Anyone have their DS hitched up to the onternet on Mario Kart yet. Im getting the game when it comes out in 2 weeks.
I will try and arrange a meeting for HCRealms members, yeah?
I'm gonna hold out for a bit, make sure some compatibility questions get answered beforehand.
Boo-Yah.
Picked up MK DS today, works great. www.nintendowifi.com has instructions on 18 different companies' routers and how to configure them and the DS. :)
Played 1 4-game match, took em all. ;)

I took a look, and it sounds like Nintendo ACTUALLY has a pretty good idea of how to get this to work, which is just AWESOME. They even named the 5 hotspots here in town, that I didn't know about at all. I'm gonna be eating at Carlos O' Kelly's eventually here...... ;)

Ive got a D-Link DSL G60_4T, Any ideas?
Ive looked at the help sites etc, but nothing has worked thus far. How very very infuriating.
Hmm. You checked www.nintendowifi.com for configuration help on that router? :)
Also, uh, anyone pick up Animal Crossing for DS?

I'm heavily tempted to, but I dunno.....

How would one do this, dude?
Well, it differs from router to router, but some of them can backup their entire configuration into a file that is stored on your pc. You might want to take a look at your settings, or inspect your manual. If it isn't an option, it probably can't do it, but it's worth a shot.

Geez, that sounds like a fiasco. I don't know what the differences are over seas, but I bought a $30 (on sale from $50) Netgear G-router, and my DS works like a dream on it. Connected right away, even with WEP encryption, and it never gives me a problem.
I don't know if they sell Netgear stuff in the UK, or if a US one would work in the UK, but it might be worth looking into if you really want your DS to connect.

Huh? Didnt you guys get a demo of it when you bought the DS?
If MPH is released a way off, I can send you my demo to play. And no the thumb holster I was thinking would be awkward, but it is actually PERFECT for Metroid....it is basically a 3-D stick, but without limitations, so its smoother. Its really nice.

No, I bought my DS in early December of 2005. I think the Prime demo would have been released nearer to the DS' actual launch. But it hits stateside in March, so I can wait for the real thing. I hope I like the thumb pad. I'll have to make sure to buy screen protectors before it comes out, though.
I have a $15 gift certificate to Best Buy, and I'm debating wether to use it to buy a case and screen protectors for my DS, or to put it towards the cost of Animal Crossing. >.>

Oh, and I see Best Buy carries DS screen protectors for $5 a pack. As someone who's been using PDA's for years, I can say that $5 is a wise investment for the protectors, especially for something like the DS screen that's going to see a LOT of rough use when MPH hits.

B/c neither really use the touchpad in any important way. Yeah Castlevania has the "seal" thing but you can tell that was just added to make it feel unique. The game could have easily been put on GBA. Mario Kart doesn't really use the touchpad at all. A game like Animal Crossing just lends itself to the touch screen moreso than the other two. That plus the fact that the biggest thing missing from the original was online play (which the DS is built for) is why I say it's the perfect DS game.

Well, I'd have to disagree. Putting heavy use on the touch screen doesn't make a game any more 'for' the DS than another. CV was made for the DS; while the touch screen aspect was indeed gimmicky and sort of pointless, you could not have done that game on GBA. The GBA hardware simply could not handle the graphics, between the 3D backrounds and the sheer size of the game and quality of the sprites. So CV may have been a basic DS game, but a DS game it still was.
Mario Kart DS is just as much for the DS as Animal Crossing is. MK thrives on the wi-fi play, and the second screen adds an incredible amount to the gameplay.
I haven't played AC yet, so I can't comment on the quality, but just because it uses the touch screen a lot doesn't make it any better than MK or CV. I'm sure it's fun, but I doubt the touch screen functionality makes or breaks it.

People get so defensive about things. I wasn't saying they were bad games but they could have been done just as well on any other handheld system. One of the DS's main features is the touch-screen and if a game doesn't use it then it's not really specialiazed for the platform. I have Mario Kart and that game would work just fine on any handheld. I know it uses Wi-Fi but that's just one of the unique features of the DS (and one that AC also uses). As someone who has played all three games versus someone who hasn't I think I'm a bit more qualified to speak about how they utilize the DS's special features. It's not saying anything bad about the other two games (in fact I said they were both fun games). I'm just saying certain games seem to be better suited for the DS. Animal Crossing is one. WarioWare is another.

I'm not being defensive, I'm disagreeing with you. I'm saying that the touch screen does NOT make a game more for the DS than another that does not make much use of it. CV and MK are not games that could be done 'just as well' on another handheld because A) a handheld like the GBA does not have the power to run either of them and B) a handheld like the PSP lacks the dual screen which, as I said, is an intregal part in the gameplay of a game like MK.
I'm not talking QUALITY of the games at all. AC may well be more fun, or a better game, due to it's touch screen (I doubt it). However, that does not put it into some sort of higher bracket of DS games, nor does it make it more justified for the system, just as a game that pushes the DS' graphical hardware to it's limits but neglects the dual-screen, wi-fi, or touch-screen will not be any less a DS game than a game that uses all of the features equally.
I'm not defending anything, I'm merely stating disagreement with your opinion that AC is 'made' for the DS or something. You could put AC on the Revolution and have a similar experience (what with online play and all), and probably not miss the touch-screen one bit. If anything, I think what is driving AC's popularity is the online play combined with the fact that it's all in a small, portable package.

OH HELL YES.
Metroid Prime: Hunters is crazy. Definitely the best sounding and looking game on the DS. I can't believe they got this game onto a DS cartridge.
It plays nice too. I'm using the all-button controls (no touch screen, save for menu funtions), and it plays pretty nice. The d-pad certainly lacks in comparison to a analog stick, but it works. I had to invert the axis and lower the sensitivity a bit, though.
Haven't gone online with it yet. Still trying to figure out where you get your friend code, but once I have it I'll post it.
Bottom Line: A worthy DS game, and solid FPS.

Metroid update:
The game has a high learning curve in terms of the controls. I can see that turning some impatient people off at first, but it's WELL worth it to get used to one of the configurations.
Single player mode is pretty solid. The difficulty level seems balanced, though the 2nd boss is a bit easier than the first, and I actually had less trouble defeating the two (!) bounty hunters in the second world than I did defeating the first one you fight.
Multiplayer is where it's at, though. While I haven't played DS to DS (the game supports single or multi-card play), the wi-fi mode is incredible. It still suffers a bit from Mario Kart syndrome in that you can't really set anything if you want to just go into a random match. Like Mario Kart, you select the region you want to search in (Local or Worldwide), and if you're willing to play anyone or want to stick to folks of your own Rank. Once you do that, it's the same as Mario Kart: Wait while the game finds up to three players. I've yet to get three people in, though; each time I've played it's been one-on-one.
If you have Friends or Rivals (friends are Friend Code people, Rivals are people you've fought online and you've marked as Rivals after the match), you can set up the kind of match you want with them. You can select the match type, kill counts, and all that jazz. You can also use the VoIP feature with Friends only.
Once you start a wi-fi game, it's mind blowing. The arenas range from small to large, and the action is fast. I've yet to encounter any slowdown, which is awesome.
The bounty hunter available to you for multiplayer at the start is Samus. As you defeat them in single-player, you unlock them for multiplayer, but I've also learned that if you defeat a hunter in multiplayer, you get them. For example, I fought someone who was playing Trace, and I lost. No Trace for me. However, I've beat people playing Kanden and Spire in multiplayer, so I now have them.
Oh, and the game tracks EVERYTHING for your 'Hunter License': Headshots, kill streaks, win streaks, win/losses, shots fired, favorite character/weapon/arena, disconnects, and more. You can view the Hunter License for any friend or rival you have, plus if your DS is linked to your Nintendowifi.com profile you can view more stats at the website.
Overall, I'd have to say that this is the first game on a portable that has not only FELT like a console game, but has been on par with a console experience in terms of story, presentation, graphics, and scope.
If you have wi-fi at your house or have friends with a DS locally, you MUST buy this game. If not, you may want to wait as I get the impression that once single-player is finished, there isn't much more to do.

I'm going to import a British copy of it when it comes out so I can see what the big difference is that holds it up for five months.
I think I can answer this.
A) On the wi-fi error screen it recommends you go onto "www.nintendo.com" instead of "www.nintendo.co.uk"
B) The case is dark grey as opposed to clear, and a few milimetres thinner.

Erm, the UK DS cases are clear, as opposed todark grey that you guys have...Is this what you were asking?

Okay, so the UK DS games are SUPERIOR, then. I want clear cases.

Assuming you're not joking a millimetre or milimetre is very very small.

Well, you get a pass because of the router issue. How goes with that, anyhow?

Dude, I was soooo bent last night with Metroid. I sat down to play my first online match in awhile, and I got schooled in two fights by some nooB using Sylux, cheaply. Figured I'd post some stuff about the various hunters for you guys who may have not gone wi-fi with the game yet.
SAMUS: I played her a lot at the beginning, and did well. She's a bit boring, though. Also, her missles are her Affinity Weapon and the gain a homing feature when she uses them, but I never see anyone use her anymore.
WEAVEL: His Affinity Weapon is the Battlehammer. All he does for it is cause more damage and a bigger blast radius. Meh. His Alt-Form? His top half sperates and becomes mobile for melee attacks; his lower half stays in one spot and blasts at anything that moves. Sound good? Not really. Anyone with half-a-brain will strafe your lower half and nuke it, immediately wiping out half your health.
TRACE: The number one most abused hunter. His Affinity Weapon is the Imperialist, a sniper rifle. When Trace has it and stands still, he becomes invisible. That's right, an invisible sniper. You can see where it goes from there.
SYLUX: I love Sylux, but I've stopped using him because EVERY new player seems to flock to him. His Affinity Weapon is the Shock Coil, which essentially fires a steam of electric that locks on your target and drains their health, while transfering it to Sylux. The stream is hard to break free of and has decent range, so even a new player can rack up kills with him.
SPIRE: Good hunter, well rounded, but he's BIG, and thus easy to hit. The coolest thing about him is that in his Alt-Form he can roll up walls and stick to them.
NOXUS: According to Nintendowifi.com's worldwide stats, Noxus is the least-played hunter. I attribute this to the fact that he doesn't really excel at anything, and his Affinity Weapon just freezes the target when he uses it. I'm willing to bet that isn't very helpful in four-player matches.
KANDEN: I like Kanden. His Affinity Weapon, the Voltdriver, makes the target's display go fuzzy and weird when they get hit. It does lots of damage if you charge it up, too. Be wary of players using him. If someone is using him, they probably know HOW to use him and that's when he's most lethal.
I started playing Prime lately online.
I'll PM some of you my friend code later tonight.
I'm a big Noxus fan, strangely enough........
Samus, Spire, and Kanden are good runners up that I switch to for the pure fun of it.
And yes, I admit, I use Trace occasionally......who could resist invisible sniping????

I don't mind Trace. What I hate are the people who play him in this manner:
- Find high ground.
- Invisi-snipe.
- When they're found via the radar, they don't stand and fight: They go Alt-Form and haul tail for health and a new high spot.
A good battle to me is a shoot out where both (or all) players have to think on their feet. There's no thinking involved in standing on a ledge and invisi-sniping. I don't begrudge someone for doing so here and there, but please: If I find you, fight. Don't flee. :p

Its just a matter of getting round to do it, its quite complex. A lot of people are having the same issue.

Weird thing I noticed about Nintendowifi.com's methods of ranking:
It seems to pick-and-choose what game stats are used to determine your world wide ranking. For example, my online License registers ALL my kills and headshots (both wi-fi and multiplayer), but only tracks my wi-fi points and games-played. So any DS-to-DS games you play will NOT count towards your overall, worldwide ranking while the headshots scored in these games WILL count towards your worldwide headshot ranking.

Has anyone here (other than Thawmus) had a problem connecting through wi-fi to people on their Friend List in Metroid Prime Hunters? I'm finding that I can connect to a random match without an issue, but if I set up a match for Friends or if I try to join a Friend's match, the game boots me off wi-fi entirely. I know Thawmus had this problem too, when we tried to get a game going. Nintendo claims the problem is firewall-related.
If anyone has a solution, or anyone is available one night to try out a few ideas with me, I'd appreciate it!
Also, now that I think about it, I don't have problems with Animal Crossing at all. It seems to be a Metroid-only thing.

Did they happen to mention any specific ports that need forwarding?

No, no details at all. Basically, it just says that the problem is probably the firewall (I found it on nintendowifi.com's troubleshooting page). I technically have two firewalls; one on the PC and the built-in one on the router. The first thing I want to try is shutting down the router firewall. I have a feeling that will do it.

Whats-a-you problem? Check out nintendowifi.com for a TON of good troubleshooting stuff, including a list of routers that they know they work with and know they don't.

Lately I've discovered a problem with the DS' wi-fi service. Thawmus and Smaug have both experienced this problem too.
Basically the issue is that when connected to Nintendo wi-fi with Metroid Prime: Hunters, you cannot connect with someone via the Friend Code mode for a peer-to-peer match. You can connect to the Nintendo servers just fine, but not to people on your Friend list (and possibly Rival list).
I looked into the issue, and based on Nintendo's tech support here's what I can tell y'all:
The problem is router-related, most likely because of the built-in firewall that all routers have. Your options are essentially to turn off the router's firewall (if you have a seperate firewall program on your computers, then turning off the router firewall shouldn't be a problem), or to set up port forwarding on your router to allow the DS access to pretty much every port.
Here's some problems with those fixes, though:
1) Turning off the firewall may not be enough, and doing so can be tricky. You'll need to determine the model of your router and look up documentation on it via their site to find out how to do so.
2) Setting up port forwarding can cause other issues. First, the DS uses many different ports, so unless your router lets you choose individual ports to grant it access to (mine doesn't, you can only select ranges), you may have to give it access to ALL ports. This in turn can be a problem if you have any other devices or programs that require port forwarding, as you'll have to remove them. The other problem is that when you set up port forwarding, you need to tell it which IP address has access to these ports. Because the ID address of the DS changes every time you turn it on, based on what other devices in the house are already accessing the router, you'll need to see if your router lets you reserve an IP address for a device. If it does, get the MAC number of your DS (under the DS' Wi-Fi set up, under Options) and reserve an IP address for it. I used 192.168.1.4, so everytime the DS is turned on it grabs that IP and thus will be able to use the port forwarding for that IP.
Confused yet? Yeah, me too. The best part is that I'm not sure if this stuff even works. I need someone that can sit around with the game for awhile while we test these options on both our ends.
Finally, here's the thread at Nintendo's site where I got this info: http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=tech_questions_wifi&message.id=35523&page=1
