This is my favorite Bond film. It has it all, gadgets, villains, exotic locals, dames, Sean Connery, witty lines, and so on.

Plus it's the first appearance of Blofeld, Specter #1.

9/10 for me. It, Thunderball, and Goldfinger are the quintessential Bond films. Oh, and love that theme song. It is also one of the better Bond books, for those of you who also read about Ian Flemming's hard boiled government Assassin.

Surprisingly it stays similar to the book, which is good, because Flemming's Bond is the best. All the other authors stink in comparison.

Sigh, I miss the steely eyed, cold, cruel, womanizer who smoked, drank, and had his way with women.

"Because he is an enemy of Specter and must therefore die!"

Man, all these Bond films really blur together when you haven't seen them for a while. It's a Connery Bond film though, and on the strength of that alone, it's gotta be at least, say, 8.25.

It's a Connery Bond so that counts for a lot....

Oh yeah!

Yeah.... he has definitely been emasculated recently......

This to me is the best Bond Film. Goldfinger gets the hype and he was underwater for too much of Thunderball and Dr. No was good as well but James Bond was a spy and this movie captures that Cold War feel and is a darn good spy movie as well. To me, a good Spy movie is one where you need to pay attention or you can miss important stuff. Quite a few of the Bond Flicks fall short of this criteria.......
And all of the Bond actors have their duds... IMHO.

Plus, that belly dancer is..........................................magnificent.
:love smiley:
edit: 10 because it's the best.

I don't think it is the best Bond film, nor do I think it is my favorite Bond film, but it is one of the best, and one of my favorites.

I rate it as 8/10 (3 star). It rates higher than I would normally give it if it were not one of the better films of the genre/franchise.

For my money, Goldfinger is probably my favorite Bond film, while On Her Majesty's Secret Service is probably the best of the Bond films.

From Russia with Love is not only my favorite Bond film, it's also my favorite Bond novel. FRwL was one of the more loyal transitions from page to screen, with the exception of inserting SPECTRE into the mix. Connery was the diffinitive Bond.

10/10

We've got some good Bond karma going here........

Is it me or did you forget to leave a rating again?

IMO, Moonraker lost almost all status in the Bond film canon after the Timothy Dalton "underwater w/no SCUBA -> Water Skiing -> Clinging to pontoon plane" escape sequence from License to Kill....after that escape, falling out of a plane with no parachute just didn't seem as impressive to me.

As a fan of the novels, Moonraker was particularly awful. The two stories shared a name and a few of the characters had the same name. Nothing more. Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me were excellent novels that were completely trashed in the film versions.

Moonraker's (the films) great claim to fame (IMO) was the opening sequence.

It also has the odd distinction of being a film I got to watch during Middle School...on film, as a school assembly in our auditorium! Talk about your weird educational choices!

Well, this film is not my favourite Bond film, but whenever I'm introducing someone to Bond, this is the film I show them. That's because this film is the definitive Bond film.

10/10

with the exception of inserting SPECTRE into the mix.

It was Smersh in the books, right? I seem to recall he fought both Spectre and Smersh. Smersh was the Soviet apparatchik if my memory hasn't gotten worse than it already is.
I remember, watching this movie on the TV set in the early 70's and when the teaser scene ends and you see who he's been stalking and who he succeeded against........ wow! ;)

A few years ago they put them on Moratorium and you couldn't find them anywhere except in those expensive huge boxed sets. The problem with those was if you already had a few and/or the boxed set had some movies you didn't want(Moonraker!).
I decided, to save money, I would only collect the Connery, Lazenby, and Dalton Bonds especially while sprinkling the other two.......
Like I really want Goldeneye. I think that's the best one for Brosnan and Live and let Die and For Your Eyes only are very good ones for Moore.

I actually have a hard time remembering a 'favorite' Roger Moore Bond film. I'm thinking that Octo##### has the most going for it, for me: Backgammon, a fight on top of a moving train, subtle messages about class/caste, a free-wheeling female ninja school, a subplot about jewelry thievery and a circus (including Roger Moore in a clown outfit!).

For Your Eyes Only isn't a bad choice either, except that I didn't appreciate the direct (opening sequence) and indirect (Topol's character, etc.) references/homages to the Lazenby film.

The last Bond film Die Another Day has a peculiar dishonor: I actually fell asleep during my first viewing of it. There is the surest sign that the franchise is in trouble.

Yeah the Moore ones have the problem of moving in a more Comedic direction.
Connory would have never swung through the trees while you heard a Tarzan yell. However, he did have some spiffy fashionable early 70's wide, short ties he wore....
Actually Connery's last one, Diamonds are Forever, which, while it was the first one I saw in the theaters is his weakest, and I usually only watch it for sentimental reasons.....
I like For Your Eyes only because you do have to pay attention to it but, yes, Octo##### is one of my favorite Moore flicks.. even with the Tarzan yell.
Yeah ForYourEyesOnly does have a particularly bad openiing sequence. I like the one on Octo#####.
Goldfinger is my favorite opening scene though because of the dancer and "shocking. positively shocking." as he's leaving.

Yeah, the last one was not that good. Something about the stunt scenes seems...... contrived. I know they are always contrived but the better films scenes don't feel forced.

I'm curious to see what happens in the new one due out this year.... I hope the actor takes it back to the way Connery and Dalton did it and gets away from Moore's (and, to a lesser extent, Brosnans) hijinks.

Personally, my favorite Moore film is 'The Man With A Golden Gun', although 'Octo#####' was decent as well.

Yes, Smersh was the Soviet Union's death squad. I've no idea why they changed it. I can at least understand why they changed the end of the movie from the end of the novel. That was a bit too much for a sixties audience to handle.

The bloody discontinuation of the classic Bond DVDs cost me a fortune when I finally got around to trying to find FRwL. I had to pay $30 for it on ebay! I'm with you. There was no way I was paying for one of those box sets full of lousy Roger Moore movies.

Since I couldn't find another Bond thread, how about a review of my favorite Bond film, "Casino Royale?"
