S-C! S-C! S-C! S-C!

And to think, their last season was their rebuilding year! :p I would rather have Sanchez be the QB, but I guess we will have to stick with Booty, you know, as tradition to not switch QBs in their senior season and all.

Oh how I hate USC.So, you're a Bruins fan? ;)

Have to with Konmel. Although I respsct what Pete Carroll has done, I hate USC. Not as much as Notre Dame or Ohio State, but close.

Before this degenerates into a hate fest, I can't wait for the season to start.Instead of focusing on what teams I don't like, I will talk about the one I do. Meechigan.I bleed Maize and Blue. But, I am not overboard about it. I rooted for OSU to carry the conference flag against the Gators. So who else is up for next Thursday?

Actually, Cal, my alma mater. I know, I should "hate" Stanford, and things would be different if I still lived up in the Bay Area. But when you live in SoCal and are surrounded by obnoxious SC fans --- argh! Not all the fans are bad, but there certainly are a great number of them that are. I too respect Carroll and all he's done. Well, here's hoping someone can put a thorn in USC's side, like Cal did a few years ago. ;)

Yep. That did hurt :) .

It's cool. We all have our favorites. I grew up in SoCal, but that never really made me like them. I never went to a game, but the first time I saw their marching band, their style and uniforms, that's when I started to like them. Plus, being from my home state helped a lot in that transition.

There's not really a school that I can say I hate. I can't really hate UCLA or ND because the games are always great to watch. And the sport is too big to keep track of everything that is going on.

I'm a UGA fan. But I did see GA Tech against Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl one year (the year they were co-champions).

In my defense, I was 8 years old . But I do remember the rose parade quite vividly . And sleeping on New Years Eve in a lawn chair on the sidewalk.

I never did that. I hear it's quite the party (at least back when my brother spent the night on the sidewalk). The time I saw the Rose Parade, we actually bought tickets for the stands since we had out-of-town guests.

USC plays at the Coliseum, which is not the nicest place. I've been to one game there, which was enough to convince me never to go back.

The Rose Bowl, on the otherhand, is a nice stadium. I've seen a couple of games there, including two Rose Bowls. Once, USC beat Michigan (which is nothing new -- sorry theanalogkid). The other time was a classic game -- Ohio State vs. Arizona State. There was so much scoring the last few minutes of the game. Ohio State scored with a few seconds left to win it, IIRC. (Again, sorry theanalogkid).

BOO!!! Texas is ranked ahead of the University of Oklahoma!

Well, from what I read, Texas is overrated. Regardless, Oct. 6 should be exciting.

theanalogkid
08/25/2007, 09:31
Thats okay. You can call me TAK if you want, I will be here a lot. I am envious of anyone who has saw the Rose Parade or seen a Rose Bowl. I have a strict 24 hour drive rule on which bowl games I can see which Michigan is in (along with money). I have seen them play in 2 Citrus bowls, beating 'Bama and Auburn.

Coming back from the second one, We kept honking at GT fans as they had beaten ND in a bowl:laugh: . Go Yellowjackets!

I was at Virginia Tech's home opener yesterday. It was the first time I'd been on campus since April 16th (I graduated in 2003). It was kind of weird... everything seemed subdued. The tailgates, the crowd, even the team seemed a little off. I don't know if it was just all the attention and emotion the game got but we didn't play well at all. We won and that's the main goal but if we play like we did Saturday against LSU next weekend we'll lose by 40. I'm not too worried about our defense. I think we intentionally played things safe on defense as not to show LSU too much. We just used mostly base packages and defenses with the occasional blitz. Offensively though we've got work to do. I knew our offensive line would be a work in progress but they were close to terrible. We couldn't get any push in the running game and while we did better pass blocking there were a couple times where our QB got his head taken off or came close to it. When the QB takes his drop and there's a defender there before he even has a chance to set his feet or look downfield, you know someone's not doing their job blocking.

The bad thing is LSU has a great defensive line so if our O-line doesn't get things squared away it could be a loooong night. I think our defense will give LSU problems (I wasn't all that impressed by their offense Thursday against Miss. State) but I think the same can be said about their defense and our offense. That means it comes down to big plays and turnovers and given that the game is at LSU I have to give them the edge. I definitely think we CAN win and I have a feeling we'll play much better than we did yesterday but it's hard to win on the road especially against a top 5 team.

I'm sure you have heard this, but Appalachian State has won the last two Division I-AA Championships and their victory over Michigan was the first time a I-AA team beat a ranked team.

Does anyone know if the College Monday Night Football is a regular thing this year? Usually the polls come out on Sunday but if there is always a game on Monday, it might not come out until Tuesday now.

I was curious to see how far Michigan dropped.

The Cal vs. Tennessee game was great. I don't think the Vols will drop too far. They were in it almost the entire game, unlike Cal last year. But I was a little worried. Cal usually plays great in the first half and then let their opponent back into the game during the second half. It's very nerve-wracking.

“Season after season, year after year, you try to justify your absurdly high preseason ranking” (sing along: clutching at straaaaaaws)

“Inevitably, you’ll bring up the past, boast of National Championships won 40 years before you were even born” (those were the daaaaaays!)

“You will point out that you have more wins than any other program….as though that is relevant to the current season” (sing along: you’ve been playing football since the 1870- eeeeeees)

“Go on, ignore that loss to Ohio State in the regular season finale and continue to believe that you’ll defeat any bowl opponent with striking ease” (sing along: we’ll win by thirteeeeeey!)

“So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, oh Emperor of Excuses, and take comfort knowing that when you finish ranked number twenty-five, you’ll be back to number five when the preseason polls come out next year (sing along: Oh Mr. Delusional Michigan Faaaaaan!)

I wouldn't be surprised if LSU eventually does leap-frog USC in the standings even if they both win out. LSU is playing in the toughest conference. The Pac 10 has improved from a few years ago, when USC's one loss to Cal cost them a chance at the BCS Championship because of the strength of schedule factor.

Anyone else have this small part of them wishing the Fighting Irish go winless all season, just to see if Notre Dame would eat that contract they gave Charlie and go hire another coach?

Hell, if my son gets into Notre Dame, I think they'd still be paying Charlie then.

It may just be me, but I don't think rice will do well in the NFL. Half the stuff he pulls of for a huuge game changing play, would never fly in the NFL. He just doesn't have the ability to use the talent he has to its full potential, IMO.

USC takes back a few #1 votes from LSU. Florida plays leap frog and jumps over Oklahoma (in the AP), a few SEC teams enter after impressive wins: Kentucky and Alabama. A big 10 log jam in the top 10 -- Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Well, it's 3 weeks late, but I found this thread. I guess that's good for me (my UT Vols are terrible so far). I'm sure I would have to have eaten alot of crow had I jumped in here early. Actually after the Cal loss, I'm wasn't expecting much. As Konmel said, Cal usually opens the door to defeat in the second half, and they actually let TN in the door, but they were to weak(tn) to even step through it. And then there was the massacre at FLA. I knew it was coming, but I didn't expect that kind of thrashing.

The season overall so far, Michigan is a huge surprise to me. Not a disappointment, just a surprise. LSU is a big surprise to me as well. I knew they'd be tough, but not this strong. I do believe they are the no.1 team in the nation. LSU vs FLA will be the big game. Anyone know if they are scheduled to play this year in the regular season, or will we have to wait for the SEC championship? IIRC, they are in diffferent divisions of the SEC and only face each other in an every-other-year-type deal. KY is also a surprise. I know I'm talking mainly SEC, but it's what I know. UT Knoxville being my alma mater and all.

Besides Michigan, outside the SEC another big time surprise has to be Penn St. I know Kirk Herbstreet was big on them pre-season, but they've had some weak years as of late, and I myself was wondering about Joe Pa's capability at this point. I'm not wondering right now(nor have I ever had to when they owned TN in any post-season bowl game when they faced each other).

The next team I see falling out of the top 25? Louisville. I couldn't believe MTSU scored so much against them in the first game. I love me some MTSU, but dang! I think coupled with the KY loss, they should already be out of the top 25. I don't know their schedule, but anybody good will beat them.

The strongest teams I've seen are LSU, FLA, WV, and Penn St. I haven't seen USC, but haven't heard anything great. Most of the other top25 teams, I haven't seen either, so I don't mean to slight anyone. But those four up there are my top 4 picks of the season so far.

Good call on Louisville. Losing to Syracuse??? They are still rebuilding.

And the Michigan fans rejoiced.

And the Notre Dame fans are looking ahead for the two games against Duke and Stanford (so ND won't go winless afterall). And I am by no means a Notre Dame fan.

The top 10 in both polls are identical, but both Oklahoma and Florida have stolen some first place votes in the Coach's poll. When's the Rutgers-Boston College showdown? The Cincinnati Bearcats in the top 25 football poll? Take a picture -- I'm sure their coach will be moving on to bigger and better programs after this year. The SEC still has the most in the polls. And Michigan is getting some votes again.

Edit: I forgot that Boston College is no longer in the Big East. Speaking of the Big East -- they currently have 4 teams in the Top 25 With West Virginia, Rutgers, South Florida and Cincinnati.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. If we can beat Ohio State and win our bowl game, it can still be a somewhat positive year for us Wolverine fans.

Konmel
09/23/2007, 16:19
Isn't it funny when you rate a season based on how you did against your arch-rival?

Ohio State had many great seasons under Cooper, but never could beat Michigan and so weren't successful in their eyes.

A team can have an off year and lose most of their games, but as long as they beat their rival, they were happy. I remember one year Cal had a great team but somehow lost to Stanford, who was like 3-7 or something. Needless to say, it ruined a great season for Cal and made Stanford's season that year. Cal went on to beat Clemson in the Citrus Bowl, but that Stanford lost still was painful. Heck, I don't even know Cal's record back in '82 but the fact that "The Play" happened and they beat Stanford (who was good back then and had a quarterback by the name of John Elway), more than made the season.

Whew!!! What a hit to make the ball come out and cause a touchback. The Bears almost fell as did several other ranked teams -- Oklahoma gets upset by Colorado, Texas getting crushed by Kansas State, Rutgers about to fall to Maryland, GA Tech losing to Clemson and Penn State losing to Illinois. And Wisconsin had a scare just like Cal. A big shake-up in the polls today.

Of course, my LSU Tigers didn't get beat though. I must admit we had a little scare though. ;)

Texas, getting beat like that was certainly unexpected. As was Oklahoma.

Notre Dame looked better today, even though they couldn't get a win.

And I have a feeling, either Florida or USC will fall tonight.

To be honest, I have been rooting for both USC and LSU to win constantly so that they could meet up in the National Championship.

I want us to beat USC in the National Championship so that USC can shut up with their claims to the National Championship 4 years ago. I even have an LSU shirt that is directed towards USC that says "Got Trophy?"

I just wanted us to destroy USC in the National Championship.

As for LSU? I think our defense really didn't show up and we just made careless mistakes (*ahem* 3 yard pass from Tebow, long strike from Tebow to Cornelius).

But our offense showed up. Especially Jacob Hester. That guy just doesn't give up no matter how short or long the yards are.

Ohio State tops the polls, but it is not unaminous. South Florida #2 and BC #3 - who'd have thunk it? LSU still gets a #1 vote dispite losing. Cal cannot take advantage of LSU's lost and loses to a team they shouldn't have lost to (it happens every year). Cal is ahead of USC in the AP but tied in the Coach's Poll. Arizona State gets a #1 vote? Michigan makes it back into the top 25 in the AP (and is 26th in the Coach's). The first BCS poll comes out today or tomorrow.

I fail to see how Oklahoma should be ranked higher than LSU. I just don't think it's even close as to which is the better team.

Ohio State isn't all that great, they just don't play anybody good.

South Florida would get murdered if they played almost any of the top 10 teams.

Boston College is overrated, just like Ohio State.

LSU was dissapointing, but they are still, IMO, the best team in College Football. I don't think that the difference between 6-1 and 7-0 is that different whenever the 6-1 team has beaten FAR better opponents than the 7-0 team.

And USC shouldn't be ranked that low at all, IMHO. I would say they should be ranked 8 at the lowest.

And I still don't think Michigan is good.

Go Virginia Tech...after the LSU beat down hoping for better. Tough game this week against BC.

Ah. Yet another game, yet another reason I hate the BCS (you can remove the C and get what I think of it) system.

Go to a freakin' playoff system already. This "The Hopes of Playing for the National Title Dashed..." any time a team (that matters, another sign of elitism) loses is annoying as all hell.

theanalogkid

I totally disagree. A playoff just makes college football another sport. A will give you the elitism( it would be cool to see Hawaii play on New Years) but I like the current system. I know I am in the minority.

Then how about a combo system. You break the divisions (Big 10, PAC 10, whatever) and assign them a Bowl Game. Then, based on the overall record of that particular division at the "end" of the season will determine which of those bowl games would be the for the National title. That way, you don't get this silly notion that Michigan, in losing week 1, can't even consider a run for the Title.

Also would mean division games would have far more lasting effect.

That would be fine. I have no problem with division games meaning more, I wish the Big Ten would drop a crappy OOC game to play another conference game.
And as a Michigan fan, had we gone 11-1, we still would have no business sniffing around the NC game this year.

Because of the one loss, or the fact that other teams were undefeated?

all that matters is that dennis dixon the oregon ducks qb was in the top 3 running for the heisman, not to menyion the ducks were ranked #2 as of thursday. but dennis dixon injured his leg, as well as their star hb johnathan stewart was injured as well in a #### game against arizona

Both. Maybe after all the shakedown, but I still am accustumed to playing for the Rose Bowl first. A NC is an afterthought.

No, I think it proves that USC will always have an unfair advantage over any visiting team when it comes to the Rose Bowl. They play regular season games there, for cryin' out loud.

But yeah, Ron Zook has done an incredible job turning that program around; its just not at that level of BCS ready yet. Michigan would of been a better game, but I still don't think they'd have a shot either.

How's Hawai'i doing? I got to get me a warrior jersey.

USC played at the Colisium, Frontman. The Rose Bowl is UCLA's home ground. Although I heard they may have to share it. I think that USC would have steamrolled Michigan as much as they did Illinois.

But Pasadina is basically in their backyard. It's not a "neutral" site. It's like the White Sox playing in Cleveland or Minnesota or Kansas City. (Or even more appropriate; a Sox game against an opponent at Wrigley Field.)

If you looked at the overhead shot, it was 3/4'ths USC fans, 1/4th Illini Nation.

Hell, some of them could of stayed in their own beds or their own apartments and still made it to the game.

It's like that no matter where the Big Ten goes, except the Motor City. And I don't want to see Michigan there. It just one more thing the conference has to overcome. We travel great, but it is hard to get a half and half mix.

It was basically just the same game, but substitute Georgia for USC and Hawai'i for Illinois. Complete defensive domination by both winning teams.

LOL! Well, I just dig Brady and his story. 6th round pick, gets the start because Drew "I look like the actor who got Patrick Swayze killed in Ghost" Bledsoe gets hurt, Brady becomes the starter.

All that talent, dating a Supermodel, looks like a million bucks, and probably is getting more ### than a toliet seat.

And he, along with Randy Moss, gave me my first championship in Fantasy Football.

BOOYAH!!!

I'm pretty sure that if you want your backup quarterback to be a beast, you make Drew Bledsoe the starter for awhile.;)

If you ask me, Georgia dominated Hawaii far more than USC did Illinois. Without that fumble by Mendenhall after the huge screen pass, and without that fumble by the receiver on the 10 yard line, Illinois had a really good shot at that game.

Hawaii never had a shot, even from the first snap.

I was hoping Hawaii was going to have a better game. They just came up against a Georgia buzzsaw. I agree with spidey. The last 2 BCS games will hopefully be more competitive than the first 2.

My Hokies looked horrible yesterday:( It seems they showed up expecting to win. The game never felt as close as the score. Kansas was all over them offense and defense. Good job Jayhawks.

Frustrating game to watch because we could have very easily won it. I thought the defense played well particularly in the second half. I mean if you look at it from a defensive stand point they really only gave up one TD drive. One TD was an int return, they gave up a FG after another int that gave Kansas the ball in our territory and then the other TD was thanks to an interception return that gave them the ball on the 2. If the offense could have gotten out of its own way I think the defense would have had no problems keeping them out of the end zone. What I can't understand is we're having trouble throwing the ball and we're running all over them... so what do we do? Abandon the run and keep throwing. There were several drives in the second half where we got the ball and I really think we should have just pounded Brandon Ore until Kansas showed they could stop him. Instead we kept throwing deep passes that were either incomplete or intercepted. It just didn't make any sense. The blocked FG hurt but I don't have a problem with that. I would have gone for it on 4th and 1 but I understand going for the tie with what should have been an easy kick. It was just an execution problem (one of the linemen apparently didn't know the snap count). All in all a disappointing way to end the season. Give credit to Kansas as they made more plays than we did (that dropped deep pass in the first half was huge). I think the seniors, especially on defense, deserved better. I still think that we are the better team but there's no doubt that Kansas deserved to win this game.

So what happens to USC if Caroll leaves? Is the talent good enough to go 9-2 or 10-1 with anyone wearing the headphones? Or is Petey the reason for the success?
Certainly he would be missed on the recruiting trail.
