The "Thing from Another World" game

This game premise is stolen directly from the short story "Who Goes There" and the 1981 movie adaptation of that story--"The Thing."

We need twelve volunteers to play. All players will be stationed at a remote Artic research station, cut off from the rest of the world.

One of you (randomly chosen) will have been "absorbed" by a shape-changing alien. The object is for the human players to find and eliminate all aliens before all the humans are absorbed.

Note: Not even the aliens will know if they are aliens.

Each round, one player will be allowed to "perform a blood test" on another player of his choice to determine if he's alien or human. If his test subject is an alien, he is killed.

After the blood test, there is a 40% chance of another randomly chosen player being "absorbed." So you'll never know for sure (unless you kill them all) how many aliens there are after the first round.

So, if at least 12 of you sign up to give this a try, the game is good to go.

Brimely was the mad doc who they tossed out in a shack where the creature got him...so he went underground, built a space ship and started picking people off. Hmm...on second thought... :laugh:

I'm adding two new slants to the game:

If there is every a "only one human is left" situation, then the odds of him/her being absorbed will be reduced to 20%.

At any point, if at least four of you mutually agree, you can kill off a player on the suspicion that he/she is an alien. Those ID'd as aliens via the blood test are still automatically killed.

In the story ( I don't remember all of the movie) couldn't the dogs tell who was an alien which was why they were killed off fairly early?

Well, in the movie everyone is around each other when their blood is subjected to the hot-wire test (this was also in the original story "Who Goes There?" by Campbell, though it wasn't in the first movie, "The Thing from Outer Space"). So, I'm assuming we're all standing around testing each other's blood with flamethrowers and explosives aimed at one another here.

The dogs got killed because the Thing was "imprisoned" (placed in a pen) with them (it had first reached the base in the form of a dog that the surviving Norweigans were chasing). They didn't react to it at first but as it started to change to devour, adapt and "replace" them, the dogs went nuts.

By this point, it is mathematically likely (though not certain) that there are more aliens than humans.

it's been a long time since i watched the movie...but did the aliens know who the others were? cuz if so, you could allow the aliens to know who the others are, and to try and focus votes that way, but that might be too powerful an ability to have for them

Well, the aliens were all essentially the same being infecting and transforming others so, yeah, it knew who the others were but they were also willing to sacrifice one another.

I think letting the aliens communicate their "alien-hood" to one another would be too powerful in this game. It lets them start lynch mobbing the remaining humans as well as testing humans so their own numbers don't dwindle. The whole game is based around random guesses and that tips it heavily in favour of one side once you remove their random knowledge.

I've kept it "The Thing" rather than "Body Snatchers" because that seems to work a little better thematically. Sorry, Rokk. But anyone who thinks Audrey Heburn is better looking than Ingrid Bergman has to take what he can get.
