I don't care what anyone else says, this was a great movie. Solid acting, excellent special effects and an overall great beginning to a great series.
Dumas rating: 9/10
Ive got to say, the LOTR trilogy has quickly become one of my favorite series of movies of all time (no hype in this at all, they are truly that good), and The Fellowship Of The Ring being my favorite of the three.
I honestly believe them this film to be a Masterpiece in virtually every way a film can be. Acting, Music, Visual and Sound Effects, Pacing, Characters, Directing, and so on. This film is a Classic to me in every sense of the word, and one of the few films I would rate a Perfect 10 for (thus far just Raiders and the Godfather, possibly Jaws, have I rated a 10). I cant say enough great things about this film, and from a Life Long Star Wars fan, the LOTR trilogy has since become my favorite movie trilogy of All Time.

A 10, and here's ten reasons why...ranging from the big things to the little things:
1) While The Two Towers betrayed Tolkien's portrayal of Gimli and Eomer AND Eomer and Aragorn, it can be forgiven. But this movie was a faithful rendition that deviated in only the most minor areas.
2) The Balrog, and Gandalf's stand against it.
3) Arwen's appearance and music when she comes to Frodo the first time.
4) Boromir's temptation was very well portrayed in several instances.
5) The portrayal of Galadriel's resisting the offer to take the Ring of Power. While the lines were changed for the better, "All shall love me and despair" was kept, and those words are chilling.
6) Boromir's death was extraordinarily touching. "Be at peace, son of Gondor."
7) I liked Aragorn's final scene with Frodo, and when he draws down on...y'know...a FREAKIN horde of Uruk-Hai...too cool.
8) Samwise was perhaps the most overlooked performance.
9) Cinematically, all of the fight scenes are exciting! Two thumbs up to Legolas stabbing an Uruk through the eye with an ARROW, then nocking it and killing another.
10) Hobbits were captured beautifully.
11) Kudos on the 5 minute intro that so nicely puts the uneducated into a proper mindset for understanding wtf is going on!

I'd call the bloated role of Arwen more than minor.
Therefore 8/10.

I'd not describe Arwen's presence in Fellowship as bloated.
They took two minor roles and made them one slightly larger role.
I can't think of anything negative about this film.

Ouch, a 2 point deduction for giving Arwyn a bit more screen time. Seems a bit harsh to me personally. But hey, thats your call, your score, and it counts as much as any of ours. :)
This film is an absolute classic. Ok it's a recent movie but it's the kind of thing you can watch repeatedly and in years to come I'm sure it's going to remain an amazing achievement and a great movie. When the movie was announced I think most people were thinking - this movie had better not suck. I was surprised at how good the final result was, on every level I can't imagine it being done much better. Kids are going to see this before they'll ever read the books, I wonder how much of an impact that will have on them considering the effect the Star Wars, Indy, Superman films had on people my age.
No problem scoring this one a perfect 10.

....
Some great points, the Balrog scene in particular is something that I really enjoyed because it's one thing in the books that I could vividly imagine and I guess everyone has their own "vision" of how it would look. But the people involved in creating this movie this nailed it on the head, IMO. The design of the Balrog itself is just awesome, and the mine set, Ian McKellen's performance... Just so many things bringing the book to life. Same goes for the rest of the film but that was one piece for me that just couldn't be messed up.

Not usually my scene but lots of cool sequences!
7.5 out of 10
I think that movie wise, these once kept getting better. I would scvore them 9.5, 9.75 and 10 respectively. This one, although it was good, has the same problem I have with a lot of movies that get guarenteed sequals. It has to spend a LOT of time developing character, and that can tend to be a little bit boring. This movie did this a lot better then most though. My rating...
9.5 (Which is a very good score comming from me. :))

Creating the character of Glorfindel is bad cinema. PJ did exactly what he needed to for the movie Fellowship of the Ring.

For cutting out the stupid songs in the books, the movie should get a high score to begin with. Good acting (who doesn't love Samwise?), fantastic cinemetography (Lawerance of Arabia is still the best all time movie cinemetography, but LOTR is definately up there), great special effects, etc.
I give it a 9.25/10

I disagree.
Creating the character of Glorfindel would have been bad mainstream cinema.

Pretty good movie. Minor cut outs with Tom Bombadil and whatnot but it still delivered.

Lord of the Rings is another masterpiece on DTM's Rate the Movies list. I'm not sure it's worth getting too much into the reasons why and make any insights that we all haven't heard before. These films are amazing.

Peter Jackson did what everyone thought was impossible and faithfully brought Tolkien's masterpiece to film. Taken by itself, forgetting for a moment that it is an adaption, if you can, it's a great film. A little slow in spots, perhaps, but that's forgivable. Considering that not only did he make a great film, but that overall he pleased one of the most rabid groups of fans in the world, a group that was prepared to crucify him if he messed it up, that's got to be a success.
My rating 9.5 of 10
Even though I enjoy watching the other two I think LoTR was the best. maybe because the things he left out I did not miss(songs? bleh! Tom Bombadil? double bleh!)
Amazingly, even though a previous poster had the movies ratings going higher, mine will actually drop for each movie as his changes grate more and more.
So;
Fellowship of the Ring; 9.75 (-.25 for the unneccesarily pc Arwen role)
Two Towers; 9.50 ( don't remember but there is a reason...)
Return of the King( ditto)
This movie is, to me, the greatest movie adaptation from a book I have ever seen, so kudos to Mr jackson and all those involved....

Excellent adaptation of ### book, and out of ### three films is ### best at adapting ### book.
Over the past 2 days I watched all 3 back to back to back(with appropriate breaks for sleeping and whatnot) But no breaks for eating, that's what TV trays are for!
I have the extended versions and I still stand by my rating; 9.75. This is fantastic. :)
Being a fan of Tolkien's books (I think I've read almost all his books ... or at least the larger part), I didn't even watch the first released version, and waited for the long ones to be released in DVD. Despite minor changes, the adaptation suits me really fine : the actors are good, special effects are stunning, the places where they shot it are beautifull and truly gets you into the story, and you can see that Peter Jackson truly loves Tolkien's universe. One huge mistake for me (but even in a 3 hours + movie you can't put everything that's in the book) is that there is no Tom Bombadil . Anyway, a great movie, that deserves a 8.75/10.

LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring.
10/10 It is a great sson to be if not already classic movie, although I found the following movies to be worse...
Two Towers is good, but never got me as involved as the awesome fight scenes in Fellowship (Aragorn and the Orcs/Gandalf and the Balroq).
ROTK could have been cut/edited better (which seems to be a BIG problem for Peter Jackson, see King Kong).
the openingscene was utter #### too.
only in Fellowship did we really see the Ringwhraits true greatness.

Right off the bat, this is a 10/10.
Fellowship to me was incredibly done. It was a movie that can stand on its own, and have us wanting more. Did we all not want 2002 to pass as quickly as it could, to get to see "The Two Towers?" From the Shire to Amon Hen, it was an incredible journey we went on, and when over, we wanted more. THAT is how a true trilogy and great first film should leave you. More than once, when a beautiful panoramic shot was shown, did either me or a friend go, "Man, when are we going to New Zealand?"
The performances were great. I do however, feel that the extended versions of the film breathed more live into characters who came across different. For example, in Fellowship theatrical, Boromir is always portrayed as being either a jerk or under the influence of the ring. Only in the extended version do you see a Boromir that is not only a good person, but a person you feel for when he does come under the influence of the ring. Sean Astin as Sam, Viggo Mortensen as Aragron, and Ian McKellan as Gandalf were some of the very best performances I ever saw.
To me, what made this film incredible was the moments that resonated with the viewer. The scenes that, when filmed, the filmakers had no clue that it would make Tolkiens work timeless again, not just in written word, but in film as well.
The moment I refer to was when in Moria, when Frodo and Gandalf were speaking about the ring/Gollum/the quest.
Frodo:"I wish the Ring had never come to me, I wish none of this ever happened."
Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for us to decide."
When I saw that scene, some two hours into the film, I started to cry. Remember that this film was released less than 4 months after 9-11. We were still reeling from it. And while the film was an awesome escape for all of us from the horrors of the real world, it also rang true as a good film or book would, that a truly great story will reflect happenings in the real world.
In December of 2001, we all felt like Frodo. We all didn't want this to have happened. There was still rubble and debris. Workers still worked around the clock, and threats of anthrax, airline security, as well as an overall feeling of dread still hung over us as a nation and a global community.
But as the trilogy went forward, so did we as a society and as a world. As the Fellowship and others faced danger, so did we. Sure, we've made some mistakes along the path, but we have carried on. As the song goes, "The road goes ever on and on...."
To me, Fellowship will always be a bittersweet and enjoyable film. It came into my life at a time that not only did I need an escape, but I also needed to be reminded that life still goes on.

My favorite one. Particulary because no Gollum (annoying!)

I found this movie a bit too long and drawn out. I nearly fell asleep watching it in the movies but I must admit since the other two came out and after the years that have gone since I first saw this movie, I wouldnt mind sitting through it again some time.
Hmmmm - Ill give it a 6

I think it's overrated by many, but it is good.
As a series, I remember allmost nothing from the second one. The like climbed hills a few times, and had a big fort battle. And the blonde girl was introduced.
The first one I've tried to rewatch many times, but never got past when they reach the elves hideaway place. It just switches me off really.
It's a beautiful film, but amazingly. It's not that stylistic. Meh, it just kinda bores me.

Great scenes, and particularly the extended version helps set the stage. Though I have to admit that I kept getting the following sequence stuck in my head:
Elrond: Welcome to Rivendell, Mister Baggins.
Frodo: My name is FRODO!
*ahem*
Both versions are 10/10 for me... if I could go 11/10 for the Extended, I would. :)

This is one of the few movies I will give a 10 rating. It differs some from the books but that does not detract from how great of a movie this is. The best of the trilogy.

When I was a kid I like the Hobbit. I was very interested in this but I just didn't like it. Hopefully Dragonlance (Movie) does a better job. :)
You know these are the Peter Jackson live action versions here, not the old time cartoon films, right? :p
Not too much to add, except my rating:
10/10
Greatest movie trilogy ever made, and that comes from a rabid (well former anyway) Star Wars fan.

Hey hey, Ill admit the prequels were a bit of a let down, but dont let those tarnish the True Classic-ness that was the Original Trilogy of STAR WARS.......yes, Im an Uber SW fan, though like you, can admit the LOTR trilogy was a better than the OT (though its Very Close for me).

Oh no, it doesn't really have much to do with the prequels, they were fairly good (Jar Jar Binks, and Hayden Christensens 'acting' aside :devious:) but more to do with just my own personal tastes in fiction. I started to move away from 'space fiction' when I was about 10, and became obsessed with comic books (quelle bon surprise) and Fantasy literature.
I saw all 3 original Star Wars movies in theatre, and saw 'A New Hope' for the first time at a drive in even when I was 4. I love(d) those movies. From the time I was 4, until the time I was about 12, I watched the original Star Wars 30 times, and that was in the day and age when they never played those movies on TV, and rental movies were $$$$$.
We had the original 'Super Channel' movie station when I was about 9. The movies they played, would only play once every 1-2 weeks back in those days. When they announced that they were going to be having Star Wars, I geeked. I'd go so far as to actually set my alarm clock, on a school day, for 2 AM so that I could get up, go down stairs and watch it, and then go back to bed to get up for school. Yeah, I was that obsessed.
I once went to a double header movie (by myself), just before 'The Return Of The Jedi' came out, of 'A New Hope' and 'The Empire Strikes Back'.
The best part about it all really though? It's come full circle. My 9 year old son loves Star Wars. He's seen all 6 movies, well more if you include 'The Clone Wars', and he has 3 (4?) Star Wars video games. Though he doesn't collect the toys, he loves Star Wars Leggo :) For Christmas this year, Santa brought him Darth Vaders tie fighter Leggo, and Indiana Jones and The Curse of The Crystal Skull Leggo. (Yes, he loves Indiana Jones too :)) As well he loves all the super hero movies, and LOTR. It's so awesome :) :classic:
You have taught your son well.....I am pleased.
:)
This is my least favorite of the 3 films and it's still fantastic.
