So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

GHOSTBUSTERS
OVahVLJzrVQ

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

And here's where I drop my reluctance about giving a perfect score. Yes, I'm giving Ghostbusters a 10. Is this movie that much better than Godfather? Well, I don't know about that. But it did single-handedly create an entire genre - the big-budget special effects action comedy (an example of which, Back to the Future, has already been rated here). Ghostbusters set the standard for that category by getting it all right. It's fast-paced, meting out action in all the right spots. It's hilarious throughout, and remains eminently quotable twenty years after its release. And the special effects have aged *far* better than many other films of a similar vintage. The ensemble cast gels perfectly (owing, in no small measure, to their shared Second City experiences) and, much like the two Spider-Man movies, the city of New York practically serves as a supporting player. As a final note, this movie has a huge Indiana Jones factor (the impact that a given film can have on the career aspirations of its young, impressionable viewers). Because after seeing Raiders, we all wanted to be archaeologists. But after Ghostbusters, we all wanted to be parapsychologists. Any movie that can do that *must* be something special.

I have to give it a 9. Ghostbusters had it all. If there wasn't a pulse pounding action scene going on, there was something hillarious occuring. Sometimes both at once.

I took one off for Ernie Hudson's character, who was little more that the "token black guy." His role seemed tacked on, with no real purpose. It would have been virtually the exact same movie without him in it. I'd be shocked if his character was even in the original draft of the screenplay.

I love the Ghostbusters and was happy to see it finally get the royal treatment on DVD. This film was quietly innovative as Hail_eris indicated. It was incredibly likeable all around. Even the staunchest movie snob and happy-hater can't deny this movie. Great characters, great story, great fun.

Rating: 9.5

Insightful point. I always got this feeling too...I didn't say why I didn't give it a ten because I couldn't quite pinpoint why. Perhaps you've given a good reason.

Myself and some friends dressed as the Ghostbusters for Halloween one year...my geeky skinny friend played Egon, my portly energetic friend played Stanz, I got to play Venkman (Yay!) and my Haitian co-worker was drafted as Winston Zedmore and gladly played the part. Still, I have to wonder whether we would've invited him to that party if we were say George, Kramer and Jerry for example.

I'm going with 9.5; I love this movie. Bill Murry at his best.

Ive gotta say this is one of my favorite 80s films, bar none. Saw it when I was young, and love it to this day. A truly FUN film, with not only loads of laughs, but a great story as well. The actors were spot on (I didnt mind Ernie Hudson at all, and I think hes become one of my favorite GB of the group, behind Bill Murray) and the music and songs within really added alot the this movie as well. Not only was this movie fantastic, but it spawned a successful cartoon series (2 if you count the NOT Real Ghostbusters), toy lines, comics and countless other merchandise as well. Again, one amazingly fun, and funny, film that I dont believe will ever go out of style.

My Rating - 9.25 / 10

Well, in fairness to what you call the "NOT Real Ghostbusters", they did appear long before the Zany Foursome that we're discussing here. :)

The music, as you say, was great and I still love to listen to the soundtrack. Heck, the fact that you can wander down to even, say, a Wal-Mart and have a decent chance of finding the CD says something about the staying power of its' sales.

I actually used to sometimes get to watch this movie back in college. :) One of my professors - a psych professor, appropriately enough :) - used to love to show it because they filmed his offices in the opening part where the gang is getting booted.

While I can't quite put this film on the level of the Godfather for terms of cinema importance or even "quality level", there's just something undeniably wonderful about Ghostbusters. As such...

This, again, is a movie everybody loves so much, but I can't really warm up to. I guess that is because it used to scare the #### outta me when I was little. And so far I've only seen the translated version.

It gets a 7 from me.

You didn't grow up watching horror movies and looking at metal album covers, did you?

As for me? I'm giving Ghostbusters a 9/10. I love the movie and could gladly watch it over and over and over.

Funny...hilarious in spots...Sigourney Weaver at her hottest...8.5 it is.

Karate Kid came in ahead of Raiders of the Lost Ark? Hmmm.
I'm gonna give Raiders a 9.5 and Karate Kid an 8.

I more than appreciate the additional movie votes there CI, but for them to count you need to do so on the actual movies thread (which is VERY easily found here using the HCR Search feature) I more than encourage you to do so, especially for Raiders, which is a true CLASSIC in my eyes.

10/10 This is a solid, quality 80s comedy. The movie that made me love Bill Murray as a comedic actor, and arguably Dan Ackroyd's last good movie.

They came, they saw, they kicked some ###.

Awesome movie, funny as funny can be. It has such a wacky concept but all the actors pull in off. As it has been said, Bill Murray is the real star here but Dan Ackroyd reall gave one hell of an effort. And how do I love all those one liners.
"What are you, some kind of cosmonaut?"
"No, someone saw a cockaroach on 12"
"That must be some cockaroach"
"It'll bite your head off"
"Going up?"
"I'll take the next one"

I am surprised that I missed this one before.

There isn't really much to say about it, it is a comedy classic for a reason and it holds up pretty well.
