Good day to all,

Well it has been an entire year since the magazine was started as a project out of boredom. Hard to believe I know. Still, 12 issues later we have gone from myself writing the articles to having over 30 different writers on staff that can write at any time. The magazine that was once a Heroclix only magazine has become a diversified miniatures and gaming magazine that could definitely compete with the bigger names in terms of content. With a new year upon us and Heroclix in its 5th year we are bound only for more excitement than ever before.

Well we have even more great news for all my fans. In March I will be flying out to Seattle to sit down with Wizkids and get some EXCLUSIVE information that will only be found in this online magazine and the other big magazines. The issue will be sent out on March 20th, the same day that all the other big companies will be receiving and releasing their info. We at Critical Hit are excited and thrilled to be part of the big year that Wizkids has for us.

On top of all that you will find that I am including the inserts as LINKS this time around so that I do not take up your emails with the size of the documents. I hope you enjoy them all.

Thank you my loyal readers and I hope this new year finds you all healthy and happy,

GOOD DAY AND GOOD GAMING

WILLIAM ROCK

Hey folks, this is The' Le. I did all the imaging and layout for the magazine.

Each and every participant did a great job on Rock's magazine, and it's great to see it hit 12 issues.

Stay tuned, because we are just getting started!

Thanks. I am particularly proud of the front cover. I got away from the "comic book cover" look and went for a more magazine look. The "Aliens" font with a blue shadow makes it look really sharp.

Sadly Jenna will no longer be writing articles for us. She has gotten a position with WOTC and will no longer be writing for us due to job restriction.

OH, I SEE HOW IT IS!!! TOO GOOD FOR US NOW! OOOOOO WIZARD OF THE COAST! LOOK AT ME, I'M JENNA AND I'M IMPORTANT!

Just kidding. Congratulations on the job Jenna and good luck! Jonna and myself will both miss your articles. She related to them SO MUCH as she is preparing to be a "Gamer's Wife" herself.

Thank you for the kind words! It was my first attempt at something like that.
My Cheatsheet for "The Lab" is complete and it looks a little better.
Rock810 willing, it may be in the next issue.

I enjoyed this issue. There is some good stuff.

I liked the look at Spiderman Allies and Brilliant Tactician. It is always a card I want to use but never seem to quite manage to. Must try some more 400 point FF teams.

LOL. Actually, I misspoke. I don't do *all* the imaging. The writers and Rock put in some recommended images.

I, in turn, take the good ones and turn them into banners, and re-image them for layout. I end up only keeping about 20% of the images they give me - the other 80% either don't work right, or are usually the wrong size/resolution/type and get tossed.

The Cudgies image is one I did not toss and just converted it to a banner. Honestly I have no idea what that thing is -- I thought it was a tribble.

Yeah, I usually send Thele a HUGE 20 MG document that I have to mail in two parts. I generally overload on images after doing much of the editing and placement process. A huge thanks to thele for all the work he does.

I know it takes a long time to research, but will there be another price guide in the future?:nervous:

rock810
02/20/2007, 14:17
Unless I get a job that does not require so much work there most probably will not be a price guide for some time as it is literally 30 hours of work on my part. I have tried to teach it to some people, but it is not an easy thing to do. Hopefully, in a year or two as I start working on other projects I MAY have more time, but no guarantees.

I just noticed that the Lab Checklist is version "1.0" w/o the LE information. I unfortunately forgot to rename the updated file before sending it to Rock810 last week. If anyone really wants it I will resend it to Rock810 or barring his busy schedule you can PM me for it (175 kb PDF file). Include your e-mail address if you want the updated version.

My Apologies.

I'll tell you, but you have to promise not to hold it against me!

I use Microsoft WORD for all the layout. It is an extremely versatile program that allows me to get things done very quickly and efficiently, with spectacular results. I can certainly get even better results with Indesign or Quark, but that would take far too much time. Not to mention MS Word is very inexpensive.

For imaging, I use Ulead PhotoImpact 10. (I use PhotoImpact for everything, including the custom horrorclix victims you all received with issue 11). Not to mention PhotoImpact is very inexpensive.

Wow, great looking issue.

Thanks to The Le for making my 2099 Review and Cheese Article look aweseome (again).

I'm glad there are some SWM writers, it's a game I play in passing and I'm thankful that people that know what they are doing are writing a SWM article instead of me lol.

Great job guys!;)

Ok, let me say this first, ..a very entertaining, useful, well prepared online-magazine-post, but a big no-no is the part on the StarWars miniatures, ..your taking away from the players sole focus on Wizkids and its products. I mean dont' get me wrong, the StarWars card game post is fine, because itsa Wizkids product, but to review a non-Wizkids product, is not right. Im' not sayn anyone who plays heroclix cant' play any other games, but a message board dedicated to Heroclix is not the place to post reviews on competitive products and should be omited in the future.

Thank you for your opinion, but it is not going to happen. Critical hit is posted on 5 different boards and we are expanding our readership. Truth be told if you check another realms you will find a few different reviews on these games out there. The goal is not to be a Heroclix ONLY gaming magazine, but a PRIMARILY HEROCLIX gaming with other miniatures. We always appreciate the feedback though.

I respect your opinions, but your criticism is a month late. This is the second month that 'CritHit' has included material on other games like Star Wars (last month we had a well written article on Dream Blade for example). None of the inclusion of other materials takes away from the core principal of teh Mag, to be Dedicated to HeroClix.

My advice is to enjoy the stuff you do like and just turn/scroll past the stuff that doesn't interest you. But thanks for sharing your opinions on the Mag.

Well thanks for your response. Im just sayn with any fanzine that starts off focusing on one game Heroclix/Horrorclix, ( ..hence the name 'CriticalHit' ) & then expands onto other games or subjects .. loses the interest of the original readers. I recall back in the '90s' a fanzine called Protoculture Addicts that focused onth' anime series Robotech/Macross. Eventually they expanded to reviewing other animes' & readers lost interest, not all, but enough. So feel free to expand your magazine to include other games, Im' sure some will enjoy, but like me & many others who Ive talked to, we do just like you commented above, ..we gscroll past the non-wizkids items. Keep it up its still a good magazine-post but I guess if it ever slowly starts to have less Heroclix items then others, myself or others can always start up another web-magazine to post here.

There are critical hits in Star Wars, in fact other than the Clix games I can't name one in that magazine with Crit hits lol.

I understand your hesitation about non-WK games, but since copyrights and legal stuff isn't involved in this Magazine (for right now) people can write whatever the heck they want.

In some ways this is kind of insulting towards me as I don't think anyone realizes the time or effort I and the writers put into the magazine. If you want to start your own web-magazine I implore you to do so. Then people would realize the difficulty of doing the editing and formating that happens with the magazine.

Granted we won't get away from heroclix or horrorclix primarily because they are the games I play. Still I am not short sited enough not to realize there are other miniatures games out there. What you will find is we are becoming a MINIATURES magazine (with Heroclix focus)

Though again I implore please walk in my shoes for a month. Ask thele, this job is not an easy one and takes more time and effort than anyone could believe.

Seriously. I did three issues of my "Planetary Bugler" clix zine all by my lonesome and it was hard work! I kinda overloaded myself (and the graphics) by including custom dials and dialtops...but its neat to look back and see my Krypto dial, and my takes on 'improved' X-men for X-factor.

(If there is any interest in archiving these old tomes, let me know...I originally distributed them through CreationMatrix, but I think they went defunct 3 years ago!)
