This kind of thing has been going on since comics began. Companies have "borrowed" ideas from each other (or themselves) all the time. Sometimes it's the same creator reusing some of his own ideas. Some have even led to legal fights like Cap. Marvel (before DC owned him) vs Superman and Cap America vs Rob Leifeld's Fighting American.

Discussion of it generally leads to bickering between fans devoted to either Marvel or DC about who does it more often and whether the particular instances are actually rip offs or just vague similarities. I don't think you'll ever find any sort of answer as to who does it more often as both sides will claim particular examples aren't cases of being rip offs.

As for the two examples you give, Deathstroke came well before Deadpool and I believe Ghost Rider ('72) came before Atomic Skull ('78) but I could be wrong on that one. Also, the Ghost Rider you are referring to wasn't the first character to go by that name. One was done in 1949 by Magazine Enterprises (white suit, white horse) and then a very similar one in 1967 (white suit, white horse, same artist even) by Marvel Comics (got that from Toonopedia).

Ah, the Swamp Thing/Man Thing debate is my favourite! Has it ever been settled which was conceived first? The creators of both did share an apartment for a while...

Squadron Supreme = JLA

Flash = Quicksilver

Hawkeye = Green Arrow

Iron Man = Steel or Rocket Red

Doctor Strange = Doctor Fate

That's just a few. I'm sure other people could name many more.

Yet both of them were actually very much like the Heap which can be seen here... http://www.toonopedia.com/heap.htm

Who in turn was inspired by the Theodore Sturgeon short story "It" (no, not the Stephen King one).

Captain Marvel- Captain Marvel (not similar at all but they have the same name :cool:

I really hate these similarities because tons of them are chep copies. Flash and Quicksilver doesn't bug me because super speed is such a broad category. But what bugs me is Deadpool vs. Deathstroke. Deadpool is such an obvious copy. The names: Slade Wilson. Wade Wilson. Heck, they ryme with each other. Same abilities, facial mutilation, objects of experiments. That's why I hate Deadpool.

Sorry for that. Back on topic:

Magneto- Dr. Polaris....

When Punisher came out for Marvel,DC had DeathStroke created.

Normally the companies go back and forth for ideas,the only characters that seem to be unique and the idea does not go inbetween compaines is for DC..Superman,Batman..Marvel..Spider-Man,Captian America,The X-Men.
