I absolutely hate that this movie DOESN'T EVEN MENTION THE FRICKIN CLOCKWORK ORANGE!!
It's so phony.
2.3/10
Ive got to say, I do agree with EN. This film, even though its considered one of Kubricks Masterpieces, is a film I didnt care for At All. I cant say I remember specific instances which I hated, though I do know that Ive watched this film twice in my life, 15 years apart, and I was grateful I only seemed to be watching this film once every 15 years (might push it back to 20 if I ever plan to see this movie again :) ) A cinematic classic, eh, Ill respect the work gone into this movie, (which means even though I Strongly Disliked it Im not giving it a 0 or -5 :p), but I think a score of 3.25 is all I can muster for this one.

Interesting plot-brainwashing criminals rather than killing them.
There's also the idea of putting them to work as well . . .
It's kind of good, little drags every now and then, and very British imperialism (something I'd expect from Alan Moore-just a little).
Vote: 6.75
The concept is cool, and it is amusing, but I just didn't like it as much as I thought I would, still, I think it was good enough to get above 5 (the thumbs up/thumbs down divider). Let's go with a 6.0

I can't believe I'm reading these negative reviews...well maybe I can given that it was touched on a bit before. This doesn't include the same conclusion that the book does (therefore no direct mention of a clockwork orange), however, it's still entirely inspired by the Burgess novel and makes the same commentaries...it's also worth noting that in the US the only version of the book available to Kubrick also ommitted the final chapter and even after he finished the film he made no reservations about it's conclusion...the theme of the clockwork orange (Pavlovian behavior modification from evil to good etc.) is still very obviously present and Burgess was never sure which version he preferred either.
Is it as deep as the book? No, but films overall don't have the means to challenge the dept of literature so it's always unfair to say one is better than the other without further analysis. As a film, in comparison to the book, it remains just as significant (if not more significant) within it's own medium. This film, as far as it's influence, it's immaculate direction by Kubrick and all the way down to the barriers it broke for the ratings in America, is hugely significant...it was rated X and Catholics were forbidden to see it, and yet was also nominated for best picture. I think for it's style, attitude and the fact that I've seen it many many times it is still one of only a dozen films that would currently earn a perfect ten for me...so it's personal tie certainly weighs in on my giving it a perfect rating.
Rating: 10
On another note, I hate the film Forrest Gump with an undying passion, but I absolutely cannot ignore it's cultural significance and rate it any lower than a five.

I absolutely loved the book and felt the movie did a great job interpreting it. There were some essential themes in it and the acting wasn't bad.
My Rating- 8.5

1/10 from me.
I'm sorry, chasing a woman down and killing her with a phallic symbol doesn't do much for me movie wise.
Spartacus or 2001 are much better films.
Dr. Strangelove is my personal favorite of his films though.
not that bad. We've beome inured to the violence of this movie in the past 15+ years.
It is still a very valid and interesting movie.....
I give it;
8
I realize some people don't like it but I think some of the themes it brings up are still relevant........ especially after Identity Crisis..... ;)

Okay yeah absolutely, there's a lot of disturbing scenes like that in this film, but that's the point, really. Alex is a twisted, demented little (insert f-word). And yet what's done to him in the name of humanity is in its own was as inhumane as the crimes he commits.
The imagery has dated somewhat, I'll admit that. But it's still a powerful film with some serious things to say. It's not a comfortable film. It makes you want to look away while at the same time it compels you to watch. And it makes you think in a way which most of the movies we've discussed here do not. I'd say about 8.5 out of 10.

This film opened my eyes to what could be done on film. I don't care that it isn't exactly the same as the book, if it was that would be redundant. It is a new take on the same concepts and very much stays true to the spirit of the book. At the time this was legitimately risky and risque film to make and it is more than just mindless violence and shock value, it is in fact mindfull violence and shock value.
This is one of maybe ten movies that get this high a rating from me
9.75 out of 10

4/10, a mess that's laughably tame by modern standards.
I'm surprised by the rating of this movie since it's a classic to me, but to each their own, right :)? Inbetweener's critique reflects pretty much the way I feel about the movie (especially what he says about the book), with better words than I could ever use :p (also I completely agree with what he says about Forrest Gump too...). Acting perfectly serves the movie purpose, music is excellent, shooting is great too. I do understand d_knight7's POV, but I dont have any problem adapting to "older standards" (else I wouldn't love Fuller's Shock Corridor :p, amongst other older things), so my rating will be:
9.75/10

Tame? Really? The rape/torture/murder scenes still turn my stomach. Very few movies have actually disturbed me to the extent of a Clockwork Orange.
That said, I love the movie. I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on how it compares. The movie succeeds for me in that it crafted a vile creature in Alex, but still manages to make me feel sympathy for him. The events that occured after the brainwashing were a bit heavy-handed but worked well for the flow of the movie.
I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
Bravo just ran a 30 scariest films show and Clockwork Orange came in second only to Hostel Thats pretty good for being lame.
The critics specifically mentioned the brutality of the rape scene in contrast with Alex's Singing in the Rain.
Lets pump this one's rating up: 8/10

Which is ridiculous considering how bad an actual movie Hostel was.
Clockwork is still one of my favorite movie/book combos. I love them both equally. I have read the extra chapter in the book so am aware of the actual ending and mentioning and brief summarization of the clockwork orange.
A classic to be sure. No matter how brutal it is.

Holds up decade after decade.
10/10.

Oh I dont mind brutality in my movies at all, and I actually liked Hostel. But to me, Clockwork Orange was boring and uninteresting. I wasnt bothered by the violence at all, I just didnt like this movie at all, and it actually holds the "honor" for the lowest rating I personally have ever given a movie here on RtM.

I give it a 6.75.
Clockwork Orange, along with Barry Lyndon have to be seen after watching the documentary made by his wife, otherwise they are just interesting movies of their time. Where in the real world could Alex walk into a record store and pass the 2001 Movie soundtrack in the top ten rack?
Aside from that I find it hilarious that one of Alex's ex-mates who join the police force in the movie is now Dalziel, a British Police Inspector.

I diasagree 100%.
Barry Lyndon, by virtue of lighting, cinematography, editing, and narrative, is a masterwork.
Clockwork Orange is simply a tour de force, the likes of which possibly even dwarfed the majesty of Anthony Burgess' novel.

I was only offering Barry Lyndon as an similar example, they were made more watchable as a result of having some of the in-jokes and difficulties on filming explained.
I watched both films last year when one of our tv channels put Kubrick's work to air over a couple of months, Barry Lyndon looked an 'easy' (yes I know no film is easy) film to do, it was only impressive after the documentary explained about the lens and cameras that were used.
Ive seen Clockwork Orange twice in my life, and it is probably in my Top 10 Least Enjoyable films Ive ever seen. I have no desire to ever watch it again, personally.

I am really glad to see things have turned around for the ratings of this great film. I love that Kubrick's style can be so different from film to film while still always remaining very Kubrick, this is a terrific film by a master of the medium.
I like Kubrick. I liked The Shining, I liked Full Metal Jacket. Im dying to see Dr. Strangelove. I borderline hated this film (though even so, I still gave it a 3.25, lets that be a lesson to you all who hand out 1's with such ease) :)

Agreed, it ranks up there (down there?) with Thin Red Line for one of the all time worst films imho

Yeah, I hear is amazing, and it scored really well here on RtM, but still have yet to see it. Go figure.
I can't stand this drivel. I hate all of the characters and I could give a crap less if he is reformed at the end of the film. This movie gets so much praise and I can never understand why.
