View Full Version : HCRealms Mafia Game Thread
Okay, here's a quick recap on how we're going to be playing this for those who haven't read up on it at mafiascum.net or elsewhere.
Each of you have been (or will be, shortly) PMed a role you have been assigned. This PM will include your character, alignment, and any special abilities you might have. You may not copy-and-paste anything from this message. I occasionally have a distinctive writing style, and it could be a giveaway as to if someone is telling the truth or not... a healthy dose of paranoia is what we're going for. There is no need to act 'in character'... if you start saying 'bub' and 'snikt' a lot, people will figure out who you are. You're trying to hide your identity so that whoever is killing people doesn't decide to go for you next.
The game will begin with a story post by me, detailing why everyone is here and the first death. After that, you will have 48 hours to vote on who you want to lynch. Votes are cast by typing VOTE: NAME or CHANGE VOTE: NAME in this thread. You may also vote for 'Nobody'. If a majority vote is not achieved by the end of 48 hours, nobody will be lynched. Either way, you get another story post and we enter the Night Phase. The Night Phase will last for 24 hours. Anyone with a Night Ability must PM me their target by the end of the phase (or PM me 'nope, not using it tonight' if you are allowed to). At the end of the phase, you get another story post learning who died... erm, I mean, what happened during the night. And we repeat until one of two things happens: Only Mafia are left standing, or only Townies are left standing.
In this game, the Mafia are represented by, naturally, super-villains. The Townies are represented by super-heroes. Expect anything... past games I've been part of have involved cults, serial killers, multiple mafia families, suicide pacts, powers that change every few days, all kinds of oddness. We won't have a lot of that... but there will be some.
Remember: Unless your Role allows you to, you may only discuss this game in this thread. Anyone caught communicating about this game outside this thread, without a Role that allows them to, will be auto-killed.
I hope everyone enjoyes themselves. The game will begin shortly.
In the aftermath of World War Hulk, Tony Stark realized that something had to be done to heal the torn soul of the nation's heroes. At great personal risk, he sent image inducers to a select group of people, inviting them to a conference. Using state-of-the-art technology, all powers, devices, and magic would be shut down during the conference... and hopefully, they could find a way to fix what had been put wrong.
But fate had other plans. The Kingpin acquired several of these image inducers and messages, and decided that the time was right for him to step in and sow chaos, the sort only he could find a way to profit from. Tony Stark must have known one of his messages could fall into the wrong hands, he must have had safeguards... but it was no use.
As Tony Stark stood at the head of the conference table, he realized that he alone know who had been invited. Old friends he had fought against, new allies, all needing guidance... and he needing theirs. "Until we come to some sort of peaceful solution... everyone's image inducer is locked in an 'on' position. I know who I invited, but none of us know which of you are which... so you can all speak freely." Today was the first chance in a long time to forge a lasting peace.
That thought turned to horror as he took his seat, feeling a mechanical click under his chair. "Someone in this room just killed me," he uttered... and then the explosive hidden in his seat went off.
Amazingly, everyone else was unharmed... but they slowly realized, there was still a killer among them. Their powers were dampened, they had no bags of tricks, the only option left to them was to find the cancer among them... and destroy it. If they left before that was done... who knows what could happen next?
Peers is dead. He was Tony Stark, Hero-Aligned Director of SHIELD and Well-Intentioned Despot.

The first Day Phase will end in 48 hours. With 15 players, 8 votes are required to lynch somebody.
PMs have all been sent. For those who haven't played before, the first day usually consists of one big debate: Do you want to lynch someone, hoping you hit someone important at the risk of hitting someone innocent... or do you just sit and do nothing, and wait for someone else to be killed during the night phase?
DocDoom187
07/17/2007, 17:52
I say we should all wait and see if the murderer strikes again. For now, it would be a shot in the dark..... or more like an explosion ;). If we wait and maybe see a pattern in who the murderer targets, we may be able to deduct who the murder is.

I nominate DocDoom187 for lynchee!

That sounds like murder logic!
I nominate DocDoom187 for lynchee!
But isn't that just what the murderer would want? Why murder someone, when you can get someone else to do your dirty work. Maybe Dumas is the murderer. I do not nominate him to get lynched YET. I need some more evidence.
St-Dumas
07/17/2007, 18:26
Fine. I withdraw my nomination until I see more evidence.
Current voting:
No Lynch -- 2 (DocDoom178, St-Dumas)

I agree with DDoom. (Wouldn't it be funny if he was Dr. Doom? :p)
We (or at least I) don't know anybody here from anyone else. Shooting blindly is just as likely to kill an important asset as it is to get rid of a threat.
Vote: Nobody

I have to go with my compatriots on this one. We don't want to kill off a potentially valuable resource this early in the game.

Current voting:
No Lynch -- 5 (DocDoom178, St-Dumas, JAckofhearts, Jackassterson, Iron Ham)
The first Day Phase will end in roughly 44 hours 0 minutes. With 15 players, 8 votes are required for a successful vote.
Oh, and since I forgot to say it in the first post: Do not edit any posts to this thread. It gives an unfair advanatage to thsoe who can be on constantly, reading posts before they change. And if a vote is successful, the phase does end early so you don't have to wait around longer.
Since voting for no one the first time around seems to be the consensus, I'll toss my vote that direction as well.
lensnart
07/18/2007, 01:12
I see no reason to rock the boat here, I will wait and see what happens before going after anyone just yet. So Nobody as well.
That's seven... I'm off for the night. One more vote for 'nobody' and the day phase will end, and we'll skip to the night phase, where somebody will die...

No Lynch -- 8 (DocDoom178, St-Dumas, JAckofhearts, Jackassterson, Iron Ham, JacinB, lensnart, KitsuShel)
-----------------------------------
With a majority vote, the assembled mystery men decided that nobody would die today. Sleeping quarters had been made up for everyone in this underground bunker... and surely, the nefarious minds present would do something to give themselves away during the night. Of course, that would most likely involve finding a corpse in the morning...
-----------------------------
We are now in the night phase of Day 1. Those of you with Night Abilities need to PM me your target (or 'no target' if you are allowed) in the next 24 hours. If I receive PMs from all the people with abilities before then, the night phase will end early and we'll move on to Day 2.
This is a question, mostly for Peers, but something I thought I would let others consider as well before we all bed-down for the night:
Are there any dual-affiliation characters in this game? Are there people who are playing both sides? Or, is it a straight-forward 'if you're good you're good, and if you're bad you're bad' thing ... ?
Doombot 3.1
07/18/2007, 13:02
No on lynching.
Edit: Never mind. I posted before I saw we had an anti-lynching majority. I guess I should read the entire page before posting next time. ;)
You can only have one affiliation at a time. Some games include people who are playing both sides, but they still only have one affiliation.
So, in other words (and without being too specific), there aren't any Sharon Carter-type situations where we could have characters that are working both with Captain America on Cap's team and against him as, possibly, Red Skull's secret assassin ... ?
No. The closest thing to what you're describing is a role called the Mafia Traitor; they know who the members of the Mafia are, and the other members of the Mafia think that the Traitor is Mafia... but the Traitor is actually Town-aligned and wins when the Mafia is wiped out.
There is nobody who has "You win when the Heroes are wiped out OR when the Villains are wiped out" as a win condition. Everyone is on a specific side.

Just so I'm clear, since I've never played this before, we cannot speak in character on this thread during "nighttime," correct? So Jack, can't answer my question until the morning since he's "sleeping" on it?
You can talk... just not about the game. Any information gained or decisions made have a good chance of being made useless anyway when someone dies.

Yeah, he got assigned the little-known hero of "'Possum Man". The only times he seems to show up are during the big crossover events but being Gambit's there, it automatically puts ol' 'Possum into "death" mode for fear of being stuck in a gumbo. :cheeky:

Well, according to my watch, it is now 10:20am CDT, which means that it's morning.
So, after the end of the first night phase, JackAssterson is still talking. This can only mean that the devious plans of the evil men among us have failed. Or, it could mean that Jack is evil, and we need to kill him today before he kills again.
Or, it could mean that it's all just a game and no one actually gets to kill Jack.

The funny part is, no one's dead yet!
Except IronPeersman.
The first night was filled with a sort of grim determination... either to find the killer among them, or just to try and not get caught up in the ensuing madness.
*********************
The sensational Spider-Woman had a gut feeling about one of the people here and planned on seeing what she could do to mess up his plans for the night. She tinkered with her image inducer to select something a little more 'supermodel' than she had been wearing and knocked on her target's door. It slid open to reveal that... well, her target for the night was already otherwise occupied.
"Two ladies?" he asked, "I know we're mourning a death and all, but this is turning into one of the greatest nights of my life!"
Spider-Woman shook her head and simply walked away... while the other woman, disgusted, slapped the man across the face and left.
"Ladies, wait! Come back! I... hey, why is my door locked? Let me out!"
*********************
Even with the power dampeners rendering everyone pretty much human, one man still had an edge with years of tracking experience. Following his selected quarry, he kept careful note of what they did in the corridors at night, and who they met up with. Tonight, it felt like things couldn't possibly go wrong... like some sort of guardian angel was following him, keeping him safe... not that he believed in that sort of thing.
*********************
"I know who you are," said the man at the door, "And I can help you."
"Why should I believe that?" asked Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier.
"Because I have a way for us to get out of here. But we'll need to work together."
"... Right. Come on in... but if you think I won't be watching you, you're mistaken."
The figure walked inside, and the door slid shut... followed by sounds of a scuffle, and ending with the dull thud of head hitting floor.
*********************
But the most vile heart tonight crept along the corridors... he had it all here, really. Nobody knew he was the short, skinny, worthless joke here... they had no idea who he was. But tonight... tonight, he made his employer very, very happy. There was a plan in place, yes, a great plan, and he... he would be the one to carry out the dirty deed, to kill one of these heroes that had tormented them for so long. Armed with a silenced pistol carefully snuck past the bases' security measures, he waited for the door to the room to open, and send three rounds into the lump lying on the bed... then drew back the covers to find only pillows.
"This... this wasn't in the plan... how would he know I was coming... unless he's... oh no, not here... not him..." The villain, pathetic once again, left the room and fled.
*********************
The next morning, the bases automated systems brewed coffee and made pancakes for everyone as they gathered in the conference room... and to everyone's surprise... Everyone was still there.
This was possibly the most complicated first night I've ever seen... I can't wait to reveal it all once the game is over. PMs will be going out shortly with any additional details you may get from last night. The day phase will end in 24 hours. With 15 players still in the game, 8 votes are needed for a majority decision.
Ah, hah! So you admit to being a villain who rules with an iron fist, Jack. Or should I call you Victor!?!
If anyone here shouts 'Curse you, Richards!', they're going to the top of my 'suspicious' list.

So, lemme see ...
Some guy went to do the hibidy-dibidy with some other chick. Wolverine was his wing-man. Spider-Woman, though, thought he was suspicious looking, so she followed him and spoiled his night. Only, she didn't spoil his night because some skinny guy was going to kill him and he didn't get back to his room in time to get dead ... ?

Jackofhearts2005
07/19/2007, 12:50
Close. I'm thinking the guy who wasn't in his room and narrowly escaped death wasn't the guy Spider-Woman walked in on.
She wanted to spoil "his" plans so she knocked on "the target's" door and ended up ruining his evening.
Then he got locked into his own room, meaning he can't be the person who almost got killed.

I'm sure there's more than one villain.
We also know at least two of the hero's identities, Not that that helps much but every little bit does.
I'm more interested in figuring out what roles could allow so many people to be up and about during the night.
We know killer and/or possibly serial killer. Probably Cop (Spider-Woman?) and/or Vigilante(Tracker?). If real, Guardian Angel I'm guessing is one other. Leaving the girl in the other man's room and the man that fought with Winter Soldier.

Except we all have image inducers, we can appear as whatever. Spider-Woman actually was able to tinker with hers to appear slightly different (Supermodel-ish).
We also know that the Mafia definitely targeted somebody. This didn't seem like a serial killer, this guy said he had a boss.
It could also be that the people in the room together were actually there together on purpose and neither were out of their room. Like, perhaps, if the two were Mr. Fantastic and Sue Storm. Or, Ororo and Black Panther. Or, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Or, Spider-Man and Mary Jane.

It does seem like there was an awful lot of 'do-gooding' going on last night.
As to the Winter Soldier bit, it could well be that Winter Soldier and whomever he fought with could've managed to coincidentally target each other -- one with an ability that allows him to thwart an attack, and the other with an attack.
That doesn't really tell us who was on what side, but since Winter Soldier isn't dead and I would presume he's a good guy (possibly a 'Vigilante' role), I would presume that the other person is probably evil.

The 'gigalo' was locked in his room all night (IE, roleblocked).
And, if we are able to determine that someone else is of similar affiliation but not on our individual 'team', can we PM them? Or, are we only ever to talk to the people on our teams ... ?
Not everyone is on a 'team'. Only people on a 'team' are allowed to communicate via PM. As for the 'of similar affiliation' bit... if you are on a team, that team -is- your Affiliation. If the cop investigates a normal hero, he gets Hero. If he investigates, say, someone on the Guardians of the Galaxy, he gets 'Guardian of the Galaxy'.
It does if Peers has been playing to the individual player's strengths/weaknesses...
All roles were assigned randomly, specificly, by putting them all on a spreadsheet, assigning them each a random number, sorting by the random number, and assigning them in the order of the start-up list.

Nobody can communicate with -anyone- via PM unless their role specifically says they can.

his power was stopped. roleblocked, his role in the game was temporarily blocked.
This is starting to get complicated.
So what do we know.
Spider woman visited a person's room because she had a hunch about him.
This person, male, had a visitor, a woman. Spider-Woman ruined his night.
Somewhere else a person was roaming the halls, he was described as having amazing tracking skills. And felt nothing bad was going to happen this night. He was shadowed by a Guardian angel (either a Doctor or Bodyguard of some type. These are the only roles in the wiki that support this type of action.)
A man goes to visit Winter Soldier, stating he knows who he is. WS lets him in and they get in to a fight but no one is killed. (This is the most puzzling one to me. Though if there is a Role blocker it might be a bit clearer.)
A Mafia man goes to perform a hit on someone only to find that the target is not in his room.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is there are a ton of roles that can be used here to fill in these blanks. Not sure there's really enough info to go on just yet.
Jackofhearts2005

Who's the gigalo and what does roleblocked mean?
"The role blocker chooses one player per night to block from performing his or her Night Choice. The target's night choice will not be performed, and the target may or may not be informed he was blocked, depending on the game mechanics. What happens when a member of the Mafia is blocked varies from mod to mod - sometimes Mafia families must choose a person to send to kill, and the kill is only prevented if that person is blocked.
The role blocker can exist with either a pro-town or pro-mafia alignment."

Your vote has reasoning that I disagree with.
Maybe sstralkowski knows something about Dumas. Maybe he doesn't.
However, someone knows something, and if we string up anyone who tries to lynch someone, we're gonna end up stringing up the cop.

Honestly, I'm not voting 'against' you so much as I don't have a reason not to vote for you.
In that regard, I suppose, you aren't really all that different from anyone else as anyone could be the killer.
The only reason that you're currently getting my vote is because I have to vote for someone and, well, Jackofhearts2005 made me feel bad about voting for him. It's not like I've got a gut feeling about anyone ... yet.
Except Rokk. He's got Doctor Doom written all over him ... in crayon, so it'll probably wash off.

Considering what Jack had shared about his family's history in the sign-up thread, I'd doubt Peers would be so crass as to place Jack in the mob (but, then, maybe I'm just sensitive about such things and stereotypes).
