles.
I hope it stays respectful and that people respect each others opinions without the grief that some mebers like to give others.
For me, the current titles are on the block:
The Flash: Johns run ends with 225 (IIRC), and so will my subscription. Not so much because of who the follow up writer is, but rather because Johns peaked my interest in the character to the point, that it became one of my favorite books. I could see the disappointment happening, if anything that Johns established was reworked by a new writer. I also see this as an opportunity to pick some thing new up, and branch out. I have had 3 years of great Flash stories. It's time to move on for Geoff and me as well.
Superman/Batman: Loeb's run has soured on me. He started out with a bang, and has ended it with a resounding thud. The Supergirl arc was good IMHO, and was the last thing that was good. He's leaving the book soon though, and just like Flash, it just seems like a good time for me to jump ship and find something else.
X-Men: Morrison got criticized for the stff that he did to the members and the team. But everything since he left, has been mediocre at best, and in most cases terrible. Austen's grotesque run (though I liked the Brotherhood arc), has been followed by and equally disappointing Milligan run.
Books that have been cut:
The Punisher: There's only so much violence that I can take without a quality story to back it up. I dropped this after the Mother Russia arc (which was good IMHO) but by then I had already made my mind up.
Firestorm: I liked what Jolley did, and I liked Jason as a different version of Firestorm. Since I know that Ronnie will eventually take full control again, and Jason will be pushed out of the picture, I dropped it after Jolley's final issue. I'll wait till he returns to the JLA, to follow Firestorm around again.
Conan: I thought this book lost it's steam over the last two arcs, and didn't engage me as much as it had in the beginning. The stories were readable, but the quality had declined. May have something to do with Buisek's health, since it caused him to drop JLA, after the CSA arc.
Books I'm looking to pick up:
The Defenders: Giffen and DeMatties receive alot of praise for their JLA/JLI run, though frankly Guy Gardner turned me off of that series. And I like the cult classic characters of the team. So I look forward to this one.
All-Star Batman & Robin/Superman/Justice: Whether or not these are "Ultimate" stories or not, I llok forward to all of them. My only disappointment so far is that Justice is a 2 year, bi-monthly 12 issue limited series.
Wolverine: Millar is one of Marvel's greatest writers and I like his work, so I might hook on to this at some point.
1602 II: I was disappointed with the ending of the last series, but since the premise behind the story is awesome, and since it's a different writer, I'm going to give it a shot.
Birds of Prey: I'm not into the characters as much as I ma into gail Simone's writing. But her two issues of Action Comics, have done Superman some much needed justice..so this one is a strong possibility for me.
Other than the Defenders and the All-Star books, the rest are ones I'm mulling over, as I'm also considering cutting my comic budget down some. We'll see.

With sadness, I must say that I will be dropping all of my books at the end of July. I'm moving away to go to school.
Go with Birds of Prey. It's an awesome book.

Yeah, I remember when you first stated that. But in your case, the one negative will be made up with the more positive. ;)

I bought the recent issue where Wildcat and Dinah go to Japan, so my wife could read it, and while she didn't even read it, I found it intruiguing. So we'll see.
I also forgot to add JSA:Classified to my list of future books. I belive the first arc deals with the definitive origin of Power Girl!

I dropped Conan and The Punisher as well, both had a strong start but lost most of their steam by around issue 10 for both. Saperman/Batman has almost lost me, which is sad because the first ones i read were so good (the Supergirl arc).

I'm almost done with Ultimate Spider-Man.
There is only so much repetition in storylines that I can take, and this book boils down to Peter angsts, he fights with Mary Jane because of the angst, his friend turns into a super-villain which causes him more angst, he beats up his friend, and then gets back together with Mary Jane. That's it. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I can't think of anything redeeming about Ultimate Iron Man or Ultimate Nightmare/Secret so far.
I'm starting to lose interest in Superman/Batman, as well. The stories there, lately, have been below mediocre (though, I'm loving the current one where the heroes take on the rip-off Ultimates). But, this is a case where an author leaving a book may actually make it better. I'll give it one arc after Leob goes and then see what I think.
I haven't been terribly impressed with JLA for a long while (with the Claremont/Byrne story 'The Tenth Circle' being an all-time low), but I'm enjoying the Crisis tie-in going on right now.
I might drop Flash after Johns leaves. We'll see how the next writer does.
I'm not planning on continuing to pick up Green Lantern after the first arc, but we'll see. I hate Hal Jordan, so I'm considering the Green Lantern Corps book as an alternative.
JLA: Classified needs to get better or I'm done. The one good story arc they've had so far is the 'Super Buddies' arc, and I'm not a fan of hardly any of those characters (though, the odd thing is, I'm actually liking the 'dead' characters more than the ones who remain post Identity/Infinite Crisis).
So, there are a few books I'm considering dropping. Though, I'm struggling with my completist nature to get them off of my pull lists ... I must have complete runs, you know.

As soon as Alan Davis is done with Uncanny X-Men so am I. The same goes for Marm Millar and Wolverine. I've gotten loyal to writters (Davis is a fine co-plotter)in my old age.

Millar is leaving Woverine? Bummer, maybe I won't be picking that up after all! :ermm:
Any idea when?

I haven't a clue as to when Millar is leaving but one must assume it will happen eventually. Davis is done in a couple of issues.

Well if it's soon (within the next six months or so) I might have to pass.

They'll release the current storylines in TPB. Get them! It has been pretty good.
I just dropped X-Men. I was only getting it for Peter Milligan, but his first story arc stunk the place up real bad. I'll just wait until he gets another gig at Vertigo I guess.
I'm dropping Flash after Johns leaves. I needed to purge a few titles and the change in teams comes at just the right (wrong?) time to justify letting that one go.
I dropped Hawkamn recently. I just wasn't enjoying the new Creative team (and I've always been more of a silver-age Katar fan anyway)
Despite the recent announcement that it's moving to another publisher, I'm still not interested enough to keep following Fallen Angel.
And finally, Aquaman's really on a thin line. Despite a promising arc with Ocean Master, the story's really taken a huge slowdown, and the two issue fill-in really didn't help things much.
If I didn't have a nearly full run, I would have dropped JLA a LONG time ago. There are several Joe Kelly issues that I didn't even bother reading.
Other than that, my list is safe for now. I enjoy all the books I'm getting.
Why, I'm even thinking of adding Fantastic Four to my pull list!

I wanted to add FF to my list after the Rising Storm story Arc, but Waid left and JMS was set to take over an arc or two later.
As with Bendis, I'm not much of a JMS fan.

Before or after their crossover adventure with the Ultimate versions of themselves?

I dumped Uncanny X-Men. Claremont has lost all appeal to me these days.
Don't you like confident/cocky characters?
Batman, yes.
Hal Jordan, no. I've never liked Hal. The only time I had even the slightest bit of respect for him was when he died to save the world, and then came back as Spectre.

I'm new to Hal, and I love him! I can relate to a character that doesn't know how to quit . . .
See, for me, it's not that he doesn't know how to quit, it's that I don't like how he's written.
Kyle seemed like a 'real guy' who had problems and happened to have a fancy power ring and huge universal responsibilities.
Hal, on the other hand, seems like a jerk who I wouldn't hang around with in real life, with a god complex, who's now forced out several of the characters that I did like in order to be put back into 'hero' status, where he has no place being.
Whether he was being 'controlled' by Parallax or not, he still slaughtered the entire Green Lantern Corps. That, right there, is enough that he shouldn't have his ring anymore.
Further, he terrorized the universe for a while as Parallax.
He sacrificed himself to help atone for his past sins. Great.
Then, he did some time as Spectre, where he again went a little nuts and started slaughtering people before eventually splitting with the Spectre and returning from the grave.
So, what do we have? A 'hero' who has a tendency to go nuts and slaughter lots of people who now has asserted himself as leader of one of the groups he previously killed every member of, and has again donned a weapon of near-infinite power.
He has no business being a 'hero' again. He has no business being anything but dead. And, the fact that DC bent over for a contingent of loud, whiny fans and foisted all of this 'Hal is back and he's good again' #### on us doesn't sit well with me.

Fair enough. I don't see it that way, but different strokes. Did you see "Flight" from GL Secret Files & Origins?
Nah, I tend to avoid the Secret Files and Origins stuff. Most of the time, it's just a way for DC Comics to take another $5.00 out of my pocket.

"Flight" is an excellent Johns story about Jordan bonding with Rayner . . .
I dropped Ultimate Spiderman after the Hobgoblin story arc. As others have stated, I felt that I was reading the same story over and over again. The reasons I initially liked Ult. Spidey are the same reasons that I don't like him now. There is very little difference between what is being done now and what was happening in the first arc.
JLA also was dropped. I picked it up for about 20 issues after reading several Trade paperbacks that I really enjoyed. Unfortuneately, I was extremely disappointed with what I had been reading. The "Tenth Circle" story was terrible, especially considering that they were building towards issue 100. I'll pick up the trades that look interesting.
I've wanted to pick up JSA and All-Star Batman and Robin, but I'm headed back to school soon, so I need to limit my books.

I'll be dropping New Avengers, Iron Man, and Astonishing Xmen. Comics just cost to much anymore. At or near 3 dollars a pop per comic is rediculous. The first arc in Astonishing was good, and then issue 7 where they fight the Mole Man monster was classic ("I like beer."), but past that it's kind of 'eh. I don't like beat looking like a cat now, and am not crazy about Emma Frost.
New Avengers seems hit or miss. One issue seems great, the next blah. I'll finish off at issue 6, but then probably no more for me.
Iron Man is just to slow. The fight with the Extremis super soldier was fantastic, the rest is gouge your eyes out boring. I also don't care with the re-write of Tony's history. He's a comic character, the ammount of time that has passed doesn't have to make any sense. Putting him into Desert Storm kind of ruins him (since he was originally the all American anti commie hero, it pretty much ruins his old stuff).
I'll stay with Conan, Captain America, Thunderbolts, and JSA.
Thunderbolts is fun, and different. Not as good as the New Invaders was, but the art is better, and it's still a great team book with a lot of likeable characters (I liked most of them as villians, so it's fun to see them on a regular basis trying to reform).
Captain America has been pretty good so far. Brubaker hasn't malfed him up yet (like they tried to do in his last volume where he fought the clone troopers, and attempted to make it out like our 'evil government' had done all this carp to him, gad that was horrific and stupid), and this story looks promising.
Conan still has the best artwork of any book on the market, and Busiek does a good job reflecting a lot of Robert E. Howard's take on things.
JSA is another good team book, the new 'Black Reign 2' story looks promising.
I'll probably see Rann/Thanagar war through (although it's not as good as Andy Diggle's Adam Strange mini-series, the art and writing in it were jaw dropping), and probably continue to read Ultimates 2.
Man, I have been repeatedly told that Ultimate Spidey is good, and that the writer is top notch!
Ultimate Spidey is good, just not after the same stories over 75+ issues. I started by reading the TPBs and then added to my pulls. I initially really like the dialogue because I felt it was different and intelligent. However, it now feels like the same stories over and over again: Spidey feels guilty about something, adds strain to his relationships with May/MJ/Gwen, considers not being Spiderman, guest stars Nick Fury/Ultimates, fixes relationships and doesn't quit. Rinse and repeat.

Do I sense a bit of sarcasm in that statement? I think Bendis is soo busy writing ALL his other books, maybe he lets one of his buddies write that one. Its horrible.
I had to drop JLA, i absolutely hate claremont as a writter. too wordy, to sci-fi, to confusing and boring.
x-men has become really bad, aside from astonishing x-men.
superman got dropped after the last arc as well.
love anything ultimate though, although ult x-men's longshot arc wasn't very good.

BTW, in an effort to save more money, I have now decided to drop Green Lantern, after the first arc as well. I'm sure Johns will do a great job with Hal, but he's not a favorite character of mine..and therefore gets the proverbial axe!
