View Full Version : Which comics should I read?
I've been away from western comics for a while I want to read some good comics and have $35 worth of Amazon gift certificates to blow. Which comics should I get? Try to mention ones that I could get on Amazon.
I've already read some Sandman.
I'm thinking Kingdom Come looks good. Marvels also looks good, but pricey. Probably some Bizarro comics (though I've already read Bizarro World).
After that maybe a humorous one like GLA, or on the other hand maybe a serious one like the Watchmen.
Any other suggestions?
And I'll probably round it out with "Everything Can Be Beaten"
Excalibur: Mojo Mayhem is fun.
The Nail is powerful storytelling.
Squadron Supreme is a rather nice tail.
Thanks K-ness! Unfortunately none of those titles are in print on Amazon anymore. But you've given me some comics to keep my eye out for.
Astro City is FABULOUS, and I'm pretty sure it's still in print.
Kingdom Come is great, though you'll appriciate all the easter eggs in it more if you brush up on your "obscure DC characters" first.
Marvels, also, is great; there should be a cheeper paperback version and a more expensive hardcover 10th anniversiry version.
JSA is great, and I think the trades are still in print.
Bruce Wayne: Murderer?, Bruce Wayne: Fugitive part 1, and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive part 2 are a great arc. Part three is good, but I not wholely neccesary to the arc as a whole. However, if you've been readin OMAC project lately, you'll notice some stuff...
The Ultimate Spiderman and Ultimate X-Men trades are cheap and a good read. Not the most fabulous read out there, but they're both consistantly good.
Ultimates 1 is great, but trust me that you'll want to get the whole run.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I don't read much regular-continuity Marvel, so I don't know any good trades from there offhand. If you have any questions or anything, just let me know.
P.S. - I've got to agree with the suggestion of "The Nail" and "Another Nail" - they're a fab elseworlds story exploring a world without Superman (or is it?). I haven't read either Excalibur or Squadron Supreme.
I'm currently reading JSA, which has most of its issues in TPB form, and eagerly awaiting the next TPB of Y: The Last Man, which is probably going to be a while coming. Either one of those is worth picking up.
My favorite Marvel book is currently Exiles

I'll admit I'm a fan of the darker side of things but Empire was a great story. I just started picking up Supreme Powers and have been impressed. The Y The Last Man suggestion was also good.

There was a great series called Wanted put out by dark horse/top cow. I'm not sure if it was collected in trade or not but it's worth a read.
Doh! I got these suggestions a little late. I already ordered. But thanks!
If you want to know what I got:
Tales of the Bizarro World
Kingdom Come
Marvels
Watchmen
I also couldn't resist "Killing Joke" so I got it from an online merchant because it was oop on Amazon.
Oh and I have been brushing up on my obscure DC characters knowledge in anticipation of KC coming in the mail. I've been doing it mostly with Wikipedia and Whoclix which is better than nothing, I guess.

I think you will be most impressed with "Watchmen". I'm sorry I missed this thread earlier, or I would have suggested the first "Planetary" collection. Please let us know what you think of your reads.
They were all awesome! You are right about Watchmen, I couldn't put it down. My favorite was Marvels. Kingdom Come was good for the artwork (of course) and the development of character relationships but there was a little too much focus on wizz bang and introducing characters that you will never see again.
Tales of the Bizarro World was hillarious. I couldn't read it in one sitting as I felt my sanity leaking from me.
Strangely enough, "Killing Joke" never arrived.
