Ok gang,

Who wants to play fantasy baseball this year?

I'm setting up a league on CBS sportsline. It's a free league with live scoring. Sounds fair to me. (No Longer going with Sportsline. Their "Free" league costs 129.95. Sorry, but I'm switching to using ESPN.)

Post here, and PM me if you are in, and suggestions for league rules. I'd like 16 teams, 4 divisions, 4 teams each. I've set it up as a "keeper" league, and if it works, great. If not, no big loss in my opinion. We can try something else.

LMK if interested. I wanted to start early so that we get a chance to get folks enough time to get in.

Later!

Ok gang,

THE LEAGUE IS SET!

All 16 members are in, and the owners can be viewed here

Draft is currently set for March 8th, 8pm CST.

Always room for noob's. Especially if its a money league. ;)

But since this isn't a money league, no worries. Just give me a team name and we'll get you in on the list.

Hey, I'm in for fantasy baseball again. Mark me down as Team SDMF.

I'll make sure that I don't draft Bonds again this year. Man, what was I thinking last year???

And Jack, don't worry, as long as Gacy plays again, you know that you won't have to worry about coming in the cellar.

Have you considered Yahoo? Just curious because its free and has a great customizeable scoring system. I use it every year and it would be really convinient....

But CBS is cool too...

The ability to change my roster three times a day was the only reason that I didn't come into last place last year. Well, that, and I drafted Barry Bonds... I still don't know what I was thinking...

We used Yahoo last year, and I liked it fine, but I guess that Front prefers CBS. Meh. I'm not worried about it...

The only problem I had with yahoo was they were horrible for information, as far as trades/injury status/etc. I had a player on my team who had come off the DL, only I wasn't able to use him for 2 days after returning. During that time he hit 3 HR, drove in 5 RBI.

*sigh*

I am interested, but would like to know the rules upfront. I do not wish to particpate in a league that changes format 2-3 times during the season like the football one some of us were in this year.

Changed from head to head to weekly points.
Points changed sevral times during the year, etc.. it was very frustrating.

I assume we will have to do a auto-draft as well.

Oh, I fully agree on the rules not switching. That's why I'm willing to start this so early, so we can hammer out any problems prior to the draft. (Which would be auto, as its impossible to get 5 gamers in the same place online, much less 16.)

This is why I really like Yahoo. It gives you the option to pre-rank, live draft, etc. Plus if you cant make the draft, it will go according to your pre-ranked players, while the others go live. Plus after poking around sports line, its just not as simple as yahoo.

I really hope you consider changing, but im in either way.

Just had enough time to sit and play with the draft system.

Yes, we can draft live (which we'll take advantage of the ventrilio chat service as well, make a party out of it) as well as "robot" entries, which will take your top choices and assign them in order you'd like them to be drafted.

Save for the fact yahoo pretty much screwed you on player injuries. If a player went down, you couldn't reactivate him until 2 days after they returned to their teams in real life. I missed out on a few points that way (especially when Jermaine Dye got back into the lineup. Two run freakin' homer in first game back. Grrrrrrrrrrr.)

Oh, I'm also setting this up as a "Keeper" league, so that if we all have fun, we can keep it going.

Also, if someone wants to do an alternate league, I'll join that as well. Hell, I had 4 fantasy football leagues going, why not 2 baseball!?!?!

For the record,

On Yahoo, you can actually start a player despite him still being on the DL. If he plays, you get the points. I have been using Yahoo for years and they have never shorted me a point. Just because they have the DL tag does not mean you cant play them and receive credit.

Not to mention that Yahoo's systems have been completely revamped and from what I heard are awesome.

I would highly suggest Yahoo.

ESPN has a good site, but its hard to navigate to. Yahoo is very easy to get to and easy to do/learn. Plus I think ESPN is more of a salary building league rather than a straight draft.

Draft is currently set for March 8th. It will be a live draft with robot option, in case you can't make the draft.

I did add some neat "bonus point" options, (perfect game, hit for the cycle, that kind of thing) as those are VERY RARE moments in baseball, and would be neat to mark them if they happen this season.

Home team should have a few point advantage, I'll take any suggestions and we can go with what the majority of us like.

Man, I am SO stoked for baseball this season.

DELTA PI'S FANTASY BASEBALL FAQ

Draft

You draft according to position. Usually its 1 of each infield position, 3 Outfielders and a Utility guy that can be a person that plays any position except pitcher. You draft X number of Starting Pitchers, X number of Relief Pitchers, and sometimes X Pitchers which can be either SP or RP.

Bench spots are for your reserves and they can be from any position.

Now, you cant just draft three first baseman and throw them in the Outfield spots, you actually need to draft someone who plays at least 10(?) games at the designated position - dont worry, ESPN will tell you who plays which.

The draft order should be randomized, but depending on Front, it may not be. So, the order will be 12345678910 - 10987654321 etc. So if you have the last pick, you get two in a row, or the first pick of the second round.

Rosters

Once you have drafted, you will need to set your roster. Most likely you are going to have more than one player at each position, so you need to start who the best player.

Secondly, not everybody plays each day, so you will need to look at your roster to determine who is playing and when so that you dont have any blank spots on your roster. This is especially important on Monday and Thursday because only 1/2 the league plays on this day in MLB.

Thirdly, Starting Pitchers only go around 1/5 days if they are healthy. So ESPN will tell you when they start, just remember to keep them in the lineup when they do. RPs can go around every day, especially closers (the pitchers who finish games for their teams and accumulate saves) so always leave them in the lineup when their teams are playing.

Lastly, there is a waiver wire, or people that have been cut by other teams, or are undrafted. There will be some gems here, but mostly this is used to fill injury holes. You can add or drop players here, and you WILL use it, so become familiar. If you need someone, here is where to do it.

Scoring

Usually scoring has to do with stats, and here is where ill tell you what each of them are.

Hitters
Avg. - Hits per number of At Bats or Hits/ABs = Avg.
H - Hits
TB- Total Bases
HR - Homeruns or "Dingers"
BB - Walks
SO - Strikeouts
SB - Stolen Base
RBI - Run Batted In
SAC - Sacrifice, or giving up the out so that a runner can score/advance on the bases.
CYC - a hitter gets a single, double, triple and HR in one game.
GWRBI - A player that knocks home the winning run.

Pitching

IP - Innings Pitched
ERA - Earned Runs per Innings Pitched on Average (If a player pitches 9 innings and gives up 1 run - he has an ERA of 1.00, if he pitches 1 inning and gives up 1 run he has an ERA of 9.00)
H - Hits
ER - Earned Run, or if a run scores that is not the result of an Error, or if the runner was the responsibility of the Pitcher that came before you.
K - Strikeout
SO - Shutout
NH - No hitter, or no hits allowed in a 9 inning game.
PG - Perfect Game - no baserunners allowed in a 9 inning game.
W- Win (5.0 IP, leave with the lead, team wins without the other team tying the game or going ahead)
S - Save (Coming into a game, team ahead by 3 runs or less or if the tying run is in the on deck circle and completing the inning without blowing the lead)
BSV - Blown save(the result of the other team tying the game or winning)

Basically if your players do the best in those categories, your team will be best. You play against another team each week, so realize that your team may be good one week and bad another. Its a LONG season so dont loose hope.

Trades

You will need to fill holes, and during the season you can offer people your players for theirs. Dont offer me Curtis Granderson for Johan Santana, because that doesnt benefit both of us. Try to make even trades if you see you are short and they are stocked somewhere.

Overall Strategy for the Draft and Season

For the draft, use the first round to draft the cornerstone of your team. Albert Pujols, Johan Santana, or Alex Rodriguez come to mind. Do NOT draft your favorite player unless he is one of those guys.

Draft according to need and according to ranking. With the sheer number of players being drafted, you WILL not know everyone. Pay attention to the positions you need, as well as ESPN's rankings. When in doubt, draft the best person for the positions you need.

Just because they are your favorite team, does not mean they have ALL the good players. Draft Yankees, Twins and Cardinals, but also pay attention to what is available. They may not give you the best option.

Draft players from positions that arent too deep first. Draft SS, 2B, and C before drafting that other outfielder. There are a ton of outfielders available, but only a few good 2Bs.

Pay attention to the injury reports on the site. Players get hurt and take days off periodically, so watch out. Do not start your guy if he aint playing. ESPN should be pretty good at letting you know. Also if he is out for the season because of an injury - CUT HIM ASAP.

Pay attention to the teams that your guys are playing against. If your pitcher is going against the Detroit Tigers and you know they will crush him Ivan Drago style, consider another option.

Watch the waiver wire! If there is an undrafted or cut player that is tearing it up - put em on your team! Your rosters arent set, so you can add or drop players based on need.

If your guy sucks for a short period of time, dont worry. Its a 162 game season and people go slumping. So if your top guy sucks for a few games - DONT CUT HIM. If your guy hasnt been producing all season, well thats a different story.

Ask questions! I love Baseball and I love Fantasy Baseball. Im here to help.

Have fun!

DeltaPi1049
02/18/2007, 14:25
Oh and a keeper league is where you get to keep players from last years team and start there instead of from scratch. Front can elaborate there.

Frontman
02/18/2007, 20:27
Keeper league means that if we continue this league in 2008, you can flag 3 players on your roster as keepers, so that when we draft in 2008, you already have 3 players on your team.

Otherwise, Delta has covered quite a bit of ground for fantasy baseball.

I recommend also following the websites of your player's teams. For example, I will have at least one or two White Sox on my team, so I'll follow information on whitesox.com as far as those players injuries, performance, etc.

Fantasy sports is fun just to set up and go, and its fun to follow closely. Up to you how much you put into it.

With 15 people in the game, Im just a little worried that the rosters are going to get pretty thin, especially in the pitching department. Have you considered shrinking the roster size for pitchers to 2 starter 2 reliever and 1 utility pitcher? That would prevent a lot of the newer players from being at a disadvantage because they dont know who the royals' fifth starter is... Just an idea.

After a very quick scan of the settings, one suggestion I would have is to allow a few more teams into the playoffs. Baseball is a long season and with 16 teams in the league, I'd say at least 8 should make the playoffs.
I know in that Yahoo league last year, I started off slow, had some injuries and just missed out on the playoffs, although I thought I had one of the better teams. At the end of each week, once the playoffs started, I checked my stats up against the other winners throughout the playoffs, and would've won the whole championship had I got in. Kinda sucked, but it was neat to know my end of the season work wasn't for nothing.:ermm:

Well, one player hasn't accepted his invite yet. If he doesn't accept by Wednesday night or PMs me that he's dropping out, you can take his place. Sound fair?

Either way, you can view the league at:

http://games.espn.go.com/flb/leagueoffice?leagueId=10997

And follow along for the fun, as well as the current players have the option of taking on a second owner. I'll leave that up to the already active players.

Ok,

Last team just registered, we are offically a go for a March 8th, 8pm CST live draft. If by chance this is a bad day, say something now, and I can move the draft to another day and time. (That's a Thursday.)

I've posted a message at the league's site about nominating trophy candidates once the league gets underway, as obviously I can't see every play/every game all week long.

Would you guys prefer to have the week's go Sunday through Saturday, or Monday through Sunday?

Have fun!

Newbs can take a look here.

My suggestion for right this moment: Go look over ESPN's list of the pre-draft rankings. Start thinking of the plan you have for your team. You have 90 seconds a pick, so be ready.

I will be on AIM under the same screen name if anyone has problems, needs opinions, etc.

Now, Ive smashed the plasmas, shot millen, and just given up. Thanks.

hey front, we were having a discussion early on about being able to play other positions at DH apparently that isn't the case

so i was wondering if you could change the DH spot to a second util position? that shouldn't hurt the people who drafted a DH on their merits, but for those of us that drafted on the misinformation it won't force us to be down a player every week

Okies,

Just looked into it. To do so would make me reset the draft.

HOWEVER, here's an option we do have, I can manually re-enter the rosters for each team. It would take the better part of an afternoon, so I'd need a bit of help.

So, if you all could, copy down your roster and send it to me via email (frontmansfp@yahoo.com) I can get to work on that.

Ok, the first one was an ESPN snafu, but this one? You'd figure you could DH any position, as that's what they do in baseball in reality, you know?

Grrrr.

So simply put, I'll keep the rosters intact, I just need you all to email your rosters to me (and no shenanigans! I'll double check them prior to resetting! lol :)

Glad I had the draft prior to opening day, as we can shake out the kinks.

Not wanting to be rude here, but all the rules and explaination of what the DH spot is (not to mention that if you know what the Utility slot is, then you would know you couldn't play anyone at DH) are there on the site and the settings of the league have been up for a about a month now. Things like that should've been brought up way before the draft. It's not fair to those that actually passed up on a possibly better pick to take a DH player instead.

yes normally i would agree with you

except that an hour before the first set time for the draft while we were all in the draft chat, a number of us asked that specific question, and the answer was that anyone could play DH, but a DH could only be assigned to the DH spot

if the answer has been otherwise we would have drafted differently.

i however don't want front to have to hand enter the rosters, and i assume that complicates how we change when people are playing and what position people are playing in, so i think we should come to a consensus before we force that kind of work on him

armac
03/09/2007, 09:34

DeltaPi1049
03/09/2007, 10:22
Here is a much easier way to do things:

No one is allowed to play anyone in the DH spot. Just leave it empty the whole season.

If you drafted a DH like me, you will need to fill the util spot. That way everyone is happy.

armac
03/09/2007, 12:08
I don't like that, and I didn't draft a DH.

I think that people who drafted DHs are being penalized with their util spot at that point.

I also think that more DHs will appear as the season progresses and more people qualify for the position. (Provided espn changes positions on the site as new people qualify.)

I vote we leave it, and trust me this doesn't help me my DH is awful. As lame as the position is it is a position, it would be like saying that we should have two first basemen because this years third basemen aren't very good.

Also resetting everything looks like a recipe for disaster.

I took a look at peoples' rosters:

the Hippos, Arkham Inmates, Voltron Force, Team SDMF, and Chicago Hitmen all have active DHs in their lineup.

Dave Marshack Ski Experience has Jason Botts, who is on Texas, but I have no idea if he has a chance to be their DH or not.

Phitin Entropy has Dmitri Young, who is an unsigned free agent.

The Fables have Carl Everett, who is an unsigned free agent.

Biz's Team has nobody in their DH slot, but Jason Giambi is listed as also playing DH, and can be moved there if he finds someone else to play 1B.

I Heart Tim Gunn has two players that also list DH on them on his roster: Vlady Guerrero, and Garrett Anderson.

Gotham Goshawks have Shea Hillenbrand, who also has a DH listing.

Five teams (Star City Arrows, Doc's Minions, Altamont Losers, Iwin, and my team) have no DH on their roster. However, there are some free agents still out there that have DH listed as one of their positions, and people can try to claim.

I have already placed one of my players on the DL, and have put a claim in on one of the DHs that are available. The advantage to having the #16 pick in the draft is that I am #1 on the waiver wire. (I will get my player that I claimed.)

I would suggest teams that don't have a DH looks to see what players are available with a DH listing.

LMK gang. IT sounds like this is something we can fix.

Another option is that I have the ability to assign players to teams as league manager. If someone can account for all DHs currently not on rosters, I can assign them randomly to teams that need one and we then have fixed it pretty quickly.

I can now see why folks don't enjoy running leagues. I just hope we can fix all of this within the next 24 days.

Ok, I have to brag about my younger brother.

Mike, my brother, works for a cabinetry company as a carpenter (say that 5 times fast) here in Chicago. In the winter of 2005/06, he got a job that we were very proud of him to work on.

He helped install the counters and cabinets in the luxury box suites for Jerry Reinsdorf, Kenny Williams, and Ozzie Guillen. For those who are unfamiliar with those names, this logo should say it all:

583

So, come the 2006 (The Sox championship season) the Sox organization was so impressed with Mike and his team's work, that they redid ALL of the luxury suites, as well the press boxes.

At www.flyingsock.com, I was able to post up many photos of Mike's work at the park, as well as the seats that they have installed at the park (the original Comiskey had green seats for like forever. Then, they decided to update the seats to blue when the new park opened. Well, the Sox listened to fans, who remembered how cool the green looked at the old park, and have changed all but two seats to green ones. The two that remain are where two home runs landed. Paul Konerko's Grand Slam to put the Sox in the lead in game two of the series, and Scott Podsednik's walk off homer to win the same game.

So, here's the link to the thread where I get to brag about my bro and his work:

http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=78034&page=13

Pan down until you see the photo with the caption:
"Future Manager of the White Sox, circa 2045" which would be Front-kid, aka my son Tony. From there, follow the thread as I posted the photos.

I'm pretty proud of the hard work he did to make US Cellular Field look the best it could.

Man, what a start for Conteras. Five earned runs on six hits... in the first inning. Only one inning of work, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits and a walk.

My word, I can hear Frontman's head exploding from here...

Ah poop, its only one game.

With any errors like that, I have the option of "fixing" overlooks like that.

However, I believe something is happening with the program overall, and everything is locked currently. Let's see if it shakes out, as CC (as well as you) deserve the credit with the win, because GOOD GAWD did the Sox blow today.

i definitely think there is something up with the program

all the players are unlocked today, but wierdly when i look at the scoreboard, my score is half of what it should be, but if i look at even the quick boxscore it is right

nothing like opening day with some bugs, at least they have it all right somewhere in there, it is kind of funny though

everyone should keep their eye on their scores for a couple of days while they work out the kinks
