Time was once, I think I had the entire script for this movie memorized. All the irreverant, bizarro humor that characterized Monty Python. I may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's brilliant. Perfection? Maybe not quite, but still goot enough for a 9.25

I think it's kind of funny that the sponsored links on this page are for tickets for Spamalot.
The plusses:
Classic skit humour from a classic troupe.
Authentic muck...I once had a undergraduate class taught by a scholar of Arthurian Legends who thought that aspects of this film was in many ways the most historically accurate ever shown in cinema!
As an earlier Python enterprise, it's less blatantly vulgar and so withstands viewings with the entire family.
The minuses:
I see only one fault, and it's one common to certain 'genre' comedic films: it didn't have an ending. (For a more recent but utterly similar problem, see The Gamers).
That being said, the Python humour is an accquired taste...so I rate the film an 8.75 ...later works by Gilliam, while some are lacking the broad humor of the Python work have corrected the storytelling deficiencies in Holy Grail.

A true classic of comedy. Can you count the times you and a friend have re-acted the scene with the Black Knight and Arthur?
"I'm invincible!"
"You're a looney..."
Ive got to admit Im not a huge Monty Python fan, but this film is a real gem from beginning to end. So many classic scenes within (the killer bunny rabbit, the black knight that even limbless refuses to go down, the Knights of Knee, the horses are just sounds made with 2 coconut halves, etc.), help make this a true comedy classic. Whether youre a fan of English comedy, the Legends of King Arthur, or both, this film is for you.

I hate to admit it, but I just was never that enthralled with this movie. I saw it because it was a "must see" movie and perhaps that built it up a bit too much for me, but overall I just found more parts that were dull or annoying than I did parts that were funny. Is it a classic in regards to certain lines or viewing with certain friends? Sure. Overall as a movie though, it's one that I don't regret not having seen in awhile.

I'm undecided whether this is my favourite Python movie or not.
It used to be The Life of Brian (hey, it has full frontal nudity!), but studying the Arthurian legends has made me like Monty Python and the Holy Grail more and more.
9/10
Monty Phthon and the Holy Grail is hilarious from beginning to end. Like most cult classics I'd never see this movie in a theater, but I did own it on VHS (and that's saying something I never buy movies)
Everything from the Coconut Halves to the Knights who say nee. What's not to love. But like Airplane this movie is one you either love or hate. I happen to love it so I give it a (9.5)
I'm old enough to have seen it in the theatre.
Is it funny? It's silly and very very funny. The problems:
1) 30 years of High school kids and rennfaire people who cannot let it die. Go to a rennfaire and say NEE!!(or any other easily recognizable quote from the movie) very loud. You will be suprised how many replies you get. The humour is good but in 30 years of hearing the same thing over&over&over&over&over, now it's overdone. So many people walk around quoting it I'm actually sick of it. Yes British humour is an acquired taste... like warm beer and yes some people just "don't get it." Maybe it's the people I'm around but this movie makes me sick and it is a good, laughable movie.
2) Life of Brian is my favorite Monty Python flick so that knocks this one down a bit.....
I can't rate this movie at the moment because thinking of it and all the gamers who still quote it in the back rooms D&D games at the local game store and comics shop makes me want to retch.

It is somewhat hit or miss.......If I voted right now I'd give it a 4 so I'm not voting for sympathies sake. :speechles

Y'know, I think you may have hit the nail on the head as to part of the reason I just can't stand this movie. It's not the British humour - sadly, I acquired that taste far too long ago :) - but, rather, the American corruption of it. ;)

I'm going to do the movie a favor and rate it on its own merits and not blame it for its fans. I actually sat down and watched it again not too long ago. Pretty funny all the way through. There were even some bits that I forgot about. Sure, any movie's going to suffer due to overexposure (look at what happened to "It's a Wonderful Life"). I'm going to go with the crowd here and give Grail a solid 9.0. Mind you, I'd give Life of Brian a 9.5, as I agree that it's a better movie (loaded with some hilarious social commentary). But I can't dock Grail just because a generation of Ren Fest rat catchers and high school drama clubs are overly fond of it.

I think DTM may have picked my favorite comedy ever here...firstly, I'm in the camp that says Life of Brian is underrated...I even think the same about the Meaning of Life...however, I think that a long with Kentucky Fried Movie and This is Spinal Tap, the Holy Grail is probably the funniest movie ever made. It doesn't matter how much my life changes or how little drugs I take now before watching it...this film still cracks me up.
There are only six movies I'd give a perfect ten to on an interval scale (for DTM's threads I often round up)...all but two have been rated by the members here (Unforgiven and Empire Strikes Back). With that said, this is my favorite comedy ever and I have no choice but to give it a perfect score.:cheeky:

I admit I haven't seen it in years, mainly because I was in a group of friends who watched and quoted it to death years back. I don't think I'd go out of my way to see it now. Not even sure how long I'd stick with it if I came across it flipping channels, but even though I'm somewhat oversaturated with it even still, thinking back impartially, I have to admit there was some brilliant comedy here.
...dock Grail just because a generation of Ren Fest rat catchers and high school drama clubs are overly fond of it.
Now that is an excellent statement! Hence why I'm abstaining on voting for this one...... put Life of Brian up there and I'll have to get off the fence.

best of the Monthy Python movies 9.5/10 !!
9.6/10
"She turned me into a Newt!!!.....I got better"
10/10 because it's one of the few comedy movies that has ALWAYS made me laugh out loud, not just a little smile (as much comedy movies after a while), and I've already watched it more than 10 times (maybe closer than 20 now - maybe even more since I bought the DVD). The perfect movie to bring me up when I'm feeling depressed.

Simply put this to me is the funniest film ever made and it has stood the test of time and annoying quoters quite well. Yes the last 10 minutes are lacking but the rest is non-stop comedic genius. And since it is the greatest film in its genre I have to give it...
10 out of 10
Brilliant film. Everything about it is awesome. This was the first DVD I ever owned.
