I know either DC or Marvel announced they were working on a MMORPG, but I don't know who it is. Do you?

Both have announced MMORPG projects, with DC being the most recent one. Marvel's will be a PC MMORPG, while DC is taking a slightly more optimistic approach (not necessarily a good thing) and talking about getting their MMORPG on the Xbox360 console.

I personally, would just like to know a couple of things; how would a DC or Marvel MMORPG work? Would you have players selecting heroes and villains from the respective universes freely? Would you have to work to unlock higher tiered characters or would it be a free-for-all character selection? I can't see the fun in there being hundreds of players playing characters like Superman, Hulk, Thor or Batman at the same time.

It'll be interesting to see how the system is implemented.

My guess is that they will be like City of Heros, but you get to interact with characters from the comics.

Hmmm, it had better be a dynamic character creation system then, if not, I might just stick to playing City of Heroes.

Didn't Marvel just announce one for the 360 as well? I just read an article about this, but I don't trust the info completely.

Personally, I think this speaks well of the 360's online capabilities.

The early word on both systems is that they will have a pool of characters to choose from with DC up to 2000 and Marvel with 5000, respectively. There will be various servers and when registered, a member can choose from the available characters within that server. Because there are so many characters and multiple servers, no one comic charcter will exist on the same server at the same time. So get registered early...first one on a server gets to choose Batman or whoever they want. This isn't definite but it's what some people are speculating about so far.

As aside, people sell Everquest and FFXI characters online all the time and some for $1K. Think how much Superman would go for.

Oh and Thawmus is right...Marvel cut a deal with Microsoft and put it on the Xbox 360.

honestly i think that sucks id much rather build my character from scratch like in coh than start out playing superman or worse having to start out with some unknown character with weak powers and not being able to improve them. i thoroughly enjoyed taking my weak defender that could heal like 20 hp to now being able to heal 420 hp and doing basically anything i want with her. thats the fun of rpgs not playing a god at the start. hell its boring once you reach 50 in coh for the most part. as soon as i hit it i started a new toon.
now if these have a nice character creation feature and you can interact with main characters and maybe eventually work your way up to being able to join the justice league or something like that i would go for that.
just my opinion

I totally agree with you. I play FFXI and I'm thinking about getting into CoH...the whole reason I play FFXI is so I can improve my character...quests make up like 5% of the time I'm online...it's exciting to see gradual change like that.

From what I just read in EGM, DC's is going to be on the PS3, and Marvel's is going to be on the 360. I dunno if either is going to be on the PC. Considering the amount of server space and organization it takes, not to mention that they won't interwork (as in, your PC player won't be able to interact in the same game world as the 360 player), I just can't see them releasing it on PC as well, regardless of how much more popular it might be as a result.

Got to say that sounds like wishful thinking you've picked up there. I'm thinking it'll be COH interacting with the characters from the appropriate universes, which is fine by me, I enjoy creating my own anyway. Hopefully char creation will be A LOT more open and customizable than COH, COH is too limited.

As for talk about them being on consoles, really? I have never heard of a major MMORPG doing that, sounds like a massive risk and kind of sucky to me :ermm:

Any links to hand around? Last I heard about the marvel game was that they were discussing making one 2 years ago, and all I saw about DC is that they're making it.

I'd like to have them on the PC, because I'm not buying any next-gen consels. I'd also love to see some links.

You've never heard of it, because it hasn't been feasible so far. So you would be correct in stating that this is a massive risk. However, if what we keep getting told is true, the 360 is going to have an AWESOME online system. I refuse to stay up-to-date on the PS3, however. I have some serious doubts there.

I'd like to have them on the 360, so that I can pay ONE subscription to play ALL the games online, instead of paying for each one. And if Xbox Live prices are any indication, it'll be 1/3 or 1/5 of the cost of a single monthly subscription to an MMORPG for the PC. If the PC gaming industry decided to try something that doesn't eat my wallet, I'd be all for it, but right now all I play is shooters like CS and strategy games like Starcraft, because they recognize that I paid for them.

Just a personal preference.
