That's offical. The 'core' set is $299 and the full deal is $399. The difference? The core set lacks wireless controllers and a hard drive. The full set has wireless controllers, a 20GB (I believe) hard drive, wireless head set, and a bunch of other goodies.
Bottom line is that the $299 set is a waste. Anyone who doesn't just save up the extra $100 for the full package is an idiot.
However, the biggest part of this announcement is what it means for the other next-gen consoles. If the Xbox is launching at $399 for the real deal, then I think we can expect the PS3 to launch at at LEAST that.
I think this may be the first year that I don't buy a console at launch. I'm sure Battlefront II, Castlevania, and From Russia With Love will keep my PS2 fresh well past the launch of PS3...

I think I'll probably pick up a 360 at launch. Especially if Elder Scrolls 4 makes it out for the launch. And with the delay of the new Zelda, there's a big blank spot in my winter gaming schedule.
It's gonna be tough to pick this up at launch, because Armor Wars launches pretty much the same time. That's a lot of money to spend in one month. But I'm gonna be saving pennies to make it work :)
I think the way that Microsoft is setting up the xbox will work great in the long term. The hardcore Game player will go with the Playstation. The Xbox is looking toward the family, where it will act as a web browser and allow people to play simple online MSN type games. This would be great if your a kid trying to get your parents to buy a consule, older parents will love the MSN games or card type games and I think I heard those will be provided for free with a purchase of the full package.
But I will stick with my special Xbox untill they stop makeing good games for it.
I agree the 399 dollar is the way to go, but I won't be buying it. Thanks to the announcement of a new Smash Bros. game with the Revolution, THAT will be the console I buy upon release. ;)

Considering you may have a year between the releases, cmon, go get a 360. There's nothing wrong with having two consoles.

All the 360's are sold out here so we put in an order for a 'priority pack' at the local FYE for $600. It comes with everything the $400 package comes with and also 2 games of you choice ($59.99 or less), An additional wireless controller, and a faceplate. There were 1-2 other addes goodies too. Great deal.
