After picking up my comics for this week, I realized that I read a lot more team-related boks, than single character books. This lead me to the realization that I actually enjoy team books, more than I do single character books.

I mean, I like reading about Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Flash, Hulk, and Wolverine when they are out on their own. But there's something about The X-Men, JSA, and Ultimates that just makes reading comics more enjoyable for me.

Maybe it's the fact that you get more than one character in a book, or the fact that the good writers (Millar, Johns, Claremont) can make each individual shine, but do so without losing the "team" focus. I'm just not sure. Either way, I think given the limited choice between a single character book and a team book, I'd pick a team book over the sigle character book about 95% of the time. Superman would edge out a team book almost always.

What about you?

I read a mix.

Captain America
Conan
Thor stuff
Iron Man stuff

vs

JSA
Thunderbolts
Ultimates

Traditionally I've read a lot more solo books then team books though.

For me it has always depended on the author. It takes a very good author to do a team book right (i.e. Ultimates, JSA and Suicide Squad[old school]). It has to allow room for all characters to do their own thing and keep everything updated. A single person book can be just as good but I always have had higher standards for them because I am only focusing on one character so I expect a lot from them. A good example of this is Geoff John's The Flash. Pick up TPBs if you didn't read it and you'll know what I mean.

Well, personally I think I tend to go with teams myself now that I think about it, though there are certain characters that I'd choose over any team. But even with comics starring a single character, you still need a strong supporting cast. What would Spider-Man be like without Mary Jane or Aunt May?

A team has a more shared focus though which is what I think can make the characters a little more interesting since there's usually more time for them all to have a place in the spotlight. That being said though, without a decent writer, I find far too often that there's at least one or two characters on a given team that I care very little for and end up getting a whole lot more time gettin their stories told then I'd like.

Black Panther, Punisher, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Captain America.
Pretty much everything I read is a single character thing, as a matter of fact I tenaciously collect all of the marvel minis about single characters because I like them THAT much. I have very very high standards for what I am looking for in a team and a team dynamic and for the most part I dont relate or care to what teams are up to.
