So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

LORD OF THE RINGS:
THE TWO TOWERS

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

Next Film: ??????

9.5/10

I rated The Fellowship relatively lowly, but when part 2 came around I had accepted that there had to be some changes from the book.
And I love the Rohirrim.

2 was better then one. More action, more development, more awesomeness.

9.25/10

I really don't consider Two Towers to be a sequel, but part of a whole. I didn't like some of the story padding in this one, so I'll give it an 8.5

While I agree with batfink that you really can't technically consider The Two Towers a sequel, I thought there was less padding in this one than the first movie. This was full of good stuff, Gandalf's return, Gollum's double-sided personality, the friendly competition between Gimli and Legolas, the Battle for Helm's Deep.

9.75 of 10.

Can't rate this series of films because I'm just too biased.

Elves should never look like the pretty boy from Dawson's Creek with pointy ears!

Rankin/Bass for me, thanks.

I personally liked the first of the series (The Fellowship Of The Ring) the best, but ALL three of these films are truly cinematic classics. As a Die Hard Star Wars fan, and have been since I was a kid, I must say that Overall the 3 LOTR films are a better trilogy of films over even the original SW films (Return Of The Jedi dropped the curve a bit, where Return Of The King still held it strong)

The Two Towers was a great film, filled with everything I loved from the first film, and adding in some new characters and events to boot. The effects were unreal, the acting superb (something you dont often see in Sci Fi/Fantasy films), the story was great and the music top notch. When FotR ended I wanted to know more of what happened, and I got that in spades here with this film.

An excellent second part to one Classic film trilogy. Well done Peter Jackson, or should I say, Good on ya. :)

LOTR: THE TWO TOWERS - 9.50 / 10

 So true; however the movie was great. Brad Dourif makes a great Grima Wormtongue (remember him playing Piter De Vries;)? He's good when he acts sneaky perverted bad guy). The movie keeps on with the good work of the first one (there are still minor changes, but they work fine). And Gollum ... That is the kind of special effects that impress me. And Treebeard ... He's one of my favorite character in the book and he's just great!

9.25/10.

These are my favorite movies of all time. The whole trilogy. All 3 get perfect 10s from me. Great effects, great story, great acting, and it all flows beautifully.

Even though I enjoy watching the other two I think LoTR was the best. maybe because the things he left out I did not miss(songs? bleh! Tom Bombadil? double bleh!)
Amazingly, even though a previous poster had the movies ratings going higher, mine will actually drop for each movie as his changes grate more and more.
So;
Fellowship of the Ring; 9.75 (-.25 for the unneccesarily pc Arwen role)
Two Towers; 9.50 ( don't remember but there is a reason...)
Return of the King( ditto)

Copied my comments from the LoTR post.

So,
9.5 for me. Arwens role was completely unneccessary.
Helms Deep. What can I say negative about it except one small teensy tiny quibble:
Legolas choked. Super-archer choked up a hairball when it counted most.

(((Spoiler Warning))) for those who haven't seen it.....

When the Uruk-hai have placed the combustible material inside the drainage culvert and the runner is bringing the burning torch to detonate it Legolas has 2 or 3 shots to bing him down and coughs up a huge hairball.

So Legolas choked.

Since its September, and fall is just coming upon us, I tend to watch all 3 films during this time of the year. Having just watched Two Towers last night, I still give this, as the weakest for me of the 3, a 9. I loved Fellowship, and gave that a 10, and Return of the King will also get a 10. I was very critical of Two Towers when it was released, as I felt there were parts of the film that didn't "work" for me. Or PJ's film style on previous works (campy) came into play. (The aforementioned scene of the Uruk-Hai bomber. Couldn't they give him a far better torch so he didn't look like he was carrying a giant sparkler?!?!?!)

[SPOILER ALERT!!!!]

As far as changes to the films compared to the books, I for one loved them. I never understood as a kid, folks fixation on elves being "cool," when in the books, they come off as total pricks. "Um, sorry to hear Sauron's returning. Yeah, he'll wipe out all you humans. Anyways, we're out of here. Nah, besides a ring and doing a bit of cleanup, we can't do much for you. Good luck with the end of all times and that." Beyond giving Gandalf one of the 3 elven rings, and the reforging of Narsil/Anduril, the elves as a whole leave Middle Earth to get royally screwed by Sauron.

In PJ's film, at least some elves have a sense of global responsibility. To me, the elves who come to Helm's Deep with Haldir to fight alongside men were truely heroes. They have the promise of eternal life in the undying lands, yet come to help people who they owe nothing to. To me, that spoke to the nature of people working alonside each other in a common cause. So it wasn't "canon" to Tolkein's works. But Tolkein himself would say, on numerous occasions, that his writings were a living thing, for others to enjoy, explore, and to add to.

I love all 3 of these films, and quite frankly, I think the LOTR trilogy far exceeds even the original Star Wars films for me for pure enjoyment sake.

If people keep bringing up those blasted elves at Helm's Deep I may have to lower my rating.

I haven't read the books since just prior to seeing the first movie.......
I seem to remember the Elves did send a few elves to help at Helms Deep, didn't they?

I still stand by my score: 9.5

I liked Two Towers more than the Fewlloship - more action and more characterization.

Exactly, how about just rooting for the elves that did show up? :cross-eye

My least favorite LotR, but still great!

The two towers is the best movie in the trilogy, fellowship has to start things up with back story, and return of the king has to conclude things, but two towers is just stuff happening, events occuring, and it has ents. Whenever I watch that scene, I sing in my head "The ents go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah, the ents go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah..."

Lord of the Rings. Truly, the greatest story ever told.

I'll give it a 7.5

I remember probably about a minutes worth of this film. Big battle, started climbing the cliff, blonde girl and Wormtongue introduced. Oh, and Gollum.

6/10

The series as a whole is a bore, with the highlight being the last one. This one felt like a filler.

Hmmm. Well, no elves will be mentioned. However, I have to give two separate ratings.

Regular Edition of Two Towers - 8/10

Extended Version on DVD - 9.5/10

There's a LOT of stuff included in the Extended version that is glossed over or ignored in the regular version, that to me adds quite a bit of flavor.

Awesome movie, one I actually enjoyed more at the movies than I did the first. An amazing thing to see brought to life and the Battle at Helm's Deep was a great movie moment for me. Easily a perfect 10 from me.

You are saying that before you watched it...you knew it was so bad that
you would refuse to pay any money to see it?
Why did you watch it at all?

My favourite of the three by far, I am usually bored silly by action sequences and yet this movie has a 45 minute fight scene that I could watch over and over. This is the film in which we really get to know the characters and the world they live in and Peter Jackson delivers everything which such reverance and glee that you can't help but get wrapped up in it like you did when you first read the books as a kid. Everything about this movie blows me away.

Again, 10/10. Not much I can say about this movie, except that I loved it. The opening scene with Gandalf and the Balrog of Morgoth = wow. One of the best opening scenes for a movie ever. Helms Deep. Treebeard, all of the Ents actually. The Battle of Isengard. The Rohirrim. Joy :)
