View Full Version : The Trophy Room The Trophy Room: Goblin Princess!
http://www.hcrealms.com/temp/HMSN_076.jpg
Sinister brought us another key member of Excalibur – that slightly unstable lady with some serious self-esteem issues; Meggan! Just as important, and courtesy of that REV we also finally get another critical member of the fabulous “Inferno” storyline, none other than the Goblin Princess! Come on in as we see how well this naughty noble compares with the “commoner” REV!
Here are the Goblin Princess' vital statistics:
Points: 86
Type: V Different
Clicks: 6
Range: 6
Targets:1
In order to really get a feel for the Goblin Princess let's take a look at a couple of dials:
LE Goblin Princess

LE Goblin Princess’s Gains vs. Veteran Meggan
As you can see from the dials above, this particular LE isn’t about gains and losses so much as she is about a complete and total powers change. The Goblin Princess picks up four clicks of Mind Control and Probability Control, three each of Telekinesis and Incapacitate, and two more clicks of three (3) damage.
LE Goblin Princess’s Losses vs. Veteran Meggan
The Goblin Princess drops everything we’ve grown accustomed to with regard to Vet Meggan. The Running Shot, Charge, Super Strength, Toughness, Shape Change and Perplex have all disappeared. One click of life is gone as well, as is the X-Men team ability and considering the character and storyline, very appropriately so. The last truly substantial loss is the fact the Goblin Princess never reaches an 18 defense, which would have undeniably afforded her a modicum of security considering that she is devoid of damage reducers.
Neutral Dial Tinkering
Nonexistent. These two figures are as different as different can be.
Cards that Work
The primary thing that makes me nervous about fielding the Goblin Princess is her naked 17 defense coupled with her six (6) range. She’s going to have to be uncomfortably close to the action in order to work her magic, and that could, and likely will, have a decidedly negative impact on her lifespan. However, considering that she has Mind Control for her top four clicks, the Extended Range feat could be a very sound investment. Since Mind Control does not deal damage, it’s effectiveness isn’t hurt by swapping out that meaty three (3) damage for a longer reach – all the way up to a range of nine to be precise. That will do wonders for her longevity by keeping her safely away from all but the figures with a range of 10 or greater. While the feat isn’t necessary to play the Goblin Princess, it would be of significant benefit.
Considering that she’s a flier and depending on the make up of the remainder of the team, Atlantis Rising could work wonders to bog down the opposition leaving the Goblin Princess completely unscathed. Another option would be Darkness to max out every figure's range at six thereby aiding the Goblin Princess without adding points.
If ol_Dut had to Choose
LE Goblin Princess vs. Veteran Meggan? Do you even have to ask? Faithful readers will know by now that ol_Dut is an absolute sucker for LEs that are completely different from their REVs . And considering that she is an interesting player from one of my favorite storylines, the Goblin Princess’ absolute necessity is further underscored. Before turning our attention to the beauty from “Inferno” let’s take a parting look at Meggan. Each of her incarnations provide interesting play options – especially so with the Experienced and the Veteran. Both of them are very potent combatants despite their short ranges, and both are very solid figures.
The LE is exciting as well. For some additional perspective, let's take a peek at the only HeroClix to feature the legendary David Lee Roth wardrobe malfunction, unique Goblin Queen (Ulitmates)!
U Goblin Queen
Team: No Affiliation
Range: 8 /

All things considered the two have very similar powers for very similar point costs with one major difference. The Goblin Queen goes a full seven clicks for 81 points whereas the Princess only has six clicks but picks up PC and Incap. For only five points more that’s not a bad trade-off. In fact, In every area except for the Queen's supremely saucy sculpt, the Princess is a better piece. First of all, we have the previously noted PC that the Queen does not have. Second, as both are hanging out there with no way to reduce damage, you must give the nod to the Princess who starts with some big 17’s on defense while the Queen has mere 16’s. Third she has more Mind Control than does the Queen, and fourth she has the late dial switch to Incap making her a danger to any piece she can hit for the entire length of her dial. While the Goblin Queen does have three more clicks of TK than the Princess, it isn’t enough to elevate her over her in the manner that her title would imply. In summary, the Goblin Princess is a must have in comparison to the Meggan REV, and also when compared to the Goblin Queen.
Not that the Goblin Queen isn’t good mind you, it’s just that the Goblin Princess is better. And for all of you theme team players out there, keep in mind that the Goblin Princess, the Goblin Queen and N’astirh weigh in at a tidy 292 points. Finally an all Mind Control team that’s comic book accurate! You can bet your KC Superman I’ll be running that trio around the board a few times to see how they do.
Quick and Dirty Price Tag
The Goblin Princess is cheap and easy, available for less than $10 in most instances. Not a bad price for one of the real must-haves from Sinister!
That’s all for this week. Thanks to Wolverine Hulk for showing an old dog how to do these fancy new dials. Thanks for reading! Next week even more Sinister!
She is one of my favorite LE's. She is three support pieces in one I feel. Granted all the versions of Meggan from Sinister were awesome. I can't wait to play the following team too.
N'astirh
Goblin Queen
Goblin Princess
Paramedic Rookie
Great review as always, these articles are one of the best reasons to visit HCRealms IMO :)
Super sweet theme team suggestion too (although the spare 8 points in my version will go on a somewhat more "heroic" choice than a paramedic, Protected :cheeky: )
This struck me as a very well-balanced review. Like many of her Seth-era counterparts, the Princess is not going to be near the top of any min-maxxer's list, but for theme players this is a great addition to the HeroClix arsenal.
Her Mind Control-Prob control top click (and later Incap/PC clicks) actually helps to mitigate some of the frustration about using "no damage" powers in the era of lower AV/higher DVs: Myself, I dislike using MC/Incap ESPECIALLY when I have a big risk of missing...and the PC makes those options a little more palatable (for me).
Now if we could just get S'ym!

Yeah, because nothing says "Inferno" like a rookie Paramedic. :cheeky:

I like her, she is completely different from the REV and seems fun to play, kind of like the LE Emerald Eye. The 6 range is a little crappy, same as the single target for incap and MC, but the TK, Prob, and third string attack slots are taken up by her, which gives her some good use.
She seems like a fun supprot piece to play, i still say the exp is the best of them for attack value though
Yeah, because nothing says "Inferno" like a rookie Paramedic. :cheeky:
Hey, I said I wanted to play it. I NEVER said I wanted to go strict theme. I prefer competitive theme over most. Plus, 8 points I can just pretend she is one of the mannequins from the scene with Phoenix.
Though I could ALWAYS play the We are in control army. Made up of figures with mind control and probability control
Emerald Eye of Ekron LE
Goblin Princess LE
Mad Thinker Unique
Calypso Veteran
Con artist rookie x2 OR Calypso rookie
The Paramedic (8 points, 4th figure on an otherwise 3-figure team) is totally ok in my book....especially considering that the theme was put in place with a mere handful of points left over.
I'm facing a similar build decision in my 'No Repeat' JLA travails for this week..I have a 600 point 6-figure JLA team with 12 points left over...including a Paramedic would make the already-defined team infinitely more competative, and would probably be the best use of the extra points.
I'm a 'no medic' type of team builder, but even so I can't deny that including some cheap support as a final use of the available points is a smart tactical decision.

Yeah this one LE I want the most, so I can field my Ghosts n Goblins team. I've pulled 1 vet, 2 exp, and 4 rookies of meggan, and would like to feild an entire team of them sometime. The Rookie helped me win a marquee with her Shape Change. Dodged 12 attacks on her in a row, it was amazing and I was using starter dice.

You could always throw a Protected card on instead of the medic. Not saying it's the best option, just an option.
Having Goblin Pricess out makes me want to make a demon-y team. Maybe throw some morlocks on the team as generic demons (shame we don't have Gargoyle from the Defenders yet). Ooooh! Or do some mixed set work and put N'astirh, Goblin Queen, Goblin Princess, U Hellboy, LE Etrigan, maybe a Blue Devil and then add morlocks and moloids to flavor. It would be big points, and I have *no* idea how well it would work together, but boy it'd be fun to see once!

Now I just need to get a Princess. :ermm:
When I won the Goblin Princess, I wasn't too thrilled about her. However, the more I looked at her the more I liked her...so I played her the next day and holy wow! She packs some punch! I agree with your review, she's a really good multi-support piece.
I hadn't thought about putting ER on her, either. Cool!

And if you're using all of them, you may as well toss in Hecate and Angelus for good measure. A fun team considering Halloween is on the way.
I really see a lot of potential for the Goblin Princess - both in her dial and in her making me play a buch of figures I wouldn't have otherwise. If that isn't the hallmark of a great figure, what is?

Just a little joke, nothing to worry about. R Paramedic is no more or no less Inferno than, say, eight Lian Harpers...

Ooooooo! I totally forgot Hecate. Silly since I remembered HB. Angelus I'd probably pass on, never been a big fan (based entirely on the character rather than the clix stats). But boy, this is getting more and more expensive. When you get into these points you tend to see KC Supes tricked out with feats. That would be... less than optimal for this team. :noid:

I totally agree. I'm a sucker for truly oddball LEs as well. Giving me an LE that is just better than the REV is great and all I guess, but I can sometimes feel twinges of guilt for min/maxing by taking the superior LE all the time. Making a unique dialed LE just gives me more options!
Now we just need a Goblin King and a Goblin Prince!

Okay, now I'm getting David Bowie flashbacks from Labyrinth. Great.
Ol Dut, I noticed that you mentioned in your review that you can use Extented Range with Mind Control. Has this been FAQ'd because I was certain you could not use the two together.
Nice review though anyway.

Well, nothing in the card text would indicate you cannot, and a quick look at the July 2006 FAQ states:
Mind Control is an attack that deals no damage, so range could be increased without suffering any adverse effects from having the damage value reduced.
One caveat though, also from the FAQ, is that you can't use Extended Range to increase the "default" MC range of 4 when you have a printed 0 range. The feat requires a non-zero range (although even if it didn't it should work like Perplex where you cannot bump up the "default" range since Perplex works on your printed value, so Perplexing once would change your range from 4(0) to 1, and the rule of three keeps Perplex from even reaching the "default" range).

There is nothing in the rules or PAC that would disallow it. In fact, it is specifically pointed out in Hair10's Heroclix FAQ document that Extended Range works great with Mind Control. That's good enough for me to plan on slapping ER on the Princess every time I field her.
ol'dut, good review, you do a good job of pointing out the strengths of the figure but I do disagree with one thing....
That Goblin Princess is worth it. I just can't see how she adds up to that many points. I've always thought the same about Goblin Queen. I would probably put in Princess over Queen but I don't see myself ever putting either figure in unless I was playing a strict theme team. She has such a glass jaw and can't do anything particularly well. She has nice damage down her dial but with that six range and an attack value that isn't too high it's not worth that many points. I'm surpised so many people like her, just can't see the value...
not bad....... I'll still play the Emerald Eye over the Goblin Princess..... just 'cause I like the Fatal Five.... :devious:

didn't the deamons had to have a bunch of babies to open up somekind of gateway between limbo and earth? so the 8 Lian Harpers could represent some of the babies. :noid:

I *think* Madelyne called Havok her "Goblin Prince" at one point during the Inferno, when he switched sides to join her. He could definitely join the team as well.

I used to put Extended Range on Shadow King for the same purpose mentioned here, but was told that it had been FAQ'ed that you can't use Extended Range with Mind Control. It wouldn't make sense,in my mind; MC is about the most use you're going to get out of ER....

Well, the review was good enough that I went out and bid on her on Ebay.
And I never do that.
Got her for a reasonable $6.05.
