View Full Version : Need advice for one level of X-Men Legends

I'm at the point in "X-Men Legends" where the X-Men have been teleported to the Brotherhood's secret base via Gateway. (This is the location full of lava and narrow rock walkways.)

I've found the "Save" point and beaten the acolytes I've run into. Then a little further on, I run into Avalanche and Sabertooth.

They keep beating me. I have a feeling it shouldn't be that hard to take these two out, but I'm having a lot of trouble.

Can anyone suggest a particular combination of characters I should use or a particular tactic? I've already done a couple of danger room scenarios to stock up on health packs and energy packs and I've leveled all my characters up to about level 19 0r 20, but I still keep losing. I'd really like to just take these guys out and move on. Consistently taking four X-Men to their doom against a couple of minor-league evil mutants is getting embarassing.

Well I don't know of anyone better than anyone else. I used Iceman, Wolverine (of course) Cyclops and Nightcrawler. Focus on Avalanche because Sabertooth comes back from the dead (man, that made me so mad!)

Well, that sounds like good advice.

BUT... Can I trust advice from my arch-enemy? :ermm:

Well in that case, stay as close to the edge of the rock formation Avalanche is on. This will make sure his attack will not knock you into the lava killing you immediately! :cheeky:

Also you can begin to time Avalanche's attacks. He'll invariably knock you bck with a quake, but when he does and you move back in with your close combat fighter, whoever that may be, do a little zig zag and dodge the fissure he sends at you, or you'll wind up encase in his little stone prison. If you dodge it once, then you should have a couple of seconds of free time to wail on him up close. Nightcrawler as some one mentioned, is good, because he can teleport back to Av after the knockback. This is also one of the few good levels to use Rogue's absorption. Suck Sabretooth's power and use it on Avalanche for a lot of damage.

I'll have to do another few danger room sessions to practice with Rogue. I've had her on the team a few times, but I usually left her on automatic while I controlled some of the others.

I used Emma Frost on the team for the first time other than that Astral Plane adventure. I loved using her Fear attack to make acolytes run off the cliff edges into the lava. I'll have to see if either Avalanche or Sabertooth have any mental resistance--she might be a good one for this fight if they don't.

These two are probably the hardest boss battle in the game, save for the final fight. Each of them is resistant to something (I think Sabretooth is Physical Resistant and Avalanche is Energy Resistant), so have one good Energy character on your team and one good Physical one. I seem to recall using Cyclops and Jean Grey a lot.

I remember i beat avalanche pretty easy with my suped up wolverine/colossus. sabertooth can by messed up with cylops fairly easily.

One of the first thing Avalanche tells you here is something along the lines "you Don't seem to realize that YOU CAN'T BEAT ME!"

Now I am severely lacking in the video game mastery department, so maybe the other posters found a way to beat them, but as for me, right before I finished them off, they ran off and escaped through the transporter and then I would continue on to the next level. I did this through the cheesy way of out running Sabertooth with Wolverine until Logan powered back up again. Then I would attack Avalanche again until I would get injured then I would start lapping again and continue the process until they took me to the next level. Its lame I know, but it got me there.

Yes by "beating them" we actually meant "running them off". There is no way to actually defeat them in the sense of keeping them from escaping.

Kalel21

I'm perfectly happy with just "running them off" as long as I can beat them.

I haven't had a chance to try again yet, but I'll give it a try again this weekend. If all else fails, I have no problem with using the suggestion to have Wolverine "outlap" Sabertooth until he powers up again. I'll try some of the different team combinations/tactics suggested here and see what works for me.

Is that level before the Astral Plane ####? Because if it is, you have to fight a dark version of Avalanche later that made me want to pull my hair out and weep, Biblical-style.

Really though, you should just avoid fighting Sabretooth altogether. Sic your allies on him to tie him up and use your main brawler on Av.

Alternatively, if you just can't win, a little time spent in the Danger Room levelling up goes a long way.

I beat 'em this past weekend by (as several of you suggested) running away from Sabertooth while blasting away at Avalanche. I used Cyclops.

I kept at it for several hours and got through the Juggernaut attacking Muir Island fight; the saving Morlocks from GRSO soldiers fight, and the stopping Sentinals in NYC scenario.

Then I went to the next Astral Plane level and managed to figure out how to beat each of the three sub-levels fairly quickly. Then Shadow King just runs off with Professor X and I didn't get to rescue him regardless. AAAAARGH!!!!!

Then I went to the Sentinal Factory level. I'm down to the point where I'm supposed to be rescuing Morlocks and getting them to Gateway to escape. When I quit, it was just after I ran into a force field wall where the pillors I have to wreck to shut it down are on the other side of the field. When I get back to the game, I have to figure out if Storm can blast the pillors from the other side of the force field with her lightning blasts, OR if Nightcrawler can Bamf to the other side (Can he carry someone else with him when he teleports?); OR if I just missed a turn somewhere and ended up on the wrong side of the force field.

Or, of course, that there's yet another obvious solution that I'm just not seeing yet. After trashing dozens of Sentinals and countless soldiers to get to this part of the Factory level, it's annoyingly ironic to be stopped by a mere force field.

I love that part. "Oh noes! He took the Professor! Lets go do something else."

Nightcrawler can carry someone if he reguarl BAMFS straight at them. He'll grab 'em and carry 'em.

All of the forcefields can either be shut down OR gotten around. You may have to nuke a wall or something in another room.

What I kept thinking as I went through the five or six levels before this was "Okay, they've got this Astral Gate thing--why aren't they going after the Professor right away?" Then in one of the interludes where you just take Magma around the mansion talking to various X-Men, she encounters Beast in his lab, where he'd got the Gate set up. She asks him what it is, then suggests it could be used to rescue the Professor. Beast blurts out "What a brilliant idea, Alison!" or words to that effect. Apparently, it had not occured to any of the highly experienced superheroes that they could use the machine that takes them to the Astral Plane to rescue someone being held prisoner on the Astral Plane.

I don't want to make too much fun, because this is a good game with a good storyline. But that part did make me mutter "It's about time you thought of that, you moronic mutants!"

Turns out all you have to do is fly over the force field: a solution so simple I went through a number of more "clever" plans before I finally stumbled across it.

Anyway, I've spent far too much time with this game over the last couple of days and I got to the final battle---where I promptly got wiped out and New York was destroyed. (Where the heck are the Avengers when you really need them?)

So I stayed at the last save point you reach before reaching the last level and just kept repeating a Danger Room scenerio (making sure I never won it, so that it would continue to produce goodies for me to find.) I'm now stocked up with the maximum number of health packs and energy packs--every X-Man is at full health--and I've got around 38,000 tech points; enough purchase at least 11 resurrections of KO'd X-Men. I'll try again this weekend and if I don't save the world this time, then I'm obviously not cut out for the hero business. :ermm:

Man, reading how you enjoyed playing those rounds makes me eager to see the Legends II. I hope it is as good as this one was. And YES, I AM STILL PLUGGING TO GET AN AVENGERS LEGENDS GAME CREATED!

If the animated movie does well you could just get your wish. I'd buy it.

That thought occurred to me too. And I think I would be willing to put aside my biases against the Ultimates to buy it for that reason.

And you should. Legends character designs are based on Ultimate X-Men but they used 616 history. Its all good.

I couldn't resist--I was too close to the end to wait until the weekend so I spent another 90 minutes on the game last night.

I was lucky in that I had found a piece of equipment in one of my last danger room sessions that allowed a character to use his mutant power without using any energy. I gave this to Cyclops, then marched off to the final battle.

I needed most of the tech points I had hoarded, since I had to resurrect Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm and Colossus several times each. But I battered through all the bad guys, fairly quickly figured out how to do away with Master Mold's invulnerability and saved New York in one fell swoop. Cyclops' ability to keep zapping away at everyone without ever having to re-energize was very, very handy.

So I did indeed save the world from horror, death and suffering. Everyone owes me a dollar.

I can finally go back to reading books in my spare time.

It's too bad you didn't beat it before the sequel was announced. The ending was a GREAT suprise if you didn't go in knowing who the next villian would be. :)

The one thing I found out (the hard way) is there is no real point on maxing out the characters. I was hoping that i could use them in the skirmish as level 45's...

All for not :(

Just a good tactic I've found effective is simply to make some friends :) and get them to play it with you. Four players who are okay at X-men legends are generally more effective than one really good player having to order around 3 AIs. With the four players working together well, bosses such as Avalanche and Sabretooth weren't too much of a problem.

Master Mold still blew, though.

I concur. And if you play with people that have more patience with the game than "We've been playing for 5 minutes, and this game is slow...." and don't have any players who "Wait, is there anything else in this room I can smash?", it can be even more fun. Having Cyclops actually back you up worth a damn and having Wolvie take the front line worth a damn is SOOOOO valuable.

And taking the time to bring Colossus up is worth it, believe me :) I used his charge every now and then in multiplay, and the other players would always go "Why is the screen shaking? Oh God....." And Colossus + Knockback Attack = people flying across the screen all game.

Colossus' hand-clap attack, when powered up, in invaluable against large groups of enemies. There's one Danger Room training disc where you have to defend the Professor from those astral demons for a set period of time. I eventually beat it by having Colossus stand in front of him and just clap them to death in huge piles. T'was a glorious day indeed.

When I do this mission, I usually have beaten Qualifying Exam 400 (found in the second Morlock Sewers mission). Astral Fury gives you ginormous experience and because the Exam is a little difficult you can try it over and over again to level people up a lot. The team I would use if it's really difficult would be Jean Grey for Psychic Scream, Cyclops and Storm for added combo damage from Leadership and one physical person (probably Colossus) for some close up hurtin'. This mission ends as soon as you beat Avalanche, so ignore Sabretooth as much as possible. Don't forget they're both mutants, and the X-Cutioner Hood will deal added damage to either one.

I'm sorry I didn't read your Sentinel Factory problem. Just fire powers at the pillars, because Nightcrawler can't BAMF in, just like Gateway can't portal out. If it's not taking enough damage an X-Treme may be needed.
