1.What gender are you?

Male

2.How old are you?

32

3.How long have you read comics?

27 years or so. I may have started when I was 4, but know I was reading comics by the time I was in Kindergarten. However, I had a period of time between 1994 and 2002, where I read about 5 comics, because my collection was stolen, and I lost all interest. Thanks to Heroclix, I'm back, with a vengeance! :p

4.About how much do you spend on comics on a monthly basis?

$100-125 per month-though I am trying to trim that. :o

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?

No preferance- I read comics for the characters, not who produces them. That's inconsequential. In fairness, I do not follow many Indy titles-though that's more because I also prefer more mainstream comics.

6.How would you describe... of comics?

a)the Golden Age Sadly, I've almost NO exposure to this era of comics, and therfore cannot comment. Other than to say that I have a great admiration for what it spawned.

b)the Silver Age evrything we have today, is a direct result of what transpired in this era. Though there was a lot of campy stuff, comics were fun to read back then.

c)the Modern Age Comics have taken a turn that has tried to reach readers on a personal level. The campiness is gone, and not only do they try to appeal to us, but they try and stir feelings that no other era could.

7.Your favorite... is.

a)hero Superman- He is everything every hero strives to be an falls short of. He has an unwavering moral compass, and represents everything good that the human race can achieve.

b)villain Sabretooth- A savage, unrelenting beast. Went from Ironfist's #####, to A level villain when he became a Maurauder.

c)team The X-Men- Not the convoluted mess that they are now but what they were in the 80's, and before Marvel #####d them out.

d)comic Ultimates 2 is my favorite right now, but there are several that I like above all else:

JSA
Supreme Power: Hyperion
New Avengers
Teen Titans
Wolverine

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?
a)Marvel

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age - Classic, although a bit hokey
b)the Silver Age - Slightly more grown up, though still a ways to go
c)the Modern Age - Better everything except when it comes to imagination, mostly anyway

7.Your favorite... is.
a)hero - Spider-Man
b)villain - Dr. Doom
c)team - Avengers
d)comic - Y: The Last Man

1. Female

2. 21

3. Since I was about 10, so 11 years

4. Sadly, only about $20-$25. I would spend more if I made more. :p

5. Definetly a Marvel fan.

6.
a) Old school, very old school. The beginning of all that is holy. These are the ones I collect when I can get my hands on them, but I don't read them much.
b) Comics get smaller, are now worth less. Better stories though. Kind of 50/50 reading/collecting. Depends on the title.
c) Writers take risks, and therefore either come out with great stories or horrible story arcs. Art has gotten much much better. These are the ones I like to read.

7.
a) Gambit. He counts as a hero, right? :p
b) Two-Face. Rarely have I seen more depth in a villian, and the multiple-personality disorder makes for some interesting dialouge.
Close runner up would be Magneto.
c) Have to go with X-men.
d) Not exactly a line, but I love the What If? comics.

1.What gender are you?

Male

2.How old are you?

27

3.How long have you read comics?

since I was 2 or 3 (my first was a series of little tiny books about the origin of Superman, it's like 4-5 books in a little box. I used to have a Batman costume I ran arround in when I was 3, and at other times would make the Spiderman hand and say "I'll spin my web on you")

4.About how much do you spend on comics on a monthly basis?

Depends

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?

My absolute favorite is Flash Gordon (so newspaper/indie). Of the biggies, I used to be mostly DC, but now read more Marvel

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age - Many favorites come from here, many characters who are still better then modern 'edgy' versions. Flash Gordon, #### Tracy, Tarzan, John Carter (although John Carter and Tarzan were both literary figures before becoming newspaper strips), Conan (again, book character before becoming a comic character, he's still the toughest sword slinging barbarian of all time), Captain America, Superman, Batman, the Shadow (more a pulp hero). I like that many heros are more or less men, who achieve the impossible through shear strength of will. The stories are black and white, strong moral overtones. Really good stuff.

b)the Silver Age - In general, I take the Silver Age to be up to about 1980 (although I know most people put it way earlier then that). Lots of classic stuff, less ho-kie, but still often containing strong moral overtones. Some characters really shined bright at this time (such as Iron Man's Captalist America vs the evil despotism of Communist Russia, I think, as a character, he was best when he was created, and up through his anti commie days, he had more of a purpose). Introduces some edgier heros and villians.

c)the Modern Age - Many more thought out, less corn ball plots (although they are comics, so they're still out there on many things). Some of it I really like, some of it I really hate (a lot of trying to make outright villians into good guys, ie Punisher for example)

7.Your favorite... is.
a)hero - Flash Gordon, modern comics it's Captain America
b)villain - Red Skull - still doing bad guy old school style (ie saying things like 'I fight for tyranny and oppression, and all that's evil')
c)team - New Invaders (I'm going to have to see if I can find some of their older stuff), probably followed up by the Avengers (used to be a big Xmen fan, untill I realised they were a bunch of racists pretending to fight racism, I mean, where are the human students and faculty? Where are the human team members? Why shouldn't the government be allowed to make defense plans against rogue mutants? They know everything else about me, and how to stop a normal human if they get out of control, why not be allowed to prepare for a berserk Magneto?)
d)comic - Flash Gordon, but I also like

Captain America
JSA
New Invaders
Thunderbolts
Conan
#### Tracy
Tarzan

Just a little FYI:

The terms "golden age", and 'silver age" are actually technical terms with absolute definitions in comics.

The silver age of comics specificly refers to the revamp of comics with the introduction of barry allen as the flash in showcase around 1960.

as to when the Silver age ends, well thats debatable, but the concensus it that its ends at 1970.

I know that, but the idea of the 'Bronze Age' is a little nebulous (and for a while not really 'accepted', many people went Golden-Silver-Modern, with this huge time gap inbetween Silver and Modern).

I would class Marvel's launch as being more Silver Age in style. So I might say the Silver Age is up to the 70s if I cut it back. It's not untill the mid-late 70s that I feel it really changed.

Captain America, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Spiderman, et al still seemed more old fashioned (I mean, in Amazing Fantasy #15 we get a story about being faithful to your religion and God taking a man up into heaven, clearly not something you'd have seen by the late 70s/early 80s with guys like Punisher, Ghost Rider, etc). These guys all still wore the white hats.

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age

b)the Silver Age

The evolution of comics into a more serialized format - better artwork and more complex stories and characters (1960-1970)

c)the Modern Age

A combination of the Bronze age and todays work - the realization the product is collectible (sadly to the shagrin of the true reader) as well as a recognizeable form of art and an accepted media.

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?
b)DC

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age
I haven't read much of anything from this period

7.Your favorite... is.
a)hero
The Flash (Wally West)

JSA

1.What gender are you? Male

2.How old are you? 38

3.How long have you read comics? Probably at least 30 of those years

4.About how much do you spend on comics on a monthly basis? At this point, not very much. I do try to keep abreast of what’s going on, but I’ll usually only pick up a book here and there as the interest strikes me. $10.00 a month perhaps, maybe $20 if you consider buying a trade paperback in this.

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?
b)DC – I was a Marvel zombie for years, but I find as I get older the archetypal characters in DC really begin to appeal to me.

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age – without the Golden Age, where would we be? The stories may seem quaint and two-dimensional to us, but credit where credit is due, the Golden Age is where it all began. You can’t deny the influence of those stories and characters.

b)the Silver Age – Depends on where you draw the line. The Silver Age was in many ways about pushing the envelope. At first in the 50’s with the excesses of the EC horror comics, and then once the CCA put a stop to that, it was Lee and Kirby/Ditko at Marvel exploring making the heroes “real”

c)the Modern Age – Comics coming into its own as a respectable medium. Addressing serious issues (Green Lantern/Green Arrow in the 70s), more mature storylines (Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns), crossing over into the mainstream (Maus, Persepolis, American Splendor). Also with the Manga invasion, comics are enjoying a groundswell of popularity that they have not had, probably since at least the 70s.

7.Your favorite... is.
a)hero – Nightcrawler. The romantic swashbuckler with the body of a demon and a depth of faith.
b)villain – the Joker. His unpredictability, swinging from clown to psychopath, is chilling
c)team – Fantastic Four. The first comic that I came back to the store every month looking for that latest issue. Still a sentimental favorite despite their ups and downs.
d)comic – Right now, I’m enjoying Geoff Johns take on the Teen Titans.

Please treat this seriously as I actually plan on using the data.

1.What gender are you?
Male.

2.How old are you?
15.

3.How long have you read comics?
6 to 7 years now.

4.About how much do you spend on comics on a monthly basis?
$40-$60.

5.Which of the following is you favorite line of comic books?
a)Marvel
b)DC- By a nose, their characterizations are more appealing to me.
c)Vertigo
d)Dark Horse

6.How would you describe... of comics?
a)the Golden Age
The begining of it all. Archetypal characters, good v. evil, over-the-top plots. It is the basis of all that is super.
b)the Silver Age
The birth of Marvel and the turn of comics to a more sci-fi approach. Stories become more serious with more realistic characters. I am a firm believer that it ended with the death of Gwen Stacy (i.e. the death of innocence).
c)the Modern Age
Begining with Watchmen and DKR the modern age has held a much more serious stance. Comics darkened and became filled with deep plots that made you think. I discount all comics that were part of the 90's trend(i.e. three rare glossy covers) as these are not professional works IMO.

7.Your favorite... is.
a)hero-Tie between Deadshot and Flash.
Flash to me is the perfect hero, smart, heroic, a family man, and willing to sacrifice it all to save lives. Yet, not too powerful he relies on friends and perservance to make it through the hard times.
Deadshot is the perfect anti-hero. He has a dark past and at first glance seems a villain. But deep down there's more and he really does care for some(his kids). The character is very tragic without going through half a million adventures. He's also very witty.
b)villain-Right now it would be Two-Face because of what Loeb has done with him.
A great villain that has a much deeper personality than any other crook. He has layers upon layers that any writer can work with. In my opinon his twisted since of justice is Batman's perfect foil.
c)team-Suicide Squad.
Under Ostrander they made a perfect team book. The characters were all interesting and it dealt with serious issues. Great stuff.
d)comic-Since Suicide Squad is no longer in print, I'll say Ultimates.
Another book filled with a consistent pace, great characters and serious issues. If you haven't been reading you've been missing out.

I'm happy to say that with a few more entries I will be ready to type up a brief report on my blog of what trends I saw here. I would like another 10 to 15 people to submit first, but I'll deal with what I've got(if that's what it comes down to).

4. <$10 (usually much less). Used to buy a lot when I was in high school; now I only buy the odd compliation or graphic novel.

5. a & b are about equal for me, though I suppose I slightly favor DC.

6. a) Golden Age--the start of comics; the old days. b) Silver Age--the age I was reading for the most part...my favorite period. c) Modern Age--some of it's very good, but much of it isn't. There's a lot of teen angst in there.

7. a) I have a few, but Batman edges the rest out. A normal guy without powers, surviving on his wits, skill, and stones. b) Lex Luthor, for certain--A genius, but still pretty much a normal guy with no powers, takes on the most overpowered (and overblown) character in the comics. c) Team - Injustice League. d) Comic - I dunno...I used to collect X-men, Avengers, Iron Man, Teen Titans (most of the other DC books I'd borrow from my cousin ;))...but now it's probably some of the DC alternate realities stuff...the Dark Knight series, Kingdom Come, etc.

6.How would you describe... of comics?

a)the Golden Age
"Classic", but extremely difficult to enjoy. I'm sorry, but it just WASN'T good.

b)the Silver Age
When I think of the Silver Age, I think of the JLA Satellite Era, and that was glorious. Much more serious, much more enjoyable, much more realistic.

c)the Modern Age
Well, I enjoy it. It's not classic yet, but maybe in 10 years I can look back on it
and say "Wow, that was a good time."

7.Your favorite... is.

Hero: Kyle Rayner, GL and/or Tim Drake, Robin

Villain: This one is tough. I don't really like villains. I might have to go with the early Magneto, because he has such purpose to his plans. He's not some madman trying to take over the world for his own, he's trying to take it over for his PEOPLE.

Team: Teen Titans, booyah!

Comic: Ongoing, I'd have to say Invincible or Ultimate X-Men/Spidey
Limited, Infinite Crisis and Ultimates.

In a recent special I saw it claimed they generally ended in the 70's due to the silly campiness factor of the Batman TV show among other things. Comics went from more mature storytelling back to being cartoons and shows for kids. People then gradually dropped interest in them.

As for the Golden Age demise an anti-comics McCarthyist style crusade in the 50's took place. Killing off the golden age of comics. Did you know that apparently "the reading of comics contributes to juvenile delinquency!!!" Well if its wrong I don't want to be right.
