View Full Version : How Do You Like To Play?
A current trend in the general discussion is on tactics of how people play. The general consesus does break it down into a few categories and it brings up the question of how do you like to play?
Cheese-tastic!!! I am UBER Competitive!!!-
This type of player plays the same team repetively. The more Veteran Superman and Wild Card with Sue Storm the better.
Thematically Competitive
This type of player tries to meet theme, but may sub out a figure or two that would technically break theme in order to make the team able to keep up with the more competitive players
Purely Theme
A very strick player that plays ONLY what is exactly printed in the comics. Or will only play pure team ability.
Competitive, but I won't play the same team more than once
This is the kind of of player that may play cheese one week and then play theme the next or mix it up another. This player seeks to better themselves as a player by trying something new every game they play.
It depends on the prize
If the prize was Kyle Rayner vs Jervis Techt this player would cheese it up or become more competitive. However, if they did not need the figure that badly or at all the team build style completely changes.
Casual Play
Casual Play players only play in non tournament settings. They like the game, but not the tournaments. However, sometimes a casual player has no choice as there is no venue in the area, but they meet at a gaming club or with friends.

Balanced! With high attack values, around usually Captain America (Ult or AW), Batman, Spider-man w/pounce, Iron Fist, Baron Zemo, Punisher, Vision etc.
I also use Quantum Kid, Vertigo, Black Lightning, etc. That triple/double incapacitate is plain nasty. Ever seen a frozen Lockjaw--ice-puppies?
I use tkers as second hitters more than Lockjaws (V Marvel Girl). And every now and then I get thematic, usually centering around the above people.
I'm better than 66% wins and have played in 30 or so tournaments. I'm always in our final four battle royal.

Thematically Competitive
This type of player tries to meet theme, but may sub out a figure or two that would technically break theme in order to make the team able to keep up with the more competitive players
I'd say about 90% of the time I play a Thematically Competitive team. Not so much with the subbing out of figs but more for Feats. If I sub a fig it's usually because that fig hasn't been made yet.
Best example was my X-Factor team, using other bricks to sub for Strong Guy and previous to Sinister I used different generic figs and pogs (but only male ones) to sub in for Madrox.

But I accidently kliqed Pure Theme!
I have played every type of team possible. Now that I have reached the equivalent of heroclix old age, I like to have fun when I play. Thematically competitive teams seem to be the most enjoyable to me.

Purely theme.
The fun of the game is in playing out comic book battles. When I field a team that makes people say "cool", and people passing by know what it is, that's the payoff for me. I can build cheese teams to minimize the randomness of dice and make it easy for me to win, but why bother? No one at the table enjoys it. As a judge, it's my job to nurture the clix community by showing people how much fun the game can be. I could smoke people week after week if I wanted, but how many players would I have left? I understand that a few of you enjoy a challenge of that nature, but beating cheesy teams takes work, and that's not fun for me.
Heroclix old age is a good term, and it fits. When you start playing, you want to win a few, and when you start winning, you'd like a few more. When you gain some expertise, that's when you find out if you're a gamer, where the fun comes from winning, or a player, where the fun comes from playing.

Competitive, but I won't play the same team more than once. I don't ever really play cheese or theme either, I just play what I feel like playing and that works well together.
Casual Play only ... and purely theme of course :)

I went with thematically competitive - although after reading the descriptions there isn't one that fits me.
I play themes. As everyone knows, we all have different defintions of 'theme'. All my team consist of one of these themes:
Single-Universe Heroes
Single-Universe Villains
Its very easy to make a competitive team under those guidelines and stick to a theme. Sometimes I'll go with a current or past roster. Most of the time I'll just pick a hero or villain I really want to use and then see what characters he or she might likely team-up with that I can use to build a competitive team.

Most times I try to build Thematically competitive teams, but most often I end up with decreasing the effectiveness of the team by adding figures that are part of the theme, but maybe could be replaced by more effective/cheaper figures. Like for instance playing the old IC Wolverine on an x-men team when I can afford to put a more effective version on the team (like HOM Shield Wolvie). I also like to build pure theme teams, and then tweak them using feats to make them more competitive (like adding ICWO with oracle on the card to give them access to perplex or outwit that they otherwise did not have access to).

It depends on the prize.
If it's something I really want, I will build a solid team that I feel has a good chance of winning. If it's something I could not care less about, I will throw together some odd assortment of guys or put together a theme team.

Sometimes I play pure theme, sometimes competitive theme, sometimes I'm interested in what I'd like to call 'pure strategy', finding a really effective team to cause certain effects, completely disregarding who the actual characters happen to be.
Why the big hang ups about playing a team, or type of team, more than once? Tweaking and tuning and really learning all the subtleties of a team takes a lot of time if you mean to tweak, tune, or learn very much.
I guess that's my answer to the poll, as none of the choices really describe me.

I'm usually pretty competitive, but I am moving to themes and such. I also play alot of casual play with my friends, so tough choice. I will not play the same team twice though, there is always room for improvement.

I voted "Thematically competitive," but "It depends on the prize" might have been a better choice after reading the descriptions. That said, there have been very few prizes recently that I've wanted enough to go completely non-theme, and even then it was simply a team that, though fairly powerful, could barely be considered cheese. Also, sometimes the scenario being played gets in the way of any theme for the team.

Thank you so much for all the win/loss stats guys...knowing that you win 66% of the time with a theme team is definitely necessary information.
Took the Competitive Theme choice. I make teams that are mostly themed, always within the same universe, but will borrow feats from another universe.
Oh, and I win 123% of the time.

I chose purely theme, when I should have picked Thematically Competitive :(
I play competitive but not with the same team all the time. I'm not going to lie I like to win. But I'm not going to win at the expense of fun. To me part of the fun is coming up with different competitive teams and see how they fair....
Though I do play theme from time to time.

I've played competitively once but much prefer casual play. I actually never thought about playing strictly by theme--I'll have to try that sometime ^_^
I have a different take on the Thematically Competitive. I like to use "conceivable" teams that would have to take on the typical kind of threat represented in a heroclix game, i.e. take out or disable the other team. The majority comes from one team but I also add guest stars that would conceivably work with them. It doesn't always have to be the same "alignment", ala Magneto or White Queen with the X-men, or reformed crooks like the swordsman or the Thunderbolts.

Purely 100% fun. For me, a Heroclix evening is beer, pizza, and attempting to outdo my buddies with references to obscure events from any given character's backstory.
I put "competitive but won't play the same team more than once". I like to mix it up, and I'm willing to try almost anything once. (note the key word, ALMOST. That's a hint.) Sometimes I'll just throw a team together from clix I like, other times I'll try to make a decent team (usually with clix I like), and sometimes I'll use a bunch of Sentinels. Sentinels make up pretty much the only team I've ever used more than once. They're fun.
I play some sort of theme in every tournament! Even in booster drafts, marquee, etc.

Straight Theme for me. No feats, No BFC's and No Special Object tokens. Just straight up 500points of old school themed greatness. God I love this game.
I voted Thematically Competitive, but I would say after looking back that I tend to lean more towards pure theme. I like to play single universe and all heros or villains whenever possible. I'll cheese it out as much as possible with cards, but sometimes that can be difficult because I just can't see a good comic related reason why my F.F. team should be ICWO.:tired:
I do tend to use the same teams over and over until the rest of the gang is screaming at me to try something different, but at least in my case it won't be LAMP or the Pit Crew.

My sediments exactly.:noid:
When I first started playing we had 2 venues and both were really competitive. We're down to one (for now:cool: ) and the whole venue would fall between Thematicly competitive (great players) and Competitive but won't play the same team more than once.
But given the teams represented in the top 8 I think the meta-game has changed enough for me to start playing more competitive again.

Pure theme. Nothing beats this. Even when you get your ### handed to you. I'm currently running a Suicide Squad team in this friendly match:
V Chemo w/ AP, Fortitude, & ICWO
V Enchantress w/ Camouflage & ICWO
V Deadshot w/ Trick Shot & ICWO
V Killer Frost
E Vixen w/ Vault
And in a current tournament over at Creation Matrix, called the CM Official Heroclix Championships, even though the opponent and I agreed to a themed battle despite the heavy limburger going around, I ran an Ultimates team:
U Iron Man (Ultimates) w/ ICWO/AP
U Nick Fury (Sinister) w/ ICWO/Protected
V Black Widow w/ Stunning Blow/ Protected
R Scarlet Witch (Fantastic Forces)
E Paramedic (hereby known as Jane Foster, SHIELD Medic)
R Mandroid Armor (hereby known as Agent Beaulieu, SHIELD personnel)
P Tony Stark LMD (exposed, so the real Iron Man's to the rescue!)
He brings a West Coast Avenger team...T'bolted to Mystics. Needless to say, I lost, having to face 7 Mystics :shakes head:

Out of the choices, I chose competitive since I try very hard not to play the same thing twice. Sometimes they are themed, more often not (even played teams with all 3 universes on them way back before retirement started). However I'm mostly interested in going to tournaments to have a good time. Seriously, how many of you would bring a Gotham PD team to regionals? :D

I picked "Depends on the prize", but I usually play for fun, so it's casual, and I usually build a theme of some sort.
At Dragon-Con, which is where I usually play competetively, it's booster drafts, so I just build the best I can, though I am partial to characters that I like if I pull any. This led to a Paste Pot Pete/E Wizard/V Wizard team last year... I didn't do so well.

I'm a cross between Pure Theme and Themtically Competative, and voted Pure Theme. My themes can be based on sculpt rather than actual comics teams for example, like all transparent or all silver. And I consider switching out Dr Fate for Dr Strange on my JSA teams to be more a matter of sheer practicality than simply competative. I also never use BFCs, almost never pogs, and as few Feat cards as possible (Alpha Flight and Armor Piercing being the most common of those).
I only ever play at the weekly tourements, no 'casual play', the only people I know of who play are the ones at the tourneys.
I like to play nude and or drunk
Most venues would frown on this I would assume
Fine for home games
Strip clix! You can either take the clix or remove articles of clothing equal to the number of clicks
Nothing personal, but most of the people I have seen playing clicks I would really, really REALLY rather not see nude!
edit: oh, and theme
I am almost role-playing.
I do try to win, but my teams have purpose and the figs are used in accordance with what I remember about the character.
I do loose a lot.
I have never, not enjoyed a game.

I don't know if any of those fit me?
I always play in tournaments, but I usually build a team that I will enjoy playing that is set around whatever the scenario for the tournament is. I mostly only use figures I like playing, because though winning is great, I play for fun everytime.
I picked "Thematically Competetive," which is most accurate, but I will wander from that depending on my mood.
I love to play pure Fantastic Four or New Mutants, but every once in awhile I like to be competetive.
It isn't for the preize as much as sharpening the saw. We have prety good communication around here and informally agree when a night is going to be "uber-competetive."
It's no fun smoking a pure theme team with a pure competetive team.

I always play to win. Whenever i have played a theme team i always lose terribly! I don't have that many figures to make many theme teams as well so after losing horribly with the teen titans and the new mutants it was time to play Thanos a lot!

Thematically unlike any other.
Come on now, who else has played Chocolate Chip Ice Cream with Nuts, and Lando's Casino?
Otherwise I just play to play. It depends what kind of mood I'm in on the day the tournament rules are announced.
I'm 98% theme. But I'm ready to give up on The New Mutants. Time to try something else. Origins has given me a lot of new options. :D
Absolutely, 100% theme team. But I do win a lot, so does that edge me towards competitive? I don't sub in figures unless a character hasn't been made yet (ie Gambit stands in for Pete Wisdom on my Excalibur team), but I do put a bit of thought into what combinations can be useful.
Still not found a way to make the Teen Titans shine, but my Legion of Super Heroes owns the field thanks to the help of Science Police.

I used to be strategically thematic. It's a tightrope walk though. Aside of other reasons I am now casual because I most like the true theme of having Darkseid vs Superman, Mr. Sinister vs Cyclops etc, etc. You can't set that up at tournaments. I also like games that go to total elimination. I like having the option to take my time to make my moves and/or be able to talk about whatever while playing. Time limits are not condusive to this. Round limits are but themeatically people don't just stop fighting very often cause of time or round limits. They either get beat, concede, or run (a form of conceit). I still like the sealed event format and hope they start doing it about once a month. I may infrequently put a 4th of july team (Star & Stripe?) together for a fun trip to the tourney. I decided to start playing for fun so I will be watching myself when I do put a tourney team together - if it looks overly cheesy or too much like cannon fodor I may as well just stay home and see if Dr. Doom can crush the Fan Four or whatever.

I'm generally thematically competive. I don't really like to mix universes or good guys and villains. But I do play to win. It's a great game of fellowship and comaraderie (don't think that's the right spelling) and I enjoy it for that aspect. But it is a game and I go into one expecting to win everytime (much to my disappointment). So if it wasn't for the fun factor I'd burn out.
But I always try to mix it up. Play figures I haven't played before, combos that I think of, you know just generally try to be creative. That keeps it fresh for me as well. I think that if you play the same strategy every game it may burn you out faster. (I have a friend that was doing that for quite a well but he finally changed up a little and it freshened it up for him).
Lastly, like Rock's description of this category says, I am always trying to improve and learn more about playing. If I get beat, especially in tourneys, I pay attention to what beat me and try to adapt.
I try to build teams that actually stand a chance of winning, but I have some fair play ground rules. I don't abuse the really obvious tactics like ALT-F4 or LAMP, but I will play Defenders backed up by a T-Bolted Ant Man. Having my 18DV always vulnerable in combat makes a big difference to me. I usually play universe pure, and I generally try to find some sort of theme for my team, though it's not necessarily a comics theme. I also self-enforce the Highlander rule, although someday I may unleash the horror of my Cheetah/Jinx swarm. (I have 6 Jinxes and 9 Cheetahs, including the LE)
Even when building a theme team, I won't add a figure that just doesn't help the team, even if that means I have a major character missing. A friendly game is one thing, but since I can only get to on average two tournaments a month, I like to really play when I get the chance. Fortunately I play at a great venue with some skilled players who like to mix up their builds and play much the same as I do.

Thematically competitive, especially when using T-Bolts or MOE.
When I do play purely thematic, CSA (with Unleashed R Green Lantern subbing for Power Ring) is my guilty pleasure.

I really stick to a Theme team. I could never have superman and joker on the same team.
I am competitive, but I think using the same team concept every tournament is boring and make you predictable for your oponents. When I decide to repeat a strategy, I use to try it with another figures (eg: play Powerhouse one week with taxi-Thanos, next week with a shelheaded-Man of Steel).

For me it depends on the prize and if I´m the tournament envoy or not (if I´m, why to play competitive instead of light-hearted and having fun with my friends?). Usually I end up making teams for new players or players who just didn´t have time to make their teams on their own, and I keep for me the last pick on teams choice. It keeps things interesting and I find pleasure watching people playing with teams I have tinkered with. :)

It all depends on the prize. If the prize is a piece I really want, I will go thematic competitive. That way I stand a fair chace and don't spoil anybody's fun. If I'm playing for a major prize that I don't have, like starro or a masterpiece figure, then I bring pure death to the table. If it's for something I already have, even something big like galactus or spectre, I go for a fun team. I don't really care about trying to win a piece just so I can sell it and make a few bucks. I'd rather someone who doesn't have it and really wants it to have a chance at winning the thing.

None of the above. Really I put my teams together for playing agressive (ie charge in guns blazing and let the chips fall where they may). Sometimes that falls into theames, sometimes not, I play casual and tourny that way, I would have said competive, but I don't feel I am, if I lose that is fine, I don't stress over putting a team together, I just do up some math the week before look over the stregnths and weaknesses and make ajustments to fit my style of play. I am always the first to toss out a new rule in the game (First one to bring a dou fig, first one to play feats, first one to play new characters) so I don't think I run into cheese that much.
I have put themes together (defenders a few weeks ago in fact, and I am still the only guy to ever play a chapions team at my venue with GH, Angel, Iceman, Herc and Black widow, it didn't count as a theme because it was before themes came about, but it was still fun).
So yeah I really don't fit in, which is fine by me.

I like to be competitive but I don't always have to win and I sometimes play teams that have no theme at all but were characters that I really wanted to play. Now KC Superman is cheese but I put some money down on him and I love playing him when I can, I'm not strictly by the book nor do go forever without playing a theme team.

Epalicki says I tend to lean "Extreme Theme" in my teambuilding, usually vying for comic accuracy. I'll use other strategies though, but lately I'm less about the min/max and more about fun teams and off the wall strategies (like my TO Morrow/Red Tornado team that relied on Proximity Mines & Force Blast to deal damage).

I play thematically competitive. I go for teams that either represent my favorite teams or factions while at the same time are worth their salt fielding. I guess you could say I'm in it to win, while at the same time trying to ensure both me and my oppenent have fun during the game. I'll switch up figures and teams every week if I can help it and depending on what comic(s) or events have come out that day (we usually play every Wednesday), I'll build a team inspired by such.

I went with thematically competitive - although after reading the descriptions there isn't one that fits me.
I play themes. As everyone knows, we all have different definitions of 'theme'.
3 years later and I play the exact same way.

i play for fun and to win!! i don't play cheese, but i play teams that are good, and hard to beat! i usually try to add a theme to all my teams! i'm a comic geek so finding themes are pretty easy!
my nasties team probably was ''i f**k up your plans team'' aka spy theme
susan richards
agent brand
iron widow
scarlet witch
and someone else i think. it was crazy!

It all depends on how I feel from week to week as well as the format. If I've been getting beat quite a bit and the format is something I can come up with some pretty suck ideas for when I will most likely play it but on the other side of the coin if I've been dominating the last 2 or 3 weeks in a row I may bring out something like the Royal Flush Gang and have some fun watching it get beat down... again.

I play 100% comic-book accurate and roster accurate theme teams. I have been playing theme teams before it was the "in" thing to do; i.e. before the Themed Team rules. In my opinion, with the inception of Generic Keywords, Theme Teams are the new Cheese Teams.
My win percentage is about 80%. I don't rely on cheese, specific powers and feats, or gimmicks to win games. I rely on my tactical prowess on the battlefield. I will, and have, taken down über-cheese teams with the likes of Superman Prime, Darkseid, Batman Stealth Teams, etc. with nothing but comic-book accurate Infinity Challenge S.H.I.E.L.D. teams.
Here is my Theme Team Thread with my battle reports. I have to update it as I have a ton of battle reports soon, but here it is:

Also, if you are interested in building comic-accurate / time-line accurate Marvel theme teams, check out my database. I've added a ton of villain teams in the past couple of months, and have a ton of teams still to add. Working on the various incarnations of the Sinister Six now.

i didnt vote cuz im a mix of options 1 & 4.
i like to use figs ive never used before becuz it makes it fun.
but at my venue im known for using flashes so thats why ive tried new strategies. but i always use either a flash, iron man, or winter soldier.
they help me adapt to new strategies cuz theyre what i specialize in.
sniping & hit & run.

It's missing option B: You play so good, you can do whatever you want most of the time, theme or not, so everything is pretty much fun win or lose.

I went with casual play. It'd be more accurate to say "close-to-comically-correct casual competition." I'm not opposed to tournaments, and am planning to enter a couple soon, but I'm much more interested in just having fun. I don't care if I get my butt kicked, I'm still having fun as long as the other player isn't a cheesy-win-at-all-costs-or-I-hate-my-life type.

Iam theme team guy and a D.C. guy to boot! My favorite is "The Bat-Family" or "The Justice League Of America" or "JLA" either The Meltzer or The Grant Morrison Big Seven! I love playing The Big Seven in 1000pt team tournaments! Teen Titans is another fun theme team I like to run when I can! Classic or Geroge Perez and Marv Wolfman version or Geoff Johns original Lineup!

QFT! We had a few of these guys at our venue, but they have since moved away.

I also play thesame way: thematically competative..
Dr.Doom will never be mixed with Batman, but I will have him use whatever means otherwise to win.

I guess mine would be
Thematically Competitive
This type of player tries to meet theme, but may sub out a figure or two that would technically break theme in order to make the team able to keep up with the more competitive players
But I accidently kliqed Pure Theme!
That's good, because I clicked Thematically Competitive, but after reading the descriptions of them, I think I'm actually pure theme. I do play pure themes, but I am also very competitive with them, so based just on the names that seemed most appropriate.

I would like the "uber-cheese" to say it out loud & identify themselves.
"hi. I'm (insert name). & I'm a cheese player."
group response " Hi (insert name)."
"it has been 2weeks since I last 'cheesed'. My friends have had to take my Fortitude & ICwO away to a safe place, but I'm doing OK."
" I slipped during a friendly at a friends house.
I brought a LAMP team.
He said there were pizza & fries.
I thought had said 'Playing for LE's & Prize'
I'm so ashamed."
I like to play a fig I haven't played on a team. Sometime Theme, some times 'people with Hats' or in 'Chairs'
I tried to play a 'Kille E2 Supes' team. that dies in the #####.
I'd like to think I play eclectically.

Thematically Competitive, but I refuse to abuse generic keywords like 'detective' and 'spy'. I mostly stick to actual teams like West Coast Avengers or Outsiders.

This thing is really old. I was able to vote again on it. =) I noticed I was taken out of pure theme.

Yeppers! This is me. Even when I run I tell everyone that depending on what kind of theme team you're going for, I'm flexible. If someone wanted to do Thunderbolts and they had Venom, Bullseye, Moonstone and Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, I'd allow it since they were all a team and newer figs for them haven't been made yet. Just like in a high point game if someone had Dr. Strange, Namor, The Hulk, Silver Surfer and Valkyrie for a Defenders team, they'd get the theme. As long as the substitution/addition is reasonable I'll allow it. Another example, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr. and Captain Marvel ALL have Fawcett City as a keyword when I run. They're the Marvel Family fer cryin' out loud!!

I am pure theme. I am usually in the final four and I win 25% of the time.
Are you my long lost twin? We have the same win ratio and play style! BROTHER!!
I'll play any team, no matter how bad, as long as it's theme accurate. In tournys I'll cheeze it up if I deem the prize valueable enough to even play for. Otherwise I usually only play sealed.
I selected "Purely Theme," even though the definition is not an exact match. I play all themes, but not strictly what's been "printed on the page." I'll come up with themes that have some comic plausibility... I like to do inter-company crossovers based around a concept (Monsters, magic-users, JLA/Avengers, and such), or oddball team gatherings (various Avengers, JLA, Marvel villains, etc.). I figure, since it's a comic book game, I like to focus on that side of the scenario.

Pure X-men!
I put competitively thematic. I try to stick to keywords non-generic keywords only for my teams. If I have to "Technically" break theme to use a better version of the same character(s), I will. I generally am not too heartbroken if I have to lose out on a reroll or two to make my team a little better. What's the point of having re-rolls when you are stuck using crappy versions of characters that can't make the rolls to begin with?

I have played a host of thematically accurate teams, as more sets have been released over time. The teams I have played:
Avengers
JLA
X-Men (several line ups)
Teen Titans
Sinister Six
The Society @ 1200 points!
JSA
I have played a few 4 Horsemen teams, using characters who have been Horsemen of Apocalypse.
The main two have been JSA and X-Men. One of the most fun teams I played was a Golden Age JSA team. I have varied line-ups on most of these teams too.
I now go for comic accuracy-if it appeared in the comics, that's what I want to play.

Mine would probably be casual theme since the main store I played at closed up. I play with a couple friends, and enjoy playing theme scenarios a lot.
Where we don't have a set point total. We've often played lopsided point teams so that we can get all of one team in a game vs some other team. Strangely it's still often been balanced.
When the store I used to play at was open, I used to really enjoy playing there as everyone always brought some sort of theme each week. For a while we went through the uber competitive phase, but after bringing the HSS yo-yo week in and week out, I got them to shift over to playing for fun over the prize. It made playing so much more fun.
