View Full Version : HCRealms Fantasy Football League - 2007-2008 !!!
Are you ready for some football?
Well, quite frankly, I am. And, with training camps starting up and the season officially kicking off in less than two months, it is time once again to begin signing up for the HCRealms Fantasy Football League.
Now, as some of you know, last season we had two leagues because ... well, Stepper79 and I both started one without realizing the other had done so. This year, we're merging. So, you'll get all of the fun of Stepper's league with all of it's fancy, funny weekly trophys and all of the ... well, whatever it was, that my league had.
The full scoring rules will be posted soon. We will be playing through FoxSports.com. And, here's a quick preview of what you can look forward to this season:
1) Flexibility.
We're adding a 'Flex Spot' to the roster this year, allowing you to field an additional RB or WR each week to help your team out.
2) 'Big Plays.'
Your Running Back just broke off an 70+ yard run? You get bonus points. Your Wide Reciever just pulled down a 70+ yard bomb? You get bonus points.
3) Actually being able to pick up decent players.
Get shafted by the Live Draft last year and get stuck without a decent QB, or WR, or RB all season? We've got a fix for that this season. Here's how it'll work ...
If we've only got 12 players, we'll all play as one big league. That'll still leave enough starting RBs to fill every teams' needs and then some. There'll be enough starting QBs to fill two slots on every team and more. There might even be a few starting WRs that won't even get drafted because, well, we won't need all of them.
But, I think we'll have more than 12 players ... especially since we've already had more than that many express interest. In fact, I think we'll have more than 20 players, which means that not everyone would get two starting RBs, right? Wrong.
When we hit a certain point, we're going to split the league into two seperate 'divisions' with two seperate draft pools. In game terms, this means that we'll have two seperate leagues, playing in the same online system so that we have consistent scoring and such throughout.
If we hit that point, you'll be assigned to a league at random, but the leagues will be divided evenly so that we've got the same number of players in each.
But, you're wondering about how we're going to draft, right? How we can guarantee that you're not going to be shafted by a live draft, or by a pre-generated list of players that may or may not wind up getting you the players to fill your slots?
Here's the answer: We're drafting right here, on HCRealms.
We'll start on a certain day (like, say, perhaps, next Tuesday). Everyone will have the opportunity to see who was taken by whom. We'll draft via PM, and if the guy you want gets taken ahead of you, you'll get a PM back letting you know so that you can re-draft.
Now, keep in mind, we are up against a deadline. The season does start here pretty soon, so everyone is going to have to get their draft choices in on a daily basis so that we can keep things moving. If you can't be on more than once a day, you're going to still have to send a list of potential picks just in case someone drafting ahead of you takes someone you wanted.
(Yeah, it may not completely solve the problems we had last year, but it'll go a long way toward making sure that someone doesn't, say, wind up drafting the whole Chiefs roster or get four kickers and no Defense / Special Teams).
Sound cool so far?
Good.
Now, here's the list of people who'd expressed that they're interested in playing again in the thread from last season.

If your name's not already on the list and you want it to be, let me know. If your name is on the list and you want out, also let me know.
The deadline for saying that you want to play is: Midnight CDT on Thursday, July 26th.
Instructions for getting your division spot and draft place will be PM'd shortly. Drafting will officially begin at the end of next week, as soon as we get everyone sorted into whichever 'division' they wind up in.
Edit (7-23-2007): The names that I have recieved so far have been added. If your name is in bold, that means that I have gotten your draft roll successfully. If your name isn't in bold, be sure to get your roll to me ASAP. The draft rolls have all been entered into a spreadsheet for easy sorting and tabulation ... though, it's already become apparent that we're going to need a couple of people to roll another tie-breaker (or two).

Wait, so with the special draft if there are too many people, will there be like 2 LT's drafted? One for each league?
I'm kind of Confused.

Right.
Two LT's. Two LJ's. Two Peyton's. Two TO's.
If you've got more than 16 players, someone is going to wind up out of luck as they won't be able to get the two starting RBs they'd need to field each week, and they'd just have to hope that whatever back-up they got would see some playing time.
This way, we don't have to worry that the talent pool that we've got to choose from is entirely diminished after the first couple of rounds simply because we're running a massive league.
You'll play against your 'division' opponents throughout the season and the play-offs (as, unfortunately, there's not yet a league vs. league option ...), and then -- though this isn't in stone yet -- the over-all league champion will be whichever division champ has managed to score the most points throughout the year.

If it turns out there are two leauges, yes there will probably be two LT's overall, but they will never play eachother(Unless there is some kind of playoff thingy) in the regular season.
Alright ... I just got an 'un-signed' draft roll. If you've sent in your draft roll and your e-mail address is from gmail.com and begins with eck, you'll need to re-roll. And, include your HCRealms username this time. :p

I like this idea, though I still am a little confused if we are going to be running this through a service for purposes of stat keeping, point tallys etc.

Other than seeing Adrian Peterson use the NFC North division as a welcome mat, I dont really see very much exciting stuff this year. Last year had all the huge rookies, best draft class in years, this year its kinda just mehhhhhhh, too much off the field #### is preventing a focus on the real stories. Like how the **** the patriots ended up with Randy Moss and a VASTLY improved defense. Who let that happen? Seriously!

I don't know how many have signed up so far, but if this is going to be a draft where each person PMs in their picks, we may want to get this going as soon as possible. I only say this, because I did an 8 person NBA draft a couple years ago that took 2 1/2 weeks to complete doing it this way. In football, not only are we probably going to have more than 8 players, but there is usually more rounds to draft as well.
Just a little info from a firsthand experience on doing a draft this way that may help ya out. Thanks for the invite and setting this league up. It looks like it will be fun again!:)

Yeah, im not sure what is going on here. Are we doing a draft via PM and then posting the picks on yahoo or ESPN or something like that for the scoring? I dont want manual scoring for the main reason that there are free services out there that can offer you exactly what you need here. But...if someone wants to do it, Im okay with letting them handle it.

That is what I was hoping... :)
Yep, that is basically what'll happen. We'll do the draft here, I'll enter the results, and then FoxSports will take it from there.
We're at an even number right now. If we have an odd number, Shel's boyfriend would like 'in'.
As of right now, with -- of the people who've signed up thus far -- two draft rolls still to come in, here's what the order might look like.*
Division 1
1) DocDoom187
2) KitsuShel
3) Gacy's Clown
4) JacinB
5) Charaxes
6) absolutvt69
7) technohead
8) NAES72
9) lensnart
10) mike_houghton
Division 2
1) Stepper79
2) biz567
3) Iceman425
4) DeltaPi1049
5) Dark Flash2099
6) T.A.D.
7) armac
8) pbdeberry
9) Antipathy
10) Frontman
* - Keep in mind, I said 'might'. Divisions are not yet locked in stone (I purposefully built them so they could be evenly divided a number of ways), and that could affect the overall order. Things could be affected further when we get the other draft rolls and any latecomers sign up ... and, of course, we have to have even numbers within each division. But, I just wanted to give you a bit of a preview as to where you might fall, so you can start planning your draft.
Also, I had discussed with Stepper doing the draft in a 'snake draft' progression ... meaning that if you draft first in the first round, you draft last in the second round. And, last in the first round would draft first in the second round. That's as close to 'even' as I can make it, so that everyone starts out on a level playing field.

so who got higher then a nine?
All draft rolls are in.
I come up with about 5 different ways I could currently split the divisions to have even teams on each side -- would've been six, but Stepper and I will have to be in seperate divisions to 'manage' each side.
After randomly determining which way to split the divisions based upon the current people we have playing and the rolls they've submitted, and sending the resulting rolls to Stepper, KitsuShel, and Frontman for independent verification, I have posted the resulting draft order in the placeholder above.
Unless we see an influx of players deciding they want to play in the next week (it would take 2 to alter one division, 4 to alter both), this should be pretty much the order of the draft.
So, start scouring the news wires and reading the expert opinions. Find your sleepers and your 'must haves'. We'll plan to start drafting a week from tomorrow.

Do we select whole defenses... or individual players?

Unfortunately, though it would make things more like the regular NFL, we don't have the ability to allow you to trade draft spots.
And, in this league, you draft Defenses and Special Teams as a whole unit. So, for example, if you take the Bears Defense, you also play the Bears Special Teams.

What about just trading picks, not entire spots? Like, say, I would trade my 2nd and 6th picks for someone's 3rd and 5th. Would that be possible?

Ok, so who's going to be nice and act as my adviser for my picks?
At this point, I'd consider adding a second running back.
(If I'm not mistaken, we did have two in our games last season.)
However, since you already can opt to add either another RB or a third WR in your flex spot, it might take a little more to convince me of the need for it.
mike_houghton
07/25/2007, 14:31
I will voice my opinion...
How often do u see 3 running backs in at the same time.... having 2 slots plus a possible third is just going to make the RB pool that much more sought after. As it is now if you select a Running back and then come around to your pick again, you can get A. A decent running back that has been left over, or B. A good reciever.
I am new to this so please bare with me if I sound ignorant.

Yahoo and espn standard league is 2 rb's and 3 wr's, so if you adfd another running back, the flew can be used for a wr, and be balanced.......
Is that good enough? If you don't its ok, but I think we're gonna be getting scores of like 100 points to 125, while if you added another RB, it would get more interesting, and give more point potential.
As it is, thereas no reason to have more than 3 RB's, 2 to start, and 1 for the bye week, however, the majority of players are RB's, meaning the majority of the drafting pool will be uuseless except for MAYBE 1 bye week.

DRAFT ORDER (as of 7-24-2007):
Division 1:

9) NAES72
it was fixed i tell you
Having looked at the Top 500 on several sites last night, and even a 'pro-draft', I'm still not sure I see a reason to expand the rosters to add another RB.
As it is, most teams run with one main running back and two or more wide-outs all season. Some teams do a RB-by-committee, typically at the expense of their receiving corps.
The way we've currently got it set up, you're forced to make the same call each week: Do you add a second running back if your primary back isn't that strong, or do you go for a pass-based offense with a strong QB and several good WRs?
it was fixed i tell you
If it makes you feel better, after going through my potential picks last night, you've got a stronger spot at picks #9 and #12 than I do at #3 and #18.

I've never played in a league that required 3 WR. I've had 2 RB, 2 WR and a flex but never 3 WR required. I'm fine with with either 1 or 2 RB since we have a flex.

I spoke with a co-worker today who was in an offline draft last year and he said it took them two months to get it done...not even starting until Week 3.
As I mentioned before, we should get this going as soon as we can, now that everyone is signed up, the draft order is set, and we know the positions/scoring now. You will soon find out that everyone will have their own schedules when it comes to this kind of draft, due to work, family, or other things. I know in the basketball league, 6 of us got on an Instant Messenger to try and get through a few more picks more quickly, but one of the two guys that wasn't there had the next pick and he never showed up that night, so we all just waited and waited for no reason. I imagine with 10 teams and 14 rounds, this will happen often and will take some time. If not, it's better to be done sooner than sometime after the season starts.
Not trying to be a pain in the butt here, but just relaying how these things go down from my personal experience and from what my co-worker experienced as well.
As for the roster settings, I'm cool with whatever. I kinda like 'em like they are now, but if everyone else wants them changed, I'm cool with that too.:)

I haven't had any interest expressed here or via PM beyond what's already posted. Larry Johnson could be a #2 choice is some leagues, but his contract dispute and the return of Priest Holmes, who appears to be in top playing form according to the Chiefs and his doctors, could cut into L.J.'s yardage and TDs this season, and there are at least two other RBs who look to be major fantasy backs this year ...

bench does NOT count for totals. Its only for when a starter has a bye week, or doesn't start, or is injured. And you can have nay position on your bench, but just a heads up. Defense is a bad idea to have extras of. Its worth little to no points

He wouldn't count toward your totals if he was on your bench, but he might earn you a "D'oh!" trophy. :)
It's a good idea to stock your bench with good players because, depending on the match-ups each week, you may want to switch out players with the guys who were on your bench the week before.
For example, if you've got an RB in your flex-spot that's facing one of the leagues best run defenses, it might be a good idea to switch him out for an RB with a bit of a softer defense that week or a WR with a good similarly good match-up.
And, I generally pick-up two defenses and play whichever one is going to be facing the worst opponent that particular week. (Also, when fielding defenses, keep in mind things like home-field advantage and weather.)
Don't overlook your Defense / Special Teams or make them an afterthought to the rest of your draft picks ... we had several Defenses last season that picked up 20+ points on their own in big weeks (the Bears did it a lot last season).

I know.
He played just fine in the late season / post-season last year, his offensive line finally came together, and Matt Hasselbeck is recovered from his non-throwing arm shoulder surgery which should help the Seahawk passing game.
Shaun's going to be back in his record-setting 2005 form this season.
Latest NFL Rumors can be found HERE (http://msn.foxsports.com/rumors/nfl#1).
Among them:
1) L.J.'s agent says Chiefs haven't offered a new deal since June 1. That's not good news, since I'm a Chiefs fan.
2) The Bucs might still go after Daunte Culpepper. Jake Plummer is holding out.
3) Michael Strahan is going to be in Giants training camp today, but may hold out for a new contract.
4) Asante Samuel may miss the start of Pats training camp.
5) Top pick JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders can't come to terms on a contract, and he may hold out.
6) Cowboys are claiming to have the best defense in the NFL.
7) Lions' top pick Calvin Johnson still hasn't signed a contract, which means he can't practice with the team or attend team meetings.
8) The Jets' backfield got even thinner after Curtis Martin's retirement, as backup RB Cedric Houston quit the team.
9) Steelers' WR Santonio Holmes due to recovering from a non-football related medical procedure. He has no idea when he'll be allowed to return to practice.
10) Giants are claiming Eli Manning is ready to have a big year.
11) Browns are going to determine their starting QB in camp. Their 'veterans' (Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson) have a combined 6-15 record.
12) Vikes still haven't signed Adrian Peterson, but expect to soon.

I went ahead and PMed DarkFlash just in case no one else had. I know some people may not have expected us to start drafting until this weekend, so they may be unaware. If these lulls in the draft continue on after this weekend, I would suggest that starting on Monday, if someone doesn't make a pick within 12 hours, Jacin just picks the next best available for them. If we were to go entire days waiting on a person to pick, we'll still be doing this when the season starts. 140 picks to be made and we've made four in a day and a half so far.:)
I would also suggest that after each person makes their selection that they go ahead and PM the next person to pick, so that they know it is their turn. Jacin is going to have a lot on his hands with this, so we shouldn't expect him to do everything for us.

Rather than hold up the whole process, I would suggest just sending Jacin the next 10 players you want (that realistically would be available by your next pick) or just tell him to make the next pick for you. There's no reason to hold up 9 other people because you may not be available.:)

You guys have some extremely high expectations if you think this kind of draft will be done in a short time. I can honestly see this taking all the way up to the start of the season and I was aware of that going in. If everyone PMs the next person after they have sent in their pick, then we won't have to sit around constantly checking to see who's pick it is. When you get the PM, you know it's your turn.
Also, I would advise people when it's their pick *cough*DarkFlash*cough* to post who they picked, so the next person could post their pick. By PMing it directly to Jacin and not posting the pick, then we all have to wait on him to get online, get the PM, then post it. And if the next couple of people to draft are online at that time, that could be two or three more picks done right there. By not posting the pick, then those people may not be online when Jacin posts the picks and I think you see where I'm going here. Everyone's schedules are different, so posting your pick when it's your turn to draft, along with PMing it in to Jacin would help a lot in expediting this.:)

Yeah I'm not quite understanding why we need to pick here as opposed to doing a live draft through Fox... I mean we basically have 2 leagues. I've been checking in a couple times a day to see if my pick is up yet but we're still on #4 I think. I'm #7 so I'd at least like to see who was taken 4th and 5th before I decide who I want.
Gacy's Clown

That's where everyone has to realize that they NEED to post who they picked here, along with PMing it in to Jacin. Just posting here that you made some picks doesn't tell anybody anything. If Jacin is away, which I think he usually is on the weekends, then that gives us the ability to continue on without him having the list updated.
Perhaps he could PM everyone and remind them that when it is their turn to pick, to post the pick here (not that you made a pick...but your actual pick) and to PM the next person in the drafting order.
I really feel once everyone is on the same page that after the first round, it could go a lot smoother.
And if everyone wants to go the Live route, that's cool too. He's already got the draft order determined and can go in and input that himself for the draft.:)

KitsuShel
07/30/2007, 09:50
Some of the problems with that are:
#1 We don't know who has sent their picks to Jacin already. He said to PM him with your top 3 picks, which a lot of us did and just need to be updated.
#2 If we're doing the draft this way, then everyone needs some patience. Not everyone can be online all of the time. For example, Jacin isn't usually on on the weekends, iirc.
I'm not saying its perfect, its just that we can't fault people for not posting their picks here, if they already did what Jacin said and PM'd them to him. If they're just ignoring the game/thread altogether, thats a completely different story.
DeltaPi1049

I would say if there is a time limit and you miss it, you get an auto draft pick. That way you dont end up with a team of 5 guys if you miss a few picks.
Picks are in an updated. Currently waiting on armac and biz567.
And, all of the players who had yet to send in picks for the first round were sent a reminder late last week to get their picks in.
As Gacy had pointed out, this draft could last right up until opening weekend. I hope it doesn't, but not everyone can be on all the time ...
Realistically, if we're going to get done in time, rounds need to last 3 days at most.
So, everyone, please have your picks ready so that we're not held up. If you know that you're going to be gone for an extended period, send me a list -- a realistic list -- and I'll take the first available based upon your list.

While I'm getting more and more open to that idea, I'd rather not do it that way.
The point of this league was that people don't get screwed because they got a pick from a list that they didn't want simply because they couldn't be there to make the pick themselves.
That said, I've sent another reminder to the 5 people I still need picks from for the first round.
I can see who has been online on the Realms when. I know who's been here and just hasn't bothered to send in their picks, despite the reminders. I'm willing to consider dropping those folks and, if possible, replacing them with people who have PM'd me to express interest (CapAmerica24, for example).

Actually despite the fact that yahoo's and ESPN's rankings are skewed, they are not skewed THAT much. I have had really good results with the auto draft.
However, I pre-rank players anyways, so that it doesnt pick me players who I dont want. That is what people should do.
Now, what I would do, is set up a time where people can get on HCR and just get this all done. Coordinate schedules, do it all that night, so that there wont be a weeks worth of waiting between rounds. Right now its been a week, and nothing against you Jacin, but this is at a snails pace. At this rate, we wont get it done before the year starts. So, I would send out an APB and just start busting skulls.
But of course - you are the commish, so its up to you.

My primary running backs drafted by the auto drafter last year? Priest Holmes (KC - PUP all year), and Ryan Moats (Phi - the back-up to the back-up to Brian Westbrook). I'll never put someone else through that misery.

Seriously, though. The league wasn't originally even supposed to close for new players until tomorrow, which means that we wouldn't have even begun the first round of drafting until Wednesday.

The guys who are still M.I.A. have all been PM'd twice (last week, and again yesterday) to remind them to get their picks in.
armac hasn't been logged onto HCRealms since 7/23/2007.
Iceman425 was on this weekend, and sent me a PM then that he'd review the lists of who'd been taken and get me his picks.

armac has checked in. He's been away at SDCC without internet access, was swamped with work when he got back, thought we weren't even starting the draft until this week, and ... well, long story short, he'll get his picks in ASAP.

quick question: so does the 2nd round start from the bottom up ? Notice the top picks people haven't drafted yet.
Gacy's Clown
08/01/2007, 20:22
Yeah. It's a snakedraft, meaning it goes from 1-10 the first round, then 10-1 in the next round and alternates back and forth all throughout the draft.
The NEW Auto-Drafting Rules.
In just over an hour, the deadline will have passed and Iceman425 and Antipathy will have their picks auto-drafted for them and Division I will move on to Round 2 of their draft..
So, with that in mind, let me take a moment to explain how I will auto-draft and when the auto-draft rule will be applied.
First, the 'how' ...
I've got two lists of players, ranked as the Top 500 best players available this season (without regard to injury). If I have to auto-draft for you, I will chose the next highest ranked available pick from that list.
For example, the player ranked 6th on both lists is Brian Westbrook (RB - Phi). Unless I get a different pick from him in the next hour, that's who Iceman425 will get picked for him in the first round. We will then do the other picks that I do have (which, thankfully, don't include Brian Westbrook). Antipathy, then, will get then next best available player.
If there's a conflict in the lists, I'll average the two rankings and whichever player's average ranking is higher is who will be auto-drafted.
And, here's the 'when' ...
In order to get the draft done by the start of the season, I'm going to limit rounds to 48 hours (not including weekends). If you haven't gotten your pick to me during the 48 hours of that round, and the time expires, I will auto-draft for you.
Round 2 officially starts at 12:00pm CDT today. That means that Round 2 ends on Monday at 12:00pm CDT. Then, we'll begin Round 3.
As I have done previously, if you don't have your pick in, I'll try to send you a reminder via PM or e-mail. If I still don't get your pick, I'll have to draft for you just to keep things going.
What to do if you don't like your Auto-Drafted pick.
If you had a player auto-drafted for you and you don't want them, for whatever reason (I hate the team they play for, I don't think they'll perform well this year, whatever ...), you can exchange them at any time before the end of the next round for any other player that is still on the board.
You cannot take someone who has already been picked up by someone else after your auto-drafted selection.
So, if Iceman425 decides that he wanted Frank Gore instead of Brian Westbrook, he could take him so long as Frank Gore was still undrafted. But, if absolutvt69 picked up Frank, Iceman425 would have to look for someone else ... like, say, Tom Brady (if he were still available).
Got it?
Any questions can be posted here or PM'd to me.
I'll actually be at a Doctor's appointment at 12:00pm today. So, I'll post the updates to the picks as soon as I return from that (approx. 1:30pm CDT, hopefully).

I guess I have questions relating to this...
Let's say you autodrafted for me, and I got (using your example) Brian Westbrook.
I log on and six picks have passed, and I let you know that I wanted Jamal Lewis instead, and since he wasn't drafted, you make the change.
What if one of the six picks that had passed since then had wanted Brian Westbrook, but couldn't take him because I autodrafted him? Do they have any option of claiming him and releasing their pick which could cause that to happen again?
If they don't have the option of trying to claim the unwanted and discarded autodraft pick does that give the player seven picks later a benefit since they have the chance to pick up someone that wouldn't have been there normally?
I'm not trying to be contrary, but I am trying to point out possible flaws in pushing the draft so quickly before the first exhibition game has been played.

Good questions.
I'll do some factoring in of who has been 'requested' by a subsequent drafter as well. In this instance, we don't have any conflicts. But, if the next best available player was the same as the guy that someone who had sent in their draft pick wanted later in that same round, I would consider dropping to the next best guy.
That's why it benefits you to get your picks in.
If an auto-draft pick gets dropped, they'll go back into the draft pool at the end of that particular round. So, then, they'd have the opportunity to get picked up or passed on normally. As there is the 'by the end of the next round' limit to dropping, I think this should minimize how many times this situation has to be dealt with.
And, frankly, I'm hoping it's not something that I have to do very many times for very many people anyway.

Good grief... there's no way Shaun Alexander should fall to the second round... much less LATE second round.

I know. He's been a top five pick in every draft guide, and 'draft average' list I've seen. He's typically going somewhere around the #4 slot after L.T., L.J., and Steven Jackson.

I was going to pick him above Gore, but I think Gore is going to have a better year this year than last! Holy ####!
so i got my pick in but i will have to go tell monday before i see if i get him
Unless Antipathy gets on and picks this weekend, yes.
I may regret not taking Alexander, but I knew I was passing him up to get the two RBs that I took.

Gacy's Clown

I don't think there is a league link actually set up yet, as all of the drafting is taking place here first. I'm sure we'll have a link up sometime soon.
Where is the link for this league?
You guys will be sent an e-mail, depending on which League you're in, prior to the start of the season that will give you the sign-up information (League ID and password) for your particular division.

and why did TAD take 2 quarterbacks? is this a common strategy in other leagues? I cant seem to see a reason for 2 quarterbacks this early

Best guess? So he can trade one later. I don't see any other reason to take 2 good QBs so early other than trade bait.

I don't know either. I just assume they have a plan or just like those players.
I PMed in my next set of picks, but since I'm here, mike's here, and Stepper sent in a big list, I may wait and see what transpires and make my pick on my own....and, no, there won't be a wait since I'll be here awhile.:)

Stepper is in the hospital, but said he sent Jacin a big list and since he hasn't even updated my pick on the list, he probably hasn't gotten around to checking Stepper's picks either. So, when he gets the list updated, it should include Step's and then you can get yours in. It's hard to believe that Jacin may actually be working right now...:cheeky:
