So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?
Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:
DIE HARD
sKoEg6J-9bo
Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.
Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.
So, what say you all?
Next Film: ??????
What can we say about the film that spawned 1,000 sequels (even if only 2 were its own :) ) Seems like after Die Hard came out there was an "Everyman Hero In The Wrong Place Wrong Time Who Saves The Day" film out and about, though to me none equaled the one and only.
I remember when I first saw this film, I guess I was around 17 or so, and I enjoyed it so much my friend and I (he was also with me on the first night) saw it again the very next day. Bruce Willis was loads of fun to watch, and John McTeirnan, as usually, did a great job in directing this action pic. Not to mention Alan Rickman in one of my favorite roles for him, and one very nasty (and cool) villain.
Great action, Great story, and for the most part even Great acting (which isnt all too common in an action film) so overall Im going to say this film for me was, well GREAT. :p
While not a Classic like Jaws, Raiders or Star Wars this is one film I really very much enjoyed and could watch it over and over again. Overall, alot of fun.
My Rating 9.25 / 10

The main character is important in any film, and this one rules!
Lots of very cool action, and very re-watchable, which i like about films.
One of my favourite action films ever.
8.5 / 10.

I come onto this forum and see two movies mentioned on these threads...this one and Raiders...two of my favorite films ever. Both have two of the greatest movie heroes ever and some top tier villains as well. John McClane is classic. He's the action hero that you can actually relate to. If Arnold was playing him in that scene where a blood soaked John is tying that firehose around him, preparing to leap off of the building as it explodes, you'd be like "yeah, Arnold could do that." Bruce Willis is not as convincing but when he expresses out loud that he can't believe he's doing this, he quickly becomes more convincing and even relatable. Great writing for an action film.
My next big praise for Die Hard is of course Hans Gruber. In D&D Hans would be quintessentially "lawful evil"...a reasonable but diabolical thief leading a band of mostly crazed Kobolds. He doesn't necessarily care about his hostages but you can tell there are lines he won't cross...unlike his chaotic henchmen. You subtley get the impression that Hans has a strict moral code. That obviously plays against the stereotypes of archvillains in action movies but more than that, it makes you almost respect him...I always find myself sort of rooting for Hans but thinking in the end that he got what he deserved I suppose...he makes being a criminal tempting. Villains like that make the heroes even better...for fans of Die Hard, Hans has to be considered among the best all-time film villains.

Ho ho ho I got a machine gun.
Good movie, good one-liners. It did a good job of addressing the stereotypes in action films.
I'd give it an 8.5-its a good film, but not one the greatest.
Just for the record Die Hard is a 9.3 on my scale...it's my favorite Christmas movie ever.
Excellent write up again there, though for simplisiticies sake well limit our individual ratings to whole numbers and .5s, if you please. :) So Ill round this up to a 9.5, unless youd rather is be a 9?
Thus far, and theres still plenty more HCR members whove seen Die Hard surely, we have a total of:
8.75 / 10 for Die Hard.

ah the 80's what a time, Die hard was one of the first real violent movies that I can remember being allowed to watch and I love it to this day. It's not what I would call a great movie but highly entertaining nonetheless.
great characters through out the movie, everyone remebers Willis but when you actually watch it again you realise how well everyone else fit the movie, hans, his sidekick Karl, the computer guy(you know the guy who breakinto the bank, gets a lot of one liners) the pompous guy that works with willis's wife ( "hans booby.baby" hilarious) and how could forget carl winslow
A great action movie for anyone who likes the genre. I'd give it an 8.5
and for the next movie how about American History X, sure its not as popular as the last two but should get some opinions flowing

Yippee aye kye-aye, mutha####er!
I give it a 9.0, #####!
Current HCR Rating:
DIE HARD - 8.75 / 10
I'll give it a 7.5 out of ten.
Two things about the film annoyed me despite the great action and cool main character:
1. The dumb police chief character played by Paul Gleason was annoying and unnecessary. He added nothing to the plot and was a complete movie stereotype.
2. I had a hard time believing the one terrorist (the one the black cop killed) could have survived long enough to pop out the front door at the end. Spoiled the Suspension of Disbelief for me a little.
Of course, I had no problem suspending disbelief when Bruce swung himself to safety on a fire hose or did any of the 800 other impossible things he did in the movie. Still, those two things do drag my personal rating down a little.
If there's a John McClaine thread... I'll be there!
In all honesty, Die Hard rates as one of my top 10 favorite movies.
It's also the traditional family Christmas movie in my house.
I'll go with an 8.5

Greatest Christmas movie ever made. Even if Bruce Willis gets typecast to this very day based on this movie you've got to admit that he plays that harried everyman EXTREMELY well. 9/10 in my book.
I don't know. One the one hand this movie brought a new plotline into action flicks. One the other hand it was so successful it unleashed the stinking pile that was Die Hard #2 on us so that has to knock the score down a lot, however, #3 with a wicked Jeremy Irons and Samuel L Jackson almost made up for it. So, if only this movie existed I'd easily give it a 9. When you include the other two it drops down to a 6.5 because #2 was just so darn bad it drags it into the negatives but #3 lifts it back up into the positives.
"7 members of the Asian Dawn"
HA, good write up there, but since were only judging these films on themselves (and not any lesser sequels), Ill keep you as a 9 / 10 here.

Not sure how I managed to avoid this movie as long as I did, but I just watched it for the first time.
And I thought it was absolutely great.
Well, except for the ending. The stupid police chief throwing accusations at McClane who can barely walk at that point, the terrorist surviving and running out to kill McClane like that and then Mr. and Mrs. McClane driving off in the limo...I'd say half a point off for each of those.

Loved it. Reminded me why Bruce Willis kicks to much behind! Some parts I didn't like so much, like the vilification of the entire U.S. government, but I can look past politics and storyline for Die Hard.
Carl Winslow is the man.

I FINALLY saw this movie for the first time from start to finish and it is definitely worth all the praise it receives.
I can see how Bruce Willis cemented himself into action movie history as he is really fantastic in this movie as is the always great Alan Rickman.

9/10 its one of the classic movies.
I replied all that time ago and did not rate it?
pfah!
9.5 I can watch this move once a month forever: it's such a good flick.
Somewhere, on Slate I think, is an editorial wherein the write thinks yippee ki-ay m@#$$@-f%%^&$@ as said and used in this movie is the greatest movie line of all time. Go look it up and read it and see if it at least makes sense. I don't know about "the greatest" but as explained it definitely raises it's rating in my eyes.
"What idot put you in charge?"
"you did. When you murdered my boss."

Actually, based on the Bolded Line above, I had you down as a 9 / 10. Want to change it fully to a 9.5, or average them out to a 9.25? : )
I'd give it a 9.5 / 10.
It does have one of the best movie lines ever delivered.
And, John McClain is one of the best movie heroes ever simply because he's an everyman forced into a bad situation and who does what all of us think we would be able to do in that sort of situation.
This is my favourite Christmas movie of all time. You heard me right.

You guys pretty much said everything. It's the character Bruce Willis is attached to and Alan Rickman is just awesome. Crazy amounts of action and what I like more than anything, full of constant one-liners.

Another classic movie. I got this on vacation on one of the channels I didn't get at home at like midnight when I was fairly young. I knew it was a guilty pleasure at the time, but I couldn't help loving it. A great franchise (although I've still never seen 2).
The movie's not perfect, but it did sort of invent its own genre. It has to get some credit for that, even if its genre is filled with a lot of carp.
I think I'll give it an 8.5 I don't think as a film it's quite good enough for a 9. Realistically, my own personal attachment to it inflates my score quite a bit.

This movie is a classic. It's almost the definition of a genre. However, some scenes just don't hold up like they used to. I rate it an 8.
My wife gives it an 8 too.
Definitely the best of the series. Great action film with solid performances all around.
8/10
