What happens when you put together a who's who of fantastic character actors and give them some pretty American southwest scenery to chew on? The Prophecy answers that question. Sure, there's a story about a second war in heaven that's kind of fun, and some special effects were thrown in to satisfy American audiences (seriously - there are a whole host of post-production bells and whistles that were omitted in the international release because they felt that Europeans didn't need explosions to feel like the movie had reached a suitable climax). But the real reason to see this movie is the amazing talent that's floating around in its cast. Christopher Walken is, well, Christopher Walken. I'd pay eight bucks to watch him pick up his dry cleaning. So to see him give the Walken treatment to an angel is a treat. Then we get Eric Stoltz, who every female you've ever known thinks is hot. I'm not kidding - ask one. The look you get should be answer enough. He's good. Not Killing Zoe or Mask good, but he turns in a solid performance. Elias Koteas is one of those great workhorse actors that you'll recognize as "that guy, you know - he was in that one movie?" He's the protagonist here, but make no mistake, this is Walken's movie. Virginia Madsen collects a paycheck on her way to her Oscar nomination for Sideways - nothing special about her performance. But the real standout in the cast - the one who manages to steal scenes (if not the whole movie) from Walken - is Viggo Mortensen. Good gravy is he fantastic as Lucifer. He gets maybe ten minutes of screen time, but every line he's got is gold. He was still a relative unknown at the time, but this movie sure put him on the map for me. So we've got a decent horror flick with a spectacular cast and solid replay value (I own it on laserdisc). I'd say that's good enough for a 7.75.

Hail's got it right on the head, this is the Christopher Walken as the Arch Angel Gabriel film.
Christopher Walken as an angel gets this movie an 8.

I really love this movie. It has a very epic feel, a great take on religion, and some fantastic acting. I have always enjoyed different take on religon, especially in books like Preacher and Sandman. Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel and Viggo Mortenson as Satan was just brilliant and makes you wonder how perfect heaven could really be. A really great film all around, my only criticism is the pacing in parts.
My Rating- 9

Christopher Walken is, well, Christopher Walken. I'd pay eight bucks to watch him pick up his dry cleaning.
Quoted for emphasis, because it's so true. Worthy of the solid 8 rating.
This is one of those movies where the cast is doing such a wonderful job you don't even notice some of the speed-bumps in the plot (they need the general's soul :noid: )
I agree with the consensus of an 8, largely for Walken & Viggo
the late 70's mutant bear-thingie I did'nt see.
I'l agree; 8
