So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

THE EXORCIST
jGdbbVcKJlc

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

Next Film: ??????

Is this going to be places under Horror or Comedy? I'm serious, when I first saw this movie, I laughed so hard. More then I have for any comedy. It wasn't a bad movie at all. But it just didn't have the impact on me that it seemed to have had on others. I'll give it an 8.25/10

:surprised  Well, call my surprised. I mean, this is easily one of my favorite Horror films of all time (and I am a Huge fan of the genre), and this is also considered by many to be one of the Best Horror films ever. (I honestly dont remember anything even remotely funny about it)

Sure the beginning may have been alittle slow, but once it got going, it was like a snowball gaining more and more horror size and strength with each passing second. Great story and directing, excellent characters and acting, the music, the suspense, the thrills, the scares, all top notch for me.

Heck, I even enjoyed the Special Edition better (with the exception of the goodie goodie ending), as they added subtle little phantoms and ever so slight demon heads here and there, and the spider walk scene, especially its ending, was a great addition.

A true horror and cinematic Classic in every sense of the word, and Id give it a 9.50 out of 10 (getting close to a 9.75 for me actually)

Hrm. This movie was a lot scarier when I was younger. I did see the special edition with the spiderwalk scene....that creeped me out. I agree with DTM that the subtle addition of demon faces (like on the range hood) was a good enhancement. I give it an 8.5/10.

This and the Omen are probably my two favorite horrow movies, meaning I've already listed all the reasons I love The Exorcist. It has a creepy plotline and scares you without relying on gore.
My Rating- 9.25

THE horror movie that sets the standard. It's truely a scary movie. One that does it without any silly one liners, buckets of blood/gore and gratuitous sex/nudity. (Not that I don't like all that sometimes ;) ) Come on, this movie is so good that here we are today, 33 years later, still having discussions about how damn scary it is! It's a timeless classic, as scary today as it was in 1973.

So, I'm the only one who found this movie to be funny instead of scary. Man, what does that say about me?

Yep. Now go rate Airplane as the scariest, horrorfest youve ever seen as well. :)

I don't think the point of the Exorcist is to make us laugh, but I suppose if you go into looking to laugh you might come out satisfied...I sure find the idea of priests being vomitted upon to be funny, but for a movie like this I try to keep it in the context of the story.

The Exorcist is simply put the scariest film ever made and it is also one of the highest quality horror films ever made...those are of course two different things that just kind of correlate. A film is afterall far more scary after it has compelled to hook you into it's story. Pet Semetary is kind of scary but not very compelling or good...while The Wicker Man is very good but no so outright scary. The Exorcist manages to excel at both conditions...it also happens to be the most innovative horror film ever made, with the exception of maybe Psycho.

I saw the Exorcist when I was just nine or ten years old and I only watched up to the part when Reagan yells "the sow is mine!" followed by "lick me!". I knew then I couldn't go further and I had nightmares about what could possible remain in that hour and half that I didn't watch for years after...little did I know that not even my imagination could conjure up something as dark and twisted as the crucifix-to-the-crotch scene. I would happen upon the film three or four years later and I loved it...I was hoping it would scare me and it did...it still does and I watch it every single Halloween. Horror happens to be my favorite genre of films and I'm always tempted to bring attention to the more obscure classics (i.e. The Sentinel, The Changeling, Susperia etc.) but to me there is no better film that appropriately walks the line between gratuitious shock and real drama than this one...it's not overrated, the Exorcist is the greatest horror film ever made.

OMG, The Sentinel. That movie scared the carp out of me! All those weirdo neighbors, the blind priest in front of the window, the boyfriend saying "the entrance to HELL!" and when Alison went to the apartment above her to find out what the noises were, and her creepy dead dad hurrying past her...*shiver*.

And The Changeling.....George C. Scott rocked. That wheelchair propelling itself around, the medal pushing itself up out of the ground, the whispers of "my medal", the ball bouncing down the stairs....all I can say is old George was way braver than I would be...I would have been out of there in 2 seconds.

As cheesy as it is, another movie that freaked me out was Phantasm, the Tall Man was so creepy. I went through a horror movie phase as a teenager.

Do you all remember "Don't be Afraid of the Dark?"

Holy Crud, was that the film with the little evil guys that were unearthed behind the brick seal in this familys basement? They whispered to the wife, whose husband didnt believe this was happening, and eventually pulled her into the unearthed opening? Heck, I loved that film, saw that a few times as a kid, and once a few years ago. God that was Creepy, little voices coming from no where always freaks me out. :)

And yes, The Exorcist to me is easily one of the best Horror films of all time. Surprised as dont have all too many members rating on this one actually.

You are correct! They always whispered "Sally", and no one else ever saw them. They pulled her napkin off her lap during a dinner party and she freaked out, they threatened her with a straight razor while she was in the shower, and killed one of her friends by tripping him on the stairs with a rope. I bought a dvr of it off Ebay.

I didn't find this movie the least bit frightening, the whole thing is far too dependant on the viewer buying into the religion premise and all that that involves. For me it all seemed more silly than really scary.

I agree with Magnito that there were some unintentially funny moments, and the director does a good job for the most part developing an eerie tone, but story and acting wise it just didn't do much for me.
