So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

CASABLANCA
xz9WPqyMSn8

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

Next Film: ??????

This is the definition of a classic.

Perfect 10.

I have to agree, as do most everyone who make lists of the greatest films of all time. This movie is in the top ten on every such list I've ever seen, and deservedly so.

10/10

It gets 10/10 for dialogue and acting, but there are one or two deep flaws in the story (as a result of how it was written). I deserves a 10, but I give it a 9.75 (4 stars)

I bought this movie about a month ago after watching the first half of it on television and getting flustered with it being interrupted by commercials. (I despise you CBC!)

After I finished watching it I went into the kitchen, got a glass of water, and started it up again from the beginning. I've never watched the same movie twice in a row, and I doubt I'll ever do it again.

To put it simply; Casablanca is the best thing to ever come out of Hollywood.

Consensus Rules 10/10
Perhaps one of the most compelling and "timeless classic" movies ever made.
The realism, heroics, comedy, drama, the characters all strike a chord that resonates within us all.

Ah, one of two movies that I own on both laserdisc and DVD (the other is The Last Temptation of Christ). Not only a great film, but an incredible snapshot of what the golden age of Hollywood could accomplish. The fact that this movie was made *during* the conflict that it chronicles, when the outcome of the war was still very much in question, makes it a perfect time capsule. One of the all time greats - fully deserving of a perfect 10.

Everything, perfect, dialogue, acting, cinematography, all of it. Perfect.
10. 'Nuff said.

Everyone else has already said it all, so I'll just concur.

10/10

On a related note, does anyone else know what movie adaptation of a comic book was actually a remake of Casablanca? I couldn't believe it when I realized what was going on. I figured it out about halfway through the movie.

I hate to be the one to say it, but every 10/10 for Casablanca is totally nullified IMO by all the many many other films rated here that were also given a 10/10.

Of the movies we rated, Casablanca is probably universally regarded in the top 10 cinema masterpieces by all students of films...yet Willy Wonka and the Chocalate Factory is going to remain within easy striking distance of it.

He's right! Can I change my score to an 11?

It isn't the only one, Ben Hur and Lawerance of Arabia are ranking lower or near to the Muppet Movie, the Godfather, Ghostbusters, Jaws, and Starwars.

We all have our personal favorites.

Anyways, it's a really iconic film, but I enjoy The Maltese Falcon more. Still, you just can't go wrong with a black and white Humphrey Bogart spy/film noir stype film.

9.5/10

Well, personally I consider the likes of The Godfather, Jaws and Star Wars to be Movie Legends, in the same Iconic range as Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Laurence Of Arabia, and a select few others. Personally Im a bit surprised The Muppet Movie is SO HIGH here, a Family Classic no doubt, but one of the greatest and classic movies ever made, Im not so sure.

You are operating on the false assumption that these ratings are supposed to be completely objective and signify the opinions of the entire world. It's not. This is HCRealms Rates the Movies, not the AFI Greatest Motion Pictures of all time. Fanboys and gamers who play with little plastic figures are going to have vastly differing opinions than the general public, and the fact that we all have quite a bit in common is going to mean that we all have similar feelings towards certain things.

I'm just asking for a little self-discipline. 1-10 is already a pretty huge scale for a 'non-objective' rating system.

Casablanca is amazing, and just gets richer each time you watch it, there are so many perfect little touches.

Anyone here not get all stirred up when the crowd drowns out the German soldiers with La Marseillaise?

A big 10 here

Casablanca is one of those classic films that should be on everyone's see list.

I give it a 10.

I can't think of a greater love story and it doesn't hurt that Ingrid Bergman may have been the most beautiful woman to have ever graced the Silver Screen.

It was good, but not obviously great. That old fashioned style of acting just annoys me. Maybe i'm young and stupid (but i'm obviously not).

I am surprised I missed this one, this film is one of the reasons that it is so rare for me to give out 10s. A 10 should be saved for the top 10-15 greatest films of all time, those very few experiences where you watch a movie and think "that was perfect, that is what all movies should be." For me this is one of those films.

The script is perfect, the acting is perfect, the soundtrack is perfect, the tight camera work that leads to such a sense of intimacy is perfect. I could just watch this rewind it and watch it again over and over (hells yeah I am still rocking the VHS).

I'll go with a big 10.

I don't get all the love for this film. I find it to be very boring and the acting is that theater type acting that was the style at the time. I've never made it more than 30 minutes into this snoozefest.
