So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?

Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all:

CLERKS II
gLvhJ0m5ask

Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.

Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.

So, what say you all?

Next Film: ??????

So uh......no one has seen Clerks II?

Oh, I imagine there were a few folks who've seen it but it's not exactly the sort of movie that inspires one to rush out and vote on it. There was a time I was in regular enough communication with Kevin that I had to watch darn near everything he put out/wrote just so he'd have feedback but, fortunately, my schedule is such that I got away without seeing "Clerks II" for the longest time...I'm still wishing I hadn't seen it.

The first "Clerks" wasn't greatly received because it was a spectacular story but because it brought to the screen some amusing bits with moderately interesting characters that mainly appealed to a certain demographic. It worked because it was the "icon" of Indy for its' time and the fact that it was a low-budget black-and-white movie was to its' advantage, not its' detriment. I wasn't a big fan of the first but I realized it deserved kudos for hitting the right audience in a way that so little pulled off so much. The new "Clerks" is pretty much the polar opposite in terms of production and I imagine while there were some die-hard Kevin Smith fans that are going to tell you anything the man does is gold (and blame "Gigli" on Bennifer-Mark-I or something), this show just felt like a rehash of his standard humour (which is sometimes really good - I enjoyed most of "Dogma" and "Chasing Amy" while strange definitely is well written) but backed by high-budget gloss. It's kind-of the "Phantom Menace" of the Kevin Smith films. I realize he tried to make fun of that fact in the film but, well, it fell flat (I give it higher than a zero - as I really did not like this movie at _all_ - because I also know part of the purpose of the film was to try and help Mewes during his "rehab" and noble intentions get points).

Score: 2.0

I liked the posters I saw in the theater...but sad to say, as much as I liked some of Kevin Smith's films...he's fallen into the category of filmmaker where I say to myself "I'll catch it on Comedy Central in a couple of years."

For example, I've got an "ok" feeling about Dogma, but if I'd paid money to see it in the theater...I'd probably have very mixed feelings about it.

I'd actually like to see Kevin Smith tackle a completely different film genre (Murder Mystery? Action?)...I get the sense that his talent really shines when he's excercising it beyond his expected bounds.

His runs on "Daredevil" and "Green Arrow" shows that he can definitely work outside the realms of Comedy-Drama and I do think he could put together a wicked film noire...it just might take him 17 years to finish it. ;)

(And before people point out that Kevin at least poked fun at his "selling out" in "Clerks II", remember it's easy to make fun of ones' self when you're getting a nice fat paycheck. Heck, Alec Baldwin and William Shatner have made second careers out of it. :) )

Keep in mind were not just looking for members who loved such films on these RtM threads. If a movie stunk, we also want to here from you all as well. So if youre seen this one (unfortunately I myself have not as yet), even if you hated it or thought it was dumb, come on in and speak your mind. As always, the more ratings here, the better.

I watched it at a friends house a few weeks ago.

It was alright. it doesnt really contribute to the movie making community or anything but it was pretty funny. Id give it a 3.5 out of 10.

we came to an agreement that:

Boning a donkey would not be cool.
Rosario Dawson is freaking hot.
We need to take porch monkey back.
And that Sam and Frodo are totally gay with each other.

"Heh. I just made fun of the lord of the rings so hard it made some supergeek puke all over the counter. where do we keep the mop and bucket so I can make Elias clean it up?"

Elias: The Transformers are a gift from God, Randal!
Randall: Oh no, sir. The Transformers are a curse from the beast we call The Desolate One.

You should make that an officialy vote for Clerks and go do so on its actual thread, as remember these olders ones are always up for additional voting (as is Empire Strikes Back, something your fanatical SW vote was sorely lacking on) :)

First time reader, first time voter (ahahha never said that line before) I like Clerks II alot more than the first. I got tired of the "i'm not even supposed to be here" real quick, but it was a funny nod in the second. I never knew that was a racial slur, but when I went home to see if it was, turns out pretty much every word is! The LoTR portion is what made it the best. That's EXACTLY how I felt about the movies. "There's only one Return, and it's of the Jedi not the king" is a PRICELESS line that I'll never forget.

Overall, I'm going with a 9.0 (only because I could have lived without the flashing scene)

This seems like a fairly positive review, and it only rates 3.5?
I'd have thought these comments would rate it at least a 5.
I thought it was an enjoyable film too.
To my mind that puts it in the upper half of the 0-10 scale.
Let's say 8.25

Second best Kevin Smith flick yet, and I'm not a big fan.

My list:

1.) Clerks
2.) Clerks II
3.) Dogma

[miles and miles in between]

4.) Mallrats
5.) Chasing Amy
6.) Jersey Girl (which I refuse to see on general principle)

You know, I was so avoiding seeing this movie because I loved the first one so freakin much. I didnt think it would be half the movie that the first one was.

God was I wrong. I think this movie was definitely on par with the first. Loved it as much as Clerks part uno, and I thought Elias was hilarious. Now, If only Broken Lizard could live up to their own standard :tired: .

Clerks I 9.0
Clerks II 9.0

Could have done without the nice bow on the end though.

Well, I FINALLY saw Clerks II last night (on this very PC no less), and I must say that I was really disappointed in this film (probably my least favorite of Kevins Smiths films as a whole, and YES I saw Jersey Girl)

Im actually a big fan of Smiths, as is my wife (one of the things wed like to do next trip to America is visit his comic store, knowing he wont be there of course, in NJ), but be that as it may, that doesnt mean I have to blindly like everything he does.

This film simply put, wasnt funny, and borderline stupid in many parts. I think the parts I gave a bit of a laugh to involved either Star Wars, LOTR or the Transformers (as Im a geek and big fan of them all) The characters were stupid, the situations moronic, and the laughs (even slight chuckles) just didnt come very much, if at all, in this one.

Hugely disappointed in this one, and this from someone who rated the original Clerks an 8.75 / 10. This one, from me, gets a much lower rating (though not quite at RKs 2, sheesh man, even just the comic geek jokes earned it at least a 3 :p)

Clerks II - 5.50 / 10 (and Im sure Im giving it a point because Im a big Smith fan)

After hearing lots of bad stuff about it, I decided to get the Clerks II DVD just because it's one of two Kevin Smith movies that I don't own. (The other one is "Jersey Girl", which I try hard to pretend never existed.) Anyhow, in spite of all the bad rap, I wound up liking 2 as much as the first. In some ways, it was better because we finally got a little depth on Dante and Randall. Elias is hilarious - he is "Clerks: The Next Generation." OK, so we didn't get some scenes like the Chewlies gum salesman and the ex-girlfriend who bones the dead guy in the store bathroom. All the same, I feel that Clerks II held its own and was a nice nod to the last decade of Kevin Smith's work. So here is my rating for it: 8.5, with the first one being a solid 9.

Snootchie bootchies, y'all.

One point minimum rating.
One point for Jay.
One point for Silent Bob.
Two points for the LotR parody.
One point for Pillowpants.

2.0 and 3.5???? Are you guys on drugs?

This was one of the best movies of 2006 in my opinion. It is also one of the funniest movies of my generation. Rate it for what it is, not what everything else is. If you want to see an action movie...it is not for you, but if you want to see a comedy..bar none it is the one for you.

I easily give this movie a 9 out of 10.

Now someone go and make me an Egg a' Mooby sandwich....

While I dont think Clerks II deserved THAT low a rating, I will say (even as a Huge Kevin Smith fan) that this film was massively disappointing to me, with laughs that came way to few and far between, and situations and conversations that were more stupid than funny. By far, my least favorite Smith film, and Ive seen them all.

Clerks 2 gets a 9.0 from me...I have never laughed as much as I did. Randal made that movie....

7/10 I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but it really doesn't stand up to the earlier Jersey movies in quality. If this was by anybody else I would have given it a higher rating but for Kevin Smith and for it being Clerks 2, I just expected better.

Are you saying that Jersey Girl was better than this???? Oh man!!!!

DTM
10/13/2007, 00:22
Eh, Jersey Girl was different really, a bit more serious than his View Askew stuff, but yeah, I kinda enjoyed Jersey Girl more than I did Clerks II, which reminds me of older guys going into a club they used to frequent in their younger years, hitting on girls, and failing miserably.
