;) Just made this thread for pinoys interested in mods.

Queries from a tinkerer for a fellow tinkerer:

1. What's the best agent for heroclix paint removal?

2. And what putty would you suggest for such small figs that can be sculpted with detail? (i'm currently having difficulty with my accustomed putty (cord epoxy and cord waterstop) which i have been using for many years now for bigger figures.)

Thanks in advance.

Ako na nga lang magbabahagi. (solo flight muna habang walang pumapansin)

TroubleShooting Guide muna:

>Frequently Falling Flying Figures: If you don't like gluing your fig to the flight stand, you can heat the peg(s) on your fig and applying pressure at the bottom of the pegs after heating. Just be careful not to burn the paint. (Kukulo yan at mangingitim!). Move the peg as you heat it.

>Michael Jackson figs : By heating (see above) you can restore your figs to their original pose. (para sa mga nadaganan, naupuan, o natapakan, at maging sa nasagasaan!) Nakakainis kasi tingnan ang nakatuwad at nakaliyad di po ba? (or maybe it's just me!)

>Non-zombie zombie figs : Broken figs are easily glued together with good old loctite or mighty bond. (wag yung palengke brand). For added strength, roughen up the parts to be glued together. (a nail file or sandpaper will do just fine)

>Dial Problems :
1.Non-clicking heroclix. You can fix this problem by snapping the turning disc(yung may sticker ng combat values) off the other disc(yung pinagdidikitan ng fig). Heat one of the snapping locks and apply pressure inwards. (konting baluktot lang) Snap the inner disc back in and you're done. (repeat if nesessary)
2. Unaligned stickers. Once you get the hang of it, snapping the click discs off is pretty easy. Just use a blade (cutter), or a very small screw driver. Just use one of the snapping locks(yung parang ngipin na nakapalibot sa ring) as a fulcrum.

Yun na muna siguro. Thanks for reading.

Yeah. It's just that konti lang ang skilled sa modding dito. But now that you've brought up fixing figs, here's how I do them:

>Frequently Falling Flying Figures: In the absence of a heater, what I usually do is I apply a very thin layer of glue to the peg and let it dry. It makes the pegs a bit thicker. In the absence of a glue, a small strip of scotch tape will do. But this one's a bit unreliable. In the absence of scotch tape, borrow one fig from your Judge (I suggest Conrad) and swap it with your fig when you return it. Bwahaha.

>Michael Jackson figs: My very primitive method way of bending it the other way around doesn't work that well. Maybe I'll try the heating technique. By the way, what do you use to heat the figs? Well, I can always do the swap thing with Cons.

>Non-zombie zombie figs : Hey! Ok naman yung palengke brand! 10 pesos lang isa. Nasiritan pa ako sa mata one time, buti na lang low class at hindi nagdikit ang mata ko. O di ba? Usually zombie figs get modded. You can try swapping figs again with someone else but I would suggest not. Haha.

Thanks guys!

Nga pala, when heating, use a smokeless source of fire. Me, I use a disposable cigarette lighter.(may ilaw pa!)

Still need help with putty though I managed to complete my Superwoman Darna last Christmas with Cord waterstop.

Bonus:I recently discovered almost dry rugby would make a good flame effect then covered it with clear nail polish for that extra gloss. But then again a glue stick with transparent paint still delivers the best results.
Pero kung tinatamad, rugby will do.

Thanks again and happy new year to all!

>Michael Jackson figs : A trick I learned from my friend Hope is using scotch tape. It's basically bending it the other way around, but instead you put in it's correct position, and tape it, usually starting from one edge of the dial to the head and then to other edge of the dial.

You know how Armor Wars Marrina is always almost bent during packaging? This method fixed my fig quite efficiently. The only catch is I had to leave it scotch taped like that for 3 days before she learned how to stand up straight.

This method also works for swords like that of Raza, Swordsman and other figs with bent weapons/equipment.

use a hair dryer or dip the figure in a cup of hot water then u may fix it into the original position, kc if you use scotch tape, may tendency yan mag crack...

Thanks for the tip GatX. Actually, I only use the scotch-tape method on the rubbery figures like Marrina, and the recent ones like some of the Sinister Nons. The older figs are admittedly too brittle for that method.

Hehe thanks for the tip GatX! i never thought of doing that, often i'd keep in bent in a position for some time, but i never tried it on the figs from IC, they were just too solid...

This sounds like the trick Gundam modelers use for the clear plastic parts too, hehe so it works!

Just more tips:
My nephew broke and lost Taskmaster's sword. Ofcourse one could easily replace it with a duplicate fig.
But for those without dupes(like myself) or a clear flat cable tie (yung mga nasa action figs) could easily replace broken swords. If you're into model kits(like me) sprues(yung pinagkakabitan na frames) will do the trick(with a little cutting ofcourse).
Broken Flight Stands: best solution is replacing them from an unused flying fig. but if you're out, you can glue a small piece of straw(yung sa fruit juice) at the end. This way the figs will still be removable while attaining the strength of a new flight stand.

Nga pala, I still need an alternate putty and help with paint removal. Any suggestions?

Thanks again in advance!;)

Got this tip from a modder here in HCRealms

What I do now, is get two paper towels, one on top of the other and lay them down on my table. Then I take half a shot glass and fill it with acetone. I get a half a dozen cotton balls and Q-tips and use those to remove the paint. I dip fluff them up slightly, dip them into the acetone and dab the acetone onto the figure. Let it sit for just a second and start gently wiping and swabbing the paint right off with the wet cotton. When the cotton ball or Q-tip is full, pitch it and grab another one. It takes several to get one figure neat and clean, but it is easier on the plastic by far, and with enough swabbing you can get them even cleaner.

if you feel the plastic starting to take on too much acetone stop for a few minutes and let it dry out. taking your time makes it easier.

Don't dip the figs into acetone because it will damage the plastic...

For putty, I know i've seen some at one of those hobby craft stores in megamall... the one across Comic Quest....

Hope this helps... :p

More tips:
Nail polish is corrosive. However after painting, coating the eyes or gems or whatever you like with it delivers the best gloss (mura pa). Works well with pastel colors too.(glows in blacklights) Don't worry. I've tried it on action figs and model kits.

Problem with glued figs?

Nail polish remover is the answer!
(I don't know if you already know, but for me it's a new discovery)
Simply brush it on and let it react for a few seconds and presto! Your glued fig will pop off with relative ease. (To think I bought those superglue removers before!)
And it does NOT damage those clear plastic flight stands.

As a side note: Happy birthday judge ecchs!

Whew! Its been a while. Just adding the stuff I made last february.

Making a lamp post:

Tetra pack juice straws mounted on a 5 cent coin with a bead topping it. Pretty easy and cheap to make. (it will pretty much look like the NGN Spidey post). If you use putty you can hand mold the base, but gluing them to coin base pretty much works.

Making cheap trees(with hindering terrain marked bases):

Got an old christmas tree, chop it up and trim as desired. Glue it on to a 1.5 by 1.5 inch card base.(I used the prepaid cards as plastic is tougher than cardboard). Glue the 'tree' in one corner of the card base to allow figure placement. So that it doesn't topple over you might want to add a little weight like a coin on the card.

Making cheap grass (no, not the puffable kind):

You can basically ask for saw dust for free. You can either dye it green (so you can paint the highlights) or just paint it over after placing them on bases(preferrably with rubber cement).

Th-th-that's all for now.

Man I really love GI Joes (the 3 3/4 inch kind!) I really haven't been on the toyhunt lately. But I really love the Trio of Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness and with 2 Crimson Guards, they're the only surviving members of my 'elementary days' collection.

Yes,I have been on a HASBRO boycott eversince I stopped buying GI Joes. THE SAME goes to MATTEL. Oh, I would have loved to collect DC Figs, they're just so 'backwards' in comparison to Marvel Legends and the ridiculous price tag!!(sigh)

The acquisition of toybiz by Hasbro spelled the death of my action figure collection. The degradation of the Spiderman 3 figures are previews of years to come. Smaller and LESS Articulation. (sigh again)
Sorry, I just HAD to get that off my chest. I hope their sales drop to death.

The only figure I'm considering buying from Hasbro's Marvel Legends is the Planet Hulk figure. Not that I really bought Marvel Legends when it was still with Toybiz...

DC Direct's toys are for display purposes only, hence the severe lack of articulation compared to Marvel. But I like the fact that they're solid, and stand up better than a Marvel Legends toy. Yeah, I can pose Wolverine in so many different ways, but he won't stand up properly in the action pose I want. At least Batman will ALWAYS stand up.

Dr.HellCustom
06/20/2007, 11:10
You are absolutely right. The thing is I always tinker with my Figs, and I ALWAYS have to fix some joints on the Marvel Legend Series from Toybiz. It never occured to me but somehow THAT tinkering probably evens the cost of Marvel vs DC Figs. Still 349.00 (with accessories, base/ and/or BigFigPart) vs 799.00 (with little or no Accessories) is still a HUGE gap for similar products. (by the way, my DC Direct Batman JLA seems to suffer Ledge Jumping too, so does the DC SuperHeroes Scarecrow and Bane really has this stupid look that I mangled and straightened out his legs for a more towering monster look).
I just remembered...AHHH wala akong Darkseid! Curse you MATTE....

Another thing, I AM perhaps the only STARWARS FANBOY that does NOT support their toyline simply because of their refusal to IMPROVE on the figs articulation despite the increasing cost. If only they made them similar to the GIJoe Line, perhaps I would have had a little more than the Emperor and Stormtrooper I bought before I pledged to Knowing is half the battle!

MAKING FIGS STAND UP:
If you're not into 'operating on' your figs, you can use BLU TACK (another free ad!). A sticky, non toxic putty. It's similar to the tracing paper erasers I used in college, or bubblegum. If dust collects, you could just wash it w/ just water and it'll be as good as new.

The only Star Wars action figure that I have (aside from the stuff you get in happy meals) is Princess Leia in her slave costume from Return Of The Jedi ;-).

kung tagtipid ka dawg sa national bookstore meron un japanese paint brush na maliit ok un mga 20php. kung trip mo for hobby kits talaga sa mga tamiya shop hobby shop 120php. ganun din for paints ok na un acrylic paint sa national meron price range from 40-80php. sa hobby shops naman 75 per bottle pero maliit lang un eh pero good quality.

I used to buy german Sable brushes for about 40 to 80 Php from bookstores, they last quite a bit(a couple of months) BUT lately haven't been available for soooo long. But I must recommend the 120 PHP and above Brushes as they last for about a year or a little more. Among the 'expensive ones I've tried, the Citadel Brushes (GamesWorkshop of Warhammer fame) are the ONE. They may cost 200+ BUT they can be abused(I mean maltreated and STILL retain their 'perfect' shape even when used with diff. paints. like lacquer auto paints) Mine lasted for over 5 years. Though the lack of supply lately has 'forced' me to try Tamiya Brushes (175PHP), which are actually good, though it certainly is NOT as durable.
As for the paints, if you're willing to spend a little more, Citadel Paints are very easy to use and are waterbased, but more importantly, it does not 'fill' very small details.

There... another free ad! ;)

Post Script:
Art is definitely right about the 'chinese brushes', they are disposable but they are good. AND they cost very little. ALSO never buy NYLON brushes. (yung mga nasa sets for 30 to 50 PHP. Kahit dasalan yun ke Hesus o Satanas e hindi didirecho yun.
Actually sabihin mo lang Sable brush maganda na yun lalo na kung sabihing Natural yun. Yung Citadel nga pala kaya mahal e Squirrel hair (if I remember right) yun.

About paints, Check the Viscosity. Pag sobra, e malamang pag apply mo nun puro magiging 'Questions' yung mukha, tataba or worse maging 'Clayface pa sa lapot'.

ANyway thanks for the TIP with the brushes. ACtually, napansin ko rin na wala sa NBS yung mga brushes nila na mga around 100. Yun yung gamit ko

I agree with Dr. Hell about the sable brushes. I use red sable brushes for miniatures and the tip stays straight.

Tamiya acrylics are good - nice finish.

Clicking the shallow H in the Avengers Set:
Yes, we've all seen it, have it, and tried to click it.
Kung nahihirapan po tayo, try this:

Put on a rubber or foam double adhesive tape on one side of your circular 'line of sight' retractable Id straps. Cut it so that it's length is a little less than the diameter of the bottom of the click ring.
Try applying two or three layers of these tapes then try to lose the exposed side's adhesive by touching it repeatedly OR rubbing it on your face:laugh:

If you don't have the above materials, try flooding your click ring with rubber cement. Let it dry. (though I haven't tried this before) OR you could sand your click ring flat and apply the double adhesive (rubber or foam) tape there.

Hope this helps.;)

If ever I decide to give Silver Sable (MM) some plastic surgery (yes - its literally PLASTIC surgery) - which figure's face should I use?

Don't get me wrong - it's a nice sculpt, but someitmes her face looks like a puppy to me.

Do you think I could use any of the origins females?

if you can get a rookie Jewel from SINISTER, she'll be a great parts provider (I mean great body, pose and all that!). THE SCULPT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I loved it so much I couldn't cut her!
She's common and presumably very cheap.
Anyway, I haven't really been into chop-chop transplants since I used a criminal on M.Bison's head. (and that was my very first custom!)

Freefall- Maybe Phantom Girl for Freefall (she never really used her powers much in the early days, and only for protecting herself most often) or Jakeem Thunder(for the shared defense, incap, quake, and prob/perplex which is closer to the potential of Gravity control) or major Disaster(once JLA is out)

Grunge - tough call... Plastic Man (for the wacky dial... except Grunge wasn't a flier)or Parasite(with the absorbing powers schtick) might work but if it were up to me... LE Sinister Venom with his rainbow dial.

Lynch - Nick Fury(Sam Jackson verison of course) or Forge

GLUED FIGURE REMOVAL:
With the recent releases, the old nail polish remover trick will not be as effective...I learned that when I acquired the LOSH starter.

Time to move on with the times.
We are obviously seeing a flooding of glue by WK so for the LOSH figs I used Acetone.
Ah yes... the paint smudging, figure melting, clear plastic breaking acetone... so I strongly suggest that you be careful.

Just brush a little acetone and let it seep down in the flight stand(make sure YOU DON'T apply acetone ON the flight stand itself) BUT you must move/pull/twist the fig immediately after application. Because once the acetone dries... you'll have to do it again(and we all know how fast acetone dries don't we?) I got 5 out of 7 LOSH out this way. Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad simply would not budge...UPDATE I got ALL of the LOSH figs out. Try to weaken the acetone by leaving it uncapped for a few (5?) minutes... OR watering the acetone down.

Hope this works for you too! Ü

Fixing a broken peg or leg: (kuripot edition)

I got all of the LOSH fliers out thru my last Glue Removal Tip. Yay!!!
But Saturn Girl broke off her foot and peg... and so I will share how I her injury healed....and She's good as new too!

All you need are two pliers to hold the pin and the peg that broke off.
Cut a pin(aspili) to an appropriate length... say 1.5 cm then gently dent the pin so that it will stay in place much better within the plastic part using the pliers' wire cutter. Be careful NOT to dent too deeply so that the pin will not break easily. Repeat denting as desired but do not overdo as the pin might bend.

Then stick it in the very center of the leg of the figure then take it out then apply superglue then stick it back in. Make sure you allot enough 'exposed' pin length as you stick it in the plastic with superglue. Then stick the part that broke off thru the pin in the same manner as aforementioned.(first w/o glue then with glue). If the pin happens to stick out, you can cut the excess and push it back in (with another pin) and it will almost disappear into the plastic.

That's it for tonight. Good fight and good night!

you really know where to start
fixin a broken... leg or arm?
:p

You know what, the glued up flying figs do eat up a lot of space, aren't there any alternatives aside from the deadly acetone? I mean anyone discovered anything in Ace Hardware or True Value? Any non-risky glue solvents?

Dr.HellCustom
09/27/2007, 10:12
If it would help, try 'weakening' the acetone by leaving the cap open for 15 minutes. That's what I did on my second try on Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. AND it doesn't ruin the flightstand...hmm forgot to mention that in the past article.

As for alternatives, Shops sell glue removers...(which I found out... hmm.. eons ago...that had the same effect as acetone. I don't know of any new ones out in the market right now though. Sorry.)

I've been going over the post's re: removal of glued figures and it occured to me that you guys are overlooking the simplest way to do it.

Have a cutter and a steady hand? If you also have similar flight stands available then try it this way.

Pop of the flight stand from the base. Most of them go off as a single piece. Then using the cutter carefully cut around the figures flight stand where the fig is glued. You have to be able to do full circle lest the plastic will not break.

When you're left with a bit of flight stand near the peg holding the figure. make another cut, this time to cause the plastic to crack, then it will be a matter of patience to chip of the remaining fragments. Cleanthe fig if you'd want to then glue an undamaged flight stand where the original once was. More often than not it would be almost impossible to distinguish it from how the fig originally looked.

With the new releases of figs, acetone will damage the fig and flight stand. THis way, though a bit crude, and a lot cheaper than buying glue removers, also works well. I've done it for Cosmic boy, angel, lightning lad and young superman so i know it works.

Sometimes the simplest solution is really the easiest to work with.;)

Exacto knife - you can buy a set in any hardware store.
Green stuff/Putty - wala pa akong nakitang Green stuff dito. Putty (Tamiya Putty) - hobby stores in Festival Mall, Makati Cinema Square, Ali Mall, Greenhills, ATC and Megamall.

I also suggest you buy a pin vise and drill bits. You can buy this in the hobby stores under the brand name: Academy.

Green putty? I think Neutral grounds has some. Small pack with about 4 strips of the stuff. I remember seeing one a while back. But mind you putty in general is expensive. Going rate was about 500-800 when i last saw some, then there's also which type pf putty to get. the green stuff i think just dries up. others you have to bake.(which might not be what you're looking for, but it's the most common out there.)

I don't think so. I think the green putty from NG dries on it's own. I'm not sure whether Milliput or sculpey needs to be baked though, but most likely not. Sculpey cost 500, milliput costs 300. Sculpey is rare from what i know. Here at least:p

Congrats Cons! Flutaragis! Ang lupit mo pala mag mod!
Miss ko na pagsilip dito sa HCRealms ah! Again, congratulations!

Hopefully sa Nationals eh makalaro ulit ako. I'll be bringing my doom machines! ;)

TIP:
Add lang ako ng info sa painting tip ni darkjacen.

Light paint over dark paint is called drybrushing. The highlights are applied last and you have to 'dry' the brush a little with a tissue or cloth before applying the paint. EXAMPLE: you paint black first on batman, then after the paint totally dries, you apply the grey, on the reliefs...(like formed muscles) without totally covering the black. And lastly you apply white on the highest reliefs of the figure where you'd like to simulate light striking on it. Like knee caps or tips of the nose.

Drybrushing is easier with a bigger brush, (like a no. 3), and water based acrylic paints. This technique brings a cleaner finish than using ink wash or watered down paints to show the details of the sculpt.

Yun lang po. Hope this helps.

Nice dude - I like Dr. Fate the most.

I agree with insulares. Dr. Fate's done well. Nice how you used mythical looking beasts as part of the rubble. It's a lot better than the old lifeless sculpt of fate.;)

Dehins na bro. matagal na. Nagresign na ako 2 years ago. Recruitment Consultant ako sa isang Corporate Search Firm. and before that hinawakan ko advertising ng etelecare sa Philippines. :)

Thank you Dark Jacen and Insulares. :)

Just wanted to share my newest Stikfas mod - OMAC  Paint-wise, he turned out much better than mu Iron Spidey custom, and the good news is, no breakage of parts after sculpting and painting him.

For members of Multiply, there are more pics here.

OMAC is also my entry to one of the contests in Toy Collector, so if you can vote, give him a high rating, I'd greatly appreciate it. You can see him in the Toy Collector website here:

Nice! How did you make the head?

Thanks. :classic:

I used: EpoxyClay Aqua - molds like clay, hardens like steel. hehehe. ;) Pioneer should pay me for plugging their product in this post.

I kept on adding the clay, let it dry and bake for a day, then added more clay until I got the fin. Then I kept sanding it down to the final shape that you see in the pictures.

If you intend to do this a lot - you might want to invest in a dremel tool - it makes sanding and cutting easier.

theres a cheap substitute for a dremel tool. ACE Hardware is Selling a JML Rotary tool set(basically similar to a dremel with lower power output) for only 1300. this is what is commonly used by filipino customizers. :)

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out on my next trip to the hardware store. I'm already working on my third Stikfas mod.

just dip the deformed part in hot water to soften it a bit (ingat lang baka mapaso ka hehe), then while still warm move the part back to its preferred position and set it in place, then dip it in cold water para magstay na sya sa ganung position. Kaunting trial and error lang. I hope that helps! :)

Hi,

i am looking for a rock or any rocky-like surface na pwedeng lagyan ng figure ng warhammer (porma lang), i've started playing warhammer and would like to add a little something sa mga mods ko.

Sinong ok na heroclix fig pang chop-chop for rocky terrain/ other terrain parts?

thanks for the suggestions :)

Charles, you can try styro. It's easy to get and work with. Or if you want from clix, try Crimson Fox. You might have to cut the rock a bit to make it look different and then just paint it to make it look more uniform.

dati nung may vampire army pa ko, ginagamit ko sa terrain at bases tunay na bato. Brush clean with alcohol or acetone, then paint. Sa starter Döom ko ginamit kong boulder yung plastic pastel colored 'rocks' for gardening and aquariums.

went back to using gunze paints. Citadel paints are very easy to use but have become a luxury. Oh and NBS now carries sakura brushes once again (triple 0 included). Sig updated too.

I have recently discovered a cheap alternative to give figs a lusterless finish. php 159.00 lang 'dull clear' rj london paint? Right beside bosny at Ace hardware. Acrylic epoxy so it doesn't rub off easily.
