On July 20, 2005, actor James Doohan, known for his role as "Scotty" on Star Trek, died at the age of 85. In accordance with his Last Will and Testament, Mr. Doohan will be cremated and his remains will be launched into space where he will join Star Trek creaor Gene Roddenberry and fellow writers of the show in the infinite void his character called home.
His family and friends are in our thoughts during this most difficult time.
Rest in Peace, Scotty.

Well, had it not been for thisthread I would not have known that his ashes will be scattered in space... so, my answer to your question is Yes, yes it was needed.

Besides it's Scotty, Scotty was cool, and if you read the books, he did the best on the Kobayashi Marou.... Even better than Kirk! :p
