So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

AIRPLANE
q3rXK7NhWN8

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

Next Film: ??????

Oh good Lord. Quote-fest. Visual gags. Hilarity in the background. I could go on and on...I think I will.

"Guess I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue."

"Excuse me, I speak jive."

"When do you leave?"
"I can't tell you that. It's classified. But we're bombing a factory, and we'll be coming in from the north below their radar." (Paraphrased)

"Assume crash positions."

The smiling autopilot. Turkish prisons. Propeller drone on a jet airliner. Drinking problems.

And don't call me Shirley/Surely.

"What can you make of this map?"
"Well I can make a hat, and a broach, and a pterodactyl..."

Truly this is the funniest movie in existence. If you haven't seen it, go now. NOW!

9/10. It needed more nudity.

Friggin. Da. Bomb.

One of the few films I have on Video and DVD.

Truly truly awesome. So good.

Erm....9.3 out of 10.

Sorry bout my fractional scores DTM, but I have to be precise! :)

Heh. It's like you were calling my name. As you may have deduced from the avatars of the past few weeks, I enjoyed this movie. Airplane is the high point of the Zucker/Abrahams comedy team's career (although credit must be given to the underrated Top Secret!). Which is kind of sad, as it was their first movie. So it's been a gradual downhill slide since then, culminating in the abysmal Scary Movie series. I guess it might be a commentary on Hollywood itself. You look at Airplane, a comedy that spoofed the disaster films that were showing on every screen at the time (it's been said that Airplane killed the genre). Watching it today, it's still funny, even though disaster films are no longer en vogue (the Poseidon Adventure remake is an obvious exception to that statement). The jokes are not overly topical and the slapstick aspects are made all the funnier by the whipcrack timing of actors who are relative strangers to comedy. Leslie Nielsen is fantastic in his first real comedic role because he plays it so totally straight. The same can be said of Peter Graves and Robert Stack. Lloyd Bridges gets to ham it up a bit more, but Stephen Stucker (Johnny, Lloyd's flamboyantly queeny assistant) steals every scene he's in. And, as has been mentioned, it's so quotable! While it doesn't approach the level of Ghostbusters and The Blues Brothers, my two comedic 10s (mainly because those movies weren't *just* funny), it's still a comic classic. I give Airplane a solid 9.0.

IWell, what else can I say that hasnt already been said, least as far as the classic quotes goes. This movie is a Classic film in the comedic genre, with little doubt, and is easily (along with Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and the Blues Brothers) one of my favorite comedies EVER (possibly even garnering my #1 spot) LOADED with classic slapstick humor, done in a totally serious deadpan manner, this film will keep you rolling on the floor from beginning to end. I cant wait to get my "Dont Call Me Shirley Edition" DVD from Amazon.com (which should have been here already!) so I can watch this film yet again and introduce my wife and stepson to one of the funniest films ever made.

Airplane - 9.50

Airplane was madcap fun. A relentless rapid-fire assault on your funny bone. And unlike many other films that tried to do the same, most of it worked. It was like the Marx Brothers on speed. If I don't give it a superlative score, it's because when you get right down to it, it's pure fluff. It's good fluff and it doesn't make any pretensions at being anything more, which is good. But still fluff

Absolutely one of the funniest movies I've seen. It's like they went through the script several times to see if they could fit just one more joke in there. And the deadpan delivery on some of the stuff is just great, Leslie Nielsen in particular.

9.5/10

I guess I'm going to be the one to bring the lovefest to an end. Having not watched the movie since it's original theatrical run, where I enjoyed it very much, (Yes, that does make me feel like I am an old, old man), I recently watched the movie on DVD and wow! This movie just did not hold up for me. The jokes I remembered as being so funny in my youth were lame to me now. I don't think I laughed once during that viewing. Several movies that I found very funny in my youth have let me down recently. (Murder By Death, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and The Frisco Kid) I guess my tastes have just changed.

My 13 year old self gives it a 10 out of 10 but the 37 year old me has to give it:

3.0 out of 10.0

I'm a HUGE FAN of this. With a friend of mine, when we don't know what to watch amongst my DVD collection, we always end up on this one (or the Holy Grail ;)). Won't quote it though, since I've always watched it in French ... I love the sequel too (great William Shatner ).

9/10.

Uggh. One of the all-time worst movies for me. I had to stop watching after the couple got on the airplane. I just don't get this kind of comedy.

I remembered this movie being soooo funny when I was a kid, but I recently rewatched it and it realy didn't hold up for me.

It is still funny, particularly the crazy flight control centre guy, but it didn't come close to living up to my memory of it.
