Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.
Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.
So, what say you all?
Next Film: ??????
And just to clarify, to those that didnt get it from the Will Wonka name over the Charlie title, this is the Gene Wilder film, not the Johnny Depp one.
10/10.
Instead of Good & Plenty, it's good and creepy!
Not even an artist like Depp could replace the edgy madness brought to screen by the one and only Gene Wilder!
Grandpa Joe and the gathering of brats were inspired casting, as well, and all the actors in this psychedelic masterpiece deserve accolades!
blazing saddles - 8.20 (14)?! only 8.20?! who are you people?!

Was just about to tell you to go vote there, but I see you already have, and gave it a 10. I agree (gave it a 9.50 myself), and its easily one of my favorite comedies EVER! But hey, to each their own.

It's insanely heartwarming with plenty of creepiness to boot (they censor that scene where they go down the chocolate river on cable).
8.5/10
After seeing the new version it amazes(and impresses) me with the production values on this movie.
yeah the new version is closer to the book, even down to the nut room but the kids characters seemed to be "better drawn" in this movie than in the remake.
And the Oompa loompa song is maddeningly addictive....
Oompa loompa doompa dee do
I've got another puzzle for you.
What do you get when the movie is great?
a 10 for the movie that's better'n the update.
:p

oh, the old movie was so GOOD! 10/10
the new one was nothing compared to it, as the movie went on, johnny depp was acting less and less like willy wonka, and more and more like michael jackson. eew. and they left out the candyman song!
Ive got to agree with the masses so far, this original Gene Wilder movie was a good deal more enjoyable than the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp one to follow it decades later (not that the second one was bad, but I didnt like it nearly as much as the original)
A family film that could entertain the kids, while occassionally creeping out the adults. :) Gene Wilder was the King of Comedy during this time, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein along with this one under his belt, helped make him one of the funniest guys in Hollywood. He did an amazing job making Wonka mysterious, dark, yet heart warming, caring and compassionate.
The supporting cast was excellent, the stages and effects hold up even today, and the Oompa Loompa songs (not to mention the other songs within) are literally timeless. I used to watch this every year growing up, and it never got tired to me. A true family Classic, no doubt about it.
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory - 9.25 / 10

hands down better then the remake (ripp-off).
a classic movie 9.25/10 ! It always makes me laugh...
What is it with Hollywood and making ripp-off movies nowadays ? and by being remakes they are almost naturally worse then the classics.
An enjoyable film that really only gets good once it gets inside the Factory.
I love the movie, but it's got some flaws that I have trouble seeing past: The really slow-going first hour, the incredibly creepy adults (and I'm not referring to the parents of the other winners...I'm creeped out by every other adult in the film.) and I think that 'ultimate message' of the movie is very mixed.
Plusses: Great acting from a great cast...including a perfectly bipolar performance by Gene Wilder, catchy tunes, and wonderful quotations.
My rating: 8/10 (3.5 stars)
Trick Question: Does anyone remember what the 'musical key' was?
hands down better then the remake (ripp-off).
Didn't Tim Burton remake the fantastic Planet of the Apes movie into that sbohp with Marky Mark a few years ago?

Oh and a big Thanks to Drunky and the itsy bit for getting into those oldie but goodie Rate The Movie threads, speaking their mind, and bringing them back to the forefront. I more than encourage ALL of us who see a film they havent rated, or was rated too low (or even too high) on the list at the bottom of these first threads, to do a quick Search for it and let us all know how you feel. One vote can make all the difference, so get to Searching for those you want to add to and RATE. :)

I'll give this one a 9. It's a classic, better in most aspects than the sequel. Gene Wilder was a much more effective Willy Wonka. Who doesn't love the Oompah-Loompah song? And Pure Imagination's a great song too.
This one is a little old, but I just noticed it's rating, and I want to bump it down a little. This wasn't that good of a move in my opinion, and it really didn't do justice to the book. I'll give it a 7

I'll second that. 9/10.
Trick Question: Does anyone remember what the 'musical key' was?
Here's the answer: 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' ...and not Rachmonanoff's version ;) I often wonder how many folks may wrongly be identifying that piece because of the movie :)

I was about to mention the slow beginning myself. It also features? the song "Cheer up Charlie" which wasn't exactly as catchy as the factory ones.
I'll give this an 8 as well. Despite being more of a departure from the book than its sequel, I like this version best. Mostly because of Gene Wilder's performance. He balanced the creepiness while Depp was just channeling pure creepy.

That film is my childhood. It's much less hollywood than the remake, Dahl should never be Hollywood.

I play this movie every so often at the Blockbuster I work at. Great movie with good music. A classic that outshines the remake and will stand the test of time, just like the Wizard of Oz. 9.5 out of 10 because some of the music is a little blah imo, but only a little.
