Okay, I'll give you some general plot points & clues, you tell me the movie.

The winner gets to describe another movie of their choice, and so on.

Here goes:

The story begins with a somewhat cocky teen aged boy (16, 17?) who lives on a remote farm with his Uncle. We don't know what happened to the boy's parents but they are presumed dead.

It is a time of strife - the "realm" is under the leadership of an evil dictator (we'll call him the dark lord) who has a champion that practices dark sorcery and can kill his enemies remotely with the wave of a hand. To get the point across of his level of power the champion often kills his servants when they fail to complete a task.

Meanwhile there's a Princess who has recovered/stolen some goods from the evil ruler and attempts to return it to the freedom fighters. Her plan goes awry and after a valiant fight she is captured - but not before removing the sought after item from the playing field by placing it out of reach of the enemy...where it winds up in the path of the boy-hero.

The boy hero discovers a wily, gray haired old man that lives the life of a pauper on the edge of town. Like a Transformer there appears to be more to the man than meets the eye. He befriends the boy and becomes a sort of mentor to him.

We learn that the mentor possesses a glowing sword and once belonged to an ancient order of protectors of the "realm" that often used magic in addition to swordplay, to help police the realm and keep the peace and harmony that lasted thousands of years. A little more backstory is revealed and we find out that the current evil leader had all but wiped out this order of "knights" in a climactic battle years ago with the help of his right hand man.

They return to the boy's home and find the farm in ruins, the Uncle dead - it appears as though the dark lord's troops have found out that the boy has the "item" they desire. The mentor decides the safest course of action is to take the stolen "item" to the Freedom Fighters.

Along the way, the mentor trains the boy in both swordplay and "magic." At some point the boy receives a vision that the Princess has been captured and is being held in the dark lord's fortress. Against impossible odds the boy and old man rescue the princess with the help of an Anti-hero who possesses dubious motives. Sadly, the Mentor is struck down and killed by the dark lord's "sorcerer" as the group escapes.

On the run from evil minions the boy flees to the freedom fighters with the Anti-hero and princess in tow. Little do they know that they were tracked back to the Freedom Fighters headquarters and now the dark lord plans on attacking their base and finishing them off once and for all. The freedom fighters mount a counter assault with the help of the "item" that was retrieved from the dark lord's lair, and the boy saves the day by revealing his impressive "air cavalry" flying skills.

Tell me:

the name of the Boy
the name of the Mentor
the name of the Princess
the name of the Anti-hero

In a seafaring state where traveling pilgrims are the lifeblood of the kingdom, a maiden is torn apart by a sea monster. The Knight Protector investigates the crime and reports to the king, but the king (who is fearful of losing the pilgrim's patronage at the eve of a major feast) ignores his warnings. A serf is next devoured, and this time it is obvious that a mythical beast stalks the kingdom.

After further depradations the Knight Protector finally gets permission from the King to go on a quest to rid the world of the monster. He travels with two boon companions: a ruffled ruffian with a haggard countenance and a scholar with copiuous knowledge of beasts moste monstrous. Together they set out to rid the kingdom of the monster.

Upon first seeing the beast, the Knight Protector frets about the relative girth of their vessel, but the ruffian (whos ship it is) presses on. Three times they lodge the beast with enchanted kegs and three times it submerges, During a pleasant interlude the three companions compare wounds gained in battle and sing songs best heard in ale houses and learn a horrid truth about the ruffian -- he was on board a ship bearing Greek Fire that capsized in the midst of a hoard of the horrors they now face.

The scholar uses the wit of the ancients to fashion a protective barrier with which he can destroy the monster, but it proves the stronger and seems to devour the scholar. The Knight Protector and the ruffian battle the beast as best they can, but it tears into their vessel, finally devouring the ruffian. Finally the Knight Protector manages to ignite a portion of positive Humors the beast had ingested, causing it to erupt. The scholar emerges from the depths, and together the two make their way to shore.

Tell me:

The name of the Knight Protector?
The name of the ruffian?
The name of the scholar?
The type of monster they hunted?
The name of their vessel?

Whoa, whoa whoa! Hang on a second Jack - Grinner caught what I was going for. I appologize for not getting on here sooner to clairfy, but apparently they wanted me to do some work today. Grinner was technically the winner.

I watched Eragon for the first time last night. I had no exposure to the book, nor knew anything about the story besides what I'd seen in the preview - and honestly, the preview made me think - oh it's "Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings." Not surprising considering the author's background (or lack thereof). I am aware of that Star Wars pulls from the Hidden Fortress among other things...but some of the totally blatent similarities between Eragon and Star Wars made it a complete bore for me to watch.

You were right on the money.

To Jack's credit, I did draw as many similarities between the two, but you were able to see through that and examine the minutia of the plot points - specifically the order in which things happen in Eragon is not the same as SW - the vision about the Princess was the big clue that sets the two apart.

But I can see how anyone could get them confused.

Good work - Rep at ya!

Sorry about the delay - it's payday so I had to go get groceries and the rent (stupid real life :p )

Our movie begins in the past - our two adult leads live a life of adventure, in a world of extraordinary abilities and fantastic gadgets. They marry and settle down, leaving that life behind.

The movie then moves to the present, where our married couple have two children, the oldest a girl and the youngest a boy. The children know nothing of their parents previous life, and the wife doesn't know that the husband isn't as retired as he's supposed to be.

Through a series of events, including the father being captured by the villain, the children find they have to follow in their parents footsteps to save the world from the evil scientific genius. They must fight the villian at his island lair, battling their way through goons and evil robots. Working together, the family saves the day and are closer than before, now all living the adventurous life.

Time to revive and refresh with another movie to guess!

Timeframe - Late 90's

If you're a fan of brooding comic-book antiheroes, got a nihilistic jolt from The Crow (1994), and share [a] highly developed preoccupation for style over substance, you might be tempted to call [this movie] an instant classic of visual imagination. It's one of those films that exists in a world purely of its own making, setting its own rules and playing by them fairly, so that even its derivative elements (and there are quite a few) acquire their own specific uniqueness. Before long, however, the film becomes interesting only as a triumph of production design. And while that's certainly enough to grab your attention (Blade Runner is considered a classic, after all), it's painfully clear that [this movie] has precious little heart and soul.

Synopsis - The story centers on a male lead who wakes up one day feeling like his world is out of sorts. Some thing's not quite right with his surroundings, but he just can't put his finger on it. Scratching the surface he discovers an "underbelly" to the reality he knows, full of "secret police" that walk through the world mostly undetected by the normal populace. The man quickly finds himself on the run from these secret police, befriends a man and woman to join his cause and fantastic cinematic rooftop battles ensue. It is eventually discovered that the "secret police" have kidnapped/entrapped humans and placed them in a "maze" of sorts. Our hero's job is apparent - he must free the enslaved and wake everyone up from this "nightmare" of sorts that the "secret police" have been running. The hero is able (via a plot device) to learn superhuman skills instantaneously with the help of an "injection," and uses his new found powers to save the day, only to realize he's not completely free and clear yet of the "secret police" yet.

Other facts
At the time it was filmed, the underground world depicted in this film required the largest indoor set ever built in Australia.

Quote from the movie: "It's like I've just been dreaming this life, and when I finally wake up, I'll be somebody else. Somebody totally different!"

Canada Maestro is Correct.

Dark City predates the Matrix by 1 year, and shares many reality bending themes.

Also, I just found this out today while researching Dark City - many of the sets from Dark City were later used in... you guessed it - the Matrix!

If the movies weren't filmed so close together I'd have accused the Matrix of blatently ripping off DC, but with the timeframe both were produced it seems unlikely. Any visual similarities are likely due to the sharing of the sets. Any story similarities are just that.

Nope, but a good guess nonetheless.

To keep things moving along since SuperB has one behind mine, I'll reveal it now: the original Gojira.

Clue 1: A proponent of WMD's comes to town and chews everybody out, only leaving due to the beachfront's extreme lack of atmosphere (and oxygen) (this one's pretty clear if you've seen the movie)

Clue 2: Ah, well, now the sun rises on a new day (though it's the same location) (i.e. the location is the land of the rising sun i.e. Japan. A harder clue to ferret out, but gosh darn it it was a bonus.)

Clue 3: Though the flick's in black and white, the leading man's always been a little grey. (Gojira itself is grey in color, not green as it is sometimes depicted in promotional materials.)

Thanks, after we get through some boring cra p that is no where near important to the main story, a secret message is revealed in a more sacred location. Everybody disregards this, with the exception of one. Had she left the situation alone, things could have gone even worse. Afterwards, we find a local child naked, he then gets handcuffed to a street pole, at which point, a neglectful father brings him all of his clothing necessities, except for pants. When they finally go inside to eat, art of the mystery to the revelation is solved by an unlikely companion. Even though they insist on keeping him, to the point where a child feels unwanted. Luckily for him, he found somebody to replace him, one that nobody would expect him to adore. His other child finds success with both cleaning up the lake, and winning the love of a boy with an “Irish Brogue” The father can not help himself from dumping animal droppings into the lake. All for some free donuts. Which reveals both another part of the riddle, and the next president? Who says the famous line, “I was elected to lead, not to read”. Due to his unwillingness to read, the entire town is now surrounded by a bubble like dome, which solves the riddle once and for all. Then after a very close mob scene, the family was barely able to make a dire escape through the sandbox. After a tough sell, the family is on their way to Alaska. He had to win a truck to get their though. They got $1000 just for coming to Alaska. The family is then forced to leave their new home to go and try and save their friends back home. Well, everybody but the father, who stays, has a spiritual epiphany, and needs to go back home, ultimately dooming them. In the end however, him and his son are able to free the town of their dome, and eliminate the one behind their doom.

Name all of the parts to the answer of the riddle
Name the president
In which state does the family normally live in

Then after a very close mob scene, the family was barely able to make a dire escape through the sandbox. After a tough sell, the family is on their way to Alaska. He had to win a truck to get their though. They got $1000 just for coming to Alaska. The family is then forced to leave their new home to go and try and save their friends back home. Well, everybody but the father, who stays, has a spiritual epiphany, and needs to go back home, ultimately dooming them. In the end however, him and his son are able to free the town of their dome, and eliminate the one behind their doom.
